Tous les jours à tous points de vue je vais de mieux en mieux.

  2. gwangung on January 16th, 2008 8:15 am

    But I want a pony!

  3. bakomariner on January 16th, 2008 8:33 am

“One day at a time”…you make us sound like addicts…

Speaking of deals, I sent an email to the Ms last week begging them not to trade Jones and the other kids…

I got a form letter response today thanking me and letting me know that they are determined to win a World Championship…

  4. Graham on January 16th, 2008 8:44 am

I gave everyone a pony already.

    So demanding…

  5. The Man on January 16th, 2008 8:46 am

I heard we signed Arthur Rhodes.
    That’s good, right?

  6. msb on January 16th, 2008 8:51 am

it may be time for the pony again.

  7. JI on January 16th, 2008 9:10 am

Just drop the blade already and get this over with.

Is it safe to say the Bedard trade is dead? Or maybe talks are still ongoing without Jones as the center piece?

  10. Wishhiker on January 16th, 2008 9:36 am

    One Day At A Time…Every day without a deal’s a good one.

I’d say that sums up how I’ve been feeling the last couple days at least.

It’s not at all safe to say the trade is dead, is it however promising that it hasn’t happened thus far. At least it gives me hope that the demands of the Orioles will not be met and if it does happen with the M’s the deal might not be as bad as rumored. Still probably bad, just not as much so.

  11. bakomariner on January 16th, 2008 9:36 am

9- haven’t read anything saying they are dead…and we can only hope that Jones is no longer involved if the talks are still on-going…

I, for one, just want it to be announced one way or the other…the suspense is ridiculous…

  12. Carson on January 16th, 2008 9:38 am

The best thing I could ask for my birthday today is no trade. Or, maybe DMZ could make a “Buy Carson a Beer” link.

Chances of no trade are better, so I like that!

Isn’t the signing of Sherrill another good sign?

  13. IHaveALittleProject on January 16th, 2008 9:53 am

Morrow, Clement, Sherrill, Lopez for Bedard and Roberts please.

I’d rather pretend that they can make an intelligent deal instead of hoping for nothing, since I’m confident they will do something.

  14. gwangung on January 16th, 2008 9:56 am

Morrow, Clement, Sherrill, Lopez for Bedard and Roberts please.

    That’s an intelligent deal?

  15. bakomariner on January 16th, 2008 10:00 am

roberts is supposedly going to the cubs…

  16. Carson on January 16th, 2008 10:02 am

14 – I could swallow 13’s proposal a lot easier than the rumored names involved. Too bad Baltimore would laugh at the proposal and hang up. They’re asking the moon for both of them.

  17. bubblegumcrisis on January 16th, 2008 10:29 am

#13, I think we could all live with that one! 🙂

  18. gwangung on January 16th, 2008 10:31 am

Urk. Read the wrong names in that proposed deal.

  19. Jay R. on January 16th, 2008 10:55 am

    3-

I did the same thing and got (probably) the same letter. They are aware that as a passionate fan, I spend a lot of time, energy and money. So I have that going for me.

5 weeks until Pitchers and catchers?

  20. bat guano on January 16th, 2008 10:57 am

Does anyone else think that perhaps a deal was worked out involving Jones but contingent upon Bedard agreeing to a long term contract—and that the deal fell apart when he wouldn’t? My personal opinion all along was that the only way the package being talked about would be acceptable was if the M’s were able to tie up Bedard for beyond two years. That scenario would explain AJ’s weekend work stoppage and then the sudden turn around. If that’s what happened, maybe Bavasi isn’t as dumb as some of us were prepared to believe. And maybe we can get Bedard for two years without including Jones in the package….

  21. dlb on January 16th, 2008 11:05 am

Does anyone think that the Rhodes deal is another sign that Bavasi is gearing up to trade Sherrill thinking Rhodes can be the lefty out of the pen at some point next year? I have that awful thought in my mind and I can’t shake it.

  22. gwangung on January 16th, 2008 11:06 am

    #20

Bavasi is definitely not as dumb as some people make him out to be (that’s not saying he’s smart, but…). That scenario seems plausible. It’s still not one I’d make but it’s not nearly as dumb as trying to trade for Bedard and contract as is with Jones, Clement, et al.

  23. bakomariner on January 16th, 2008 11:13 am

with everything thing that’s happened (minor league signings, winter ball, etc.) i can see a morrow, clement, sherril, tillman deal happening now…and where i don’t want to really see clement go, i’d be okay with a deal like this for bedard now…just NO jones or triunfel…

  24. SpokaneMsFan on January 16th, 2008 11:25 am

3, 19 – Me too, I really like how I mentioned the rumored trade and then they said “Despite the reports you have cited in your previous email let me assure you that we are committed to bringing a World Championship to Seattle” as if I was implying they didn’t WANT to win a championship. I know they WANT to, I just WANT them not to trade Adam Jones, which is all my e-mail really said. Talk about turning words around and replying to something that wasn’t even said.

  25. Evan on January 16th, 2008 11:42 am

I think they’re replying to the now widely held opinion that the team is interested only in being conservatively profitable, not in winning.

  26. Steve Nelson on January 16th, 2008 11:54 am

    Re Rhodes signing.

It’s not just “insurance” in case Sherrill is traded.

