Game 43, Padres at Mariners
What’s the use of holding out a work-sore hand to catch some when it turns up empty– what? Sorry, I was listening to something while thinking of Wlad. Oh, hey, lineups are out.
Are you ready for BATTLE OF THE WORST TEAMS IN BASEBALL?
Offense:
Seattle: 11/14 in the AL in batting average, 14/14 in OBP, 9/14 in SLG
San Diego: 16/16 in the NL in AVG, 16/16 in OBP, 16/16 in SLG
Pitching with some defense
Seattle: 6/14 in K/9. 10/14 in AVG allowed, 12/14 in OBP allowed, 10/14 in SLG allowed
San Diego: 9/16 in K/9. 6/16 in AVG allowed, 5/16 in OBP allowed, 7/16 in SLG allowed
Defensive efficiency:
Seattle: 28/30. SD: 18/30
I can feel the excitement.
Young versus Batista!
Now watch, just to spite me, this’ll be a thrilling, defense-dominated low-scoring duel with both pitchers going a full nine innings before Ichiro wins the game in the ninth when he singles and then steals three bases on three pitches.
Sexson’s back, yayyy– wait, uhh…
CF-L Ichiro
2B-R Lopez
3B-R Beltre
LF-L Ibanez
1B-R Sexson
DH-L Clement
C-R Johjima
RF-R Balentien
SS-R Betancourt
San Diego fields
CF-L Gerut
2B-R Iguchi
RF-L Giles
1B-L A Gonzalez
DH-B Clark
3B-R Kouzmanoff
SS-R Greene
C-B Bard (both Padres catchers are switch hitters. That doesn’t happen often)
LF-R Hairston

well, pre-game they will be honoring the Central University softballers …. that’s sort of interesting
May 16th, 2008 at 6:24 pmHow are we going to win without Cairo? He’s obviously our most clutch player.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:24 pmWhen McLaren cooked up this lineup casserole he had the sense to hold the Vidro and the Cairo. It’s unimaginative but with the ingredients given this is as tasty as it gets.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:30 pmDon’t worry I’m sure we’ll see Cairo out to pinch-hit at some point…
*sigh*
Go M’s!!! 2 in a row would be nice…
May 16th, 2008 at 6:31 pmCan two in a row be considered a streak? I’d like to think so.
Hey Derek, I haven’t paid much attention to the Padres since I left San Diego last September. Wasn’t Chris Young supposed to be a stud this year?
May 16th, 2008 at 6:33 pmCairo spurred the winning streak.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:34 pmIn the would you trade game I can’t think of another team I would only take 1 player(A Gonzalez), maybe Greene for defense if he isn’t overrated in the field. I would take Bud Black in a heartbeat, if only for the reason that he is not McLaren.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:35 pmI think this deserves a quote from one of my favorite movies “If we win tonight, that’s two in a row. If we win tomorrow, that’s called a winning streak. It has happened before.”
May 16th, 2008 at 6:38 pmThe game is on Sportsnet HD tonight here in BC WooHoo!!!
May 16th, 2008 at 6:39 pmGotta keep the Jagerbombs to a minimum tonight cause I have to work…so…Everytime the M’s hit a home run…I’ll down one…who’s with me?
Young a stud? Yeah, more or less, depending on your definition of stud. The distinction between “really good player” and what might have been expected of him was substantial, but pretty good’s fine.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:40 pmThis tidbit from McLaren, courtesy of Baker’s blog:
Really? Genius stuff there, Mac. Sounds like you have it all planned out.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:42 pmI suppose what they’ve got from him has been fair, considering the lineup they put out there each night.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:45 pmBilly Jive- I have some crazy strong bock micro brew, I will be with you! If thats not good enough I can make some soco/lime shots.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:47 pmI still can’t believe that the M’s roster is constructed so as to have only have three lefty bats in the lineup. Turbo is available to PH, but his back is preventing him from playing the whole game, even at DH or 1B. It is hard to fathom that a supreme athlete like Turbo suffers from those type of physical ailments. And when I say “athlete,” I mean it in the context that competitive eaters also refer to themeselves as “athletes.”
