An Update
A few months ago, I put up a post mentioning that my girlfriend was running a marathon in Alaska this June to raise money for leukemia and lymphoma research. Well, I wanted to give you guys a couple of updates.
First off, she stands all of $13 away from her goal of $5,000, and you guys were a huge part of that, giving almost $2,500 in a day. She was overwhelmed by your generosity, and both her and I can’t thank you guys enough for being willing to give to a great cause. Thank you.
And, as a further update, she’s actually not my girlfriend anymore. As of yesterday, she’s now my fiancee`. I proposed in front of Elk Falls in the mountains of North Carolina, and her response was “Are You Serious?”. Apparently, even when dating a blogger, it’s hard to imagine that they’ll ever actually propose. She did say yes once the shock wore off, at least.
We’re probably headed towards an October or November wedding, which means that I’m officially rooting for the Mariners to not win it all this year. Feel free to suck eggs and not be playing meaningful baseball this winter, fellas. You have my permission.

Nice work Dave! Congrats man!
I think the Mariners just might take you up on that offer.
May 6th, 2008 at 5:29 amHey alright. Congrats to you both and way to go on the fundraising, doubly so as I am a direct beneficiary of any such efforts working in a cancer immunology lab.
May 6th, 2008 at 5:30 amAlso, “are you serious?” isn’t that bad. . . my wife threw up.
May 6th, 2008 at 5:30 amCongratulations Dave and the same to the future Mrs. Cameron. Elk Falls huh? When my gf returns from the Peace Corps I was thinking the outer banks.
Here is to a long and happy future for the both of you.
May 6th, 2008 at 5:36 amDavid posted this 29 December 2003:
(can’t access the rest of the post as it lacks a headline)
May 6th, 2008 at 5:48 amIn any event, good that you’ve changed your mind. Congratulations!
Congratulations Dave!
May 6th, 2008 at 6:04 amDave, that is awesome news on many levels. Congratulations to the both of you!
May 6th, 2008 at 6:07 amI proposed to my wife at the The Five Spot, the restaurant where we had our first date–at the table where we had our first date. At the moment I popped the question, a waitress came up to give her her Diet Coke. You’ve never seen a waitress run away so fast in all your life.
Congrats, Dave, and all the best to both of you. Marriage absolutely rocks.
May 6th, 2008 at 6:12 amGreat story. Thanks for putting a smile on my face this morning.
May 6th, 2008 at 6:27 amMy wife had the same response when I asked her to marry me. Good memories. I have to remember to tease her about it again. Congrats!
May 6th, 2008 at 6:31 amCongratulations, Dave!
My fiancee’s first reaction was to look at the larger-than-expected ring and say, “where did you get this?!”
Once she remembered to answer my question first (”Yes!”), I explained that I’d gotten it from my grandmother, so she didn’t need to worry about me spending large piles of our hard-earned money.
May 6th, 2008 at 6:35 amCongratulations!
(I’m hoping her family doesn’t think of bloggers the way Bissinger does)
May 6th, 2008 at 6:37 amI haven’t had the best luck with the institution myself, but congratulations on your engagement. My parents just celebrated their 65th, so obviously I was just doing something wrong — marriage can be done.
May 6th, 2008 at 6:37 amFirstly- congratulations!
May 6th, 2008 at 6:40 amSecondly- The Mariners winning the WS would only be appropriate (if not EXTREMELY unlikely). Then you, your wife, Felix, and Ichiro could all get Rings at the same time.
Congratulations! Best wishes to both of you.
May 6th, 2008 at 6:44 amMany congrats, may you pop out little sabermetricians for years to come!
May 6th, 2008 at 6:47 amCheers!
May 6th, 2008 at 7:05 amCongratulations Dave and the future Mrs. Cameron!
Nice work.
May 6th, 2008 at 7:11 amWait, let me get this straight, you proposed when it wasn’t even Felix day?…
Congrats!
May 6th, 2008 at 7:28 amWow, congratulations!
May 6th, 2008 at 7:42 amCongratulations!
I will be eagerly anticipating the statistical analysis of who is better at taking out the garbage and changing diapers
May 6th, 2008 at 7:44 amCongrats Dave!
May 6th, 2008 at 7:59 amCongratulations to you and your future bride Mr. Cameron! I’d love to buy to both of you a couple rounds when you visit AK.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:03 amAwesome news, Dave. Congrats.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:13 amWell, that is one piece of bad news in this - she’s still going to Alaska, but I’m not going to be able to make it. The price of me getting up there and spending a few days in Anchorage is pretty high, and since I didn’t inherit a ring from my grandma, I’ve got other places where that money can go.
