There’s no evidence that protection, as we usually think of it, has a significant effect on batter performance.

Is there evidence that it doesn't? If so, could you point me to it?

I'd give '93 the nod over '97 if only due to Griffey's '97 performance being enhanced by hitting in front of Edgar. He didn't have that kind of protection in '93. Just putting the awesomeness of the performances in a bit more context.

it’s important to remember our roots, and maintain the map interpretation skills that got us here.
After all, what happens if you're ever a contestant on Mantracker?

Fielding percentage for infielders might border on better-than-nothing. But fielding percentage for outfielders, who barely accumulate any errors over the course of a season and often get them for throwing, is a complete waste.

Pizza Cutter over at Statistically Speaking (MVN) is working on a TotalZone-like rating system based on retrosheet data, but including more ratings of fielding, like OF arm and double-play ability. No large sets of data available yet, but it should be good for historical fielding once Pizza's done.

Aaaaaanyway, Richie Sexson (thankfully) never played center field for the Mariners, so let's get back on topic.

Being tall helps with catching throws, yes; but doesn’t make up for slow feet, a glove of stone, or not being left-handed.

Or being able to catch the ball when it's thrown to you....

I think the consistent line has been that people massively overstate that particular aspect of defense at first base.
