Bedard v Wang.

Sorry I didn’t get this up earlier, I’m still battling with the plumbing at Haus Zumsteg (I hate compression fittings, btw)

We get Balentien in RF, Burke at C and Clement at DH (batting 5th!).
    yippee!!!

  2. Say Hey on May 2nd, 2008 4:11 pm

After last night, this is gonna be a big series. If the Ms can take 2 of 3, I’ll feel a whole lot better after the rough Cleveland series. Tough that Bedard draws Wang, but hopefully Felix will be Felix tomorrow….

  3. G-Man on May 2nd, 2008 4:13 pm

If we can’t beat this Yankees lineup, we’d better qu –

Oh, wait, Wang’s pitching. Never mind.

  4. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 4:16 pm

With that wind there could be some interesting fly balls. Both Ichiro! and Ibanez crushed there flys and only got it to the warning tracks.

  5. nwtrev on May 2nd, 2008 4:18 pm

2- Well he should be gassed after that 9 pitch inning. I’m “watching” it on GameDay. Were those fastballs right in the middle of the strike zone?

  6. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 4:18 pm

We’re in Yankee Stadium….they’ll score that a base hit

  7. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 4:18 pm

    ok, nevermind.

  8. robbbbbb on May 2nd, 2008 4:25 pm

    Compression fittings suck.

  9. SpokaneMsFan on May 2nd, 2008 4:27 pm

So if gameday is accurate he just served up a high fastball right over the freaking middle on an 0-2 count, that about right?

  10. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 4:27 pm

An error, a Dink, and a Dunk.
    ugh

  11. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 4:28 pm

An error and two balls hit about 150 feet. Dumb.

  12. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 4:28 pm

8 – Well, he broke his bat on a high fastball with movement that was flared to left and *barely* cleared the infield dirt.

IF that’s “served up” than I guess so.

  13. DMZ on May 2nd, 2008 4:28 pm

I wish I knew of an alternative, but I’ve got 1/2 inch copper stub outs, so I don’t know what else I have available. If there were nice brass valves that I could solder that went to 3/8 compression for the sinks etc, I’d be all over them… but I haven’t seen ‘em.

    Stupid Yankees.

  14. Karen on May 2nd, 2008 4:30 pm

Jeter, Matsui and possibly Damon are the only ones in that lineup that can reliably dink and dunk, everyone else is pretty borderline. How about Bedard being a little more careful with those three from how on?

  15. SpokaneMsFan on May 2nd, 2008 4:30 pm

Thanks MedicineHat I feel better after getting that description.

  16. DMZ on May 2nd, 2008 4:31 pm

Was this Clement’s first trip? The M’s played in Yankee Stadium last October.

  17. DMZ on May 2nd, 2008 4:31 pm

A walk? What team does Clement think he’s on?

  18. red_devil20 on May 2nd, 2008 4:33 pm

Not watching game. Was Yuni’s error a bad error, or a tough play?

  19. kyoko on May 2nd, 2008 4:38 pm

So when did Wang start throwing a great slider?

  20. AZ Ms Fan on May 2nd, 2008 4:38 pm

Thats 4 k’s in the past 2 games for Wlad.

  21. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 4:39 pm

red_devil20- Bad error on an easy play, tried to backhand it and never got the glove down.

  22. red_devil20 on May 2nd, 2008 4:42 pm

    Thanks HamNasty.

  23. kyoko on May 2nd, 2008 4:43 pm

Beddard’s curve is a thing of beauty

  24. scott19 on May 2nd, 2008 4:43 pm

Got a chuckle out of Rizzy’s interview with A-Rod on the pre-game, where Alex said he “couldn’t wait to get back to play at Safeco” (in September) because the fans in Seattle have always been so good to him.

If he’s including since 2001 in that “always”, he must truly be a masochist. :)

  25. G-Man on May 2nd, 2008 4:45 pm

    That’s interference!

  26. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 4:46 pm

    Catch the damn ball!

  27. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 4:46 pm

    Holy crap!

Error in the 1st, Error in the 2nd. What should be an error on Lopez, but they can’t actually charge him with one on that perfect throw to 2nd by Burke.

  28. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 4:47 pm

Bad defense leads to two more runs.

  29. billT on May 2nd, 2008 4:47 pm

One of the best defenses in the game on fine display this evening.

  30. felixday on May 2nd, 2008 4:47 pm

    fair ball….crap

  31. RoninX on May 2nd, 2008 4:48 pm

Here we go… down by two runs. Guess we might as well call it a night.

