M’s Promote LaHair, demote Hulett

Dave · July 17, 2008 at 6:16 pm · Filed Under Mariners

The M’s called up Bryan LaHair from Triple-A Tacoma today, and he’ll get some playing time at first base against RHPs. LaHair’s not good, and his major league future is probably as a reserve at best, but this should hopefully mean less Vidro in the line-up, so that’s good news.

They still shouldn’t be settling for giving at-bats to a player with as limited a future as LaHair, though. He’s just not the answer to anything.

Darn, I was so hoping this was the day Vidro packed his bags and left.

The thing is, at this point I just want some variety. LaHair may suck, and he may even suck worse than Sexson or Vidro, or even Cairo, but I don’t care. I just want to see something else besides Sexson/Vidro/Cairo. I’d rather see a succession of random Little Leaguers than those guys.

Besides, there is a non-zero chance that LaHair might take advantage of his big break and show a little fluky hitting in a small sample, which would be fun to see (unless it results in him sticking around for the next five-ten years, waiting for the fluke to reappear).

Dave, is there anyone in particular you’d like to see the team bring up?

At this point, I would love to see random Little Leaguers playing instead of Vidro or Cairo.

I’m with Steve T. Time for some new blood. Could be WFB’s younger cousin Zeke Bloomquist.. I wouldn’t care.

I would be MUCH happier with this move if it meant cutting Vidro. The idea that he is still on the team is a joke.

Hulett gets what, 2-3 games to prove himself? Why call him up at all?

I’d like to see the Mariners start moving up Chris Tillma.. no wait. How about Tony Butl… nope. Well at least we can enjoy some marginal no future talent in return for Bedard when the team moves him on principle.

I’ve developed a theory that the M’s won’t cut Vidro because they fear someone else will pick him up and discover the details of his contract, blare them to the world, and the M’s FO will look even stupider than they do already (as hard as that is to imagine). In other words, Vidro isn’t extorting a roster spot with pictures, he’s using his actual contract.

    Re #8

My sources tell me Pepe dropped the paperwork and Tug picked it up but didn’t know who to call..

    Sorry Tug, back you go!

    You’ll be back somewhere.

Yeah, how dare he come up and not and set the world on fire? Guess LP will have no choice but to package him with whatever remaining talent is left in the system for some burned-out veteran who was once good.

As for LaHair, hey, ya never know…he might just be the next Bucky Jacobsen…lol.

Mariners: Kings of the WTF roster changes.

  12. msb on July 17th, 2008 8:33 pm

I don’t think any one really thought Tug was anything but a place holder.

  13. Mike Honcho on July 17th, 2008 9:27 pm

I actually don’t think LaHair’s presence affects Vidro at all. LaHair will 1B against RHPs, while Cairo will probably go against LHPs. Meanwhile, Vidro sits alone at “DH”…

At this point…all I can fathom is that Vidro has pictures of Mr. Lincoln or someone. How else do you explain “Mr. Sub-.600” OPS hitting in the four hole on ANY major league team???

And, Adam Jones had to be traded because he couldn’t make it in the 100 AB’s he was given with the M’s but has now hit .323/.349/.455 in June and .341/.400/.545 in July. I’m happy for him but want to punch myself in the face for being a Mariners fan.

Anyone know the PA’s until, God forbid, Vidro’s option vests?

  17. WardP on July 17th, 2008 11:17 pm

The Ms must be getting a bulk discount on Super Shuttle runs from Seattle to Tacoma.. how else to explain these apparently random movements of sub-replacement-level talent?

The Mariners.. where each individual part sucks veteran grit, and yet the whole somehow manages to be less than the sum of those parts..

    Only 339 to go!

I think it’s a subsidized season pass on the Sounder.

    Only 339 to go!

Divided over 67 games remaining, Vidro needs to average just over 5 PA / game. Even if he starts every remaining game, our lineup doesn’t turn over nearly often enough for that to happen.

Ichiro!’s not even getting that, so, no, the option is in no danger of vesting.

Dave, any word on those new international players we just signed?

Spare-part, easily acquirable guys I want playing first base instead of Bryan LaHair, Jose Vidro and Miguel Cairo:

    Andy Tracy
    Joe Koshansky
    Brad Nelson
    Michael Aubrey
    Jon Knott
    Chris Carter (either one, frankly)
    Jordan Brown
    Craig Brazell
    Kendry Morales
    Joe Dillon
    Brian Myrow
    Wes Bankston
    Josh Whitesell
    Randy Ruiz
    Oscar Salazar
    Val Pascucci
    Tagg Bozied
    John Lindsey
    Scott McClain

Dave I think your assessment of Brian will be accurate, but you are being extremely pessimistic. If you are going to state Lehair should be given up on or not brought up, I would expect a player who should be brought up to be named or an article on why they should part ways or trade Lehair. I think LeHair should be brought up and given an opportunity to play because you can’t build to the future without investing in it. Not to bring politics into baseball, but its like saying we shouldn’t drill because it will take 3-4 years to reach market i.e. we should roll over and give up attitude. This same thought process is what I see stemming from this post.
