The Bus vs. Eveland, 7:05 our time.

I’m watching the Tour de France while I wait for the game to come on. Woooooo!

Pretty normal lineup, Johjima catches, Clement DHs and is protected in the order by Willie Boom-Boom Bloomquist.

Yesterday was a big day for Willie with 6 PAs. Ichiro also landed at #399 on the all time hit list yesterday and is just 2 hits away from Lou Piniella who ended his career with 1705.

163 – Consecutive at bats without an XBH
188 – Consecutive PAs without an XBH

112 – 2008 season PAs with no XBH

    The bus or The bust?

I’m watching the Tour de France while I wait for the game to come on. Woooooo!

    Derek “The Peloton” Zumsteg.

Shannon just had a piece from the clubhouse featuring all the other position players who were put out that they didn’t get to be the one to pitch.

Beltre says he has been trying to get on the mound for years, and he would have been throwing a lot of two-seamers.

unofficially, I think the Clubhouse Chemistry is GOOD today.

  4. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 7th, 2008 7:07 pm

    Willie Bloomquist is selfish.

With the team’s hitting as it is, all we’ve needed is a little bit more power to win a few games. Look at yesterday – it’s not that we didn’t have men on base, it’s that they’ve been left there.

    And why not?

No power bat to knock them in.

It is a well-known fact that hitters trade average for power. You have players who hit for high average but low power – hello, Ichiro! You have players, on the other hand, who hit for high power but don’t have a high batting average – until this year, Richie Sexson.

What this team needs right now is the latter. Sexson isn’t getting it done. Vidro isn’t getting it done.

This team needed a player to step it up. They’d have to sacrifice some of their precious BA, but the team would win more games. Well worth it, right? A player with true grit wouldn’t even need to be asked, they’d just step forward and DO IT, right?

    Except – he isn’t.

Willie Bloomquist, hero of September ‘02, the man who hit 15 doubles just three years ago – the man called the face of the Mariners and a “fan favorite” – has yet to hit a single extra base hit this year.

He has selfishly guarded his precious batting average by trying to hit singles, instead of hitting one out of the park. Maybe his average would go down. Maybe he wouldn’t be padding his stats so much.

But we’d win a few more ballgames.

Well, Willie. Are you going to step it up for the team? Or are you going to continue to be a selfish person who has no place on the Mariners roster?

    —-

Well, what do you think? I bet I could give Jay Mariotti and Bill Plaschke a run for their money!

  5. DMZ on July 7th, 2008 7:16 pm

Cervelo has crappy commercials that make me lust after their bikes. How’s that for marketing? I wonder if I’m just so used to the super-slick commercials I see with every M’s game that their commercials-by-engineers is like a sweet salve.

Or it could be that the product is that good

  6. praetor on July 7th, 2008 7:16 pm

    sick nasty!

  7. absolutsyd on July 7th, 2008 7:17 pm

My girlfriend thinks it’s quite funny that Richie hit a home run and I was unhappy about it.

  8. Steve T on July 7th, 2008 7:17 pm

I think you’ve got it. You’re almost into Steve Kelley territory there.

  9. DMZ on July 7th, 2008 7:17 pm

  10. smb on July 7th, 2008 7:17 pm

    Dynamite Mariotti satire!

  11. vitalogist on July 7th, 2008 7:24 pm

Hang on: I missed the “bus” on Wash’s new nickname. Someone explain please!

  12. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 7:26 pm

    Wait wait wait.

Sexson hits a homerun in the first.
    Washburn has a 1-2-3 inning.

    Welcome to bizarro world.

  13. praetor on July 7th, 2008 7:28 pm

could washburn be making a late career comeback, oh wait, he’s only thirty three and shitee

  14. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 7:28 pm

    WFB loves singles night.

  15. fishiam on July 7th, 2008 7:28 pm

Vitalogist – Some weeks back, Washburn strongly insinuated that he was pitching poorly because he “wasn’t on the same page” as his catcher, Kenji Johjima. In other words, he threw Kenji under the bus to take the blame for sucktasticness.

  16. DMZ on July 7th, 2008 7:30 pm

I seriously can’t believe that Niehaus brought up A-Rod’s divorce… and Blowers moved the conversation away from it.

  17. DMZ on July 7th, 2008 7:31 pm

And then Washburn did it again later, just for good measure.

  18. msb on July 7th, 2008 7:33 pm

my. wander back to the game 20 minutes in, and they have runs on the board?

  19. zvazda on July 7th, 2008 7:34 pm

Does anyone else have mlb gameday audio? Mine isn’t working.

I can’t say I’m unhappy about Richie hitting the home run. Everyone knows he sucks including him… I’m glad he got a homer, because I feel bad for his psyche.

  20. Paul L on July 7th, 2008 7:35 pm

I swear someone yelled “Noonan!” on that infield popup. Did you hear it?

BTW, what is so bad about mentioning the divorce? Just unprofessional, or is there some unwritten thing I missed?