  32. mr.smartypants on May 2nd, 2008 4:48 pm

ARRGGGH – The Mariners defense owes Bedard a couple of beers after this one. 2 legit hits and somehow the Yankees are up 3-0.

  33. jefffrane on May 2nd, 2008 4:55 pm

Oy. What kind of game is it when Sexson is the only infielder that can catch a ball?

  34. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 4:55 pm

The M’s wasting no time snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

  35. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 4:57 pm

They gave the E4 on the steal. 1/3rd of our team has an error 2 innings in.

  36. DMZ on May 2nd, 2008 4:59 pm

Not everyone thought the M’s defense would be a strength.

  37. robbbbbb on May 2nd, 2008 4:59 pm

My one bit of work with compression fittings sucked. I feel your pain. You’re right. No alternative.

And a ground ball to Jeter’s left and through! Boy, I’ve never seen that before. He really is a terrible defender.

  38. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 5:00 pm

Burke just saw a first inning worth of pitches.

  39. msb on May 2nd, 2008 5:01 pm

I tuned in pretty much as Betancourt dropped the ball, then had to take a phone call and got back in time for Lopez’ error.

sadly, this one seems pretty much done for the day. oh, thank goodness, futile diving by the Captain.

I’m still battling with the plumbing at Haus Zumsteg

well, if the house is of the same vintage/builder as ours was a few blocks north, the plumbing & sewer system was a constant adventure.

  40. msb on May 2nd, 2008 5:07 pm

you know, the year thus far has not really been anything that might entice Bedard to re-up with the Ms in another year ….

  41. nwtrev on May 2nd, 2008 5:08 pm

I read somewhere (Baker?) that Ms are 0-11 when they trail by two or more runs at any point. But it’s May now! Isn’t everything supposed to get better in May?

  42. SpokaneMsFan on May 2nd, 2008 5:11 pm

I think I read we are 0-9 in games we scored less than 4 runs in too. Not a good combination.

  43. joser on May 2nd, 2008 5:11 pm

Going back and reading stories from the pre-season is always amusing. “Mariners banking on deep rotation, strong defense

  44. scott19 on May 2nd, 2008 5:12 pm

sadly, this one seems pretty much done for the day

    Especially against Wang, yeah probably.

BTW, Derek, I feel for ya…plumbing issues suck!

  45. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 5:12 pm

    4th error!

  46. G-Man on May 2nd, 2008 5:13 pm

Quick, what’s the team record for E’s in a game?

  47. dlb on May 2nd, 2008 5:14 pm

Nice to see the M’s aren’t mentally prepared to play the Yankees. Yeesh. What an embarrassment.

  48. Colm on May 2nd, 2008 5:15 pm

    Good Lord.
Four errors and a hit batter:
The Black Sox played better than this when they threw the World Series.

  49. jefffrane on May 2nd, 2008 5:15 pm

Niehaus appears to be living any time but now, but I’m not sure I blame him, given how this game is going.

  50. kyoko on May 2nd, 2008 5:19 pm

That HBP call was the worst umpire call I’ve ever seen – it wass a strike, it didn’t hit the batter and the better moved toward it.

  51. nwtrev on May 2nd, 2008 5:19 pm

    Found it

The M’s are now 4-13 in those games in which they do not score more than four. They are also now 0-11 in games in which they trail by two or more runs at any point. That’s a bad sign of offensive weakness.

Bolding mine. Understatement of the year.

  52. juustabitoutside on May 2nd, 2008 5:20 pm

I love hearing Niehaus reminisce. I wish they would let him do color. It’s his eyes that betray him.

  53. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 5:20 pm

I remember when Edgar Martinez once made four errors in one game.

  54. scott19 on May 2nd, 2008 5:21 pm

To say this is not sharpest played game I’ve ever seen by the boys would be an understatement.

  55. jefffrane on May 2nd, 2008 5:22 pm

    A hit! A veritable hit!

  56. joser on May 2nd, 2008 5:23 pm

I think the record for errors in a game is something like 12, by a couple of teams back in the 1900s or 1910s. There’s probably a postwar record but I don’t know what it is.

  57. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 5:24 pm

Need to get this run in to get some MOmentum going.

  58. joser on May 2nd, 2008 5:26 pm

And to think the M’s had Wang for $1M in 2000, before the Yanks offered $1.9M.

