Game 95, Mariners at Royals
DMZ · July 12, 2008 at 1:10 pm · Filed Under Mariners
The Bus vs Gil Meche.
Of the two, Meche is being paid about $2m more for this season
Meche 08: 6.9 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 1 HR/9
Washburn 08: 5.6 K/9, 2.7 BB/9, 1.1 HR/9
Make of that what you will.
Tug Hulett starts at DH. Nothing against Tug, but… yea, that’s the season in a nutshell.

Thread is up a bit early. Did you want to give us plenty of time to realize what we’re about to see and get drunk?
I suspect that, looking at this matchup — and in light of the absurd M’s lineup — DMZ is already so drunk no longer knows what time it is. Or perhaps he did this as his last sane and sober act before losing himself in a vat of ersatz SP lager.
Or maybe it’s a nice day and he didn’t want to end it on a sour note by watching this game, so he put up the game thread and then went off to ride his bike or celebrate SubPop’s 20th (it’s at Marymoor, they have a velodrome — hey, he can do both!)
I saw a promo for that, it looks like it will be pretty good. I saw Blues Traveler, Live, and Collective Soul there on Wednesday, and that was pretty badass. The nice thing about concerts in comparison with the M’s is that at least your favorite band doesn’t habitually lose. If the M’s were my favorite band and played concerts instead of baseball, I expect they would take the stage two hours late and shit-drunk. Good times.
And they’d only play covers, with none of their own music but obscure B-sides.
Just once, can we please see a lineup like this:
1 Ichiro
2 Lopez
3 Ibanez
4 Beltre
5 Reed
6 Betancourt
7 Clement
8 Johjima
9 Vidro
Just once?
I’d rather see a line-up with no Vidro…
Ha ha, you have to bat your DH 9th!
Oh wait, that’s my team too.
Baker is over on his blog making fun of Hulett– starting at DH tonight– for being 5′8″. Class act.
Oh, and Vidro is playing first.
In actual news, our DH is batting 8th today. But don’t celebrate; Vidro is playing 1B and Tug is going in as the DH. (Via Baker).
It’s nice to see some kids out there, but this lineup really is even more pathetic without Sexson.
D’oh!
I suppose the bright side is that the only two positions we have nobody to play at are DH and 1B. Those should be the easiest positions to find a replacement at.
I will be at this one. Not sure why…
Anyways, if your watching it on TV, look for the only idiot stupid enough to still be wearing an M’s cap and t-shirt, that would be me….
That lineup really makes me miss say… 1997 (OBP and OPS)
Dan Wilson C 146 .326 .749
Paul Sorrento 1B 146 .345 .859
Joey Cora 2B 149 .359 .800
Russ Davis 3B 119 .317 .805
Alex Rodriguez SS 141 .350 .846
Ken Griffey, Jr. OF 157 .382 1.028
Jay Buhner OF 157 .383 .889
Edgar Martinez DH 155 .456 1.009
When I tried to compare to this year’s version I recieved the following error, “Selected team did not play in the 2008 season” — no kidding!
12 - I am so used to the weak hitting Mariners of today, its hard to imagine a whole lineup without an OPS under .700 and a DH with an OPS over 1.000, since our “Edgar Clone” has an OPS of under .600.
Does anyone know what kind of defensive player Hulett is? I can’t imagine he has less range than Lopez, so why not have Lopez as the DH?
Hope the Royals lineup is loaded with RH hitters. I can’t imagine having Lopez and Vidro on the right side of the infield…has there been a 1B/2B combo with less range?
Nice to see Clement benched against a RHP. Vidro batting cleanup again. That’ll build his confidence.
Oh well, at least Clement will still be here long after Riggleman is gone.
I can hear Geoff Baker now. What’s their ERAs? haha
Mariners lineup and OPS vs. RHP:
1. Suzuki (.748)
2. Lopez (.716)
3. Ibanez (.754)
4. Vidro (.584)
5. Beltre (.700)
6. Reed (.690)
7. Johjima (.568)
8. Hulett (?)
9. Betancourt (.660)
On the bench: Burke (.358), Clement (.585), Bloomquist (.493), Cairo (.574)
Woof.
This is BS… everyone is making fun of Hulett for being 5′8″… but no one ever seems to mention how Silva and Vidro who each weigh more than a baby elephant.
Maybe Hulett is a clone of Dustin Pedroia (who hacks mercilessly even though he’s about Freddy Patek’s size — but he makes contact an awful lot, too).