May 16th, 2008 at 6:48 pmSounds like McLaren had a few Jagerbombs before that interview..I always feel way smarter after a few Jagerbombs too…
May 16th, 2008 at 6:49 pmI would go with the SoCo Lime shots….bock micro brew gives you way worse hangovers….
May 16th, 2008 at 6:50 pmIf we played one of DMZ’s favorite games here, “Would you switch for them”, Gonzalez for Sexson is sadly about the only switch I’d make.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:52 pmBillyJive- Fair enough, I think I will change it up a little though. Every outfield assist or double play the M’s turn I will take a shot. I am hoping for fly ball unlucky Beluga Tits.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:55 pmToo bad baseball rules prevent throwing your helmet at a pitched ball instead of swinging a bat.. Richie might have better luck making contact that way.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:58 pmHow about a Dunkelweizen?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:00 pmI’m pretty sure it’d be more fun the other way around. How about taking a shot every time a Mariner hits into a DP?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:03 pm9: Billy Jive - I’m with ya too, bro — though if we all wait on the Mariner HR’s, we should still be sober enough to drive by the end of the evening.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:04 pmIf you like weissbier, you owe it to yourself to find Vitus, from Weihenstephaner. http://tinyurl.com/yn55ux
Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:05 pm21… that sounds about as dangerous as the “fourth year fifth” at my alma mater (seniors trying to drink an entire fifth of alcohol during a football game.)
May 16th, 2008 at 7:05 pmWell like I said I have to work tonight..I figured I was safer to go with HR’s…
May 16th, 2008 at 7:05 pmSentinel- Because Richie is back in the lineup and I am not sure if my roomie will be back in time to rescue me from alcohol poisoning.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:06 pmGah, that could be suicidal.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:07 pmHow about a Dunkelweizen?
These denigrating nicknames for Willie Bloomquist have to stop.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:07 pmHow about you take a shot each time Blowers says “no doubt about it”? (Don’t listen to the pre-game show, you’ll be dead before the first pitch).
May 16th, 2008 at 7:09 pmOkay kids, get ready for the Clash Of The Titans!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:09 pmToo funny!!
Okay if WillieB or FrickenCairo hits a HR we drink triple shots!!!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:13 pmShow us what your made of Beluga Tits… besides blubber.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pmGeez, that took all of 90 seconds or so for Miggy to put the game in grave jeopardy.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pmI Hope Baek is ready to go today.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pmAre you kidding me? 2 pitches and we are out of this game?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:15 pmsigh. the 2008 motto:
The Seattle Mariners.
Good For What Ails Ya.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:15 pmSpeaking of triples…..
May 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pm*sigh*
It’s gonna be a long game…
That didn’t take long.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pmWasn’t Wlad supposed to be a decently good fielder? He looks as slow as Raul out there.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pmF*cking clownshoes.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pmThat was fast.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pmDoes Miguel know this isn’t a throw day and an actual live game?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pmDerek needs to update his “buzz before the game” post.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pmHoly crap, I didn’t know Tony Clark was still alive.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:17 pmOr, what ales ya!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:19 pmI picked the wrong day to quit drinking…
May 16th, 2008 at 7:19 pmsomehow I don’t think that by the end of this series the Padres will still hold the ‘worst offense in baseball’ honor.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:20 pmYou think we have troubles with Vidro as the best DH this team could find?
I was listening to a Padres/Giants game, Tony Clark* came off the bench, got a hit, and was pinch run for by…Greg Maddux.
*What I love about NL games is discovering that all those players you thought were out of the game years ago are actually moldering on benches.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:21 pm*sigh* the game is essentially over and my pizza hasn’t even come yet.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:21 pmAwesome. I’m glad we are well on our to our ‘4 or 5′ six game winning streaks. Good work gents.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:21 pmBean Ball Batista.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:24 pmAnd now Niehaus is getting frustrated.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:24 pm‘For Crying out loud, Batista is all over the place’ - Niehaus.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:24 pmWatching the Mariners is like watching a rerun. You watch it and get a little enjoyment but you know whats going to happen and it is overall just a waste of time.
