Game 72, Marlins at Mariners
DMZ · June 18, 2008 at 6:10 pm · Filed Under Mariners
A game thread! Remember those?
Tucker v Dickey. 7:10. I’m sure all the lineup problems will be worked out.
Update: Yup! The worst hitter in the AL has been moved out of the three spot. Problem solved!

I believe you made a error sir. *Marlins*
No he didn’t, look again!
*Gasp* A Sorcerer you are!
Baseball, grammar, and magic. This site has it all!
Hey clement is catching tonight! theres one highlight, but vidro is batting second, so says yahoo.com.
Gameday as well. I don’t even know if Vidro can get one of those watcha call ‘ems. Productive outs. Lopez hitting third, we’ll see how that works out
I worried that Clement’s first game back was with a tricky knuckleballer, but then realized that he has been catching Dickey all season in Tacoma. Hooray for little bits of good news.
Sure hope RA can dial it in tonight. Watching a knuckleballer who is on is really fun- at least when he is on YOUR team. The baffled looks and the shaking of heads on the way back to the dugout are sublime.
Maybe the reason for Dickey’s troubles is he doesn’t have his own personal catcher? Hooray Clement! (Fight on USC!)
I always root for the knuckleballer, but I fear Dickey is just not a very good one.
Scheduling weirdness: The AL West is playing the NL East in interleague this year, so can someone explain why the A’s are playing the Diamondbacks? I know the uneven number of teams in the leagues always makes for some weirdness (like that stretch where the M’s played the Expos a couple of years in a row) but that seems kind of random. Must make the Angels happy.
From now on, every game is huge. With 91 left to play, the M’s just need to go 91-0 the rest of the way to equal the 2001 franchise record for wins. The Mojo is rising!
10- That’s really funny because yesterday, after a few beers and not being exactly mathematically nor research inclined, I wondered if the Mariners could go the rest of the year without losing and match that record. Turns out it is exactly that.
And usually going to the National League and hitting with your pitcher instead of your DH at the plate is seen as a disadvantage, but I bet Felix could put up a better split if he had 4 at bats a game. I think Mariners pitchers vs. Pepe/Vidro is about a coin flip.
How many times does “establish the fastball” have to fail before someone realizes it’s a poor strategy?
Knuckleballers should not establish the fastball.
In other news, I’m high on Hoegaarden and St. Bernardus thanks to the Taphouse!
the knuckleballer already has two strikeouts.
How long is the current Ms crew going to be in charge?
one of the first moves of the new regime to come should be to ban mojo.
Anyone have any reason why Dickey’s LOB% is so low? I would say small sample size, but for his career it’s 67.2%. Interesting note: Silva has the 2nd worst LOB% in the league 61.9%. Is bad defense ever indicative of low LOB%?
18… disagree. Rally fries must go first.
Holy crap Ichiro is stealing bases at a 94% clip? Why is he not running every time he gets on base? Even if it’s a triple?
How does that count as a hit for Vidro? Was he even out of the batters box when Ramirez botched it?
Hanley Ramirez is just an unbelievably bad shortstop. How can the Marlins keep putting up with that?
Two of Bloomquist’s “hits” this series were on ground balls that even Derek Jeter would have gotten to.
Can we please stop asking this … and just trust that Ichiro knows better than us when it’s time to run?
(shakes head sadly)
My tongue was planted so firmly in my cheek when I said that, I almost punctured a hole to the other side of my face.
Well, Clement struck out. Must not be ready for the bigs. Send him back down to Tacoma!
(kidding of coure)
“Funk blast” should be DFA’s long before “Rally Fries OR “Mojo.”
If the Yankees signed Ponson, surely we must be able to dump Washburn on them?
Dickey needs to buy Ichiro! whatever he wants tonight.
Yankees signed Ponson? Man, they are hurting worse than I thought!
Vidro get credited with a hit in the 1st…hand him 45 million dollars to stay for 3 more years!
Should Sexson get a hit scored also as Vidro did?
Did Clement’s eyebrows get smaller? Did he shave them?
…Besides the obvious weirdness of the comment, that is a weird thing to notice.
“Funk blast” should be DFA’s long before “Rally Fries OR “Mojo.”
The Mariners dumping “Funk Blast,” “Mojo,” or even (gulp) the beloved “Rally Fries”? That’s just crazy talk.
Yea, that will help Richie’s trade value…
R.A. apparently believes in “establish the fastball” a little too much, seeing as a knuckleball pitcher has only thrown maybe two dozen knucklers in eighty pitches…
95+ pitches in 21 plate appearances. Wow, talk about patient at-bats.
