Game 82, Blue Jays at Mariners

DMZ · June 30, 2008 at 5:10 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

Halladay vs Dickey. 7:10.

It’ll be interesting to see what Riggleman does with his lineup now that they’re back home. The road trip was a mixed bag but overall a decided improvement on McLaren. Here’s hoping Riggleman continues to put out serviceable units on the field..

No clubhouse chemistry forecast yet: you’d think that the San Diego sweep would energize the team and bring everyone together towards a shared purpose, but who can say? Only the experts, the experts tell us, and unfortunately, they’re not talking.

Here’s hoping that Dickey’s knuckleball shuts down Toronto’s anemic offense and that we don’t somehow manage to score negative runs against Halladay.

  2. TumwaterMike on June 30th, 2008 5:17 pm

As Yogi would say–50% of chemistry is 75% overated or something like that. Has anyone heard any news on what’s going on with the signing of the M’s first two picks Josh Fields and Dennis Raben?

  3. dann0 on June 30th, 2008 5:26 pm

Hey, 1st post here. Does anyone know where to find the home starting line-ups as early as possible?
I have heard the KJR guy report it from safeco as early as 4:00, but it’s hit and miss, and honestly I
don’t listen too often this time of day. Thanks in advance for your help

  4. smb on June 30th, 2008 5:28 pm

Should be a nice night for Halladay. I enjoy watching him pitch. Hopefully Riggleman doesn’t just fold with his lineup card.

  5. DMZ on June 30th, 2008 5:36 pm

Hey Danno: couple of ways if you’re looking for internet sources. Look for the PI/Times blogs, which sometimes post the day’s lineups way early.

Then look to the scoreboards of ESPN/Yahoo, which sometimes post ~1h early (and frequently don’t). Then MLB Gameday, usually later than them.

  6. lineshotbasehitleftfield on June 30th, 2008 6:00 pm

    Tonight’s lineup:

    Ichiro! RF
    Lopez 2B
    Ibanez LF
    Beltre 3B
    Reed CF
    Richie 1B
    Clement DH
    Johjima C
    WFB SS

Willie gets credit for a game played yesterday bringing him within 21 of Greg Gross. Batting 9th against Halladay should be a bad match up for him:

079 – Consecutive games without an XBH
150 – Consecutive at bats without an XBH
172 – Consecutive PAs without an XBH
081 – 2008 season ABs with no XBH
096 – 2008 season PAs with no XBH

    Unofficial records:

100 – Consecutive games without an XBH – Greg Gross
223 – Consecutive at bats without an XBH – Jose Valdivielso
266 – Consecutive PAs without an XBH – Larry Lintz
124 – Full season ABs with no XBH – Dwain Anderson
144 – Full season PAs with no XBH – Dwain Anderson

I was looking at Ichiro’s numbers today, and while I knew he’d been stealing more, I hadn’t realized just how much more, and how well. 33 for 35! He’s arguably having his best base-stealing year ever — he went 45 for 47 in 2006, and when he stole 56 in his rookie season he was caught 14 times — and I wonder how many base stealers have had their best year on the bases at the age of 34.

I also noticed that Adam Jones batted .330 and slugged .447 in June, which might explain why there’ve been fewer “Adam Jones sucks” comments recently.

  14. lineshotbasehitleftfield on June 30th, 2008 6:27 pm

Here’s how the starters are against Halladay career:

    Ichiro! 8/30
    Lopez 2/9
    Ibanez 7/26
    Beltre 4/16
    Reed 0/0
    Sexson 3/16, 5Ks (baffled it’s not more)
    Clement 0/0
    Johjima 5/12
    WFB 1/2

    Starters have a 30/111 = .270 BA against Roy.

However, I don’t get why Yuni’s on the bench (4/12, 3 RBI against Halladay). I would you give him a night later in the series against guys he can’t hit (Litsch 0/4, McGowan 1/9).

  15. jzalman on June 30th, 2008 6:27 pm

Yeah, I never got the “Adam Jones Sucks” comments. Clearly, “Adam Jones is young, and needs to adjust to MLB.”

As for that lineup…I mean…yeah, that’s kind of how we should have it. Now if we can get these lineups with Felix or Bedard pitching…holy crap! We could “Win” games.

Good luck Dickey. Doc Halladay’s pretty good.

  16. jzalman on June 30th, 2008 6:29 pm

Maybe Yuni’s benched because with Dickey batting they’re worried about fielding? Is WFB a step up from Yuni 2008? I don’t know.

  17. jzalman on June 30th, 2008 6:29 pm

    Haha, Dickey pitching.