Current Strasburg Standings as of 7/12 at 3:55:
1) Nationals… –
2) Mariners… .5 GB
3) Padres… 1 GB
4) Rockies… 2.5 GB
5) Indians… 4 GB
This is so freaking retarded. How can you not find consistent ABs for your future MOTO bat? WOW.
Did we get any compensation picks when Meche signed with the Royals? Meche had a hot month in 2006 and I often wondered what they could get for him at the deadline.
Our one pick in the supplemental round that year was Matt Mangini, but I don’t know if that was from Meche or not…
He’s currently hitting .243/.271/.272 in 103 ABs at Double AA but he was just called up recently. He hit .265/.376/.431 at A+ ball in 181 ABs.
One step closer to that vesting option.
On whose calendar is it “half-way to Christmas”? Surely it’s more than half way through the year today, and xmas comes 6 days before the end of the year.
“And Jose Vidro again in that cleanup spot.” –Dave Niehaus
For what it’s worth, the broadcast crew is starting to make comments about Vidro hitting cleanup.
Wow! That was an unexpected variation of the Vidro Groundout.™
OK, that was high comedy.
Wow Vidro, wow.
After seeing the replay I can’t believe that Dave and Blow still think he was safe. Sure looked like Wash got him to me.
Is it legal under the CBA to release a player in the middle of a game? Please?
30+ pitches in the first inning for Bus. Maybe Johjima isn’t calling the right pitches again.
Well, we announced the Garcia trade in the middle of the game, while he was on the bench if I remember right, I could be wrong on that though. If you can do that, you should be able to DFA someone during a game too.
Go Felix said:

To be somewhat fair, we should be out of the inning already, the ump missed that call at first after Vidro’s craptastic throw IMO.
WashburnsucksDamn language barrier. That’s what it is, you know? It’s the fact that Washburnsucksdoesn’t speak Joh’s language. Here’s hoping he can salvage the start, increasing the liklihood of us
dumpingtrading him to a contender.Sentinel:
I love how Washburn tried to make that an excuse but his last few decent starts were do to his own tweaking of mechanics.
If I do something good I’ll take the credit.
If I do something bad it’s someone else’s fault.
Perhaps Wash should run for a Senate seat.
You know, my last post got me thinking about something.
I wonder if Japanese fingers look different from American fingers?
There’s a size joke there somewhere.
I think the middle finger is universal.
Update: Washburn still sucks.
a few questions.
did Washburn suddenly realize after his last few starts that he was in danger of being traded away from the comfy confines of the Mariner clubhouse?
who ever thought Vidro was a first baseman?
what happened to Game 93? It seems to be misisng from the recent posts…
one more.
are the Ms really going to allow themselve to be shutout by Gilbert Allen Meche?
Wait, isn’t this game 94?
Alright guys, that’s it for me. Have a great night. F’ing Betancourt.
Yuni is a pretty awesome baserunner
awww. the Fluid. Mudhoney & Green River, all playing this weekend.
I feel old.
Goddamn it. Throw a bench under Yuni until he figures out he is being paid to play PROFESSIONAL baseball. This horsesh*t is beyond tiresome.
The better question: will Gilbert Allen Meche allow the Mariners to score a run?
At some point, pity for former teammates does play a role.
Yuni is out of control running bases. He should be pulled from the game now. Jeez!
And a non-snarky congrats to Grudzialanek on 2K hits. That’s a cool achievement.
Middle of the lineup coming up in the 4th.
I wish that was a good thing.
Professional Groundout.™
I just saw Meche pee in his pants when Vidro came up to bat… He breathed a huge sigh of relief after he weakly grounded out. I could tell he was really worried about Vidro.
Listen to those happy fans! Your 2008 Mariners, spreading joy all over America (except Seattle). The real reason for those Santa caps is that it’s Christmas in July! Yay!
Are you sure he wasn’t laughing?
only 1999 more to go for Tug.
GO TUG!
Nice job, Tug…give that young man Vidro’s spot in the lineup!
Boy, the announcers are getting snarky!
It takes so little to please us. But dang it, I can’t help it, I am pleased.
What’s GIl Meche thinking right now?
“Oh god oh god must throw strikes! Professional hitter on deck!”
Whoop de freakin’ doo
That was some amazing protection by Vidro there. Meche saw him in the on deck circle and tossed up a meatball for Raul.
