Strangely? Do you really think he’s gonna be gone that quickly?
July 4th, 2008 at 12:23 pmI read somewhere that the M’s were more concerned about including/dumping our waste (Vidro/Sexson/Batista/Washburn) than trying to do a deal for Bedard right now. Every conversation starts with “if you want player X, you need to take one of our high-salaried crap” or something like that. It scares a lot of team because the M’s are paying a lot of money for some fine professional crap right now.
July 4th, 2008 at 12:30 pmWell, it’s not the worst lineup Seattle has thrown out all year….
July 4th, 2008 at 12:32 pmWell, that would be consistent with them not understanding their real problem. The real problem isn’t that they have Sexson/Vidro/Batista/Washburn on the team, it’s that they don’t have anyone better to replace them. Their top priority ought to be getting talent into the organization, not clearing salary.
July 4th, 2008 at 12:43 pmBlowers is 7-for-20 against Rogers? Hit him cleanup!/sarcasm
July 4th, 2008 at 1:20 pmGo Bedard.
And if his personality gets him traded from this sinking ship then more power to him.
July 4th, 2008 at 1:34 pmThe Girl I Left Behind? Huh?
July 4th, 2008 at 1:45 pmI would think that Bedard is more likely to be traded during the off-season. That would give the M’s a better chance to resign him, if that is their desire, or to get better value. It would be exciting to see a Felix/Bedard/Morrow combo as the 1/2/3. Give them a defense behind them, and a team of Bloomquists would score enough to make them winners.
July 4th, 2008 at 1:56 pmThe thing is, if you punt him now, the acquiring team gets him guaranteed this year for a contention run and then a full year next year.
That’s valuable.
Burke now has infinity more doubles than Bloomquist this season.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:01 pmWillie is a brutal bunter.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:02 pmseems like the home plate ump has a …unique … strike zone.
The Girl I left behind me– the song being played as they went to commercial, an old favorite adopted by a number of regiments through the years.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:04 pmI’d also think that at the trade deadline for a team who is looking for that one guy to push them over the top, they are more apt to act a little less rationally, and potentially would give up more to get that little extra piece this year, than to sit back and evaluate what has really been a “meh” season for him during the offseason…
July 4th, 2008 at 2:05 pm10 - But he got another single!
July 4th, 2008 at 2:05 pmWow, the Mariners have jaded me to the extent that one of my moments of true joy this season is watching our third string catcher get a double. Burke’s the kind of Everyman with the grit and scrappiness that I would use if those terms weren’t pejorative.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:07 pmwonder if it is a domino things– teams are waiting to find if Sabathia comes on the market, and then once he is gone, Bedard is the next hot property
July 4th, 2008 at 2:08 pmThe problem I see with trading Bedard before the deadline is that the only thing you can get for him that is valuable will be minor leaguers. Any team that wants him for the stretch drive would be less willing to give up currently valuable major leaguers, since they’ll want to keep that value for the pennant drive.
Of course, now that Bavasi is gone, perhaps we have a better chance of getting some real value in return. The question is, what do you trade him for? The M’s have so many holes to fill…
July 4th, 2008 at 2:08 pmmust… sacrifice… more… flies…
July 4th, 2008 at 2:08 pmI wonder how many teams will be looking for a front-line pitcher this month? The Red Sox seem set, the Rays have pitching galore. It’s hard to see the Angels wanting more pitching. I guess Detroit would be a candidate, but they don’t have much in the minors to offer. The White Sox? Either that, or the NL…
July 4th, 2008 at 2:11 pmAnd a rare Ichiro double play, with Willie out at second…
July 4th, 2008 at 2:13 pmthe new gameday is pretty good btw.
Baker suggests a Milwaukee scout is looking at the Mariners’ lefty pitchers.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:14 pmHas Pudge always made the sign of the cross every time he steps to the plate? I’ve never noticed it before.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:18 pmhaving several holes to fill gives you a better chance on getting 2-3 prospects that would really help you out, instead of trading for one specific position which limits your overall options. You can look at it in terms of best athlete available, rather than what first baseman (or other position) can I pick up.
