Yup. Not a lot of hot news to discuss in Mariner land.

How worried should we be that Ichiro is 0-21[?] I know its only spring training, but when does the alarm sound? Don’t sleep on the Brew Crew they are a legit World Series contender, [I] live in WI and we know what[‘]s going on. Too bad the M’s can’t find [their] way.

  2. Mr. Egaas on March 12th, 2008 9:13 am

I like the Brewers, a lot.

I think Cameron was a good pickup, moving Braun to the OF, and giving Hall another go in the infield. Their defense is quite improved by all of these moves and they have the offense to do some damage.

If only Dave Bush and Chris Capuano would live up to their potential, the Brewers could be one of the top teams in the NL.

  3. dlb on March 12th, 2008 9:24 am

What are the thoughts around the M’s roster? Is it conceivable that either Bloomquist or Bloomquist Part II will be cut to keep Morse and/or Reed. It seems like if they are looking for position depth Morse has that covered so keeping three players for position flexibility is really redundant. I know its wishful thinking that they will cut Cairo or Bloomie, but it has to at least be entering into someone’s mind down there.

  4. Jeff Nye on March 12th, 2008 9:31 am

I can’t see how they don’t punt Cairo at this point, but who knows.

How worried should we be that Ichiro is 0-21[?] … when does the alarm sound?

On a worry-scale from 1 – 100, where 1 equals “not the least bit worried for even a millisecond” to 100 being “full-blown panic” ??

    0.

  6. Gomez on March 12th, 2008 9:37 am

I can. A team doesn’t spend 800K on a guy they punt after ST. By that logic, they should have punted HoRam midway through last year.

  7. Doc Baseball on March 12th, 2008 9:38 am

I can’t see how they don’t punt Cairo at this point, but who knows.

Yeah, but you probably couldn’t see what a great idea it was to sign him in the first place, either….

  8. Doc Baseball on March 12th, 2008 9:42 am

By that logic, they should have punted HoRam midway through last year.

Either that, or, um, I don’t know, sign him to a new nearly-three-million-dollar contract to pitch in Tacoma….

  9. Jeff Nye on March 12th, 2008 9:43 am

Well, we’re all aware that the Mariners actually operate in Bizarro World.

If the decision was made based on, you know, actual baseball reasons, Cairo’d be gone.

  10. Stuck in Angel Country on March 12th, 2008 9:55 am

Anyone else see Sportscenter last night when they ran the story of Beckett’s back pain? 90% of the clips they showed was of him striking out Mariners.

  11. Doc Baseball on March 12th, 2008 10:08 am

If the decision was made based on, you know, actual baseball reasons, Cairo’d be gone.

What … a 34-year-old righty in Safeco who no one else in baseball wanted, who’s pounding out a .517 OPS in spring training — aren’t those good enough baseball reasons for ya ?

  12. thefin190 on March 12th, 2008 10:15 am

10 – Yea, I saw that when I was jogging at the gym last night. It looked like he struckout Ichiro, Lopez, Beltre, and Sexson, twice. Looks like Beckett struck out 8 in that game, so it probably gave ESPN plenty of good strikeout clips.

  13. Mo Vaughn Is My Hero on March 12th, 2008 10:32 am

    3. I actually wouldn’t cut Princess Willie. He’s useful for the fact that he can play almost any position and he’s a good pinch runner. He’s not a starter but any means, but he’s much more useful than Cairo.

  14. Jeff Nye on March 12th, 2008 10:38 am

Plus he looks better on a pink pony than Cairo would.

  15. MickieB on March 12th, 2008 10:40 am

I knew the ponies would start to fly as soon as someone suggested that we keep WFB.

  16. Doc Baseball on March 12th, 2008 10:56 am

I think the bees should start to swarm as soon as anyone suggests the M’s keep Cairo….

Ichiro went 0-21 in the regular season in 2005 (7/31-8/5). Of course as we all know that marked the end of his career; he never hit again and was so useless everyone regretted sending him to the all-star game, giving him a new contract, etc.

In reality, that was his worst seasoni in the US. He barely hit .300 and barely managed 200 hits in the 2005 season (though he still went to the all-star game) — a bad season for Ichiro is something almost every other hitter aspires to. His 2006 was better, his 2007 better still. Clearly Ichiro can withstand a slump.

When it’s May 1st and he doesn’t have a hit, you can officially record me as worried. Until then, I’m with Doc: I don’t care. Ichiro knows more about hitting than almost anyone alive, and he knows more about how he hits (and how to get back on track when he doesn’t) than anyone.

The Willie vs Cairo battle for the last bench spot worries me more (not who wins it, but that these are our choices).

  18. Mr. Egaas on March 12th, 2008 11:18 am

I wouldn’t doubt it if he got 3 hits in all of spring training and went 4-5 on opening day.

Not worried about Ichiro one bit, as long as he’s fully healthy.

  19. Jeff Nye on March 12th, 2008 11:20 am

I very deliberately don’t pay much attention to spring training results, for that very reason.

There is no reason to be worried about Ichiro!, at all.

