Game 37, White Sox at Mariners
Thank goodness that powerhouse Rangers team is out of here. Contreras v Silva, 7:10.
I’m eagerly looking forward to what Baker teased:
McLaren also had some interesting stuff to say about the state of the team — including that he is now putting what he thinks is the best nine out there each day without worrying about hurting anyone’s feelings — and I’ll get to that a little later.
So before he was putting out what he thought was a poor nine because he was worrying about feelings?
Does this mean that he and the team now feel that coming up with a better lineup is more important than having happy players and, presumably, a more harmonious clubhouse?
Who exactly was McLaren coddling, and why?
I hope these questions and more will be answered.
And if I could ask a favor, it would be great if despair didn’t veer into strange vaguely sexist territory tonight. No one’s going to be happy if this all slides into Ban Fest 2008.
LINEUP OF HURT FEELINGS
CF-L Ichiro!
2B-R Lopez
LF-L Ibanez
3B-R Beltre
DH-B Turbo
1B-R Sexson
C-L Clement
RF-R Balentien
SS-R Betancourt
Feelings presumably hurt: Johjima

That quote was by Bob Condotta, not Geoff Baker.
Vidro is back in the line-up, so no DL to clear a roster spot.
and Clement is catching tonight, apparently
My despair is egalitarian in a 1970s Seattle kind of way.
hmm. the difference between being a bench coach and a manager?
Career Versus Silva:
Brian Anderson: .500 in 10 AB’s with a homer
Orlando Cabrera .529 in 17 AB’s with a homer
Joe Crede: .355 in 31 AB’s with 3 HR
Jermaine Dye: .350 in 20 AB’s with 2 HR
Paul Konerko: .263 in 38 AB’s
AJ Pierzynski: .292 in 24 AB’s with 2 HR
Nick Swisher: .294 in 17 AB’s with 2 HR
Jim Thome: .368 in 19 AB’s with 3 HR
Juan UribeL .500 in 36 AB’s with 5 HR
Can’t wait to see Mac’s Murderer’s Row lineup tonight.
OMG Juan Uribe hits someone?
hee hee hee
Gah, the way these are hitting, Death row would be more like it!
*these, ah, guys
Uribe’s last handful of games played….6/19, 1HR, 3RBI, 3RS. He’s the ultimate in streaky hitters…it’s just that he has 2 or 3 bad streaks for every one good one…lol.
Speaking of which, I wonder if there’s a Ron LeFlore-type prospect on a correctional-league team somewhere who’s about due to be parolled? A guy like that might actually be able to spark the lineup.
Juan Uribe – 5 HR vs Silva???!!!!
That wasn’t a typo…here’s the MLB preview page for the game.
Presumably there won’t be the same level misogyny tonight if an on-field altercation doesn’t cause a spike of brain-killing testosterone poisoning.
Man, I hope the bad chemistry doesn’t hurt the offense. If guys are worried about their jobs, they might start pressing and have trouble getting on base or getting clutch hits. On the other hand, maybe they’ll bear down and show some grit.
…
…
…
Okay, now that the cliches are out of the way, let’s PLAY BALL!
msb — where did you see the lineup posted. I thought I read Mac as saying, in one of today’s papers, that Vidro isn’t close to playing a full game. PHing, sure, but not playing all game, even at DH.
Did you all catch the Jim Thome Stolen Base last night? Runners on 1st/2nd…batter check’s swing on what plate ump ruled as “ball 4″ with runners on the move. Catcher did not throw down to get the runners. On appeal to first, ump says strike. Batter goes back to bat, but runners keep the bags as stolen bases. He now has 19 SB’s in just under 7000 official AB’s.
Feelings presumably hurt: Johjima
That is sad. He just got that 3 year extension and now he cannot show us why.
It’ll be nice to see how Clement handles Silva and runners. Although Chicago has no real speed.
“We’re a good team playing terrible baseball,” he said. “Only we can fix it. The coaches and I have exchanged some ideas and we are working to do some things behind the scenes. You can only shuffle the lineup so many ways and make so many lineup changes. I think now we are at the point where we just have to play a good, solid baseball game and pitch well, get timely hitting, catch the ball and get us a win and go from there.”