More important than trading Bedard though, is getting morrow ready to convert to a starter. We used our #1 pick this year on a hot-shot closer, Morrow needs to be moved out of the pen and into the rotation.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:21 pmThe stripped gear in the trade Bedard machine though, is that he’s really putting up a crappy year (and that’s being generous when you consider what he was supposed to be when we acquired him)
July 4th, 2008 at 2:24 pmFor as long as I can remember.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:24 pmI can’t decide if Bedard is the only M who doesn’t have plans for the late afternoon, or, if he has something to get to and is trying to be out of there by the 5th.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:24 pmIf Bedard keeps this up, we will lead the league in piles of highly overpaid crap.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:26 pmUh, who comes close to the M’s now?
July 4th, 2008 at 2:27 pm26. Sad but true.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:28 pmI wonder what the M’s will do after the break when JJ comes back. It really seems a waste of talent to have Morrow setting up in the 8th for a team that’s going to win 60-65 games.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:31 pmand we have a left-handed bat heeeeere, left-handed bat, what do I hear for this fine left-handed bat and upright family man, do I hear pitching, do I hear some pitching here?
July 4th, 2008 at 2:34 pmThe dodgers have a pile of money tied up in players (some for several years) like Schmidt, Sweeny, Jones, Garciapara, that they’re not getting any return out of…. they may not have as many bodies, but there’s a boatload of money in big contracts…
July 4th, 2008 at 2:34 pmWhatever happened to Kenji’s bat? One of the great mysteries of 2008.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:37 pm31-Yeah, unfortunately, the Dodgers are my NL team.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:39 pm33: same here
July 4th, 2008 at 2:40 pmMr. Six Innings is actually giving the M’s an opportunity to win today.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:49 pmSims was mentioning earlier that numbers others have passed along lately– the difference in his pitch counts & innings pitched this year vs last
July 4th, 2008 at 2:53 pmnice, another 5 inning 99 pitch outing and gone day for Bedard…your arm isn’t going to fall off if you pitch the 6th you wuss…
July 4th, 2008 at 2:59 pmI wonder what Satchel Paige would think of Bedard.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:59 pmIf Bedard is traded what is the best deal out there? Would it be a handful of prospects that are a few years out or maybe two near ready guys? It would be interesting if the M’s basically worked out a deal to get back what they lost in the original trade.
July 4th, 2008 at 3:00 pmAt this point I would take two “Adam Jones” type outfielders and call it good.
Bedard hasn’t shown value anywhere close to what it would take to get even a 75% return on whet they gave away…..
July 4th, 2008 at 3:02 pmBTW, why is Carlos Guillen not playing?
July 4th, 2008 at 3:06 pm#40 yeah, that is what I was fearing.
July 4th, 2008 at 3:10 pmthere he is, just for you
July 4th, 2008 at 3:13 pmMaybe Pelekoudas can snag Matt LaPorta away from the Brew Crew
July 4th, 2008 at 3:14 pmThanks, Mr. Leyland.
July 4th, 2008 at 3:16 pm(BTW, he’s the only major league manager with the name of a British automotive conglomerate that’s long gone for good - in Germany it was called “British Elend” = British misery)
If Jamey Wright doesn’t pitch today, then Green takes over the AL lead in appearances, with 43. That’s a lot of appearances. When I’m sitting in my office on the Fourth of July feeling sorry for a guy because he works too much, that’s saying something.
July 4th, 2008 at 3:21 pmFWIW, apparently last year Bedard pitched several starts with his sore oblique, until they put him on the DL for all of September; I gather before he got here had pitched hurt before. I have no idea what that means about this season.
July 4th, 2008 at 3:32 pmI love Brandon Morrow but everytime I see him take the mound I think of Tim Lincecum.
July 4th, 2008 at 3:32 pmBedard to Brew Crew is a fallback for the Brewers. They are rumored to be interested in Sabathia.
As painful as it is to think about last winter’s deal for Bedard, any trade of Bedard now should be judged on its own merits - i.e. a trade that doesn’t bring back the same haul the Ms sent away may still be a good trade in the current context.
July 4th, 2008 at 3:36 pmI’m surprised kenny is still up there, laying his 84 mph fastball right in the zone
July 4th, 2008 at 3:44 pmWell, we won.
