Game 37, White Sox at Mariners

DMZ · May 9, 2008 at 5:44 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Thank goodness that powerhouse Rangers team is out of here. Contreras v Silva, 7:10.

I’m eagerly looking forward to what Baker teased:

McLaren also had some interesting stuff to say about the state of the team — including that he is now putting what he thinks is the best nine out there each day without worrying about hurting anyone’s feelings — and I’ll get to that a little later.

So before he was putting out what he thought was a poor nine because he was worrying about feelings?

Does this mean that he and the team now feel that coming up with a better lineup is more important than having happy players and, presumably, a more harmonious clubhouse?

Who exactly was McLaren coddling, and why?

I hope these questions and more will be answered.

And if I could ask a favor, it would be great if despair didn’t veer into strange vaguely sexist territory tonight. No one’s going to be happy if this all slides into Ban Fest 2008.

That quote was by Bob Condotta, not Geoff Baker.

Vidro is back in the line-up, so no DL to clear a roster spot.

and Clement is catching tonight, apparently

My despair is egalitarian in a 1970s Seattle kind of way.

hmm. the difference between being a bench coach and a manager?

  5. MedicineHat on May 9th, 2008 6:06 pm

    Career Versus Silva:

    Brian Anderson: .500 in 10 AB’s with a homer
    Orlando Cabrera .529 in 17 AB’s with a homer
    Joe Crede: .355 in 31 AB’s with 3 HR
    Jermaine Dye: .350 in 20 AB’s with 2 HR
    Paul Konerko: .263 in 38 AB’s
    AJ Pierzynski: .292 in 24 AB’s with 2 HR
    Nick Swisher: .294 in 17 AB’s with 2 HR

    Juan UribeL .500 in 36 AB’s with 5 HR

Can’t wait to see Mac’s Murderer’s Row lineup tonight.

    OMG Juan Uribe hits someone?

Can’t wait to see Mac’s Murderer’s Row lineup tonight.

Gah, the way these are hitting, Death row would be more like it!

  10. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 6:16 pm

    *these, ah, guys

  11. MedicineHat on May 9th, 2008 6:17 pm

Uribe’s last handful of games played….6/19, 1HR, 3RBI, 3RS. He’s the ultimate in streaky hitters…it’s just that he has 2 or 3 bad streaks for every one good one…lol.

  12. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 6:20 pm

Speaking of which, I wonder if there’s a Ron LeFlore-type prospect on a correctional-league team somewhere who’s about due to be parolled? A guy like that might actually be able to spark the lineup.

  13. Steve Nelson on May 9th, 2008 6:20 pm

Juan Uribe – 5 HR vs Silva???!!!!

  14. MedicineHat on May 9th, 2008 6:24 pm

That wasn’t a typo…here’s the MLB preview page for the game.

  15. joser on May 9th, 2008 6:25 pm

Presumably there won’t be the same level misogyny tonight if an on-field altercation doesn’t cause a spike of brain-killing testosterone poisoning.

Does this mean that he and the team now feel that coming up with a better lineup is more important than having happy players and, presumably, a more harmonious clubhouse?

Man, I hope the bad chemistry doesn’t hurt the offense. If guys are worried about their jobs, they might start pressing and have trouble getting on base or getting clutch hits. On the other hand, maybe they’ll bear down and show some grit.

Okay, now that the cliches are out of the way, let’s PLAY BALL!

  17. Tek Jansen on May 9th, 2008 6:29 pm

msb — where did you see the lineup posted. I thought I read Mac as saying, in one of today’s papers, that Vidro isn’t close to playing a full game. PHing, sure, but not playing all game, even at DH.

  18. MedicineHat on May 9th, 2008 6:29 pm

Did you all catch the Jim Thome Stolen Base last night? Runners on 1st/2nd…batter check’s swing on what plate ump ruled as “ball 4″ with runners on the move. Catcher did not throw down to get the runners. On appeal to first, ump says strike. Batter goes back to bat, but runners keep the bags as stolen bases. He now has 19 SB’s in just under 7000 official AB’s.

That is sad. He just got that 3 year extension and now he cannot show us why.

It’ll be nice to see how Clement handles Silva and runners. Although Chicago has no real speed.

  20. justinh on May 9th, 2008 6:45 pm

McLaren, in fact, started off his pre-game address with something of a state-of-the-team address.

“We’re a good team playing terrible baseball,” he said. “Only we can fix it. The coaches and I have exchanged some ideas and we are working to do some things behind the scenes. You can only shuffle the lineup so many ways and make so many lineup changes. I think now we are at the point where we just have to play a good, solid baseball game and pitch well, get timely hitting, catch the ball and get us a win and go from there.”