Thanks Mac.
Yeah, sure, Thome’s got 19 stolen bases, but 14 of them came at 2:00 AM, long after the games were over.
He is doomed, because he still believes this.
Did you all catch Dave’s Fangraphs Blog post where he points out the Arizona Diamondback pitchers are outhitting the M’s designated hitter(s)? And now Mac has stopped worrying about making players unhappy. (Where are all those “chemistry” commenters?) We’ve found ourselves in the midst of something epic, folks. Historic. This may be the Black Death of modern era baseball teams, the perfect storm of seasons, the towering “where were you when the Seattle Mariners had that season?” event that will outlive all of us. You are here to witness history, in all its gory-red-in-tooth-and-nail awful majesty.
Or maybe they’ll just climb back to merely mediocre and forgettable.
I’m thinking about going with gin and tonics tonight. Keeping it classy, right?
Compared to Edgar, Bone or Blowers, that would him make a veritable demon on the basepaths.
Yep, I think from this point out, we can get ‘er done — as long as we can just stay within ourselves and take it one game at a time!
Dave rocks. There’s no way around it.
Decent drink choice, Derek…what brand of gin?
Rye whiskey for me. And that’s after I polished off half a bottle of wine, an Australian merlot.
I will find a way to make Chuck Armstrong pay for my eventual liver transplant. You know, that sounds like a greate promotional night.
DMZ- Is going with a growler of my favorite micro brew classy enough?
“Broker’s” — it was on sale at our state’s fine liquor store. Not so bad.
None of the starters for either team tonight are hitting .300.
I almost went with the growler of Mac and Jacks, as I happened to be in Redmond today!
Manhattans, made with Rittenhouse Rye and Vya Sweet Vermouth (and oak aged bitters). Oh, and brandied cherries. Nothing but the best for my despair.
The ‘27 Yankees quiver in fear of this lineup.
I got a microbrew/restaurant directly across the street so I picked up my fav, Big Horn Porter. As Rachel Ray would say, YUMMMO!
Decided to save myself a little coin tonight by kickin’ it home with some “He`nri’s” Private Reserve.
And why wouldn’t they? Whatever the M’s have might be contagious.
Wow, Mike Blowers looks like shit. Is he hungover?
Of course they do. They’re all dead. I’m not sure Chico’s Bail Bonds would quiver in front of this lineup, though.
It’s not just that Turbo is playing DH. We don’t exactly have a lot of bench options (whatever happened to that Norton guy? He was all right). But why in the “era of hurt feelings” is he batting fifth? Shouldn’t Balentien or Clement be batting fifth, to drive in any of the prior four guys before Sexson hits into a double play?
The M’s have a longstanding habit of acting like there are only certain batting slots that young players can play in. It’s totally stupid.
Meh…Widmer Hefe. Safe and readily available. A nicely grilled pork chop, mashed potatoes and asparagus. Washed down with a decent and predicable beer(s).
Of course the ‘27 Yankees would be afraid. They had no helmets. The technology had not been invented. They would be helpless when attacked by a Richie Sexson onslaught.
This catering to women and children isn’t simply a cover mechanism for a steady decrease in the frequency and quality of posts, right?? You wouldn’t do us like Chuck, you just wouldn’t!
Next thing you know you’ll be saying the total number of user posts are down because of the [summer] weather!
Fat Tire and ESB tonight. The guy I gave last night’s tickets to bought me a couple cases as a thank for you sending him to his first bench clearing brawl. Yeeeehhaaaawww!
The offense is so wretched these days, it’d almost make the early-60’s Mets look good.
So when the M’s meet the Padres in interleague play, they very well could be the worst teams in their respective leagues. How often has that happened? It’ll be like the Bizarro World Series.
Worst. Baseball. Ever.
Wilkerson picked up by the Jays.
I’m starting with the semi-pathetic decaf tea, but I have stronger supplies if needed.
SMB- Great choice with Fat Tire, the New Belgium Brewery tour is fantastic.
That Padres interleague series promises to be deeeeeeep hurting, indeed.
Does anyone else want to root Ichiro! just like Roofio from Peter Pan?