I’m still making the trip to Seattle, but I’m not going to make it to Alaska this summer, unfortunately.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:13 amDave,
Heartfelt congratulations to you both. May you have many years of peace and happiness together.
Cheers!
May 6th, 2008 at 8:17 amwell, we’ll just have to front up for the congratulatory pops of pop here, then.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:19 amCongrats Dave!
May 6th, 2008 at 8:20 amDude, congrats! That’s awesome.
Also, can you relink to her website so we can get that $5K finished off?
May 6th, 2008 at 8:22 amCongratulations!
You might want to think twice about that October wedding thing. Unless she is as big a baseball nut as you are, the potential for conflict when the M’s do eventually reach the playoffs and have a game on your anniversary is high.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:28 amCongratulations Dave. Do you know any good photographers?
May 6th, 2008 at 8:31 amCongratulations, Dave - that’s awesome! Marriage is good…not easy, but good.
My wife and I are expecting our first kid in a few months…now that’s a trip. We got engaged at Cannon Beach in Oregon…it was the day after New Years and was pretty rainy, but literally the moment I got down on my knee, there was a big break in the clouds - the sun hit us and the rain let up…it was a pretty sweet hookup.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:40 amWow. I just did it on Christmas morning in my pajamas. Good for you guys.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:54 amCongrats Dave! Our little baseball fanatic is all grown up! =)
We spent our honeymoon at Stephanie Inn. Cannon Beach is awesome (especially Pizza a’Fetta!).
May 6th, 2008 at 8:57 amPutting your girl before the M’s!!??!?! How dare you, sir!?!?!
Congrats! Best of luck.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:57 amAwe. Some.
Except, heh, I hope your blogging life doesn’t take the plunge with you. I’m sure you’ll find a way to keep on writing, even as you finally grow up and move out of your mom’s basement
May 6th, 2008 at 8:59 amCongratulations Dave. Do you know any good photographers?
Yeah, I think he knows one or two. At least…
May 6th, 2008 at 9:04 amCongrats Dave. So many blogger stereotypes to make fun of.
So a blogger actually knows a girl and some how fooled her into saying yes to a proposal. Is your mother’s basement big enough for the two of you to live in? Were you nervous about having to put pants on and leave your mother’s basement to propose? Did you consider an AIM style proposal so you could stay in your comfort zone?
Anyway, congrats man and good luck. I here October baseball is a great for of entertainment at almost every wedding reception, and cheaper than a band or DJ. Keep that in mind.
May 6th, 2008 at 9:06 amCongratulations Dave!
May 6th, 2008 at 9:17 amCongratulations Dave!
But be honest… you wouldn’t be looking at an October-November wedding date if the Ms had come storming out of the gates and Santana was 0-6 instead of 6-0… right?
May 6th, 2008 at 9:22 amcongrats.
May 6th, 2008 at 9:25 amCongratulations, Dave! My wife and I will be celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary in November, so I guess that’s evidence that Fall weddings can work. Among other things, we had an easier time getting a reception hall and such than if we’d had the wedding during the more popular spring or summer months. Best of luck.
May 6th, 2008 at 9:29 amCongratulations! That is really awesome, and best of everything to the both of you. My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary last October and are looking forward to many, many more. May you both find as much happiness in marriage as we have!
May 6th, 2008 at 9:34 amGood for you, Dave! My most heartfelt congratulations. I know for a fact she is a lucky woman to have found such a caring and compassionate guy, and though I’ve never met your future wife, I suspect you are a pretty lucky guy, as well.
Yesterday marked 19 years to the day that I met my wife. It’s been a great, wild ride along the way, but I can honestly say I believe you are heading into the best years of your life. Good luck, my friend.
Oh, and how can we put her fundraising goal over the top now? Refresh my memory….
May 6th, 2008 at 9:44 amCongratulations!
May 6th, 2008 at 9:46 amCongratulations! May God bless you overwhelmingly.
May 6th, 2008 at 9:52 amCongrats Dave. May your Value Over Replacement Husband be through the roof.
May 6th, 2008 at 9:53 amVery cool. Congratulations Dave!
May 6th, 2008 at 9:55 am#47
May 6th, 2008 at 9:56 amWe should probably use value over league avg husband. jk. Congrats Dave.