    Thanks Mac.

  21. Steve T on May 9th, 2008 6:47 pm

Yeah, sure, Thome’s got 19 stolen bases, but 14 of them came at 2:00 AM, long after the games were over.

  22. Steve T on May 9th, 2008 6:48 pm

    get timely hitting

He is doomed, because he still believes this.

  23. joser on May 9th, 2008 6:49 pm

Did you all catch Dave’s Fangraphs Blog post where he points out the Arizona Diamondback pitchers are outhitting the M’s designated hitter(s)? And now Mac has stopped worrying about making players unhappy. (Where are all those “chemistry” commenters?) We’ve found ourselves in the midst of something epic, folks. Historic. This may be the Black Death of modern era baseball teams, the perfect storm of seasons, the towering “where were you when the Seattle Mariners had that season?” event that will outlive all of us. You are here to witness history, in all its gory-red-in-tooth-and-nail awful majesty.

Or maybe they’ll just climb back to merely mediocre and forgettable.

  24. DMZ on May 9th, 2008 6:52 pm

I’m thinking about going with gin and tonics tonight. Keeping it classy, right?

  25. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 6:54 pm

He now has 19 SB’s in just under 7000 official AB’s.

Compared to Edgar, Bone or Blowers, that would him make a veritable demon on the basepaths.

Okay, now that the cliches are out of the way, let’s PLAY BALL!

Yep, I think from this point out, we can get ‘er done — as long as we can just stay within ourselves and take it one game at a time! :)

  26. DMZ on May 9th, 2008 6:55 pm

Dave rocks. There’s no way around it.

  27. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 6:55 pm

Decent drink choice, Derek…what brand of gin?

  28. Tek Jansen on May 9th, 2008 6:55 pm

Rye whiskey for me. And that’s after I polished off half a bottle of wine, an Australian merlot.

I will find a way to make Chuck Armstrong pay for my eventual liver transplant. You know, that sounds like a greate promotional night.

DMZ- Is going with a growler of my favorite micro brew classy enough?

  30. DMZ on May 9th, 2008 7:00 pm

“Broker’s” — it was on sale at our state’s fine liquor store. Not so bad.

  31. MedicineHat on May 9th, 2008 7:01 pm

None of the starters for either team tonight are hitting .300.

  32. DMZ on May 9th, 2008 7:02 pm

I almost went with the growler of Mac and Jacks, as I happened to be in Redmond today!

  33. jefffrane on May 9th, 2008 7:03 pm

Manhattans, made with Rittenhouse Rye and Vya Sweet Vermouth (and oak aged bitters). Oh, and brandied cherries. Nothing but the best for my despair.

The ‘27 Yankees quiver in fear of this lineup.

And why wouldn’t they? Whatever the M’s have might be contagious.

  38. HamNasty on May 9th, 2008 7:08 pm

Wow, Mike Blowers looks like shit. Is he hungover?

  39. Breadbaker on May 9th, 2008 7:10 pm

The ‘27 Yankees quiver in fear of this lineup.

Of course they do. They’re all dead. I’m not sure Chico’s Bail Bonds would quiver in front of this lineup, though.

It’s not just that Turbo is playing DH. We don’t exactly have a lot of bench options (whatever happened to that Norton guy? He was all right). But why in the “era of hurt feelings” is he batting fifth? Shouldn’t Balentien or Clement be batting fifth, to drive in any of the prior four guys before Sexson hits into a double play?

The M’s have a longstanding habit of acting like there are only certain batting slots that young players can play in. It’s totally stupid.

  40. Russ on May 9th, 2008 7:11 pm

Meh…Widmer Hefe. Safe and readily available. A nicely grilled pork chop, mashed potatoes and asparagus. Washed down with a decent and predicable beer(s).

  41. Tek Jansen on May 9th, 2008 7:11 pm

Of course the ‘27 Yankees would be afraid. They had no helmets. The technology had not been invented. They would be helpless when attacked by a Richie Sexson onslaught.

This catering to women and children isn’t simply a cover mechanism for a steady decrease in the frequency and quality of posts, right?? You wouldn’t do us like Chuck, you just wouldn’t!

Next thing you know you’ll be saying the total number of user posts are down because of the [summer] weather!

Fat Tire and ESB tonight. The guy I gave last night’s tickets to bought me a couple cases as a thank for you sending him to his first bench clearing brawl. Yeeeehhaaaawww!