This team is going to drive viewers to “So You Think You Can Dance”
Marlin batters?
These are the non-Felix pitchers.
Dickey could have given up his own runs just as well, here.
40: Felix/Morrow.
I feel awful for R.A.
I hope he is given one more start.
Taking your grandmother to a Mariners game? That’s disrespectful.
I have to admit: I have a ridiculously angry tirade against the rally fries that’s sat in draft status because every time I think about publishing it it’s a nice grandmother or some soldier back from Iraq and I’m only human.
Sucktasticy?
Sucktasticiosoty?
Sucktooitiveness?
Thatta boy Clement!
Aaaaand Richie DPs.
PMC: she can’t see, they just tell her it’s an A’s game.
I feel so awful for typing that.
If you, uh, if you need anybody to look over that draft for ya I’d be happy to volunteer.
This is the second night in a row that Sexson reacted to the ball being thrown to him at first as if he were afraid of it. Maybe he’s seriously going blind.
Is it possible Jeremy Reed has kinda figured out major league pitching? If so, I think he may have just solved our CF problem…
One of those innings that shows the randomness of BABIP. Two balls hit hard but exactly at the wrong place.
should we send some fraud down there with a good begging sign, to provide you with a proper target?
Hey Reed is pretty good out there in Center.
I wonder if a sign saying “GOT THE MUNCHIES – NEED RALLY FRIES” would get some attention?
I’m glad they let RRS pitch another inning.
I’m surprised that they remembered RRS was in the bullpen, since they seem to forget to call his name for weeks at a time.
I imagine McLaren tells me “get me the guy with the hyphen.”
not “me”, but “Mel”
I imagine McLaren tells me “get me the guy with the hyphen.”
Better than last year when he asked the “the reliever with the color as his last name.”
I think they just picked a random one.
Hey this Uggla guy’s not half bad.
Uggla is good.
when the boos begin to cascade on him again, I think about Richie asking to be traded …
and then I hear Sydney Pollack’s voice in my head, saying “No, no, that’s too limited… nobody in Hollywood wants to work with you either. I can’t even set you up for a commercial. You played a *tomato* for 30 seconds – they went a half a day over schedule because you wouldn’t sit down.”
Well, we won’t see hyphen guy for a couple more weeks.
I’m happy we don’t have to play the Marlins a lot. I look at the size of their payroll and compare it to the M’s and it makes me angry.
RRS’s last outings:
5/26 1.1 IP, 0 R
5/27 .0 IP, 0 R
6/6 1 IP, 0 R
6/7 .2 IP, 0 R
6/13 3.1 IP, 0 R
6/16 1.2 IP, 1 R
I think he is on a weekly rotation.
Here comes a Richie DP.
We really do find ways not to score don’t we? I’m a talent over character guy, but this team has neither. At this point I’d be happy with just one of the two.
Does anyone else find it to be a breath of fresh air that Clement takes pitches? I want to cry for joy when I watch him stand in on those close pitches.
“Do they still think this season can be turned around …”
What do you think, moron?
Holy crap, this is the dumbest Valle monologue ever. As if the Mariners are going to get together and say “yes, we can compete this year with this set of personnel” despite having just fired their hitting coach, their GM, about to release their first baseman, and 200 games under .500.
Ugh.
I have forgotten what it means to have power in your lineup. Remember the baseball of yore where your middle of the lineup is scary for the opponent pitchers? Whom do we have?
I’m a little late on the “what must go first …” but I’m chiming in on the Dancing Grounds Crew but then I guess the grandma’s will stop coming to the games. Just rake the damn field and get outta the way …
What do you think the chances are of any two Mariners hitting back to back home runs at any point in the rest of the season?
I just want to see Clement crush something today. Thats all.
74 – Hmmm… I’ll take the over on that.
Clement has two walks in one game? Witch!
Throw him in the water and see if he floats!
Singles galore! Who hoo! I’m sorry I am so bitter.
Heh. Vidro has two hits in the same game. There’s your witch.
This Vidro performance just extended his axing another 30 games
Two on, so what?
Baker has the crowd’s reaction to Richie coming up to bat in the sixth.
82 – Brutal. But he’s the one laughing all the way to the bank.
So Ryan Tucker…What kind of prospect is he? He’s 21, throws hard, and is starting (albeit for the Marlins)…Is he any good?
An, um, interesting study would be a comparison of actual Mariners run production vs standard run expectancy for all of these situations.
Wow, someone is making a movie about Mariners fans!
Baghead
In the picture that Gameday has, Dan Uggla looks like he’s about to kill someone. I imagine my face looks like that about now.
