Matthew Carruth Writes Several Tons Of Great Stuff
You probably know by now that we’re big fans of Lookout Landing. Jeff Sullivan does yeoman’s work over there, and if you read USSM, you really should be reading LL too.
Well, recently, Matthew Carruth (who also edits and writes for the Hardball Times) has posted a string of informative entries over there that everyone should read. It’s just really good stuff.
GPA: A better OPS: I don’t totally agree with him here and find GPA to be not particularly useful, but it’s still worth reading.
The BaseRuns Model: BaseRuns is awesome but kinda nerdy. If you don’t mind being somewhat nerdy, click away.
Mariners OF defense: 2003-2007: Inspired by Derek’s post on the same subject. Must read.
Trying to Track True Team Talent: Another fundamental article that sets the groundwork for real analysis.
Seeing the World Pitch By Pitch: Again, absolutely essential reading for a better understanding of how pitching works.
We think we put out a pretty regular stream of good content here, but by no means do we have the market cornered. Matthew’s work is simply outstanding and deserves a larger audience.

I read LL as diligently as I read USSM. I kept reading these posts by “Matthew.” I kept wondering who he was because he was awful smart. I just didn’t make the connection he was the guy that is at THT. Definatly must-read stuff.
Matthew rocks! I’m definitely a neophyte to sabr-stuff, but his writing definitely makes these seemingly fundamental concepts (to the more experienced statheads) a lot easier for me to understand.
GPA somehow manages to be less useful than OPS, which is hard to do. I’m not sure why anyone would ever use it, ever, but then, I hate OPS, so…
But yeah! The rest of that stuff is great!
No doubt. His articles over there lately have been blowing me away. Really looking forward to seeing where he goes next with the pitch by pitch data.
DMZ or Dave, Can you give an explanation for not liking GPA?
Dave explains his objections in the comment thread over at LL.
Anything that makes Ibanez appear as valuable as Ichiro! is not worth using, in my opinion.
Part of the thrill of being part of this whole “sabermetric” movement or whatever are all the new homemade stats coming along. Some, like GPA I think, will fall by the wayside. Others, like maybe BaseRuns, will stick around. It’s sorta like statistical deathmatch. The best eventually win out.
Matthew can also own you for free in football. Covering him is like trying to tackle Barry Sanders: just forget it.
So yes, we’re talking about a smart and multitalented writer in Matthew Carruth.