The Mariners place significant value on veteran experience. Bavasi has stated on several occasions that he believes the biggest jump between leagues occurs between AAA and MLB. The organization does not have a lot of confidence in translations of MLB stats.

The offshoot of that philosophy is that the Mariners like to fill holes with established vets. While fans at sites such as USSM describe players whom we believe can provide comparable peformance at minimum contracts, the Mariners office clearly does not share that perspective. Late inning relief is also a particular setting in which the Mariners believe that veteran experience makes a huge difference.

Almost every season the Mariners bring in some veterans (usually pitchers) on camp invites to see if they have anything left. Most of the time they can see that the guy doesn’t and they let him go. But if they think the guy still has something, they are strongly inclined to add him to the roster – as they did with Aaron Sele in 2005.

  27. bakomariner on January 16th, 2008 12:03 pm

    26- really…

  28. Jeff Sullivan on January 16th, 2008 12:16 pm
  29. Carson on January 16th, 2008 12:26 pm

26 – Agreed. Also, it’s only a minor league deal, so the risk is minimal (as long as he remains healthy). I personally don’t mind the deal, and have always liked Arthur Lee and his shiny-but-annoying-for-batters earrings. I see where people are going with the insurance thing, but I agree that the Mariners want the veteran grit thing.

On another note, do one word agreements really contribute substantially to the discussion? There’s thirty seconds of coding time you’ll never get back, Derek.

  30. bakomariner on January 16th, 2008 12:29 pm

Does writing four paragraphs about something we already know contribute substantially? Reading that the team wants veterans that will get cut is something we all know and was a waste of time…sorry, this Bedard thing has me in a pissy mood…

  31. lailaihei on January 16th, 2008 12:55 pm

I’m still wondering if there’s any possible explanation that AJ got pulled for 2 days besides that they were on the verge of a deal and it didn’t happen.

Can anyone think of any other possibility?

  32. msb on January 16th, 2008 1:00 pm

yuo know, every time I see this headline, Cristy Lane invades my brain and begins to sing.

  33. bakomariner on January 16th, 2008 1:02 pm

    31- you’re probably right…

  34. Mike Snow on January 16th, 2008 1:02 pm

I’m still wondering if there’s any possible explanation that AJ got pulled for 2 days besides that they were on the verge of a deal and it didn’t happen.

Can anyone think of any other possibility?

Venezuela, and the security issues for baseball players from the U.S. who are down there, means there are other possibilities. An aborted trade seems the most likely, though.

  35. lailaihei on January 16th, 2008 1:15 pm

“I have not heard anything,” Jones said. “I try to keep in contact with our organization, but the last time I talked with our GM (Bavasi), he just said, ‘You’re not going to play for a couple of days as we are in the process of doing all this.’ He said for me to hang tight for a couple of days and they’d get back to me.”

From that report by AJ himself, it doesn’t seem like the issue is non-baseball related.
I’m not throwing out the possibility of it being something other than an aborted trade, but if anyone else can think of a reasonable example, I’d be interested to hear it.

  36. bakomariner on January 16th, 2008 1:25 pm

I doubt Bavasi would say, “We are tying to trade you, so just sit tight and we’ll let you know in a few days if you are staying there or heading to Baltimore for a physical.”

I would assume that most players are in the dark about if they are getting traded, unless they have demanded a trade or the trade needs their approval because of a no-trade clause.

  37. lailaihei on January 16th, 2008 1:27 pm

I know, and I’m assuming that a trade was on the verge of happening and then got called off for whatever reason. And I can’t think of any other explanation for those words by Bavasi. AJ must have known something like that was up.

  38. bakomariner on January 16th, 2008 1:29 pm

I think we just need to be glad that the trade, for now, isn’t happening…whatever the reason…

  39. rea on January 16th, 2008 1:50 pm

Venezuela, and the security issues for baseball players from the U.S. who are down there, means there are other possibilities.

The only ballplayer I ever heard of having trouble down there was Urbina, who of course is a Venezuelan citizen, and who is now doing time in a Venezuelan prison for murder . . .

  40. The Man on January 16th, 2008 1:53 pm

In response to 38 – i dunno about that. The signing of Arthur Rhodes seems to point otherwise.

  41. Wishhiker on January 16th, 2008 2:19 pm

Arthur Rhodes doesn’t really mean anything. At most that could mean that they plan on moving Sherrill this offseason. It doesn’t even prove that.

  42. bakomariner on January 16th, 2008 2:23 pm

Rhodes probably won’t even make the team…

    Re: # 20 “Am I the only one…/i>

Probably not, but you are the only one to put into writing a rational explanation of this week’s musical chairs with Jones, who, according to an Oriole blogger is batting .346 (9 for 26).

  44. Taylor H on January 16th, 2008 6:00 pm

Over at Prospect Insider, they think a deal is getting done for Bedard and he will be introduced on Thursday, but I’m not buying it.

  45. huhwhat on January 16th, 2008 6:28 pm

44 – It’s not “they” at PI, it’s one of the source’s opinion that Jason talked to.

  46. Carson on January 17th, 2008 7:47 am

If nothing else, Rhodes can hang around the bullpen like he did last year to mentor the kids. I’m okay with washed up old guys providing veteran experience as long as it isn’t in a game.

Plus, he loves when I go to the pen during warmups and yell “Arthur LEEEEE!”