I-CHI-ROOOOOOO!
9 pitches for Contreras.
M’s offense, you’re doing a heckuva job.
Peter Pan has a Roofio?
so, amazingly, the Sox don’t score in the first, but not so amazingly, neither do the Ms.
I love the limited-run New Belgiums. Some of those have been amazing.
Nugget Nectar tonight – so that bitter taste in my mouth is from the hops and not from watching the game.
So the Rays smacked down the Angels and the Rangers are carrying their winning ways home against the A’s. Which of these teams is not playing at its actual talent level?
MSB- Yes, yes he does…
54 posts and only 1 game update.
This.
Let’s focus on what counts for M’s fans.
Alcohol
DMZ- I am a huge fan of the 2 Below, their winter seasonal. YUMMO! Sorry for all the food network references.
The Skinny Dip is way too light for me, but I’m loving all the other ones. Pyramid’s Curveball is pretty good, quite hoppy as I recall but it’s been a while. I am always sad to see the Snow Cap go, too. I am the dude buying the last sixer that’s missing a bottle and is marked down sometime in late April. Yes, that’s me.
What’s this, somebody on base? Surely you jest.
Ham – I like it. I promise to finish off the roooooo of your I-chi if you start it at the next game.
I was just going to post: I don’t need a run, I need to see a hit!
And then Beltre did just that. With no outs, no less.
Oh Christ, it’s Weeble at the plate. Steal Beltre, steal! Stay out of the double-play!
GO BELTRE!!!
I know it was only a single, but still, I’ll take what I can get these days!
I love Beltre. Yeah, it’s a man crush for sure.
So what’s the over/under on whether they can score a run to break their streak … given a runner on third with no outs?
OMG, do we ACTUALLY have a runner at freakin’ third?!
Quick kids…look outside and see if there’s locusts coming!
beck21- I live in Co. Maybe one day I will venture to the great land of no runs in the Northwest and attempt to start my new cheer. Glad to know someone will have my back.
Sweet call juneau_fan!
There is an ominous hum.
This move is totally designed to demoralize the team: If we don’t score… well, the writing is on the wall.
I’m having a fine California Zinfandel. Only the best for our Mariners.
Unleash your anger, Richie.
And Sexson — for the first time in two years — actually gets an ovation as he’s coming to the plate.
Well…knew that was too good to be true.
Great swing by Clement.
NO QUESTION ABOUT IT 7:37!
DRINK!
Let’s not think about what could have happened if Clement had been in Vidro’s spot in the batting order.
My B-day was last week. My wife and son are taking me to see the M’s on Sunday. They had no idea how bad the team is and thought I’d be really happy. I was so embarrassed to be a fan that I didn’t have the heart to tell them the truth.
To top this all off…my son, who is 11, bought the tickets. Being the rightous, moralist that only an 11 year old can muster, he bought tickets in the no alcohol section. If you see a guy on Sunday downing beers AT the beer stands, it just may be me.
As long as this streak continues, Boone’s Farm is good enough for these guys.
The streak that will never end…
the game is about to come on on Sportsnet Pacific here in BC..in HD even!!
I guess I’ll watch….
Go M’s
*sigh*
Must drink away frustration.
24 and counting. I’m actually kinda of excited. A record is a record, right?
24 innings.
well … those betting the under just cashed in big. This is unreal and now something quite fascinating … when will they actually score a run?
Cheers to that!
By the way I watched the Jays game today…
Wilkerson…LOL
Niehaus sounds totally disgusted. “Man on third and they don’t score!”
Somehow it’s sort of funny when these poor guys who have to remain cheerfully homer are driven over the edge.
I think we should all start growing mustaches until the M’s score a run…
Uh oh, Silva killer Uribe’s up.
I dunno…has the devil come by on his Ski-Doo yet?
Russ- I agree, we came this far, right? I can wait 5 more innings.
I was thinking earlier, we still have to win 50 games right? A bunch of organizational fodder wins 50. GO M’s!
He’s probably having awful flashbacks to the 80’s Mariners–sitting in a lonely press box in a nearly-empty Kingdome, trying to give viewers a reason to care.