The 2008 Seattle Mariners- Like watching TV at 3am.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:24 pmThere has been talk of fractiousness in the clubhouse. Is that just a symptom of a losing organization, or are there serious “chemistry” issues? It can’t be that hard to decipher, right? Besides Washburn and Kenji, what the hell is going on here? It seems like there is some real apathy.
LOL–”for cryin’ out loud”
May 16th, 2008 at 7:25 pmBatista, give up a home run so we can go do something else.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:25 pmWow..stellar pitching so far…
May 16th, 2008 at 7:26 pmI hear the M’s were watching Freddy Garcia pitch…wonder if he’ll be anything close to his old self
So Young should be all stiff now. I love it when a plan comes together.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:28 pmOKay how many times in the past few games has the opposing team scored three runs against the Mariners? This seems to happen EVERY game?? Am I wrong here?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:28 pm48: That’s kinda interesting. When he was managing the Tigers years ago, Sparky Anderson used to do the same thing every once in a while with Jack Morris — probably ’cause Jack ran better than a lot of the guys on that team did back then.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:28 pmMaybe one of those college softball players can pitch.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:28 pmLike watching TV at 3am.
Isn’t that about the time that guy with the John Waters pencil mustache gets on and promotes his colonic that is supposed to cleanse the “toxins” from your intestinal tract?
Yeah, this is like that.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:28 pmBaek has pitched or warmed up like 10 games in a row. Shouldn’t he get a rest or bring up Dickey to help him?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:28 pmActually, infomercials or Poker After Dark are both more exciting than this team has been lately.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pmDammit they aren’t showing the game yet because the MINOR LEAGUE HOCKEY game went into overtime….
May 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pmMaybe it’s a sign…
Is it possible for fans to file some sort of suit against ownership for pain inflicted?
I will be glad to show them how much the season tickets have cost me.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pmGarcia may be a good signing if you can get him cheap enough. Plus he’d be great at the Fungo party.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pmI’m so ready for a Fungo party at this point…
May 16th, 2008 at 7:31 pmSpeaking of great college softball players, I wonder if we can activate Angie Mentink to the roster?!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:31 pmwhat the hell is going on here?
What’s going on here is that this team isn’t very good. It’s a badly-assembled collection of mostly mediocre, mostly overpaid parts. Last year they got lucky and played above their true talent level. This year they’re playing a bit below it. But mostly, it’s just a bad team, and we’re getting about what you should expect from that.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:32 pmI’m willing to bet that 90% of the people there only went for the Putz bobblehead.
The other 10% scored cheap tickets and couldn’t pass them up.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:32 pmBloomquist in a FSN/Mariners promo? Oy.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:32 pm65: That isn’t the CHL Memorial Cup Finals by any chance, is it?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:33 pmDid the M’s even bat? That was an all-too-fast half-inning.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:34 pmIs Angie Mentink a LH hitter?
Is it possible for fans to file some sort of suit against ownership for pain inflicted?
If that was possible the Cubs would’ve been bankrupted fifty years ago. And neither Florida team would still be in existence. And actually, the M’s would not have made it out of the 80s.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:34 pmYup…The Rangers just won…so they should switch over to the M’s game…
May 16th, 2008 at 7:34 pm“He is more of a contact guy” Not exactly Blowers, his K/9 is above 8 for his career. But I am really happy you know he holds the ball lightly, cause that is what we need to know.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:35 pmit’s so hard for me to watch batista, honestly he just throws meatballs and looks sweaty
May 16th, 2008 at 7:35 pmUh, barely.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:36 pmWoooooo! Go Padres!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:36 pmGee they switched the game over just in time for that????
*cringe*
May 16th, 2008 at 7:37 pmNo Batista, you’re not throwing batting practice. This game actually counts.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:37 pmOh, lord…when Iguchi goes yard on ya, you know this game is hopeless!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:37 pmBe careful what you wish for…
May 16th, 2008 at 7:38 pm70 - I think classic description, well put
71 - I think your numbers are rightttt on the money.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:38 pmThe M’s don’t deserve my alcohol consumption.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pmAre we now officially free to root for our Hated Rivals for the rest of this game?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pmI don’t think we’ve seen the Mariners all season hit like the Padres have so far. Every hit goes for extra bases, everything hit hard. Batista’s making these guys look like the ‘27 Yankees.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pmMiguel Batista = Gut Teams Alibi
May 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pmSomehow we are making an offense that is close / if not as bad as ours look good.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:41 pm87 -
And she said –
“Tell me are you a Christian child?”