  18. lineshotbasehitleftfield on June 30th, 2008 6:30 pm

I mean I would give Yuni a night off later in the series, although I love watching WFB go for his records. If you can really call them that without smirking.

  19. Vortex on June 30th, 2008 6:37 pm

I don’t get why Yuni’s on the bench

According to Baker’s Blog he’s had a rough dental visit today.

  20. smb on June 30th, 2008 6:49 pm

No Turbo. Sometimes you need a professional hitter on the bench, eh?

  21. Jeff Nye on June 30th, 2008 6:50 pm

I bet he even sits on the bench like a professional.

  22. Wallingfjord on June 30th, 2008 6:55 pm

Yuni out tonight due to… “dental issues”? Perhaps he’s been grinding his teeth too much over the article in the new issue of Vanity Fair where he’s… ahem… “featured.”

Honestly, if Sweet Lou was still here, “dental issues” would be too vague for a columnnist; fans would be saying “what if Lou punched him in the face??”

  23. DMZ on June 30th, 2008 6:55 pm

After each at bat walks back to the bench to sit down like a professional like a professional.

  24. DMZ on June 30th, 2008 6:56 pm

If you told me that the manager had just punched one of the players in the face this season, my reaction wouldn’t be disbelief, it’d be “Which player?”

  25. Wallingfjord on June 30th, 2008 6:58 pm

    Re the lineup tonight:
“A Hope Trap”… nice one, scraps.

That’d be a good movie title, actually.

    Sexson 3/16, 5Ks

Great and Sexson will probably sit against Litsch when he is hitting 3/5 against Litsch.

  28. Go Felix on June 30th, 2008 7:05 pm

A Horacio Ramirez sighting in Baltimore pitching for KC.

  29. cody on June 30th, 2008 7:06 pm

I don’t think anyone will get punched in the face. I do think there is a distinct possibility that Silva will eat one of the smaller members of the team.

  30. naviomelo on June 30th, 2008 7:06 pm

Don’t we all understand that batter-pitcher matchups are meaningless? Are we really making decisions based on 20 AB sample sizes?

  31. BurkeForPres on June 30th, 2008 7:12 pm

30- beat me to it. Never thought I’d see such a batter-pitcher matchup discussion on this forum really.

  37. absolutsyd on June 30th, 2008 7:19 pm

    30 and 31
I could see a batter/pitcher matchup being useful, but really only when you are talking about guys in the same division where they see each other a lot more often. If there are 35-40 ABs, I think you could start making some changes based on that.

  38. niterunner on June 30th, 2008 7:21 pm

Sexson will live down to those matchup averages.

  39. egreenlaw9 on June 30th, 2008 7:21 pm

    No clubhouse chemistry forecast yet

    does this count? from Andriesen:

“The Mariners still have plenty of weaknesses — one glance at the standings makes that perfectly clear — but smiles have returned to the Mariners clubhouse for the first time in months. That’s a start. If only they could play the Padres every day.”

  41. msb on June 30th, 2008 7:25 pm

I was looking at Ichiro’s numbers today, and while I knew he’d been stealing more, I hadn’t realized just how much more, and how well.

if he doesn’t watch out, he’ll meet McLaren’s lofty preseason expectations.

That honor now goes to Roy Corcoran (5′10″, 170lbs)

Slaughter Roy Corcoran would fight like the devil to keep from being engulfed & devoured.

  42. Breadbaker on June 30th, 2008 7:26 pm

Kyle Lohse now 10-2 for the Cardinals. Regardless of the value of “wins” as a measure, how many Mariner pitchers have even pitched in ten victories this year?

  43. absolutsyd on June 30th, 2008 7:30 pm

    42
    I’d guess Putz and Morrow…

  44. msb on June 30th, 2008 7:32 pm

I’ve been entertained by the rumoring that both NY teams might be interested in Raul.

  45. DKJ on June 30th, 2008 7:37 pm

He’s a fine fellow and all, but I want Raul off the big banner next to Ichiro. He just doesn’t belong there.

  46. LA M's Fan on June 30th, 2008 7:39 pm

Is it me or does it sound like there’s about five times as many Blue Jays fans present as Mariners fans? Ichiro’s swing and a miss just got some lusty cheering…

  47. naviomelo on June 30th, 2008 7:40 pm

38 – I hope you see that small sample sizes are useless now.

  48. Go Felix on June 30th, 2008 7:41 pm

  49. JerBear on June 30th, 2008 7:46 pm

Good to hear Niehaus lobbying for more Clement in the lineup – regardless of his avg.