Born under a bad sign
I been down since I begin to crawl
If it wasn’t for bad luck,
I wouldn’t have no luck at all
Getting two runners to second was really exciting. But, as I have learned, having no expectations leads to no disapointment. Nice to see the hits and stolen base.
85: Kinda like the playoff beards that NHL guys grow around this time of the year…though not quite.
If he is playing for the Angels that goes out, No Question About It.
3rd, sorry.
Niehaus can get away with it too, no question about it. He is the voice of the Mariners and is going into the hall of fame.
I have a pretty nice beard going right now. I’ve been meaning to shave, but if the M’s don’t score again tonight, it may have to wait another day.
I can’t grow a full beard…that’s why I suggested mustaches *grin*
Some of those playoff beards are brutal!
Oh boy..here we go…
That’s Our Silva!
Down 2 runs.
Well, guess that’s game, boys…though I hope I’m wrong.
Well..if memory serves..that’s pretty much game over right?
Anyone else wanna go for beers?
I picked up a bad day to give up smoking.
Game over.
I wish they would prove me wrong.
101… come on. The Ms can easily score 2 runs.*
* in five games
FSN sucks… I am trying to see if Clement is getting the signs or if he is calling the game. Anyone seen him look in the dugout?
LOL is there a good day to quit smoking?
GG Silva.
msb, that was Nazareth, yes? At least I know they did do that song.
Ah…burned again by the blazing speed of Jim Thome!
That is a pretty nifty chest protector Clement is wearing…
Sorry..I’m just trying to stay positive..
I picked a bad day to give up sniffing glue.
–Airplane, the movie
I picked a bad day to give up sniffing glue
Ha, beat you!
Oh man. I picked a bad day to give up doing snuff.
dang!!!!
I know it from Albert King.
when he first came up, Mac said he would get to call the game–
I picked a bad day to give amphetamines
I picked a bad year to watch the Mariners.
Soooo who’s got a fun drinking game to ease the pain here? One drink whenever Blow complains about the schedule, Niehaus says the wrong name when refering to someone or Sims says pardon me after botching a statement sound like a good start? 2 drinks if we actually score a run! (c’mon announcers I want to get tanked and I know this part isn’t going to happen)
Just to keep things interesting, how about letting Ichiro! pitch the 8th inning?
I picked a good day to continue drinking.
meh, I heard Dave going nuts, ran back into the room, it was a commercial. Desperation is settting in
119 wins. Game over.
I know the Mariners are bad when I’d almost rather be studying for my huge Politics of Japan mid-term.
Careful I’m sitting in my bar…
Baserunner!
A shot of Cuervo if Ichiro steals here…
LOL..I just typed that too…
Okay..cheers everyone!
The M’s could almost inspire one to take up Sominex with Jack Daniels chasers.
We have a run on 2nd base! Someone call the AP.
please…. let it happen….
that degree of suckitude could upset the gravity of the earth.
I better switch over from the decaf.
Well, it counts.
Wow!
ICHIRO!!!!
Damn. There goes that record….for now anyway.
Ugh it’s not even on a hit, though…
I love all the fans standing up to give the sarcastic standing ovation.
Hahahahahahahhaha gift from the baseball gods.
Time to shave those mustaches!!
Our long national nightmare is over.
there are times I love AJ.
“Good job not going infinitely long without scoring, team! Way to go!”
OMG, IT’S OOOOOVER!!!!
Any offers as to how long the earned run shut out streak continues? I’m thinking it continues through this game.
We kinda need more than one run a week to win games, though.
little victories, right?
You are now on the short list for the GM job when BB goes bye bye. Congratulations!
Let us enjoy the moment planB…
Okay…back down to Earth…
I’m reading Chris Coste’s book about his lengthy minor-league career before his ML debut at 33 two years ago, and he is very entertaining on learning to catch late as an independent leaguer
Man Sims looks genuinely excited about the wild pitch run scored. I guess little victories is right
What an ugly hat.
I missed it. What IS the record for most innings played without a run?
Now going for most innings without and RBI…
If it wasn’t for bad luck
I wouldn’t have no kinda luck
If it wasn’t for real bad luck
I wouldn’t have no luck at all
Sheesh. Nice catch, ya bastid.
