All the media guides are online! Good hunting!

DMZ · March 5, 2008 at 11:08 am · Filed Under Mariners

It’s not just the Mariners: MLB.com has every team’s 2008 media guides available.

Your task: find the most inaccurate player information. Most egregious examples of height and weight fudging win a year’s subscription to USSM. We will also award prizes for unanticipated categories (like the Julio Franco Memorial Age Gap).

Go!

False alarm? Most teams still have their 2007 guides up… all NL teams it appears.

oh, if only Colon was in the Sawks guide.

    His ht/wt ratio is always a knee-slapper.

  3. morisseau on March 5th, 2008 11:46 am

how about the old standby, Jose Mesa’s age when his 1st son was born!

On the surprisingly candid side, Ichiro’s listed at 170 lb. Didn’t they used to claim he weighed 185? His listed height (5-11) is still too high, though.

And C.C. Sabathia’s listed at 290 lb. While probably still low, that’s a big number.

But Matt Stairs is listed at 215 lb. That’s not right. But it is 15 lb. heavier than the listed weight of Manny Ramirez. Manny does not weigh 200. I do not weigh more than Manny Ramirez.

huh. well, it isn’t his weight in kilos.

Yuni and Bloomquist are listed at the same weight… Now I couldn’t be certain about this, but Betancourt appears 20 pounds on Willie.

Felix at 230, Vidro at 200. Both are generous.

What the hell happened there ^?

Sorry mods but I don’t have a clue.

  9. msb on March 5th, 2008 12:41 pm

I think Ichiro!’s listed weight has fluctuated between 170 and 175. Does it really say 5’11”? He used to be 5’9″…

  10. msb on March 5th, 2008 12:42 pm

wonder when the media guides go to print, what with Felix coming in to camp at around 218 …

  11. Evan on March 5th, 2008 12:46 pm

Does it really say 5′11″? He used to be 5′9″…

Remember back in 2002 when Ichiro and Omar Vizquel took the time during an inning to stand back to back at second base to see who was taller?

  12. msb on March 5th, 2008 12:49 pm

someone with a stash of media guides should see if he was 5’9″ in the 2001 guide, or if he grew just after he signed with the M’s

Felix’s weigh-in number when he showed up in Peoria two weeks ago was under 225 pounds.

  14. msb on March 5th, 2008 1:04 pm

how about the old standby, Jose Mesa’s age when his 1st son was born!

well, as it turned out to be his stepson, not such a big deal.

    yup. 218 pounds per Felix.

    Prince Fielder is 5-11, 270?

I believe he was listed at 250 last year but even 270 seems a bit generous.

  17. TheEmrys on March 5th, 2008 1:23 pm

Hmm…. Indians only shows 2007 data.

Just glancing through the Tigers’ media guide and saw Placido Polanco’s photo. Is it just me or does he have the strangest shaped head in MLB? Also I can’t hear his name without thinking of Enrico Palazzo of The Naked Gun fame!

  19. msb on March 5th, 2008 1:29 pm

he has those Jim Leyritz bulgy temples

  20. whiskeychainsaw on March 5th, 2008 2:05 pm

Okay, moderately off topic, but [deleted, off-topic]

  21. julian on March 5th, 2008 2:46 pm

Oakland’s Jerry Blevins is listed at 6’6, 175, making him the same weight as Ichiro but about 8 inches taller. Ummm, ok.

  22. abender20 on March 5th, 2008 3:08 pm

    felix at 218? excellent!

21 – about the most fun you can have is finding those odd pairs of guys who weight the same but are drastically different in height, or vice versa…

My stash goes back only to 2003.
In all of them, Ichiro goes 5’9″ and 172 pounds.

I don’t want this to sound too obnoxious, but the most interesting stuff people can find to post about is speculation about the inaccuracy of height and weight listings??

Also I can’t hear his (Placido Polanco’s) name without thinking of Enrico Palazzo of The Naked Gun fame!

Me either. When the Tigers got him from the Phillies my first thought was “don’t they already have a tenor?”

  27. smb on March 6th, 2008 8:57 am

    HOLYEFFWTFOMG!

Al Martin led the Pac-10 in tackles two years in a row??

  28. abender20 on March 6th, 2008 4:57 pm

I heard Al Martin would have won the Heisman if the CIA didn’t send him in to Russia to stop Communism.

  29. abender20 on March 6th, 2008 5:00 pm

For anyone confused on the Al Martin discussion (if that’s possible), Martin probably had the biggest discrepancy possible, whether or not it made the media guide. I hope for comedy’s sake that it did.

  30. joser on March 7th, 2008 1:52 am

And note the date on that. Martin, in an attempt to distract the media from this issue, engineered a terrorist attack less than two weeks later.