For whatever its worth at this point.
July 4th, 2008 at 3:58 pmso any one know what that odd chant was during the last out of the ninth?
July 4th, 2008 at 4:04 pmEverybody Get Up.
There’s a song, there’s a scoreboard sign, there’s instructions telling the fans what to do.
Looks like they’re trying to ween us off of Kernkraft 400.
July 4th, 2008 at 5:37 pmWe won now I have to root for our “natural rivals” the dreaded Padres to win to stay some what even with us as we see who is first to last place.
July 4th, 2008 at 5:50 pmhuh. now, is that something new, or is it just that it’s been so long since I’ve been to a game where Everyone Should Get Up, that I’ve missed it …
July 4th, 2008 at 6:23 pmHarry Canary and Nomar Garciaparrot just showed up at the televised Beavers-Rainiers game. Oh, the pain.
July 4th, 2008 at 7:35 pmIf only Jeff Sullivan were there to defend the fans!
July 4th, 2008 at 9:51 pmPadres won. Yes! Some guy named C Beck went 6 innings gave up 2 hits no ER and struck out 7. Who is that guy?
July 4th, 2008 at 10:01 pmI’m holding out for the return of Mr Blister, the Northwest Burn Foundation mascot.
July 4th, 2008 at 11:04 pmAm I the only one who was pissed to see the new Sports Illustrated cover?
I was happy for the local guy, but pissed that the Mariners passed. Maybe the Padres will out-suck the Mariners and then pass on Strasburg. Doubt it.
July 4th, 2008 at 11:31 pmI swear to God, if I have to protect one more section from another overzealous inflatable mascot…
July 5th, 2008 at 12:50 amI think he was traded for a top prospect, a proven reliever and three good pitching prospects. Oh, wait, no, he was traded for a bag of balls and some used adhesive tape. My bad, I was mixing him up with someone else.
July 5th, 2008 at 3:19 amJuly 5th, 2008 at 4:23 am
I think your first line is the relevant one
July 5th, 2008 at 8:14 amThat SDSU add on the left bar is ominous…
July 5th, 2008 at 9:04 amWe will get Strasburg.
Adam Jones is batting .336 since June 1…..
July 5th, 2008 at 10:05 amI know this may come off as a stupid question, but wouldn’t it be a good idea to hang on to Bedard, since we’re likely to get so little?
Could we some how sign him for an extension. I mean, he does have a pretty good record, and maybe the number of pitches he is able to throw will increase….
Can we just kick Bravsi in the goo goo berries for putting us in this sitiation?
July 5th, 2008 at 1:20 pmThe M’s must hang onto Bedard for he is the Second Ace(tm) behind Felix.
Granted, Bedard is injury prone and doesn’t like to throw past 100 pitches, but he is a Second Ace, as mentioned above.
Thanks Bavasi!
July 5th, 2008 at 2:49 pmFirst off I’m glad to see Dave and DMZ taking a much deserved break (no threads other than games) this weekend after the wild ride that June was.
but wouldn’t it be a good idea to hang on to Bedard, since we’re likely to get so little?
Not sure why you think we’d get so little for him. I don’t think we’ll get Jones, Sherill, and more, but his value seems highest today as it will be. Every team in playoff contention could use a solid starting pitcher and if 2 wins gets you from 50% chance of playoffs to 75% chance, it’s worth paying a big price. Plus you’d get Bedard for another year.
As for an extension, you really want more of Bedard
I don’t see any reason he’d sign a discounted deal with the Mariners and signing him to a Zito-like deal doesn’t help us.
July 5th, 2008 at 3:23 pmJeff at LL bring up some very good points on why we should keep Bedard. Contrary to popular belief, this team doesn’t necessarily have to tear down and go into a 5-year rebuild; it is very possible to retool and contend in ‘09 with the right moves, and Bedard is an important part of that.
July 5th, 2008 at 3:37 pmI’d love to hang onto Bedard because I think people are much more down on him than is justified…
But this team is dying for offense, and I think if there’s an opportunity to get a young impact bat or two for him, you have to go for it.
July 5th, 2008 at 4:18 pmThe end is nigh, Ibanez just threw someone out at home.
July 5th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