Damn nice catch…
Better get some oxygen for Turbo
I’m amazed that Turbo got back to 1st
I almost had a heart attack right there! What a catch!
thats a home run in most parks right?
“I thought it had a chance to leave the ball park for sure.” (Blowers)
Richy the near ignitor
Am I reading baseball-reference right that the Ms are 141/161 RS/RA before this game?
And I thought that quote was fitting the first time MSB. Man we could sure use a break.
There have been a tonn of really positive things in this game already. This team looks much better tonight. If not for some questionable base running and some really good defense, we would have a couple of runs by now.
Yeah, I am enjoying this game more than usual…mind you I have had more tequila than usual…
So anytime someone named Jose gets a hit we do a shot of Cuervo..Christ I didn’t think it would be Vidro…
does any one actually watch BDSSP?
I bet this is the bat with the hits in it.
Does it bugger belief that this Rally Fries schtick is still going on? I remember the moment it started last year and commented at the time that this was a terrible thing that should die a quick death. 100+ plus games later, it lives on?
I thought the team’s name was the Seattle Mariners?
*raises shot glass*
Cheers everyone!
You’re in trouble Billy, hope you took Chaser!
Another baserunner!
LOL we don’t have Chaser in Canada…
I gotta bartend tonight too…
Oh well…Go M’s
Blowers sounded so desperately desperate there: “Let’s see him [Ibanez] hit one into the seats.”
Time for a funk blast!
Sims’ TSA crack was awesome. Hope you’re on the charter flight for the next road trip, sir, because they’re not known for a sense of humor or ability to take criticism.
…or not…
There’s the Vidro I know and loathe.
Turbo: Preventing DUI’s since 2008
Ichiro scored the last lone run, right? Is this a bad sign?
whats the over under on how many innings before they score again
BALENTIEN HAS AN ARM HELL YES!
Nice throw, Wlad!
did I mention that there are times I love AJ?
Alright Wladdy!
The Curse of the Rally Fries.
Wow!!! I am falling for this guy!
The White Sox are having so much fun when the M’s are at bat they’re in a hurry to get back in the field.
But on an up note, my utter loathing for A.J. Pierzynski is being soothed by his many fuck-ups tonight.
wow. Niehaus just spoke in tongues after Wladdy’s throw.
[generic sports columnist]
Silva isn’t getting any run support.
[/generic sports columnist]
Does anyone actually like Pierzynski? I have a feeling even his mother can’t stand him.
I loved that episode of This Week In Baseball when Jennie Finch of the Team USA Womens Softball struck his ass out.
I am getting so sick of the booing going on in Seattle. Do the idiots think it helps the team? I’m not saying we should all sit back and enjoy a loosing team, but if you want to protest them, DON’T GO! Seriously, stop giving them money if you are so angry at them.
Scott19- Speaking of the US womens softball, they got not hit by some pitchers from VT the other day. A walk away form a perfect game, they never got it out of the infield. It was the first time I was excited during a softball game.
Hmm…they managed to get the paid attendance pumped up to 27k+ tonight. I’ll have to look at my schedule to what cheesy little collectible they were giving away to warrant that teeming number.
I saw that game. The girls play so hard and with so much intensity. If it wasn’t for maybe a few more hard hit balls, it would be a great sport to watch.
Battlestar Galactica is on HD at 9, btw.
They already spent the money to be there. They are entitled to boo. This is entirely unacceptable baseball.
Ugh..
Was that Jose Thome?
If we’re going to sign washed up guys, can we sign washed up guys like Jim Thome?
Then the US womens team dropped 23 on DePaul the next night. Wish we could do that after a shut out.
The only problem with Silva’s quick pitching is, it’s the freakin’ 7th inning and now we’re outside of the two run comeback parameters.
The M’s sure a re breaking a lot of bats. Maybe they’re defective.
How about booing some opposing players? I had fun booing Milton Monday night. He even yelled “shut up!” to a fan near by me after he poped up in the 2nd.
The M’s or the bats?
juneau_fan- 2 run comeback parameters? That would require them to score 0 or -1 with our offense.