Quote of the day from the Dayton Daily news:

Hall of Fame president Dale Petroskey was in camp Tuesday and while the Hall of Fame decides which team’s hat a player gets on his plaque, Petroskey decided, for his own information, to ask Ken Griffey Jr. whether he would wear Seattle or Cincinnati.

“It won’t be red (Cincinnati),” said Griffey. “It will be blue (Seattle).”

We’ve heard it before, but it’s nice to hear it again.

  21. Mike Honcho on March 12th, 2008 11:28 am

HoRam has been released, per Baker. Ding-dong, the witch is dead.

  22. Dash on March 12th, 2008 11:28 am

    HoRam Released

Ho-Ram released (Per Baker’s blog). And I probably completely screwed up the link.

  23. joser on March 12th, 2008 11:28 am

The Seattle Pilots are well-positioned to take advantage of the down-cycle for the Astros and Cardinals, though the Cubs are always out there, lurking, and if Lou can ever solve whatever their curse is….(maybe renaming Wrigley Field will do it?)

The trouble is, there are stronger teams coming out of the West and East, so it’s definitely an uphill slog. The last time they won anything in the post-season was what, 1981-82? When they were still in the AL East? It’s kind of amusing that they’ve been failing to win their leauge longer than they’ve actually been in it.

  24. joser on March 12th, 2008 11:32 am

Ok, I had heard that McLaren told the Japanese press that Ichiro was going to Tacoma for a few weeks (in jest) but I missed this.

Suzuki said he is enjoying the streak.
“Part of me said, ‘Go through,’ so it can be a hit,” Suzuki said of the grounder to third. “Another part of me said, ‘Make this an out so the streak can continue.'”

That’s why there’s nothing to worry about. Have I mentioned I love Ichiro!?

  25. Mr. Egaas on March 12th, 2008 11:34 am

Yay Dickey will make the team!

  26. fdeezle on March 12th, 2008 11:35 am

    How about this for exciting:

HoRam placed on waivers for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release.

  27. Jeff Nye on March 12th, 2008 11:35 am

I hope I fixed that for you alright, Dash.

  28. joser on March 12th, 2008 11:36 am

So they only wasted ~$450K on HoRam. That’s what, about half-a-Bloomquist? I guess in the scheme of things that’s not an unreasonable amount to take a flyer on a random pitcher in ST to see if he has something. The problem is, this wasn’t a random pitcher and the Mariners knew (or should’ve known) exactly what he had. Which was nothing.

At least they didn’t let him put the team in the hole with four cratered starts or something before they figured this out.

  29. Mr. Egaas on March 12th, 2008 11:37 am

They also wasted the current closer for the Atlanta Braves, Rafael Soriano.

    He’s pretty good, you know.

  30. Swungonandbelted on March 12th, 2008 11:38 am

They only ended up trading a stud reliever for a year of crappy pitching, and $450k…… /golf clap Bavasi

  31. reality3 on March 12th, 2008 11:39 am

Can we assume that they are going with a 5 man bench now?

  32. joser on March 12th, 2008 11:46 am

Please, don’t remind me. There’s the cost of acquiring him, and then there’s the cost of keeping him. Last year was last year, I try not to think about it.

I wouldn’t assume this changes anything about the 12 man pitching staff except there’s a different 12th man. When asked about that during a game a few days ago, Lee Pelekoudas said something to the effect that “it’s really hard not to have a 12 man pitching staff” and claimed () that most teams use one.

“We did not believe Horacio was going to break camp with us,” Mariners GM Bill Bavasi said in a release. “We felt it would be in everyone’s best interest to give him time to catch on with another club.”

    “Catch on”?

In related news, pitching staffs all over the grapefruit and cactus leagues have been calling in sick. “Yes,” said one trainer, “They’re all catching something. We think it’s HoRam. It’s been going around.”

  33. Gomez on March 12th, 2008 11:49 am

Yeah, well, never mind about my HoRam remark then.

  34. astroboy on March 12th, 2008 11:52 am

HoRam is gone! This gives me a warm happy feeling in my tummy, or maybe that’s just the coffee I just drank… Anyway, I’m happy.

  35. Dash on March 12th, 2008 12:05 pm

Thank you Mr. Nye. Just knew I was going to mess that up.

  36. msb on March 12th, 2008 1:26 pm

Horacio, Weaver and Kyle Lohse can have a little confab about ‘catching on’

  37. joser on March 12th, 2008 1:29 pm

Jason Kendall was the best the Brewers could do for a catcher? And they think he’s worth $4.25M?

  38. mln on March 12th, 2008 2:14 pm

Is Ichiro still hitless this Spring? He must be saving all his hits for the regular season. 😉

  39. msb on March 12th, 2008 2:17 pm

Jason Kendall was the best the Brewers could do for a catcher?

hey, he is now A Proven Veteran, and somewhere along the line received the “Handles Young Pitchers Well” imprimatur.

  40. msb on March 12th, 2008 2:36 pm

    five unearned runs later ….

  41. fermorules on March 13th, 2008 1:15 pm

It took the entire 2007 season….

    The entire winter….

And half of spring training in 2008….

For Billy B to figure out Horacio Ramirez can’t pitch!….

(Or perhaps he was just stubborn in admitting his mistake)….
