What are the odds that Kenji goes yard? 500-1?

  11. msb on July 18th, 2008 9:11 pm

anybody need a hard-hitting left-fielder, who’ll fit into ANY clubhouse?

so, what are the odds on saturday that any of the current Mariners is wearing a 1989 uniform that is cut like a real 1989 uniform?

Ken Phelps on the radio side…

I had to look up kewl. I get it, although it sounds like a Valley Girl, and I have no idea how I could show off to the kids that I know it. I assume now that I’ve heard it, it will immediately disappear from the lexicon except to show who’s terminally unhip. Or unkewl.

oh. I have a friend who’s used it for years, so it didn’t even register.

man. Jamie Burke really hates being sat for long stretches.

ok. Yuni has got to take daily infield.

It wasn’t that long ago that watching Yuni was fun. Not so much now.

are folks that thrilled not to see Richie?

Mph. At least he saw a good number of pitches.

  24. jlc on July 18th, 2008 9:54 pm

I hope the Mariners don’t go from embarrassing to just bad and screw up their draft pick. We might as well get something out of this season.

  25. ChrisK on July 18th, 2008 10:29 pm

Another 42,570 came to see two last-place teams, thanks to Felix Bobblehead Night.

This franchise will never stop minting money, no matter how bad the on-field product gets. You can thank the casual fan for that.

Washburn has been felled by the dread flu-like symptoms, so Batista vs Sowers tomorrow.

That will make for some scintillating Fox Baseball.

and yet the pi printed an article last week how the m’s were going to lose money this year and may have to make a cash call on owners for next season. I’m supposed to have sympathy for the guys that were netting over 20 mill a year for the past decade? And the pi has the nerve to publish this as bad news? We’re just being set up for the under 80 mill payroll next year.

  28. galaxieboi on July 18th, 2008 11:49 pm

Oh. KEWL. I’ve spelled it that way for as long as I can remember. Like I spell grrrl. Things like that.

Hmmm. Pretty slow game thread, with Felix day and all. On the other hand, it was also Dark Knight Day, which was an amazing movie. Ledger friggin’ owned The Joker.

Oh yeah, and the Watchmen trailer was pretty awesome. When it came on I raised my fist and cheered, and I was probably the only one in the theater who even heard about the comic, much less read it.

We’re just being set up for the under 80 mill payroll next year.

I’m actually good with that. This year’s payroll includes two highly paid players who are worth having (Ichiro and Beltre), some reasonably priced guys under club control and more dead weight than the Titanic. If the $80 million doesn’t include Vidro, Cairo, Washburn, Batista, Johjima and Yuni, there’s a chance it would be a far better team than this year.

    The Power of Beltre, bubba.

  34. joser on July 19th, 2008 10:34 am

We’re just being set up for the under 80 mill payroll next year.

Just getting rid of Sexson has got them more than a third of the way there already. Subtract the stupid money they have sunk in Silva, Vidro, and Washburn ($25.35M) they’d be in the $77M range already. Unfortunately they’re on the hook for even more stupid money in Silva ($11M), Washburn ($10.35M), and Johjima ($8M) for next year.

And that’s the real problem. Heaven forbid the M’s were an $80M payroll team like the Brewers; I mean, just look at their respective records — clearly, having less than $117M is certain doom and $117M is guaranteed success, especially in a non-competitive division like the NL Central. Last I checked, the M’s were looking up, way up, at the Rangers ($68M) and Oakland ($48M). (Let’s not even mention Florida –$20M– or Tampa Bay –$43M). No, it’s clear you can have a winning team with an $80M payroll. But the real problem for the M’s is all those contracts Bavasi has wound around their necks, so that now they need more than $80M just to make up for the deadweight they’re already paying for. This is a hole the next GM will spend years digging the team out of, and more money will just allow him (or her) to do that faster.