  50. niterunner on June 30th, 2008 7:47 pm

47 – I’ll concede if Lockwood gets another hit in the game, or even goes without a strikeout for the rest of the night.

  51. excalabur on June 30th, 2008 7:48 pm

Forgive me for being an Ontario-based Jays fan that follows the Mariners because of Dave and DMZ, but why is Ichiro! playing so much RF lately?

  52. Breadbaker on June 30th, 2008 7:49 pm

Sims just called Eckstein, who is 33 years old, a kid. I know he looks like a kid, but come on.

  54. Breadbaker on June 30th, 2008 7:50 pm

  123. killer_ewok18 on June 30th, 2008 9:14 pm

120: Um, except, why would ESPN waste that much time on the Mariners/Blue Jays? The most we’ll get is a box score…

  124. msb on June 30th, 2008 9:14 pm

msb wins comment of the day for use of the word “pulchritude”

    ahem.

Pull the trigger Clement. Swing away.

I think Jeff needs to enjoy his enjoyment more.

  125. Go Felix on June 30th, 2008 9:16 pm

    Department of redundancy department.

  126. lineshotbasehitleftfield on June 30th, 2008 9:18 pm

Griffey hit a walkoff bomb. Good for him.

  127. msb on June 30th, 2008 9:19 pm

there you go, a change of images– it’s Jays fans drinking beer.

it could be much worse, they could bring back “Abba.”

how ever did MLB miss that obvious “MammaMia” tie-in opportunity?

  128. msb on June 30th, 2008 9:21 pm

so I’m guessing maybe that the surge of that last road trip wasn’t so much the glory that is Riggleman, but more the sadness that is the cellar of the NL.

  129. msb on June 30th, 2008 9:23 pm

do you have to be A Professional Hitter to ‘hit the ball with authority’?

  130. Go Felix on June 30th, 2008 9:24 pm

There is a special badge you have to carry

  131. HamNasty on June 30th, 2008 9:26 pm

Can you hit the ball with authority 5 times and get a single every time?

  132. niterunner on June 30th, 2008 9:29 pm

112 – It must be due to Roy getting hit on the head, but I’ll concede.

  133. jlc on June 30th, 2008 9:30 pm

    Halladay vs Dickey.

I had no idea there was such a simple way to renew my love of baseball that the Mariners have been sucking dry. Knuckleballs and general pitcher domination. Be better if the Mariners won, but definitely not essential this season.

  134. ManageWA on June 30th, 2008 9:33 pm

131: The better question is what happens to those that don’t swing with authority. Is WFB anarchy with a bat?

  135. HamNasty on June 30th, 2008 9:33 pm

Can’t they just say RRS gets the start? They have to insist “all available bullpen arms” will be used like every other Mariner pitcher throws complete games all the time. They need to put that under all the starters besides Felix.

  136. naviomelo on June 30th, 2008 9:34 pm

What exactly did Willie do on that double play?

  137. AZ Ms Fan on June 30th, 2008 9:36 pm

Anyone watching sportscenter? they just showed highlights of the current playing mariners game and they probably got everyones name wrong that they did a highlight of, it was really sad. called clement, lopez to start it lol.

  138. Mothy on June 30th, 2008 9:37 pm

Ummm… Why did gameday decide to put up a higlight video of Johjima hitting a routine groundball to Eckstein? Has this game really had so little highlights?

  139. Mustard on June 30th, 2008 9:39 pm

Domination by Halladay…a thing of beauty if you are rooting for the Jays.

  140. lineshotbasehitleftfield on June 30th, 2008 9:41 pm

or if he’s on your fantasy team. I’ll take it.

  141. Mustard on June 30th, 2008 9:46 pm

haha, complete game, 4 hitter. For sure.

  142. Mothy on June 30th, 2008 9:46 pm

He is on my fantasy team, but I’m not so happy… But this game went about how I expected. I guess they scored less than I would have thought. And Sexson got two more hits than I thought he would.

  143. north on June 30th, 2008 9:47 pm

133 Agreed. Fabulous game. And between last place teams.

Once again – so much depends on who’s pitching that day.

  144. cody on June 30th, 2008 9:57 pm

Well, at lest we didn’t score negative runs like I was expecting.

  145. jephdood on June 30th, 2008 10:32 pm

Dammit. I wish to hell Sexson would stop getting his occasional crap singles so we can finally release him already. I was sure he and Vidro would be gone as soon as the plane touched back down in Seattle yesterday.

  146. vitalogist on June 30th, 2008 11:58 pm

I’m not letting “The Feed” nickname slip away from RRS… that is too awesome – we have to find a way to use that! Come on guys, what else are we going to do anyway?