  21. msb on July 7th, 2008 7:35 pm

    Sexson?!

  22. zvazda on July 7th, 2008 7:36 pm

Hmmm… I can get the A’s radio broadcast, but not the M’s.

  23. argh on July 7th, 2008 7:37 pm

Blowers moved the conversation away from it

That the highest paid player in baseball is committing adultery (or entered into “an affair of the heart”) with Madonna is hardly family material. Plus, Blowers can see the flashing “YOU’RE ABOUT TO LOSE YOUR JOB” button on the console and Niehaus can’t.

  24. naviomelo on July 7th, 2008 7:38 pm

19 – The Mariners broadcast is back up now. All of MLB Gameday Audio appeared to be down for the first 1 1/2 innings.

  25. msb on July 7th, 2008 7:40 pm

Blowers moved the conversation away from it

He seems to avoid discussions about players & personal stuff…

  26. Paul L on July 7th, 2008 7:41 pm

@23: I can understand the not family material part I guess, but I don’t know why they’d fire the guy over it.

  27. zvazda on July 7th, 2008 7:41 pm

24 – Thanks. I just retried it and it worked.

  28. msb on July 7th, 2008 7:41 pm

odd there are only about 12 people there to see this game.

  29. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 7th, 2008 7:42 pm

Part of Blowers’ job is to baby-sit Neihaus.

  30. zvazda on July 7th, 2008 7:43 pm

25 – Because if someone outed Blowers and we found out about his crush on Willie… well, it would be Take Me Out all over again.

  31. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 7:44 pm

    Richie wanted 2.

  32. vitalogist on July 7th, 2008 7:48 pm

Thanks guys. I knew about the Johjima saga, just didn’t make the connection. Thats a great nickname- good work.

God, can I just say, I seriously dislike Jarrod Washburn? I mean, what IS to like?

  33. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 7:48 pm

    …………the streak continues.

  34. Paul L on July 7th, 2008 7:51 pm

    Nice leap Willie

    Paul Rodgers, The Voice?

  37. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 7:52 pm

Willie will let other people have doubles.

  38. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 7:53 pm

    Paul L:

I would like to get that instant replay and dub “I believe I can fly” over it.

  39. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 7th, 2008 8:01 pm

Bloomy’s streak is at 87 now, right? (85 before the game, plus 2 so far)?

He’s now tied for third on the all-time list.

  40. msb on July 7th, 2008 8:03 pm

um, some more runs? a little offense? be nice, you know, guys.

  41. msb on July 7th, 2008 8:03 pm

um, some more runs? a little offense? be nice, you know, guys.

well, except for those XBH, Willie.

  42. Paul B on July 7th, 2008 8:05 pm

Too bad the Mariners don’t have a real center fielder on the roster.

  43. absolutsyd on July 7th, 2008 8:06 pm

42 – Um, Reed. Or rather, Ichiro, with Reed at right.

  44. Paul B on July 7th, 2008 8:08 pm

I would like to point out, though, that Clement started at DH against a lefty. And Vidro and Cairo both started the game on the bench.

Maybe there is hope for Riggleman.

Why do I get the feeling, though, that next time the M’s play against a pitcher who Vidro had two hits off of back in 2004, Vidro will be back to hitting cleanup.

  45. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 8:09 pm

    The Prentice, you’re hired!

  46. Paul L on July 7th, 2008 8:09 pm

    I believe I can touch…the top of the wall…maybe…

  47. Paul B on July 7th, 2008 8:09 pm

    43 — I know. I should have labeled it with /sarcasm tags.

  48. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 8:13 pm

    Adrian Beltre loves singles night.

  49. absolutsyd on July 7th, 2008 8:15 pm

  50. Paul B on July 7th, 2008 8:16 pm

    Three hits for Beltre!

  51. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 8:17 pm

That is a great ad behind home plate. :)

  52. Paul B on July 7th, 2008 8:17 pm

OK, then he just did an Adrian and got himself out.

  53. xxtinynickxx on July 7th, 2008 8:18 pm

silly Beltre….sigh we still love you!

  54. msb on July 7th, 2008 8:19 pm

    amazing.

they just keep finding new ways to get out of an inning.

  55. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 8:20 pm

    Kenji, come on.

  56. mearls on July 7th, 2008 8:20 pm

Is there some complex mathematical model we can use to prove that this team is horrible at base running, or is the visual evidence enough?

  57. David* on July 7th, 2008 8:21 pm

Kenji did that on purpose, then called Crap Pitch #3 right down the pipe. Should make for some fun in the post-game.

  58. HamNasty on July 7th, 2008 8:22 pm

Perfect time to tune in, nice meatball Bus.

  59. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 8:22 pm

I think the Fairy Dust has worn off.

  62. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 7th, 2008 8:24 pm

Why don’t they serve Rally Fries at away games?

  63. Go Felix on July 7th, 2008 8:26 pm

    No chance, Ibanez.

  64. Paul L on July 7th, 2008 8:26 pm

@62: I seem to remember them doing that in the past.