Congratulations and one bit of advice. Set the wedding for first week of November or later. I did that and it has saved me much heartache. This way the baseball playoffs will NEVER interfere with your anniversary.
Oh, and marriage really is awesome.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:00 amCongratulations Dave!
May 6th, 2008 at 10:06 amCongratulations on inviting the government to regulate your personal life. Nothing says enduring love like legal recognition…
Sec 108 has great advice. Get married on a date you’re fairly sure you won’t mind being busy every year. I recommend Veterans Day.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:16 amDid you present her with a spreadsheet detailing your VORF (Value Over Replacement Fiancee)?
May 6th, 2008 at 10:24 amCongrats Dave!
May 6th, 2008 at 10:31 amI can just see all the data that was presented with the proposal…..
Congratulations Dave, heres hoping the lack of sex after you get married (As I’m sure many married men here will attest), doesn’t make you even more grumpy.;)
May 6th, 2008 at 10:34 amDave, congratulations to you and your fiancee. And don’t worry about the Ms, your wedding is in great shape.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:38 amDave, that’s wonderful for both of you. I highly recommend marriage, so I’m always happy to see new recruits. Personally, I would recommend Halloween for a wedding, but that’s because I can never remember my anniversary and even I’d have trouble forgetting that.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:42 amCongrats Dave!
#57, my anniversary is on the 4th of July (Insert independance joke here) so I never forget it.
10 years this July!
May 6th, 2008 at 10:47 amCongratulations to the two of you, Dave! I’m amazed that between your day job, your photography biz, and your work for USSM, you still have time for a social life …
As for the wedding date, my wedding was October 27, 2001, the presumed date of Game 6 or (after the 9/11 cancellations) Game 1 of the World Series, and of course, it looked like a good possibility that year that the M’s were going to be there. It did make me feel kind of conflicted …
May 6th, 2008 at 10:50 amDAVE!!!
Congrats! “Are you serious” isn’t that bad… My fiance cried for like five minutes while I was down on my knee. Since I had arranged for some close friends to be there it led to some pretty akward looks between everyone. Every single picture we have of the night has her crying. Pretty funny stuff. I guess I would cry if I was stuck marrying me too though…
And on the time apart while she’s in Alaska, it’s really true that absinthe … errr absence makes the heart grow fonder. You can look forward to some of the best times in your relationship as your reunited. Congrats again!
May 6th, 2008 at 10:55 am(after the 9/11 cancellations)
Good friends of mine got married 2 weekends after 9/11. That was really rough. Half her family couldn’t make it, her brother got deployed right away. Hopefully yours went better, Gregor.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:59 amCongrats!
Any chance Willie Bloomquist is an ordained minister?
May 6th, 2008 at 11:03 amCongratulations Dave! Though I usually seem to have weird luck in my relationships, I’m always happy to see people find their true “soulmate”.
Best wishes and many blessings to both of you!
May 6th, 2008 at 11:09 amWell, that is one piece of bad news in this - she’s still going to Alaska, but I’m not going to be able to make it. The price of me getting up there and spending a few days in Anchorage is pretty high, and since I didn’t inherit a ring from my grandma, I’ve got other places where that money can go.
I’m still making the trip to Seattle, but I’m not going to make it to Alaska this summer, unfortunately.
Hmmm. I wonder if we could collectively Corco the Donate button enough to get you the extra ticket. I know you’d never ask for that, but that’s certainly something we can do to support your awesome efforts with the site.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:14 amCongratulations, Dave! She’s a lucky woman.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:16 amCongratulations on taking off the training wheels, Dave, and condolences to the future Ms. Cameron.
The minister who performed the ceremony for my wife and I 18 years ago insisted on giving us personality surveys in the weeks prior to the event. When we met with him for the results, he looked at us gravely and said, “Your marriage will be… interesting… but NEVER boring.” Looking back from 18 years, 2 kids, and 1700 miles away, I wish you the same… interesting and never boring rocks.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:16 amit’s here and it’s there…
May 6th, 2008 at 11:21 amhey, these guys might be available to play at the wedding!
May 6th, 2008 at 11:23 amDid you tell her as good as you look right now, you are destined to regress to the mean?
May 6th, 2008 at 11:37 amqrgqw3vrweqveqveq
May 6th, 2008 at 11:49 amNot much to add here but I had to say congratulations. On both the proposal and the donations for the marathon. :¬)
May 6th, 2008 at 11:50 amsorry, that was my little kid..