I have had the game on the entire time… I could not tell one play that happened or the score. The magic of the 2008 Mariners.
Well, good to see the same old Gil Meche.
WTF. WHY WOULD YOU SEND REED THERE.
So I look up and see a shambling amorphous blob that resembled Jose Vidro, but it was on base, so I knew it couldn’t be him.
Did Blowers sneak Rally Fries to somebody before the inning started?
did Perlozzo send Reed?
JEREMY!!!
Also, the Royals have Ho-Ram warming up in the bullpen…hence, the fun may just be starting.
Should be 5-3 right now.
At least they’re winning.
for now*
Your 2008 Seattle Mariners — where it’s possible to be both hero and goat on the same play!
How does a major league pitcher throw 100 pitches into the 6th inning and have no Ks but only 1 walk?
Cameraman would be a cool job– scan the crowd for hot chicks all day.
I never thought I’d say this but…
Richie would have caught that.
Maybe Vidro’s D will make the team realize they need to cut him…
can tug play 1B?
can tug play 1B?
Can Vidro?
Boy, that was sure a quality display of pitching there, Wash…lol.
‘Pepe’ Vidro:
Body of Spam
Glove of stone
Thats two Web Gems today and we’re only in the 6th!
Maybe Vidro’s D will make the team realize they need to cut him…
Naw, the FO would tell you that he rarely plays the position, so he gets a break. They’d probably also tell you that because he’s willing to play different positions that he will now get an extension.
Nice catch, Son of Eastern Europe.
Ho-Ram’s coming in — it’s tee-off time!
lets see if we can make horam look like cy young, its very possible
Ho-Ram isn’t a Mariner anymore. He’ll pitch like a Cy Young winner.
Shame
Please give me HoRam vs. Vidro. It’s a Bavasi wet dream come true!
Haha. How fitting.
Mariners are winning — Qwest commercial with an acorn made of sand.
Only thing missing is a blind squirrel.
I think most of us that have played any ball at all–Little League, High School or College we tought to look the ball into our glove. . . . .
On the slo-motion replay of Beltre’s off balance throw, Vidro saw the ball coming, waved ‘Ole at it while turning his head toward RF.
What the heck is that ‘bozo doing on the field in a MLB game?
This is totally BS. . .is there someone they really want with the first round draft pick next year?
DFA TURBO NOW. . .him playing makes the whole team look bush!
I wonder if Bavasi watches anymore.
Average pitch-to-contact stuff, with no strikeout pitch?
If they don’t show something this inning off HoRam …
Sh#t! 1.86 ERA!
maybe green should be closer so that morrow can start starting. why does the worst team in baseball need a closer anyway?
Killer defense?
Reed and Hulet have been robbed by good defense tonight.
Sure enough, Ho-Ram — who couldn’t get a flippin’ 1-2-3 inning last year if his life depended on it — just mowed the M’s down like he was the Second Coming of Jesse Orosco. Go figure! >:(
Especially when there’s not much to save these days.
This is a great question..
does this organization even realize it needs to go into rebuilding mode immediately?
Does Riggles just throw names into a hat to decide lineups these days??
That seems to be the only logical explanation.
Oh well..we’re winning…
Go M’s…
In other news…even though I said I wouldn’t do it..I may end up making the trek to Seattle to see the Indians and then the Sox the next night…I am letting fate decide for me…I have a one dollar bid on some tickets on eBay…If my bid holds up I’ll go..if not..I’ll take the boat out to the lake..
Jose Guillen holding court at first for his ex-teammates was pretty funny.
They actually don’t if you subscribe to the thought that the M’s are trying on purpose to lose games.
The M’s are pretty confusing. On one hand they run out Vidro in the 4 spot everyday. But then they have Morrow close??? Doesn’t make sense if you are trying to tank.
If they really want to compete for the worst record in the game then shouldn’t they let Batista pitch the 9th?
The M’s should also consider putting a “C” on Vidro’s uni and naming him captain ( He is a veteran /pro hitter) and full time first basemen for the remainder of the season.
I have been asking this since Morrow became closer. We are in rebuilding mode, the season is history. Send Morrow down now to start.
Johjima…weak nubber against HoRam. Yay now Clement…wait now Bloomquist is now our DH!
Why didn’t Clement start tonight? Right hander on the mound? Riggleman you are just as bad as Mac, when it comes to putting the line-up together.
That’s outrageous…I’d never pay that much!