  43. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 7:12 pm

The offense is so wretched these days, it’d almost make the early-60’s Mets look good.

  44. joser on May 9th, 2008 7:12 pm

So when the M’s meet the Padres in interleague play, they very well could be the worst teams in their respective leagues. How often has that happened? It’ll be like the Bizarro World Series.
    Worst. Baseball. Ever.

  45. msb on May 9th, 2008 7:14 pm

Wilkerson picked up by the Jays.

I’m starting with the semi-pathetic decaf tea, but I have stronger supplies if needed.

SMB- Great choice with Fat Tire, the New Belgium Brewery tour is fantastic.

    9 pitches for Contreras.

    M’s offense, you’re doing a heckuva job.

  50. msb on May 9th, 2008 7:20 pm

so, amazingly, the Sox don’t score in the first, but not so amazingly, neither do the Ms.

The Skinny Dip is way too light for me, but I’m loving all the other ones. Pyramid’s Curveball is pretty good, quite hoppy as I recall but it’s been a while. I am always sad to see the Snow Cap go, too. I am the dude buying the last sixer that’s missing a bottle and is marked down sometime in late April. Yes, that’s me.

I was just going to post: I don’t need a run, I need to see a hit!

And then Beltre did just that. With no outs, no less.

Oh Christ, it’s Weeble at the plate. Steal Beltre, steal! Stay out of the double-play!

  61. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 7:31 pm

My B-day was last week. My wife and son are taking me to see the M’s on Sunday. They had no idea how bad the team is and thought I’d be really happy. I was so embarrassed to be a fan that I didn’t have the heart to tell them the truth.

To top this all off…my son, who is 11, bought the tickets. Being the rightous, moralist that only an 11 year old can muster, he bought tickets in the no alcohol section. If you see a guy on Sunday downing beers AT the beer stands, it just may be me.

Oh man. I picked a bad day to give up doing snuff.

  116. Russ on May 9th, 2008 7:58 pm

    dang!!!!

  117. msb on May 9th, 2008 7:59 pm

I know it from Albert King.

I am trying to see if Clement is getting the signs or if he is calling the game. Anyone seen him look in the dugout?

when he first came up, Mac said he would get to call the game–

  118. Russ on May 9th, 2008 7:59 pm

I picked a bad day to give amphetamines

  119. killer_ewok18 on May 9th, 2008 7:59 pm

I picked a bad year to watch the Mariners.

  120. SpokaneMsFan on May 9th, 2008 7:59 pm

Soooo who’s got a fun drinking game to ease the pain here? One drink whenever Blow complains about the schedule, Niehaus says the wrong name when refering to someone or Sims says pardon me after botching a statement sound like a good start? 2 drinks if we actually score a run! (c’mon announcers I want to get tanked and I know this part isn’t going to happen)

  121. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 7:59 pm

Just to keep things interesting, how about letting Ichiro! pitch the 8th inning?

  122. Russ on May 9th, 2008 8:00 pm

I picked a good day to continue drinking.

  123. Swungonandbelted on May 9th, 2008 8:00 pm

meh, I heard Dave going nuts, ran back into the room, it was a commercial. Desperation is settting in

  124. Russ on May 9th, 2008 8:00 pm

    119 wins. Game over.

  125. IndieSnob on May 9th, 2008 8:00 pm

I know the Mariners are bad when I’d almost rather be studying for my huge Politics of Japan mid-term.

  126. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 8:00 pm

Careful I’m sitting in my bar…

  127. planB on May 9th, 2008 8:01 pm

    Baserunner!

  128. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 8:01 pm

A shot of Cuervo if Ichiro steals here…

  129. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 8:02 pm

    LOL..I just typed that too…
    Okay..cheers everyone!

  130. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 8:02 pm

The M’s could almost inspire one to take up Sominex with Jack Daniels chasers.

  131. Jay R. on May 9th, 2008 8:02 pm

We have a run on 2nd base! Someone call the AP.

  132. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 8:03 pm

    please…. let it happen….

  133. msb on May 9th, 2008 8:03 pm

So when the M’s meet the Padres in interleague play, they very well could be the worst teams in their respective leagues

that degree of suckitude could upset the gravity of the earth.

I better switch over from the decaf.

  134. killer_ewok18 on May 9th, 2008 8:04 pm

    Well, it counts.

  135. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 8:04 pm

    Wow!
    ICHIRO!!!!

  136. Russ on May 9th, 2008 8:04 pm

Damn. There goes that record….for now anyway.

