In last night’s game thread somebody mentioned that Willie traded power for average, but that is just not true. Willie’s .258 average is right about at his career mark. However, he is just 7 away from his career high in walks which is what has raised his OBP to .374.

    The up to date count:

086 – Consecutive games without an XBH
166 – Consecutive at bats without an XBH
192 – Consecutive PAs without an XBH
097 – 2008 season ABs with no XBH
116 – 2008 season PAs with no XBH

    Unofficial records:

100 – Consecutive games without an XBH – Greg Gross
223 – Consecutive at bats without an XBH – Jose Valdivielso
266 – Consecutive PAs without an XBH – Larry Lintz
124 – Full season ABs with no XBH – Dwain Anderson
144 – Full season PAs with no XBH – Dwain Anderson

    51 Ichiro RF
    16 Willie Bloomquist SS
    28 Raul Ibanez LF
    3 Jose Vidro DH
    29 Adrian Beltre 3B
    8 Jeremy Reed CF
    44 Richie Sexson 1B
    9 Jeff Clement C
    13 Miguel Cairo 2B

    YAY! Scrappiness!!!

  3. DEO on July 8th, 2008 6:45 pm

Ichiro! is currently at 92 ABs / 105 PAs with no XBH.

  4. Mothy on July 8th, 2008 6:47 pm

What a terrible terrible lineup. At moments like this I’m glad I’m thousands of miles away in Japan… although even here I’m still getting faint whiffs of the stench of that lineup.

  5. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 7:01 pm

Niehaus comparing Silva to a bump in the road… priceless… (More like a ROADBLOCK)

  6. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 8th, 2008 7:10 pm

#3… more importantly, Ichiro hasn’t had an XBH since he went back to RF. Coincidence? I think not.

  7. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 8th, 2008 7:11 pm

    And the streak continues!

  8. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 7:11 pm

Willie gave that one a ride… my heart skipped.

  9. Paul B on July 8th, 2008 7:13 pm

I don’t think I can watch a game where the M’s start both Vidro and Cairo.

Not to mention Sexson and WFB.

Riggleman was complaining about the game last night, saying the M’s had chances to score more runs early. And then the very next day he throws out this lineup.

  10. mln on July 8th, 2008 7:19 pm

Every time Willie comes up to bat, there is electricity in the air.

You can just feel the crowd anticipation as Willie steps in the batting box. It’s almost like chasing Maris.

    All eyez on Willie.

  11. naviomelo on July 8th, 2008 7:21 pm

Why is Betancourt not playing? If Lopez’s leg hurts, then put Willie in at 2B and leave Yuni at SS. What are our chances of winning with a lineup like this?

  12. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 7:23 pm

    11: Negative?

  13. DMZ on July 8th, 2008 7:23 pm

This is a horrible, horrible lineup.

  14. et_blankenship on July 8th, 2008 7:25 pm

Bloomquist, Vidro and Cairo in the same lineup? I am so excited I had to type that with one hand.

  15. Swungonandbelted on July 8th, 2008 7:32 pm

Silva – do you think you can throw any more meatballs belt high over the middle of the plate?

  16. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 7:33 pm

    Mmm… meatballs…

  17. CaptainPoopy on July 8th, 2008 7:33 pm

    15-

He’s a great pitcher because he’s a pitch-to-contact type of player… he induces ground balls and pop outs. He’s perfect for our horrible infield defense (sans Beltre) and our slow left fielder.

  18. Swungonandbelted on July 8th, 2008 7:36 pm

17 too bad he cant jump more than a couple of inches off the ground, he could snag some of those line drives that keep getting lobbed over his head…..

  19. DMZ on July 8th, 2008 7:37 pm

    RUN MEGAVIDRO RUN

  20. DMZ on July 8th, 2008 7:38 pm

    Good hustle there Megavidro

  21. CaptainPoopy on July 8th, 2008 7:38 pm

I love Megavidro’s power stroke. He’s so awesometastic!

  22. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 7:38 pm

Someone forgot to tell Kurt Suzuki that Sexson is slow.

  23. jefffrane on July 8th, 2008 7:39 pm

Crap. It’s 70F in Oakland and 90F here in Portland. Maybe I should move back and become a huge A’s fan.

    Or not.

I need to burn some incense in front of my SilvaShrine.

  24. CaptainPoopy on July 8th, 2008 7:42 pm

jeffrane – you have a little Buddha incense burner too?

  25. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 7:42 pm

So… 21 pitches through 3 innings for The Duke.

  26. DMZ on July 8th, 2008 7:42 pm

The guy doing the EQC commercials sounds like he’s trying to convince himself that Paul Rodgers is worth seeing but can’t quite believe it.

  27. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 8th, 2008 7:43 pm

jefffrane… careful or Silva will eat it.

  28. buckleybats on July 8th, 2008 7:45 pm

Oh yes the EQC right next to Ill’Eagle fireworks. Priceless!

  30. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 7:48 pm

Hey, at this rate, the game will be over by 9! Just in time for America’s Got Talent!

  31. DMZ on July 8th, 2008 7:50 pm

Or the rebroadcast of this morning’s red-hot Tour de France action.

  32. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 8th, 2008 7:54 pm

Or an all-new episode of “The First 48.”

  33. xxtinynickxx on July 8th, 2008 7:55 pm

i bet silva allows a run for every 50 lbs he weighs………

  34. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 7:56 pm

    Or Knit & Crochet Today!

  35. DAMellen on July 8th, 2008 7:57 pm

    Triunfel homers!

  36. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 7:58 pm

i bet silva allows a run for every 50 lbs he weighs………

There’s no way Silva allows 13 runs.

