say, didja know that under Jim Riggleman, Willie Bloomquist has finally gotten consistent playing time for the first time in his career?
must be true, ’cause it was on the radio.
I sense a slow comment thread ahead.
After an extended vacation… and on Felix Day no less! Tough times in Marinerville.
Felix Night notwithstanding, it is a beautiful Friday night, which usually bodes ill for plentiful game threads.
Interesting lineup today. Something we haven’t really seen all year.
I noticed that on the Mariner’s website, they have taken down the standings as one of the features that loads on startup. They have replaced it with the Mariners leaders in batting and pitching statistics. I laughed when I saw that.
And I guess with the new Batman movie and all…
But really, shouldn’t this team give Clement all the ABs it can at this point? sadfkl;dshnfi;dslhfb
Baker blogs about Bedard & reduced time for Vidro & Burke.
Of course, there they are, both are in tonight …
Mariners’
Yay Felix… Boo everyone else! This game is in serious need of rum and cokes.
No Vidro?
Gameday has Cairo at 1st as does Baker???
Guess we’ll soon know.
They did not just show the Market with guys throwing fish! What is this, every Seahawks game?!
When did Rizzs lose the satanic goatee? I liked him better that way. Enjoy your vacation, but come back, Dave N.
The lineup isn’t horrible…*sigh*
Wow, Aaron Laffey has more than a run difference between his ERA and his FIP. Perhaps his luck runs out tonight…or something.
Wow!!! An edit link with a ‘this will self-destruct’ timer. Kewl, nice work guys.
Batman was freakin’ awesome, by the way.
And we also saw a preview for Watchmen!
I think the Evil Rizzs goatee is an off-season/ST thing.
say! I hear Grady Sizemore is from the area!
With Bedard out, Burke may not get much more playing time. Be nice to see him do something special tonight.
Nice start for Felix.
Batman! I’m so jealous. I took the grandkids to Kit Kittredge yesterday. Though we did see the Incredible Hulk last week. William Hurt was never Spicoli, but he was enough on the goofy side that seeing him as a rah rah general was weird. Maybe not as weird as Edward Norton as a mild-mannered scientist, though.
This Cleveland line-up stinks - look for Felix to dominate tonight.
I <3 fangraphs, really. Felix is hardly throwing his slider at all anymore. Elbow issue? Or, since they’re upping his innings is the team being more cautious with the slider? It appears Mel is a believer in the ‘establish the fastball’ mantra too. Felix’s groundball rate is also way down.
1K 2 weak ground balls, glorious!
19… Norton seemed… mis-cast.
Aaron Eckhart was excellent; I’ve become a fan of his after seeing “Thank You For Smoking.”
This lineup is so freakin’ awesome.
say! I hear Grady Sizemore is from the area!
You don’t say?! Everett perhaps?
This Cleveland line-up stinks - look for Felix to dominate tonight.
Dave, wtf happened to them?
Another day another stupid line-up with 4/9 players not worth watching. Mariners are lucky Batman sold out and i have nothing else to do for the evening.
Woohoo! M’s @ 58% WE!!
So anyways…Willie needs to stopp getting hits. A long 0 for 30 might be enought to get him out of the line-up.
Wow - Peralta has no range. Every SS on the planet makes that play.
Edward Norton will always be, first and foremost for me, the neonazi from “American History X.” Since the Hulk is kind of the ultimate Nietzschean Übermensch, it’s not much of a stretch. The mild-mannered part, maybe, but we all know Banner was just a fig leaf and Hulk was the real deal.
Batman….pfft. I’m going to see Space Chimps tonight…lol
Is Peralta mis-cast as a SS?
Yeah, kind of lost in the “disappointment” of an M’s season “unexpectedly” falling well short of the play-offs is the question of WTF happened to the Indians. They went deep last year. They were supposed to be the class of that division. They have geniuses in the front office. So what happened?
Why would 0-30 keep Bloomquist out of the lineup when 0-season can’t keep Vidro out?
so, Laffey, is what 12? Howsabout we get some runs here for Felix, eh? It is Felix Day, after all.
me, I just re-watched “Born to kill”– it may be 60 years old, but it is still damned weird.
You’re right I am being reasonable. Slap me next time, I should know better.
DMZ, You forgot to modify Cairo’s handedness to “nil” in the lineup.
Yuni Blast! The wrong kind…
Yuni shines at short…
man, that editing timer is hypnotic … 36 … 35… 34… 33… 32….
Why would you want anybody on this team to go 0 for 30? Gawd aren’t we awful enough?
Anyone know if Richie is playing for the Yanks tonight?
Oh no. Please no. Felix is doing that stretching thing with this back, and winced a bit after that walk.