  137. planB on May 9th, 2008 8:04 pm

  138. DMZ on May 9th, 2008 8:04 pm

  145. fishiam on May 9th, 2008 8:06 pm

Any offers as to how long the earned run shut out streak continues? I’m thinking it continues through this game.

  146. planB on May 9th, 2008 8:07 pm

We kinda need more than one run a week to win games, though.

  147. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 8:07 pm

    little victories, right?

  148. Jay R. on May 9th, 2008 8:08 pm

Let us enjoy the moment planB…

    Okay…back down to Earth…

  150. msb on May 9th, 2008 8:08 pm

I’m reading Chris Coste’s book about his lengthy minor-league career before his ML debut at 33 two years ago, and he is very entertaining on learning to catch late as an independent leaguer

  151. SpokaneMsFan on May 9th, 2008 8:09 pm

Man Sims looks genuinely excited about the wild pitch run scored. I guess little victories is right

  152. killer_ewok18 on May 9th, 2008 8:10 pm

    What an ugly hat.

  153. Lucky Number on May 9th, 2008 8:11 pm

I missed it. What IS the record for most innings played without a run?

  154. lailaihei on May 9th, 2008 8:14 pm

Now going for most innings without and RBI…

  155. msb on May 9th, 2008 8:14 pm

  158. Swungonandbelted on May 9th, 2008 8:14 pm

I’m amazed that Turbo got back to 1st

  159. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 8:14 pm

thats a home run in most parks right?

  161. tgf on May 9th, 2008 8:16 pm

“I thought it had a chance to leave the ball park for sure.” (Blowers)

  162. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 8:16 pm

    Richy the near ignitor

  163. planB on May 9th, 2008 8:17 pm

Am I reading baseball-reference right that the Ms are 141/161 RS/RA before this game?

  164. SpokaneMsFan on May 9th, 2008 8:17 pm

And I thought that quote was fitting the first time MSB. Man we could sure use a break.

  165. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 8:18 pm

There have been a tonn of really positive things in this game already. This team looks much better tonight. If not for some questionable base running and some really good defense, we would have a couple of runs by now.

  166. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 8:19 pm

Yeah, I am enjoying this game more than usual…mind you I have had more tequila than usual…

  167. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 8:23 pm

So anytime someone named Jose gets a hit we do a shot of Cuervo..Christ I didn’t think it would be Vidro…

  168. msb on May 9th, 2008 8:30 pm

  170. fishiam on May 9th, 2008 8:33 pm

Does it bugger belief that this Rally Fries schtick is still going on? I remember the moment it started last year and commented at the time that this was a terrible thing that should die a quick death. 100+ plus games later, it lives on?

  171. JMHawkins on May 9th, 2008 8:33 pm

I love the limited-run New Belgiums.

I thought the team’s name was the Seattle Mariners?

  172. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 8:33 pm

    Time for a funk blast!

  178. DMZ on May 9th, 2008 8:38 pm

  190. JMHawkins on May 9th, 2008 8:42 pm

  191. juneau_fan on May 9th, 2008 8:42 pm

But on an up note, my utter loathing for A.J. Pierzynski is being soothed by his many fuck-ups tonight.

  192. brothermatt on May 9th, 2008 8:42 pm

wow. Niehaus just spoke in tongues after Wladdy’s throw.

  194. killer_ewok18 on May 9th, 2008 8:45 pm

Does anyone actually like Pierzynski? I have a feeling even his mother can’t stand him.

  195. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 8:50 pm

I loved that episode of This Week In Baseball when Jennie Finch of the Team USA Womens Softball struck his ass out. :)

  196. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 8:52 pm

I am getting so sick of the booing going on in Seattle. Do the idiots think it helps the team? I’m not saying we should all sit back and enjoy a loosing team, but if you want to protest them, DON’T GO! Seriously, stop giving them money if you are so angry at them.

  197. HamNasty on May 9th, 2008 8:54 pm

Scott19- Speaking of the US womens softball, they got not hit by some pitchers from VT the other day. A walk away form a perfect game, they never got it out of the infield. It was the first time I was excited during a softball game.

  198. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 8:56 pm

Hmm…they managed to get the paid attendance pumped up to 27k+ tonight. I’ll have to look at my schedule to what cheesy little collectible they were giving away to warrant that teeming number.

  199. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 8:56 pm

I saw that game. The girls play so hard and with so much intensity. If it wasn’t for maybe a few more hard hit balls, it would be a great sport to watch.

  200. PaulMolitorCocktail on May 9th, 2008 8:58 pm

Battlestar Galactica is on HD at 9, btw.