May 6th, 2008 at 11:58 amCongratulations: My wife laughed hysterically when I proposed…..she didn’t think I was serious at first.
Dave: Does this mean you have now affirmatively jinxed at least one thing important in your life?
a) Mariner’s October
May 6th, 2008 at 12:08 pmb) Your wedding day (Replete with gameday on your cellphone)
haha, ok… now tell us what you really did with the money!
May 6th, 2008 at 12:08 pmvr, Xei
Hearty Congrats to both of you, Dave! Have fun !!! Best wishes !!
May 6th, 2008 at 12:26 pmWait…
Are nerds who live on the internet allowed to get married? I thought there was a rule against that.
No, really, congratulations. Though I hope this doesn’t take you awy from the blog.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:34 pmHe could be. Anyone can be ordained online
May 6th, 2008 at 12:37 pmGood show, Dave. Remember to remind your future Mrs. that, when planning the wedding, the best ceremonies often aren’t the $20K-30K blowout ceremonies, but the simple ones, at someone’s home or in a nice space with the two families, music and plenty of food/drink. It’ll save both of you money better spent on a sweet honeymoon.
Looks like you’ll also have a perfect comeback for the usual ‘bloggers live in their moms’ basements’ smack.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:46 pmWay to go Dave!!!
Good luck man!
May 6th, 2008 at 12:50 pmSo I’m thinking we all should chip in and buy Dave a gag gift. Authentic Bobby Ayala jersey?
May 6th, 2008 at 12:57 pmI hear Felix is going to be Dave’s best man. And they will ride out on a chariot of ponies with Boom Boom in the driver’s seat.
Congrats, Dave.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:58 pmI am thinking the authentic Rich Amaral jersey might be even better.
May 6th, 2008 at 1:28 pmCongrats Dave!
May 6th, 2008 at 1:38 pmBloomquist for the gag.
May 6th, 2008 at 1:38 pmCongratulations Dave & Amy. Marriage is awesome. Good luck finding a photographer!!!
May 6th, 2008 at 1:52 pmMan, that would be a fun wedding to go to with Felix and WMFB. I’d love to go (especially if his cousin Josie is going to be there).
May 6th, 2008 at 1:54 pmCongratulations, Dave and Amy. But please schedule the wedding for what would be the date of Game Seven of the World Series, so that the big karma explosion can come our way.
May 6th, 2008 at 1:58 pmCongrats, Dave!
May 6th, 2008 at 3:10 pm87 - How about a Ho-Ram or Silva jersy?
May 6th, 2008 at 3:15 pmI vote for a Doyle jersey.
May 6th, 2008 at 3:22 pmI vote for a Doyle jersey.
OOoohhh, there’s a thought. Have the penguins dressed up in Doyle jerseys instead of tuxes…
May 6th, 2008 at 3:41 pmI vote for a Doyle jersey.
Aye.
May 6th, 2008 at 3:57 pmNo, it’s gotta be a WFB one.
Congratulations, Dave, that’s awesome news. I wish you eighty years of happiness together.
I proposed to my wife in the parking lot of a Macheezmo Mouse, which is the worst I’ve ever heard. And then I married her in Vegas, at the same chapel where The Who got married (I never did find out what that meant; surely bands don’t married to each other?) I’m sure you’ll come up with something better than that.
May 6th, 2008 at 4:34 pmCongratulations, Dave. My wife still likes to tell people I moved up our October wedding one week just in case the M’s made the World Series . . . and the M’s went on to finish 29 games back.
May 6th, 2008 at 5:27 pmCongrats….
May 6th, 2008 at 5:32 pmNow watch them win it all just cause you asked them not to…
Hmm maybe I’m on to something here…
I hope you guys lose tonight against Texas!!
Go *cringe* Texas!!!
LOL! As a renouned wise man once said: “Congratulations, you have my sympathies.”
May 6th, 2008 at 6:02 pmAs another renouned wise man said: I didn’t mean to post that twice.
May 6th, 2008 at 6:07 pmI’m going to start taking people’s clicker fingers if they keep doubleposting.
May 6th, 2008 at 6:19 pmKnow any good wedding photographers?
Congrats!!
May 6th, 2008 at 6:46 pm62, AK:
No, but Alex Diaz is.
May 6th, 2008 at 7:53 pmCongrats!
May 6th, 2008 at 8:33 pmI know a groovy funk/disco band that does wedding occassionaly…
May 7th, 2008 at 2:04 am