Ham – Wow…I hadn’t heard about that — though I know they happen on occasion in collegiate & Olympic-level softball. Fast-pitch is a way different game than rec-league…those women who are hitting 65-70 on the gun underhand are throwing the equivalent of a baseball overhand at like 85-90.
The M’s offense is like binary code: zeros and ones.
really think that many people wanted a gym bag?
so, they are still being baffled by the right-handed pitching. Vasquez and Floyd must be looking happily to their starts this weekend.
Softball link for those who like to read about athletic events instead of watching the M’s flail up at the plate.
You have an extra ’s’ in there.
See, I wouldn’t be booing A.J. there, I’d be cheering his sucky self.
OMG. Steve Kelley is videoblogging
Thanks…I knew it was a popular item, but I didn’t think it was that popular.
You know, so far Silva hasn’t been a terrible pickup
Silva is definately the least of our problems..
JJ’s up?!
but! but! he pitched just 4 days ago!!!
Anyone else want a hot dog?
216- Other than the fact that the rest of the guys are now suffering from malnurishment.
But yeah, little pricy, but overall, a pretty good pitcher and a good guy.
It wasn’t that Silva was that horrible tonight, but even a quality start where you allow a run or two on this team these days is usually fatal.
Looking at the salaries makes it a bit more questionable I guess.
That’s really a depressing page, if for no other reason than seeing the numbers next to Batista and Washburn.
well on the plus side, they are getting the agony over much earlier tonight.
Playing the Seattle Mariners — Good For What Ails Ya.
Seriously, the more I think about it the angrier I get. We’re spending over $19m on two guys. Who suck. And we knew sucked last year.
The Red Hot in Tacoma makes a fine one.
And, of course, you’ve managed to harness transporter technology so that you can beam them directly to us wherever we’re at, correct?
223-
Actually MSB … it was quite unbelievable how many people left in the 4th inning with their gym bags. They also played that grounds keeper dance and at least some people Boo’ed. These guys are flat out miserable.
Time to bring in the dump trunk and turn that place into a parking lot.
Actually I’m not really into hot dogs…..or DH’s that eat a lot of them…
Is it me or is Putz’s (Putz’?) velocity is way down?
He is not the same Putz so far. I hate to bring it up, but maybe we could get some good value for him? I’m gonna get it for this one.
Yea, it looks like as soon as he puts a little extra oomph on it he can’t spot.
Just as Blowers says it looks like he’s getting better command…
Yeah, they should get this bout of craptasticness done in plenty of time for me to catch tonight’s episode of Magnum P.I. on RTN.
Nice command. That went 45ft.
Clement handling Putz well, thats nice to see.
They’re going to lose, aren’t they?
(Which level is acceptance in the stages of grief?)
can someone explain to Sims what color chartreuse is?
Well, the near ignitor didn’t do it.
msb/comment # 214
Thanks for linking to that – it is truly the most god awful thing I have seen on the web since … Britney Spear’s head shaving moment? I don’t know, but that’s what came to mind. I wrote a comment at the Times web site … how can Kelley put such an atrocity on the web? Sad.
That’s enough for me..startin to get busy here…have a good one everyone…
*sigh*
Actually, that’s exactly what the D-Backs did with Jose Valverde. Talk about selling high…the guy had 47 saves last year and gets moved in the off-season!
rally stopper.
Wlad! Got some pop in that swing.
First RBI in… 30 innings?!
An RBI – first one in 30+ innings.
Maybe they will score 3 runs next week!
I wish they’d made JJ go out on a rehab assignment.
Alas, a WLADDY FUNK BLAST — but ’tis still too late!
Hey, tomorrow the last Mariner pitcher to get a win is pitching again! It could be a good Saturday.
So, good things about tonights game…
1. We like alcohol as a group.
2. See 3
3. Nothing.
Hey, at least we scored a couple of runs for a change…
The 2008 Seattle Mariners: Moving glacially up the evolutionary scale!
msb, this is a rehab assignment.
oooh! Henry Darrow is the guest star on Hawaii 5-O!
Check out the leverage the Twinkies imposed on the Red Sox tonight. Papelbon gets a 5.80 LI for a -.791 WPA.
Hey! Kam Fong is the guest star on Magnum PI!