  65. msb on July 7th, 2008 8:27 pm

………and waashuburn needs to be pulled!

just who would you replace him with?

  66. Paul L on July 7th, 2008 8:28 pm

…keeping in mind that Burke is not available.

  67. praetor on July 7th, 2008 8:30 pm

    washburn’s still an asshole

  68. Sports on a Schtick on July 7th, 2008 8:38 pm

Hiroki Kuroda of the Dodgers, through six innings, is throwing a… shhhh….

  69. David* on July 7th, 2008 8:40 pm

68 – and against Jorge Campillo of all people…

  70. wcf51 on July 7th, 2008 8:42 pm

Our fastest three players are on base…I think.

  71. wcf51 on July 7th, 2008 8:44 pm

But I guess it didn’t help.

  72. msb on July 7th, 2008 8:47 pm

it’s a wonder there isn’t more manager- strangling-player action in dugouts across America.

  73. Sports on a Schtick on July 7th, 2008 8:48 pm

WHO THE FUCK ON THE BRAVES TRIED TO BUNT?!?!?

  74. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 7th, 2008 8:53 pm

66… why, he only pitched one inning yesterday.

  75. Tom in Edmonds on July 7th, 2008 8:57 pm

Sexson … King of the DP!

  76. Sports on a Schtick on July 7th, 2008 8:58 pm

Bah! Double by Teixeria. Back to the M’s game. Huzzah(???)

  77. jefffrane on July 7th, 2008 9:01 pm

Richie Vidro! Without Turbo in the game, somebody has to screw up any opportunities with a DP.

  78. SequimRealEstate on July 7th, 2008 9:02 pm

San Diego down by 1 in the 7th, Colorado won. Ues we have a chase to regain the cellar.

  79. killer_ewok18 on July 7th, 2008 9:04 pm

Kuroda lost the perfect game because ESPN said he was throwing one.

  80. tgf on July 7th, 2008 9:09 pm

Kuroda lost the perfect game because ESPN said he was throwing one.

Vin Scully was talking about it for innings, as it is his job to do. Good announcers ignore that particular tenet of baseball religion.

  81. DMZ on July 7th, 2008 9:09 pm

    I don’t understand Riggleman’s platooning/pinch-hitting strategies.

  82. NF on July 7th, 2008 9:16 pm

I just turned on the gamecast after not watching the game at all. The first thing I saw was J Vidro hit for Clement. Maybe Clement’s tired from all that hitting yesterday.

  83. naviomelo on July 7th, 2008 9:17 pm

Nice outing for Washburn to go 8 innings for us here. Bullpen needed a rest.

  84. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 7th, 2008 9:20 pm

Yaay! A-Rod’s kids get to suffer through a divorce! Hooray! Break out the champagne!

  85. Lauren, token chick on July 7th, 2008 9:21 pm

Yeah, that was weird and not very nice. But y’all? One of our broadcasters just used “schadenfreude” on the air. That’s got to be a win. Er, a metaphorical win.

  86. zvazda on July 7th, 2008 9:21 pm

    83 –
It just infuriates me that the media will be saying what a trooper and team player he is. But he’s an asshole and he wasn’t pitching well, and he got lucky.

And he’ll probably have some more self-congratulatory comments about how awesome he was and how he could truck through eight innings tonight, but the bullpen couldn’t each just eek out one more inning each.

  87. zvazda on July 7th, 2008 9:25 pm

    Jim:
J-lo – Don’t wriggle us into extra innings here. Swing for the fences. Home run = good. Single = bad.

  88. scott19 on July 7th, 2008 9:39 pm

Yaay! A-Rod’s kids get to suffer through a divorce! Hooray! Break out the champagne!

And Madonna dumped a guy who, ironically, looked a bit like Jack McDowell for him — if the tabloids are accurate, that is!

  89. Mat on July 7th, 2008 9:43 pm

Vin Scully was talking about it for innings, as it is his job to do. Good announcers ignore that particular tenet of baseball religion.

That particular tenet of baseball religion is that no one is supposed to mention the no hitter to the pitcher. So as long as pitchers don’t watch the broadcast of their own game, it’s all good.

  90. joser on July 8th, 2008 12:41 am

That particular tenet of baseball religion is that no one is supposed to mention the no hitter to the pitcher. So as long as pitchers don’t watch the broadcast of their own game, it’s all good.

Right, but if none of us talk about it either, then it’s like we’re actually on the team too. Or so we can pretend.

  91. msb on July 8th, 2008 7:58 am

It just infuriates me that the media will be saying what a trooper and team player he is.

well, he is. It’s one of the few things he seems to have always done, suck it up for the team (in both senses of the phrase)

  92. buckleybats on July 8th, 2008 1:45 pm

If we move to the NL West today we would only be 9 games out! Somebody call Selig and make it happen

  93. scott19 on July 8th, 2008 2:50 pm

That tells ya what a powerhouse division the NL West is these days.