I know its not scientific but doesn’t it seem like Lopez has no range?
Hi-larious.
Came in late on this one. I wanted to see Dickey start, but my wife and I had to go to childbirth class. Looks like I didn’t miss much.
Wait wait wait.
What did the Marlins just do? They replaced one of their players and moved another one over, but they’re not on offense. Is that legal?
90 – Pfft. Thats National League baseball. That’s not how we roll here.
Are they allowed to do that in an AL park?
Is it singles night?
Another Sexson single. Stunning.
HERE COMES THE BLOOM!!!!
Oh yeah! A sexy singles machine! Thank you Pentland!
What happened to Cairo’s team-improving presence? Did he only have five games worth before he had to be put back in his coffin for a couple weeks of recharging?
Oh, it’s SO ignition time, baby!
What the hell is this?!
Mac doesn’t pinch hit for Bloomquist or Johjima after the lefty leaves the game yesterday, but he does pinch hit today for a worse hitter.
*Rips Hair Out*
DMZ:
I heard Cairo is interviewing for the GM job. He’s that versatile.
I like how McLaren played this so that we now have a righty-righty situation instead of a lefty lefty situation when the lefty was the better hitter. A smart baseball move there.
Just came from the ball park – mixed bag of emotions here.
Mainly: Depression.
It was nice to see Reed play well and it was refreshing to see Clement behind the dish.
This game was like watching paint dry.
edgar for mayor: Amazing how we just can’t start shrugging off the absence of logic, eh?
Grit-tay
Folks, we have ignition……
Well I guess that’s why Mac is the big league manager and I’m the fan. I don’t know why I doubted him.
I totally get to take credit for calling that. Right?
Reed’s BA is .296….not .300, Mr. Valle.
Valle’s used to rounding up batting averages.
“Yeah, baby, I’m a .200 hitter…”
Aye, I haven’t given up my brain just yet.
Not to worry folks, if we get 7 singles in a row next inning we can win this.
109 -
That is hilarious.
Question: Pete O’Brien or Richie Sexson?
Sexson, please DFA ASAP. I can’t look at you any longer.
Someone call up Bucky Jacobsen..I need a reason to keep watching these guys…
*sigh*
Beltre!!
Now we need 8 singles.
What sluggers do with meatballs down the middle.
Atta boy Corky!
Richie Needs to go back to the backstreet boys look.
Valle: “but” as a conjunction draws a contrast.
Correct: “Dave Valle was a horrible hitter but played decent defense”
and not a synonym for “and”
Incorrect: “Dave Valle was a bad catcher but a bad color man on broadcasts.”
Everytime Richie Sexson has a cold sore he plays well…not kidding.
Seattle Mariners 2008
and I wish we had Oscar Gamble
At least Barry didn’t come and wreck the chemistry
I just want to laugh.
*Health up*
And. the apocalypse is now upon us.
Sexson is a bad hitter but plays a bad first base.
I’m pretty sure Vidro singling is a bad thing.
Someone should do a study on the Mariners BMI. Our pitchers, especially. That, and Vidro’s neck-chins.
All the talent lies with the Herpes virus.
WOOT OFF!!!!!
And now back to the crappy game already in progress.
Seattle Mariners: Hindsight (I promise this is the best one).
Sigh
Game’s over, the spec I’ve been working on all day is complete… that’s a day.
This team is ass.
I had surgery yesterday. Less painful than being a mariners fan.
And doctors prescribe painkillers for surgery. I use them for games.
Mmm… painkillers
129: HAH
Hey check out Kruger’s tie. That’s something.
129-Great. Mariners mission statement?
Hey how about a drink every time Bill K says “professional hitter”
Also something: Kruger’s crazy rant about Ibanez, who is a run producer, a professional hitter, and steady, which like all players, he’s really not. Whatever, I’m sure it’s hard to fill that air time.
B-R only wants $65 per year to sponsor Sexson’s page. You have to figure that is a bargain for all the hits it’ll get when he is DFA’s.
Hey but the Angels and Oakland lost today so that is something.
Kruger – Chipper has never been a guy that hits for average. Hmmmm… Career average .310 OPS .956.
That’s great research Billy.
Think he’s been infected by the great knowledge of stats that’s insinuated itself throughout the Mariners’ organization…
Correct: “Dave Valle was a bad catcher but a worse color man on broadcasts.”
Oh, how I’d love to read Derek’s rant on rally fries. Hint, please? Is it Bugs Bunny-esque?
Valle is so bad as a color man that when Kenji is doing it in ten years IN Japanese it will make more sense.
And while I’m here, Cairo starting for Valle is about the only situation where starting Cairo makes sense.