  59. scott19 on May 2nd, 2008 5:27 pm

For some reason, I’m thinking there had to be a game where Russ Davis made at least three errors at third base.

  60. msb on May 2nd, 2008 5:36 pm

I remember when Edgar Martinez once made four errors in one game.

    so does Edgar.

Neihaus just snarked that on this trip into NY the game likely won’t be interrupted by a message from Roger Clemens :)

  61. msb on May 2nd, 2008 5:37 pm

    oh, shame indeed.

  62. scott19 on May 2nd, 2008 5:39 pm

If “The Rocket” keeps collecting much more baggage, he’ll have enough to run for public office soon. :)

  63. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 5:40 pm

Waitresses, Country Singers and Pro-Golfers ex-wives.

You have to belong to an exclusinve group to be in with the Rocket.

  64. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 5:42 pm

The best news for the M’s today…blisters for Wang.

  65. msb on May 2nd, 2008 5:45 pm

not enough to keep the Ms from GIDP once more.

  66. marinersfan33 on May 2nd, 2008 5:45 pm

    i hate betancourt right now

  67. SpokaneMsFan on May 2nd, 2008 5:46 pm

Are we excited for 2009 yet!?

  68. smb on May 2nd, 2008 5:46 pm

Blisters, eh? I guess that NY nightclub scene really is as dangerous as they say.

  69. smb on May 2nd, 2008 5:47 pm

    SpokaneM’sFan,

Why, do you have reason to believe we’ll be better? Don’t crush my hopes now…

  70. Lefebvre Belebvre on May 2nd, 2008 5:52 pm

Since this year is already starting to set. Where do we go from here for next year? Assuming the starting pitchers all return, where do we go to add a reliever or two, and, more importantly, who replaces Sexson and Vidro?

Who are the main offensive free agents for 2009?

  71. SpokaneMsFan on May 2nd, 2008 5:52 pm

I’m just echoing the sentiment Jeff at Lookout Landing said. Realistic pessimism about the present but unfounded optimism for the future. I’m paraphrasing but it was something like that. I mean you can’t look at this team and think playoffs, but it is theoretically possible we get a new GM and make some good moves in the offseason.

  72. scott19 on May 2nd, 2008 5:52 pm

You have to belong to an exclusinve group to be in with the Rocket.

Of course, he could also have been “Client #10″…

Or, “#11″ — since Sean Avery was on her “list” as well! :)

  73. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 6:00 pm

You have to have ZERO confidence in your batters to steal third with less than 2 outs down by 3. Basically you are saying, I know we can’t get a hit, so we need him on third so a groundout/flyball can score him.

  74. JerBear on May 2nd, 2008 6:00 pm

Ichiro knows that sac flies are this team’s only hope…

  75. kyoko on May 2nd, 2008 6:00 pm

Ichiro should just hit a home run for all the help he gets from the rest of the lineup

  76. smb on May 2nd, 2008 6:04 pm

    SpokaneMsFan,

Right on. Optimism…without it, we’re Pirates fans.

  77. msb on May 2nd, 2008 6:05 pm

I had to go look up Edgar’s bad day; it was in ‘90, and at the time it was notable as he was thought to play a good defensive 3B:

“Craig Worthington, leading off the second inning, smacked a two-hopper to Martinez. The ball hit leather and then bounced behind Martinez for his first error, and, as it turned out, the costliest. A walk to Brad Komminsk, one-out single by Bob Melvin and a wild pitch scored the first run and after Johnson walked Phil Bradley, Mike Devereaux singled home two runs before Cal Ripken flied out.

Martinez’ glove betrayed Johnson once again in the seventh, however. Bradley led off and his routine grounder was knocked down by Martinez, (error No. 2) and then thrown away at first (error No. 3). An infield out moved Bradley to third and Ripken followed with a one-hopper to Martinez. He gloved the ball, but in his haste to get Bradley at the plate, Martinez dropped it for his fourth bobble.”

  78. scott19 on May 2nd, 2008 6:06 pm

Niehaus just mentioned that the “diamond club”-equivalent seats at the new Yankee Stadium will be going for $2500 per game. Yikes!

  79. msb on May 2nd, 2008 6:06 pm

oh, I would love for them to come back on Kyle Farnsworth.

  80. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 6:10 pm

I went to the bar after the 2nd because the M’s make me die inside but it looks like we are getting the Bedard of advertised.