And I said “Ma’am I am tonight” - Marc Cohn
Yes.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:41 pmAh, the comeback begins…Woo-Hoo!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:41 pm91: I’ll betcha half the fans who went to the game tonight wish they were “Walking In Memphis” instead.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:43 pm93 - indeed. Or riding in a Silver Thunderbird.
As an aside, he’s playing at Zoo Tunes this year.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:44 pmSexson really has a way with the bat.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:44 pmRaul? Really? I don’t know what to believe anymore.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:46 pmOMG…RAUUUUL the speed demon?!
Quick, check outside for locusts!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:47 pmSpeaking of softball, I wish it was like coaches pitch and Miguel could pitch to the M’s and Young to the Padres.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:47 pmJeff Clement can not recognize a changeup. It is sad because I love his swing.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:47 pmKENJIIIIII!!!!!
WOO HOOO!!!
Raise your drinks fellas!!!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:48 pm“Kenji will be fine.”
May 16th, 2008 at 7:48 pmPretty funny. Gameday says “Raul Ibanez steals 2nd base.” Ha ha. No, seriously. What happened?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:48 pmKENJI!
Well, there’s that first J-bomb for tonight…
May 16th, 2008 at 7:48 pmCurse you Kenji! You selfishly killed the rally with your homerun!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:49 pmYa know, I was being facetious about that comeback…or so I thought!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:50 pmWhat the hell is going on???
WOO HOO!!! Lovin’ it!!!
May 16th, 2008 at 7:51 pmOMG, A two out Rally !!!
Can the Ichi keep it alive?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:52 pmscott19- this lineup FEASTS on your sarcasm. Except for Vidro, we’ve established where he feasts.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:52 pmSo is Miguel Descartes the Dominican poet done? Will we be blessed with the chance to win?
May 16th, 2008 at 7:52 pm108: Hey Mike, I never thought about it, but the Old Country Buffet could probably get Turbo to do some commercial spots for them.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:56 pmIf Adrian could lay off sliders low and away he would win a batting title.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:57 pm111…and I wouldn’t yell at the TV so much…
May 16th, 2008 at 7:58 pm111… and I wouldn’t be dead inside…
May 16th, 2008 at 7:59 pmWhat was that thing keeping score? And why did we have to see it?
May 16th, 2008 at 8:03 pmPretty much any other left fielder would have gotten that.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:06 pmMel Stottlemyre is crying right now.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:07 pm114 Why is that guy pitching? And why do we have to see it?
May 16th, 2008 at 8:08 pmMaybe we can sign Tanyon Sturtze.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:08 pmStottlemyer: “Bring out the gimp”
May 16th, 2008 at 8:09 pmthere has?
well, as apparently Kenji & Washburn have a fishing trip planned, I am assuming not much, aside from them occasionally not being on the same page about what to throw when …
May 16th, 2008 at 8:10 pmAt this point, I think the gimp would be a better pitcher.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:11 pmoh ok, bobbleheads. I was wondering why there were so many people today. I was scared people were buying into the rivalry.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:12 pm121 -
I think Ichiro could probably pitch better than our #4 and #5 guys, and I’m not kidding.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:13 pm122: Plus, it’s finally, uh, WARM outside for a change.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:14 pmWhy Raul, you are quite frisky on the basepaths today.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:14 pmIchiro quote from 2007
May 16th, 2008 at 8:15 pm124 - True, but M’s/Pads is still a pretty hard sell.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:16 pm117
I was wondering why FSN seems to think that they need to show fans doing random crap at the game, more than well……the game itself. You may have answered that though. I don’t want to see him pitching any more either
May 16th, 2008 at 8:17 pmIn the O’s-Nats game tonight, a guy by the name of Sherrill got his 16th save of the year so far.