108: i really dont think this organization knows it should be rebuilding. i just dont understand the moves this FO makes. they dont have to tank intentionally, just load the lineup, rotation, and bullpen with untested young players and see what happens. ill bet theyd lose just as many game as they will with the baconator and WFB hitting 4 and 5
why do we have to send morrow down? joba was allowed to stretch out with the yankees and it worked out just fine, its not like we can’t afford to lose a few games while he works out the kinks
This Ramirez guy looks pretty good..anyone know his story?
*sigh*
Actually, I think I’d rather have Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla take Vidro’s spot on the roster during the NHL’s off-season. After all, he played some played some little-league baseball as a kid, so chances are, he could probably hit (and play 1B) better than Vidro.
joba has nasty, devolped secondary pitches, pitcher, meaning more than one. Morrow has a get it over slider, and a change and splitter he neve uses. Morrow has to go down to the minors where he can devolope his off speed stuff and use it to get outs.
Boy, those first two breaking balls looked good.
So … what’s it gonna be … Morrow gets this last out or … 2 run walk off?
Hmmm, a four pitch walk. It can’t be the atmosphere at the stadium getting to him. This sounds like a typical crowd at Safeco these days, rooting for the other team and all.
Blowers: Brandon doens’t typically walk guys…
Well not this year he doesn’t.
ITS OVER!
well shit.
I cannot believe that just happened not 10 seconds after I wrote that. F*&K!
Are you kidding me?!?
Scott…
It’s for 3 tickets (and they are good seats too LOL) so for 33 cent each I figure why not…
And I agree about Iginla…he’s a much superior athlete to Vidro…then again who isn’t…
Wow..that’s game…sick
Well, crap…I just knew that was too good to be true…sigh.
And with that, the Mariners will not lose any ground in the Strasburg race.
Strasburg is on our side!
Do the Royals think they just hit a walk off in the World Series???
The closer thing is over for Morrow.
Start him and let him lose as a starter…
Nice loss M’s!
What a shitty (excellent Strasburg???) day.
Can we start Morrow now. Please…
I hate this season
Interesting note: if I am correct. All of Morrow’s ER’s are on Home Runs.
ugh
Do the Royals think they just hit a walk off in the World Series???
No, that’s relief because they didn’t lose to the M’s.
How pathetic is it that Ho-Ram — of all people –”beats” the M’s.
BFM
On the bright side, this might discourage the front office from using Morrow as the uber-closer of tomorrow, because they might have perceived that role for him to be as valuable as a starter.
Bill Krueger says only one base in a game hit isn’t enough for a DH.
Is he blind?
Hey Billy — Actually, if you’ve got one to Saturday’s game, it’s ’80’s Retro Day. Win or lose, that in itself should be worth the price of admission.
Err, “only one base hit in a game.”
Dyslexic?!?
Bill, man, thats Vidro…on a GOOD day.
Actually scott this whole season is retro 80’s…My band was supposed to play at Turn Back The Clock Night until they decided this season to go 80’s…so maybe next year…
Ya gotta love the World of Hard-Hitting Analysis that is Bill Krueger.
Let’s start at PETITION to the Front Office. . . DFA Vidro or we start wearing paper sacks over our heads (if we go to the game–better yet, just stay away and they lose out on our Beer and Garlic Fry money)
This is frickin’ PATHETIC ! ! !
Richie would have caught that.
Sounds like he might be doing that for the Yankees when he clear waivers. Or, that’s what I read on the ticker on ESPN.
Gawd, are the Yanks that hard up for a bat these days?
I am new to this saber stat geek game thing but I must say you stat folks are having a very difficult time with basic numbers. How can it be game 95 if our record as of tonight’s loss is 36-58?

See, the less irritating way of putting this would be something along the lines of ‘It’s actually game 94, DMZ’.
Instead, you’ve decided to be annoying. Good plan.
Um, good point, Tom. Looks like Derek or somebody skipped 93. It’s understandable; all these games start to look alike after a while. “Oh, is that the one where we scored FOUR runs?”
Hello Graham, No actually I have sent emails b4 so no one else would be aware and the # has changed. Check with DMZ. This game numbering thing is ongoing. So if you are going to be stat aware, be stat aware. I hope you are not to annoyed by truth. Game # is game #. If it isn’t right what is?
Ah, so you’ve decided to be annoying. Got it.
There are few things that are off-topic in a game thread; pointlessly trying to start a fight over something ridiculous about game numbering is one of them.
If you really think it’s that critical, send another email.