  81. msb on May 2nd, 2008 6:18 pm

  82. smb on May 2nd, 2008 6:19 pm

    scott19,

My brother down south in the ‘couve called me from his car as soon as he heard that. Made me guess the price, I guessed $600 a pop. The sad part is they could charge twice that $2500 and still sell them out, only then they’d have Calvin Klein wandering onto the field in a daze during the game.

  83. Lefebvre Belebvre on May 2nd, 2008 6:19 pm

This Bedard guy is lights out!

Too bad the offense is horrendous. But don’t worry. Come August, when we are 17 games out, the offense will “relax” and start hitting the cover off the ball to get their average stats where they are expected to be.

  84. red_devil20 on May 2nd, 2008 6:20 pm

Holy Crap, Mackey Sasser played left field for us?

  85. realsmack on May 2nd, 2008 6:26 pm

man I like watching Bedard. Almost makes me no miss Jamie.

  86. realsmack on May 2nd, 2008 6:26 pm

    ahem, “not.”

  87. red_devil20 on May 2nd, 2008 6:28 pm

Wait a minute… this substitution almost makes sense!

  88. red_devil20 on May 2nd, 2008 6:29 pm

not that it matters with a limp bat like Turbo’s

  89. PaulMolitorCocktail on May 2nd, 2008 6:30 pm

    [postulating]

If the Yankees can get away with charging $2500 for “diamond box” seats, all the other teams will start charging more too.

Maybe not $2500, but several hundred.

  90. scott19 on May 2nd, 2008 6:30 pm

Poor Erik…a great start, yet winds up getting burned by the piss-poor defense.

80: Wow…I know it happened, but it’s hard to picture either Junior or Oly making two errors in a game.

81: Too bad Rudy Giuliani burned up his fortune running for pres — now he can’t afford those diamond club seats! :)

  91. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 6:33 pm

I called that hit! Ichiro! was pissed after that high inside FB.

  92. red_devil20 on May 2nd, 2008 6:34 pm

Maybe Ichi can steal 3rd and home too

  93. DMZ on May 2nd, 2008 6:35 pm

msb: I wrote a whole post about the plumbing.

I still can’t believe when they put these things up that they made some of those choices. The foundation is beautiful, the frame is great, but they ran the supply pipes under the driveway to a utility room and from there, they go underground and punch through a gap in the foundation wall into the crawlspace.

    It’s frankly inexplicable.

  94. DMZ on May 2nd, 2008 6:35 pm

That’s not a balk? He doesn’t step to home, but it’s still a move designed to deceive the runner, which is strictly prohibited.

  95. PaulMolitorCocktail on May 2nd, 2008 6:43 pm

Speaking of the bullpen, Turnbow has been DFA’ed… has he lost it completely? Worth a shot?

  96. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 6:43 pm

The bullpen is in…this is where it goes from 3-1 to 7-1…in a hurry.

  97. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 6:43 pm

Someone let the offense know that the starters are not giving up 6 runs in the first inning like last year and scoring runs actually matters.

  98. MedicineHat on May 2nd, 2008 6:44 pm

DMZ – It is “supposed” to be strictly prohibited…but that move is never called a balk.

  99. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 6:53 pm

0-21 against lefties this year and RRS walks him. Sounds about right.

  100. PaulMolitorCocktail on May 2nd, 2008 6:56 pm

Battlestar Galactica – a good excuse for me to avoid this travesty of a sham of a mockery.

  101. joser on May 2nd, 2008 6:56 pm

This bullpen is consistent. Reliable. You have to give them that.

  102. lylepdx on May 2nd, 2008 6:58 pm

    is it felix day, yet?

  103. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 6:58 pm

This team is frustrating beyond belief.

  104. bteddy on May 2nd, 2008 7:05 pm

There is not a clutch performer, a guy you can count on when everything else fails, in this entire lineup. It’s a flawed team.

  105. BlazerD on May 2nd, 2008 7:07 pm

This kid Clement has a great eye at the plate. Nice.

  106. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 7:09 pm

bteddy- I would take a few guys that can perform at the plate anytime. In 27 outs they got 1 run, and only because Ichiro is an excellent base stealer. They had to use an out to get that run in. The definition of inefficiency.

  107. seattlenative86 on May 2nd, 2008 7:20 pm

Bedard was awesome tonight but i got to school in ny and i was watching the game and the stupid yankee commentators said that we didn’t really give up much to get Bedard …

  108. BillyJive on May 2nd, 2008 7:41 pm

Why do I keep making time to watch these games?

