Strangely? Do you really think he’s gonna be gone that quickly?

  2. Spanky on July 4th, 2008 12:30 pm

I read somewhere that the M’s were more concerned about including/dumping our waste (Vidro/Sexson/Batista/Washburn) than trying to do a deal for Bedard right now. Every conversation starts with “if you want player X, you need to take one of our high-salaried crap” or something like that. It scares a lot of team because the M’s are paying a lot of money for some fine professional crap right now.

  3. Sports on a Schtick on July 4th, 2008 12:32 pm

Well, it’s not the worst lineup Seattle has thrown out all year….

  4. JMHawkins on July 4th, 2008 12:43 pm

Well, that would be consistent with them not understanding their real problem. The real problem isn’t that they have Sexson/Vidro/Batista/Washburn on the team, it’s that they don’t have anyone better to replace them. Their top priority ought to be getting talent into the organization, not clearing salary.

Blowers is 7-for-20 against Rogers? Hit him cleanup!/sarcasm

  6. north on July 4th, 2008 1:34 pm

    Go Bedard.

And if his personality gets him traded from this sinking ship then more power to him.

  7. Des71 on July 4th, 2008 1:45 pm

The Girl I Left Behind? Huh?

  8. don52656 on July 4th, 2008 1:56 pm

I would think that Bedard is more likely to be traded during the off-season. That would give the M’s a better chance to resign him, if that is their desire, or to get better value. It would be exciting to see a Felix/Bedard/Morrow combo as the 1/2/3. Give them a defense behind them, and a team of Bloomquists would score enough to make them winners.

  9. DMZ on July 4th, 2008 2:01 pm

The thing is, if you punt him now, the acquiring team gets him guaranteed this year for a contention run and then a full year next year.

    That’s valuable.

Burke now has infinity more doubles than Bloomquist this season.

  10. don52656 on July 4th, 2008 2:02 pm

    Willie is a brutal bunter.

  11. msb on July 4th, 2008 2:04 pm

seems like the home plate ump has a …unique … strike zone.

The Girl I Left Behind? Huh?

The Girl I left behind me– the song being played as they went to commercial, an old favorite adopted by a number of regiments through the years.

  12. Swungonandbelted on July 4th, 2008 2:05 pm

I’d also think that at the trade deadline for a team who is looking for that one guy to push them over the top, they are more apt to act a little less rationally, and potentially would give up more to get that little extra piece this year, than to sit back and evaluate what has really been a “meh” season for him during the offseason…

  13. KaminaAyato on July 4th, 2008 2:05 pm

10 – But he got another single!

  14. jlc on July 4th, 2008 2:07 pm

Wow, the Mariners have jaded me to the extent that one of my moments of true joy this season is watching our third string catcher get a double. Burke’s the kind of Everyman with the grit and scrappiness that I would use if those terms weren’t pejorative.

  15. msb on July 4th, 2008 2:08 pm

wonder if it is a domino things– teams are waiting to find if Sabathia comes on the market, and then once he is gone, Bedard is the next hot property

  16. don52656 on July 4th, 2008 2:08 pm

The problem I see with trading Bedard before the deadline is that the only thing you can get for him that is valuable will be minor leaguers. Any team that wants him for the stretch drive would be less willing to give up currently valuable major leaguers, since they’ll want to keep that value for the pennant drive.

Of course, now that Bavasi is gone, perhaps we have a better chance of getting some real value in return. The question is, what do you trade him for? The M’s have so many holes to fill…

  17. killer_ewok18 on July 4th, 2008 2:08 pm

    must… sacrifice… more… flies…

  18. don52656 on July 4th, 2008 2:11 pm

I wonder how many teams will be looking for a front-line pitcher this month? The Red Sox seem set, the Rays have pitching galore. It’s hard to see the Angels wanting more pitching. I guess Detroit would be a candidate, but they don’t have much in the minors to offer. The White Sox? Either that, or the NL…

  19. vj on July 4th, 2008 2:13 pm

And a rare Ichiro double play, with Willie out at second…
the new gameday is pretty good btw.

  20. jlc on July 4th, 2008 2:14 pm

Baker suggests a Milwaukee scout is looking at the Mariners’ lefty pitchers.

  21. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 4th, 2008 2:18 pm

Has Pudge always made the sign of the cross every time he steps to the plate? I’ve never noticed it before.

  22. Swungonandbelted on July 4th, 2008 2:21 pm

having several holes to fill gives you a better chance on getting 2-3 prospects that would really help you out, instead of trading for one specific position which limits your overall options. You can look at it in terms of best athlete available, rather than what first baseman (or other position) can I pick up.

More important than trading Bedard though, is getting morrow ready to convert to a starter. We used our #1 pick this year on a hot-shot closer, Morrow needs to be moved out of the pen and into the rotation.