  37. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 8th, 2008 8:00 pm

There’s no way Silva allows 13 runs.

He gave up 8 runs in 3 innings on May 4. If they had left him in, he easily would have allowed 13.

  38. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 8:03 pm

There goes the no hitter, and my motivation for watching this game…

  39. buckleybats on July 8th, 2008 8:04 pm

Thank goodness the no hitter is gone

  40. MyOhMy on July 8th, 2008 8:06 pm

38- My thoughts exactly, except I’m still watching to see if Ichiro actually takes a pitch tonight

  41. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 8:07 pm

Wait. I can pay 5 bucks to get a haircut without wasting more on a seat. Why would I do that exactly?

  42. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 8th, 2008 8:10 pm

Do they ever have fireworks at McAfee after a game? That would be pretty cool.

  43. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 8:13 pm

Does it bug anyone else that the Vern Fonk song timing is way off??? Ugh.

  44. Steve T on July 8th, 2008 8:15 pm

The timing is only one of innumerable things wrong with the Vern Fonk commercial.

I’m so excited to see if Willie can get to triple digits with his next AB.

  45. SequimRealEstate on July 8th, 2008 8:15 pm

I am going to watch Canadian Idol. There will be more hits there than the M’s will get.

  46. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 8:17 pm

Ichiro is so selfish. He just can’t let Willie have his little sliver of eternal glory.

  47. Tom in Edmonds on July 8th, 2008 8:18 pm

Ichiro 108 – Consecutive at bats without an XBH

  48. Steve T on July 8th, 2008 8:19 pm

    One hundred AB!

  49. killer_ewok18 on July 8th, 2008 8:20 pm

    BABIP!!! BABIP!!!

  50. fishiam on July 8th, 2008 8:22 pm

The tv talking head announcers are displaying and discussing BABIP? What in the name of the Internet and Sabermetrics is going on?

  51. Tom in Edmonds on July 8th, 2008 8:30 pm

Silva 71 pitches through 6, not bad.

Now if we only had some offense…

Oh here come Vidro to lead it off…

Sims sez, boy did he fool Cairo…

  52. skitrex on July 8th, 2008 8:30 pm

It will be interesting how much higher the Oakland pitcher’s era will rise in their new stadium and without the benefit of acres of foul ball territory. They can’t pay $50 million for payroll, but they can fund a $500 million dollar new stadium.

  53. TomC on July 8th, 2008 8:32 pm

Professional hitter Vidro looked real bad swinging at that pitch a foot off the plate. Why is this guy eating our at-bats? Can’t we just let him stay in the clubhouse and eat the buffet instead?

  54. TV Producer on July 8th, 2008 8:35 pm

    49 & 50

    you sound surprised.

  55. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 8th, 2008 8:35 pm

How long until Vidro’s option vests?

  57. Sentinel on July 8th, 2008 8:42 pm

Do they ever have fireworks at McAfee after a game? That would be pretty cool.

Yes. I can’t speak for recently, but I caught a game there two years ago (I know. That’s a long time.) and they had a spectacular fireworks show after the game. So, they have had fireworks before.

  58. brooklynmariners on July 8th, 2008 8:46 pm

willie gets another shot next inning, im starting to tense up already

  59. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 8th, 2008 8:49 pm

Wiki caught and pitched in the same game?

  60. TomC on July 8th, 2008 8:55 pm

Bottom of the ninth – if somebody can just get on then Vidro will be able to disappoint us yet again.

  61. Phightin Phils on July 8th, 2008 8:55 pm

Ha! Just had a random thought: Silva running wind sprints…arms and cylindrical torso flailing…

  62. Go Felix on July 8th, 2008 8:56 pm

    Ouch

  63. AZ Ms Fan on July 8th, 2008 8:56 pm

well at least theres some positive to this game, our bullpen is getting some rest…

  64. Swungonandbelted on July 8th, 2008 8:58 pm

that wasn’t an XBH there willie boom-boom…..

  65. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 8th, 2008 9:00 pm

Was this the shortest game of the year? I don’t remember anything under two hours.

  66. Breadbaker on July 8th, 2008 9:01 pm

One thing about this game: it was over before 9.

  67. TomC on July 8th, 2008 9:01 pm

That was just a pathetic performance by the Mariner’s hitters. Sad and pathetic. Duchscherer is good but not that good.

  68. Steve T on July 8th, 2008 9:07 pm

I’m starting to think our baseball team is kind of crappy.

  69. sbaxamusa on July 8th, 2008 9:19 pm

Do they ever have fireworks at McAfee after a game? That would be pretty cool.

Yes, and in years past the fireworks shows would always seem to coincide with one of Mark Mulder’s ultra-efficient complete games. If I’m not mistaken, this game was on fireworks night, but the 1:49 game time meant that it wasn’t dark enough to do the show directly after the game. They actually had to wait a half hour or forty-five minutes after the game ended to do the show!

  70. Dave Hall on July 8th, 2008 9:59 pm

In regard to the (way) earlier question about Yuni not starting tonight (11), I got the impression from Shannon’s blog yesterday that Betancourt is in the doghouse, and this might be a form of “correction”. Maybe until he learns to swing so clumsily that his batting helmet slips down over his face, ala Turbo…

  71. Steve T on July 8th, 2008 11:19 pm

That sounds right. It’s never been the Mariners Way to punish the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, or ninth thing wrong with this club.

  72. Steve T on July 8th, 2008 11:38 pm

If Willie makes it to one of these hallowed records, I’m going to open one of my SP Lagers to toast him. I’ll probably pour it down the drain shortly after, but the honor is still there.
