When have the M's publicly said recently they didn't have the money to offer a FA player? I don't think the issue is how much money they spend, but who they have chosen to spend the money on. The money seems to be there when they make deals. We can all agree they tend to overpay for nearly everyone.

<blockquote>
I know I am going to get beat up for this…

Bavasi just improved our rotation. Did he pay too much to do so? I don’t care. As long as they put a better product on the field, why should I care what they spend?

Trade for Bedard and all of a sudden we have a very good starting rotation, which is the key to winning.

Let yourselves be happy!
</blockquote>

The Silva signing is money poorly spent. If you are a fan of any team other than the Yankees or Red Sox, the efficiency of how that team spends its money should be of significant concern to you, because payroll limitations WILL be used as a reason that future moves cannot be made to improve the team.

If we get Bedard, I love this deal. Two proven, 28 year old starters added to the rotation? What's not to like?

If we don't add Bedard, this is decent deal, but not nearly enough to make us competitive with LAA.

Also the tigers traded prospects and Andrew Miller for Willis and Cabrera - the extension isn't really the same as a free agent signing.

#77: Frankly there is a difference in the deals bettween the two pitchers.
Silva is new contract and a FA signing while Willis is a extension deal to avoid his going FA so Detriot gets its value out of the trade.

I feel I must add that Willis is unknown quality againist AL hitting on a season long every 5th day start.This is not true of Silva because of his tenure with Minnesota.
With the wear and tear he underwent in Miami with little or no DL time makes me suspect he's an injury waiting to happen.

So, Carlos Silva for 4/44 or Dontrelle Willis for 3/29?

<a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3163167" rel="nofollow">Maybe the Tigers aren't so smart</a>...

This is a way smarter move than I expected Bavasi to make when Kuroda opted for the Dodgers.
I had advocated if the Kuroda deal fell through that the M's should take the offer they had for him and sweeten then in turn offer it to Silva.

It appears much to my surprise Bavasi must have been thinking along the same lines or he's taken to reading blogs and forums.

Now if he can just change gears and forget the Bedard deal.
Instead approach the Rays about one of the young MLB ready surplus arms and save the prospects for the roster.

Another tack he can take is a short term incentive laden contract(1 or 2 yrs only) for one of the following:
Bartolo Colon
Mark Prior
Kris Benson
til either '09 or '10 when the FA/trade pitching market is more flexiable or some of the inhouse starters are ready like Tillman,Morrow,even Augmont.