  23. Swungonandbelted on July 4th, 2008 2:24 pm

The stripped gear in the trade Bedard machine though, is that he’s really putting up a crappy year (and that’s being generous when you consider what he was supposed to be when we acquired him)

  24. jlc on July 4th, 2008 2:24 pm

Has Pudge always made the sign of the cross every time he steps to the plate?

For as long as I can remember.

  25. msb on July 4th, 2008 2:24 pm

I can’t decide if Bedard is the only M who doesn’t have plans for the late afternoon, or, if he has something to get to and is trying to be out of there by the 5th.

  26. cody on July 4th, 2008 2:26 pm

If Bedard keeps this up, we will lead the league in piles of highly overpaid crap.

  27. jlc on July 4th, 2008 2:27 pm

Uh, who comes close to the M’s now?

  28. Des71 on July 4th, 2008 2:28 pm

    26. Sad but true.

  29. don52656 on July 4th, 2008 2:31 pm

I wonder what the M’s will do after the break when JJ comes back. It really seems a waste of talent to have Morrow setting up in the 8th for a team that’s going to win 60-65 games.

  30. msb on July 4th, 2008 2:34 pm

and we have a left-handed bat heeeeere, left-handed bat, what do I hear for this fine left-handed bat and upright family man, do I hear pitching, do I hear some pitching here?

  31. Swungonandbelted on July 4th, 2008 2:34 pm

The dodgers have a pile of money tied up in players (some for several years) like Schmidt, Sweeny, Jones, Garciapara, that they’re not getting any return out of…. they may not have as many bodies, but there’s a boatload of money in big contracts…

  32. don52656 on July 4th, 2008 2:37 pm

Whatever happened to Kenji’s bat? One of the great mysteries of 2008.

  33. jlc on July 4th, 2008 2:39 pm

31-Yeah, unfortunately, the Dodgers are my NL team. :(

  34. Swungonandbelted on July 4th, 2008 2:40 pm

    33: same here

  35. Des71 on July 4th, 2008 2:49 pm

Mr. Six Innings is actually giving the M’s an opportunity to win today.

  36. msb on July 4th, 2008 2:53 pm

Sims was mentioning earlier that numbers others have passed along lately– the difference in his pitch counts & innings pitched this year vs last

  37. Swungonandbelted on July 4th, 2008 2:59 pm

nice, another 5 inning 99 pitch outing and gone day for Bedard…your arm isn’t going to fall off if you pitch the 6th you wuss…

  38. Des71 on July 4th, 2008 2:59 pm

I wonder what Satchel Paige would think of Bedard.

  39. mark s on July 4th, 2008 3:00 pm

If Bedard is traded what is the best deal out there? Would it be a handful of prospects that are a few years out or maybe two near ready guys? It would be interesting if the M’s basically worked out a deal to get back what they lost in the original trade.
At this point I would take two “Adam Jones” type outfielders and call it good.

  40. Swungonandbelted on July 4th, 2008 3:02 pm

Bedard hasn’t shown value anywhere close to what it would take to get even a 75% return on whet they gave away…..

  41. vj on July 4th, 2008 3:06 pm

BTW, why is Carlos Guillen not playing?

  42. mark s on July 4th, 2008 3:10 pm

#40 yeah, that is what I was fearing.

  43. msb on July 4th, 2008 3:13 pm

BTW, why is Carlos Guillen not playing?

there he is, just for you

  44. abender20 on July 4th, 2008 3:14 pm

Maybe Pelekoudas can snag Matt LaPorta away from the Brew Crew

  45. vj on July 4th, 2008 3:16 pm

    Thanks, Mr. Leyland.
(BTW, he’s the only major league manager with the name of a British automotive conglomerate that’s long gone for good – in Germany it was called “British Elend” = British misery)

  46. isaac on July 4th, 2008 3:21 pm

If Jamey Wright doesn’t pitch today, then Green takes over the AL lead in appearances, with 43. That’s a lot of appearances. When I’m sitting in my office on the Fourth of July feeling sorry for a guy because he works too much, that’s saying something.

  47. msb on July 4th, 2008 3:32 pm

FWIW, apparently last year Bedard pitched several starts with his sore oblique, until they put him on the DL for all of September; I gather before he got here had pitched hurt before. I have no idea what that means about this season.

  48. Des71 on July 4th, 2008 3:32 pm

I love Brandon Morrow but everytime I see him take the mound I think of Tim Lincecum.

  49. north on July 4th, 2008 3:36 pm

Bedard to Brew Crew is a fallback for the Brewers. They are rumored to be interested in Sabathia.

As painful as it is to think about last winter’s deal for Bedard, any trade of Bedard now should be judged on its own merits – i.e. a trade that doesn’t bring back the same haul the Ms sent away may still be a good trade in the current context.

  50. praetor on July 4th, 2008 3:44 pm

I’m surprised kenny is still up there, laying his 84 mph fastball right in the zone

  51. cody on July 4th, 2008 3:58 pm

    Well, we won.

For whatever its worth at this point.

  52. msb on July 4th, 2008 4:04 pm

so any one know what that odd chant was during the last out of the ninth?