  201. Jay R. on May 9th, 2008 8:58 pm

They already spent the money to be there. They are entitled to boo. This is entirely unacceptable baseball.

  202. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 8:59 pm

    Ugh..
    Was that Jose Thome?

  203. JMHawkins on May 9th, 2008 8:59 pm

If we’re going to sign washed up guys, can we sign washed up guys like Jim Thome?

  204. HamNasty on May 9th, 2008 8:59 pm

Then the US womens team dropped 23 on DePaul the next night. Wish we could do that after a shut out.

  205. juneau_fan on May 9th, 2008 9:01 pm

The only problem with Silva’s quick pitching is, it’s the freakin’ 7th inning and now we’re outside of the two run comeback parameters.

  206. killer_ewok18 on May 9th, 2008 9:03 pm

The M’s sure a re breaking a lot of bats. Maybe they’re defective.

  207. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 9:04 pm

How about booing some opposing players? I had fun booing Milton Monday night. He even yelled “shut up!” to a fan near by me after he poped up in the 2nd.

  208. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 9:04 pm

    The M’s or the bats?

  209. HamNasty on May 9th, 2008 9:05 pm

juneau_fan- 2 run comeback parameters? That would require them to score 0 or -1 with our offense.

  210. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 9:05 pm

Ham – Wow…I hadn’t heard about that — though I know they happen on occasion in collegiate & Olympic-level softball. Fast-pitch is a way different game than rec-league…those women who are hitting 65-70 on the gun underhand are throwing the equivalent of a baseball overhand at like 85-90.

  211. Sports on a Schtick on May 9th, 2008 9:06 pm

The M’s offense is like binary code: zeros and ones.

  212. msb on May 9th, 2008 9:10 pm

really think that many people wanted a gym bag?

so, they are still being baffled by the right-handed pitching. Vasquez and Floyd must be looking happily to their starts this weekend.

  213. HamNasty on May 9th, 2008 9:11 pm

Softball link for those who like to read about athletic events instead of watching the M’s flail up at the plate.

  214. JMHawkins on May 9th, 2008 9:11 pm

You have an extra ’s’ in there.

  215. juneau_fan on May 9th, 2008 9:13 pm

See, I wouldn’t be booing A.J. there, I’d be cheering his sucky self.

  216. msb on May 9th, 2008 9:13 pm

  217. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 9:15 pm

Thanks…I knew it was a popular item, but I didn’t think it was that popular.

  218. Paul L on May 9th, 2008 9:15 pm

You know, so far Silva hasn’t been a terrible pickup

  219. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 9:17 pm

Silva is definately the least of our problems..

  220. msb on May 9th, 2008 9:17 pm

    JJ’s up?!

but! but! he pitched just 4 days ago!!!

  221. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 9:18 pm

Anyone else want a hot dog?

  222. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 9:18 pm

216- Other than the fact that the rest of the guys are now suffering from malnurishment.

But yeah, little pricy, but overall, a pretty good pitcher and a good guy.

  223. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 9:18 pm

It wasn’t that Silva was that horrible tonight, but even a quality start where you allow a run or two on this team these days is usually fatal.

  224. Paul L on May 9th, 2008 9:20 pm

Looking at the salaries makes it a bit more questionable I guess.

That’s really a depressing page, if for no other reason than seeing the numbers next to Batista and Washburn.

  225. msb on May 9th, 2008 9:20 pm

well on the plus side, they are getting the agony over much earlier tonight.

Playing the Seattle Mariners — Good For What Ails Ya.

  226. Paul L on May 9th, 2008 9:21 pm

  229. jspektor on May 9th, 2008 9:23 pm

    223-

Actually MSB … it was quite unbelievable how many people left in the 4th inning with their gym bags. They also played that grounds keeper dance and at least some people Boo’ed. These guys are flat out miserable.

Time to bring in the dump trunk and turn that place into a parking lot.

  230. BillyJive on May 9th, 2008 9:24 pm

  232. sealclubber253 on May 9th, 2008 9:26 pm

He is not the same Putz so far. I hate to bring it up, but maybe we could get some good value for him? I’m gonna get it for this one.

  233. Paul L on May 9th, 2008 9:26 pm

Yea, it looks like as soon as he puts a little extra oomph on it he can’t spot.

  234. Paul L on May 9th, 2008 9:26 pm

  235. scott19 on May 9th, 2008 9:27 pm

well on the plus side, they are getting the agony over much earlier tonight.

Yeah, they should get this bout of craptasticness done in plenty of time for me to catch tonight’s episode of Magnum P.I. on RTN.