Wow…sure glad we didn’t need a guy like that around.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:18 pmwonder what it would be like to have an inning where they catch up to or surge on past the opposing team …
May 16th, 2008 at 8:18 pmjspektor,
Be careful who you say that around, you don’t want the “angry little beaver” coming after you.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:19 pmzzyzx- Are you kidding?! The Fryers make my blood boil! They’re so south and we’re so…north. Ooooh I hate ‘em so much!
May 16th, 2008 at 8:19 pmi despise rally fries.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:19 pm133
I’ll drink to that.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:20 pm129- Your team has to have a lead in order to earn a save. He would be wasted here.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:20 pmwell, it’s not like there are a lot of games to save ’round these parts …
May 16th, 2008 at 8:22 pm128: Although at least we don’t have Bert Blyleven circling everybody’s head with a tracer like the Twins do.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:23 pm135/136: True.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:23 pmYuni swings at every pitch thrown in a ten mile radius of his bat. Doesn’t matter the situation.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:27 pmBard’s so bad, Raul stole a base. I expect at least one from Ichiro whenever he gets on base.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:32 pmAB certainly has some good leather…
May 16th, 2008 at 8:40 pmAdrian Beltre with the circus catch, haha. Nice!!
May 16th, 2008 at 8:40 pm139: Vladdy Guerrero does the same thing.
Wouldn’t it be nice if Yuni made that kind of contact?
May 16th, 2008 at 8:40 pm143 -
Indeed, a nice thought.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:43 pm…I am chilling the Jagermeister…
May 16th, 2008 at 8:45 pmyeah - j- bombs all night tonight. no doubt. at least the city will be poppin off tonight
May 16th, 2008 at 8:46 pmLOL..I should drink one for that anyways…
May 16th, 2008 at 8:46 pmI almost would rather watch on ‘Two Girls One Cup’ … on repeat.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:47 pm(coming back after break)
How can Batista still be pitching?
May 16th, 2008 at 8:49 pm149 because McLaren is managing
May 16th, 2008 at 8:52 pmDoes Yuni have a new look with the socks, or did he change when I was listening to games on the radio?
May 16th, 2008 at 8:58 pmYou know, we’re at a critical point in the game and FSN decides that now is the best time to give out rally fries? It just makes me sick. We want to see the game, not people begging for food.
May 16th, 2008 at 9:01 pm152 - couldn’t agree with you more
149 - It is time for me to go out and get hammered. J-bombs for the jive tribe.
May 16th, 2008 at 9:08 pm120: Replace fractiousness with ‘attitude problems’, I suspect that remedies any misconstuction. Poor diction on my part.
Seriously, a fishing trip? Is my sarcasmdar tango uniform, or is Jarrod seriously going to inspect Kenji’s tackle?
May 16th, 2008 at 9:10 pmWe may have been hosed on that one…
May 16th, 2008 at 9:13 pmjagerbombs for everyone!!!
Yep…think it’s time to go watch the rest of this at the bar.
May 16th, 2008 at 9:16 pmHoly cow some defense…or bad base running, either way, benefit much!
May 16th, 2008 at 9:35 pmBalentien and he switched to the socks somewhere in the Texas series. Last game? And they won, so of course he’ll stick with them.
I always thought he was going to trip over those long pants anyway.
May 16th, 2008 at 9:45 pmThe Wave should be banned.
May 16th, 2008 at 9:48 pmUm Kenji sort of didn’t catch that?
May 16th, 2008 at 10:04 pmWhai… wha?
Shouldn’t you burn your best pinch-runner for the TYING or GO-HEAD runner?
May 16th, 2008 at 10:10 pmJuneau-thanks. I’m a big fan of the socks look, and not a fan of the pants three inches too long.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:10 pmWell, only four walks given up tonight!
May 16th, 2008 at 10:13 pmJesus, how many times can you say it could have been worse? I think I’m already done with that phrase, and it’s only May. I had my hopes pinned on beating Texas and San Diego. Maybe tomorrow…. At least we’ll have the better pitchers the next two days.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