  53. pgreyy on July 4th, 2008 5:37 pm

    Everybody Get Up.

There’s a song, there’s a scoreboard sign, there’s instructions telling the fans what to do.

Looks like they’re trying to ween us off of Kernkraft 400.

  54. SequimRealEstate on July 4th, 2008 5:50 pm

We won now I have to root for our “natural rivals” the dreaded Padres to win to stay some what even with us as we see who is first to last place.

  55. msb on July 4th, 2008 6:23 pm

Everybody Get Up. There’s a song, there’s a scoreboard sign, there’s instructions telling the fans what to do.

huh. now, is that something new, or is it just that it’s been so long since I’ve been to a game where Everyone Should Get Up, that I’ve missed it …

  56. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 4th, 2008 7:35 pm

Harry Canary and Nomar Garciaparrot just showed up at the televised Beavers-Rainiers game. Oh, the pain.

  57. DMZ on July 4th, 2008 9:51 pm

If only Jeff Sullivan were there to defend the fans!

  58. SequimRealEstate on July 4th, 2008 10:01 pm

Padres won. Yes! Some guy named C Beck went 6 innings gave up 2 hits no ER and struck out 7. Who is that guy?

  59. msb on July 4th, 2008 11:04 pm

I’m holding out for the return of Mr Blister, the Northwest Burn Foundation mascot.

  60. Joe C on July 4th, 2008 11:31 pm

Am I the only one who was pissed to see the new Sports Illustrated cover?

I was happy for the local guy, but pissed that the Mariners passed. Maybe the Padres will out-suck the Mariners and then pass on Strasburg. Doubt it.

  61. Jeff Sullivan on July 5th, 2008 12:50 am

I swear to God, if I have to protect one more section from another overzealous inflatable mascot…

  62. Breadbaker on July 5th, 2008 3:19 am

Padres won. Yes! Some guy named C Beck went 6 innings gave up 2 hits no ER and struck out 7. Who is that guy?

I think he was traded for a top prospect, a proven reliever and three good pitching prospects. Oh, wait, no, he was traded for a bag of balls and some used adhesive tape. My bad, I was mixing him up with someone else.

  63. terry on July 5th, 2008 4:23 am

The thing is, if you punt him now, the acquiring team gets him guaranteed this year for a contention run and then a full year next year.

    That’s valuable.

It's still early in the trade seaon but perhaps this is a sign that Lee P doesn't have the power to do anything major.

  64. msb on July 5th, 2008 8:14 am

It’s still early in the trade seaon but perhaps this is a sign that Lee P doesn’t have the power to do anything major.

I think your first line is the relevant one

  65. cody on July 5th, 2008 9:04 am

That SDSU add on the left bar is ominous…
    We will get Strasburg.

  66. casualfan7 on July 5th, 2008 10:05 am

Adam Jones is batting .336 since June 1…..

  67. profmac on July 5th, 2008 1:20 pm

I know this may come off as a stupid question, but wouldn’t it be a good idea to hang on to Bedard, since we’re likely to get so little?

Could we some how sign him for an extension. I mean, he does have a pretty good record, and maybe the number of pitches he is able to throw will increase….

Can we just kick Bravsi in the goo goo berries for putting us in this sitiation?

  68. mln on July 5th, 2008 2:49 pm

The M’s must hang onto Bedard for he is the Second Ace(tm) behind Felix.

Granted, Bedard is injury prone and doesn’t like to throw past 100 pitches, but he is a Second Ace, as mentioned above.

    Thanks Bavasi!

  69. Adam S on July 5th, 2008 3:23 pm

First off I’m glad to see Dave and DMZ taking a much deserved break (no threads other than games) this weekend after the wild ride that June was.

but wouldn’t it be a good idea to hang on to Bedard, since we’re likely to get so little?
Not sure why you think we’d get so little for him. I don’t think we’ll get Jones, Sherill, and more, but his value seems highest today as it will be. Every team in playoff contention could use a solid starting pitcher and if 2 wins gets you from 50% chance of playoffs to 75% chance, it’s worth paying a big price. Plus you’d get Bedard for another year.

As for an extension, you really want more of Bedard :) I don’t see any reason he’d sign a discounted deal with the Mariners and signing him to a Zito-like deal doesn’t help us.

  70. Benne on July 5th, 2008 3:37 pm

Jeff at LL bring up some very good points on why we should keep Bedard. Contrary to popular belief, this team doesn’t necessarily have to tear down and go into a 5-year rebuild; it is very possible to retool and contend in ‘09 with the right moves, and Bedard is an important part of that.

  71. Jeff Nye on July 5th, 2008 4:18 pm

I’d love to hang onto Bedard because I think people are much more down on him than is justified…

But this team is dying for offense, and I think if there’s an opportunity to get a young impact bat or two for him, you have to go for it.

  72. smb on July 5th, 2008 8:30 pm

The end is nigh, Ibanez just threw someone out at home.