Let’s start cleaning house..and please…start at the top!!!
I can’t take another season of being a contender…let’s be a rebuilding team…maybe it will lower my expectations…

Bedard was fun to watch tonight…gotta love those Canadians *grin*

    *sigh*

  109. BurkeForPres on May 2nd, 2008 8:02 pm

Does anyone see us making the playoffs at this point in time? I sure don’t.

  110. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 8:07 pm

I think it would be much less frustrating if these close games were 6-8 losses instead of 2-3 losses.

Games where the M’s score 5 or more runs: 9-2
Games where the M’s score 4 or less runs: 4-15
Games where the opposing team scores 4 or less: 9-6

Bedard is amazing Felix is a God, but pitching doesn’t win games.

  111. HamNasty on May 2nd, 2008 8:09 pm
  112. msb on May 2nd, 2008 8:23 pm

    Playoffs?

some guy on the postgame show thinks they could, if the defense and the bullpen and the guys hitting into double-plays would just get better….

I still can’t believe when they put these things up that they made some of those choices. The foundation is beautiful, the frame is great, but they ran the supply pipes under the driveway to a utility room and from there, they go underground and punch through a gap in the foundation wall into the crawlspace.

ours was one of those split level models you see on every street ’round there, with the basement cut into the dirt, and as far as I could tell, the plumbing laid on the dirt right under the concrete flooring. water used to come up out of the shower drain with great regularity. I liked the photos, they were most illuminating, and sadly more interesting that this game.

as is listening to part of Lou’s eruption yesterday as replayed on KOMO, especially with the added soundtrack of those who have covered Lou in the past– giggling at the fool in Chi who asked Lou if he’d thought about doing something different in the game (”*snort* you never ask Lou if he thought about something– he’s lucky he didn’t get a ’son’ with that answer”)

  113. fermorules on May 2nd, 2008 8:49 pm

KOMO makes fun of Lou, sure, but never is heard a discouraging word about the M’s. In fact, it’s a complete waste of time to listen to the announcers and “commentators” of Mariner broadcasts on KOMO or FSN. I understand being homers, yes, but when everyone is afraid of losing their job by saying anything critical about the team, that’s no good. It’s almost like the old Iron Curtain days.

Let’s face it, this particular Seattle team is a pathetic and lifeless bunch. The hitters’ whole approach to hitting is flawed, and the relievers are allowed to walk the ballpark without so much as a chewing out. The only thing this team has is starting pitching and it’s being wasted.

I hate to say it, but this team needs a Lou Piniella-type to come in and at least light a fire under some players’ butts. This team has way too many guys who swagger their way through life, convinced they’re the chosen ones merely because they’re in “The Show”. Or worse yet, players who make $14 mil a year and whine about being booed.

If I sound irritated it’s because when I watch this team it’s obvious to me they don’t have an ounce of guts. Winning ball games consistently is difficult work and the ability to handle pressure. This team takes the easy way out every time. A sad, sad excuse for a major league baseball team.

  114. Dave on May 2nd, 2008 8:56 pm

Alright, who had May 2nd in the “when fans start blaming the team’s record on a lack of heart and pine for Lou Piniella” pool?

Occam’s razor – this team isn’t losing because they aren’t motivated or have too much swagger. This team is losing because they’re a mediocre club, which has been obvious to most of us since it was compiled.

I think we’ll all enjoy the season a little more when we realize this.

Seemed like another typical M’s loss. I’m glad I went to see Iron Man instead.

    How was it?

    How was it?

Let me just say it’s a helluva lot more entertaining than watching the Mariners offense.

But yeah, Robert Downey Jr. kicked ass.

No kidding! I was getting ready to go out tonight, and thus was just getting out of the shower as the KOMO post-game was on…anyway, I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard one of the (five or so) callers who got through actually hit the nail bang-on by correctly pointing out to Glasgow and Valle just how anemic the offense has been. I started thinking, “Wow, how the hell did this guy ever get past the screener…they’ll probably block him so that he’ll never be able to get through again!”

    KOMO makes fun of Lou

they were not making fun of Lou. What was obvious is how much they all love Lou, and enjoyed covering him over the years. If they were having fun at anyone’s expense, it was those members of the Chicago press who haven’t yet learned how best to phrase a question after a horrible loss & a Piniella melt-down.

but never is heard a discouraging word about the M’s

so you’ve missed Glasgow on the subject of the poor defense, the poor offense, and the spotty bullpen the last week or so? it really depends on who is in there– Pitman is much more of a cheerleader than Glasgow.