Well…after Dan Uggla in the ASG, Yuni looks fine
BillyJive- 1-3 Rbi single.
I don’t expect many runs in this game.
We know the M’s can’t have a big inning with 4 replacement level or worse hitters in the lineup to stop any rallies.
And the Indians aren’t going to score much off of Felix.
So he’s still a singles machine…
So we have three and a half more years of both Johjima and Silva, right?
Ahh…I missed Felix. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with his back. I wouldn’t worry about his back, I think that was just a “stretching face.”
Speaking of old-tv-to-new-movies, I thought the new Get Smart was pretty good. Anything with Carell has potential to be hilarious…
watching Burke hand the ball that smacked the dirt to the ump reminds me, there is a great section in Feinstein’s Living on the black about scuffed balls.
“Older pitchers like Glavine and Mussina are constantly amazed when they see young pitchers get a ball back after a grounder to an infielder and throw it in to an umpire asking for a new ball because it has been scuffed by the infield dirt.
“Boggles my mind when I see that”, Mussina said. “You treat a scuffed ball like gold and hang onto it for as long as you can.”"
AHHH why do we still have burke, there is no reason for three catchers
I am really bored with the offensive side of our team. I really don’t know if I watch this game if Felix isn’t pitching.
Man, that Burke kid can hit…he can catch, he can pitch…He must be our most valuable trading chip…
edgar, Uggla had a really bad night in NY. Yuni has his head in a different Universe. Sad really… so much talent, so little focus.
Yuni is pissed! He never likes getting on base without getting to swing.
I hear the Marlins are looking for cheap catching help….
Jhhhonny! Must be the dirt at short.
Exactly…Burke for…hmm…Uggla?
*grin*
Battle of the Bad Shortstops!
Clutch walk!
“Willie Bloomquist with a leadoff base on balls”. God, I hate listening to Rizzs - how long must we tolerate him on the tube?
Don’t you mean…Gritty walk
Good job on “producing” a run there M’s! Just have a HBP, Error, and a BB. How they don’t score more runs is beyond me…
… and we miss the grand salami call as well ….
FUNKY!!!
WOO HOO RAUL!!!
Dave is gone all week; I’m hoping they do the mid-game swap with Sims.
I guess I need to make fun of our offense more often.
And Raul takes my foot and puts it in my mouth for me.
Rauuuuul! Woooooot!
Ahahahaha fantastic.
edgar, Uggla had a really bad night in NY. Yuni has his head in a different Universe. Sad really… so much talent, so little focus.
He’s tired of being shown up by Felix…
Yeah, that timer is a nice touch added to this site. Just think of all the secondary functions that you can use this timer for like holding your breath, boiling an egg, or timing one of Rick Rizzs’ monologues.
So kewl. Thanks USSM!
Any Sirius Satellite listeners here?
So Scott Ferrall had Jeff Nelson on his show just now, and lets just say he wasn’t the best interview in the whole world, being of straightforward, non-confrontational nature… anyway- I called in to agree that Nellie is a tool (his show sucks), and I was gonna rip Softy from KJR (honestly guys, that’s an unlistenable show…), whom Scottie flamed as well…. so I’m on hold as Rauuuuuuuul hits his blast. They were just talking about the M’s and went to me at the perfect time, I busted out “Get out your rye bread and mustard, it’s Grand Salami Time!” Thats as close to being a play by play guy as I’ll ever get… I was happy anyway!
weekend fun for Mr. Niehaus.
Dave is getting inducted on my birthday!
wonder what it’s like with a left-fielder …
Raul has the strangest gait, ever.
so, if you make someone a pie, I suppose it would be wrong to give it to them with a piece missing.
So who is on the radio tonight? Although Rick’s story about Phelps singing the National Anthem was interesting.
OK, I said the M’s wouldn’t have a big inning. In my defense, it took a single by Burke, an error by the shortstop, and a two out, bases loaded, four pitch walk to Willie Boom Boom. Oh, and a HBP to Betancourt.
that didn’t ‘get away from the catcher’– it pretty much never got to the catcher.
79: Tell them it needed to be quality checked.
joser, I pretty much agree with American History X, except for me there’s always that creepy grin from Primal Fear.
Did Yuni try to swing at the wild pitch, while warming up?
Sims is on the radio. I got out of the shower in time to hear “And the bases are loaded for Willie Bloomquist” and my eyes rolled so far I had trouble grabbing the towel.
Sims’ “Grand Slam” call needs work. Then again, how often has he had to use it?
Fun fact: Felix now has 50% of the grand slams hit by M’s this year. And that BB by Bloomquist represents ~14% of all his RBIs this year.
huh. it appears to be Sims, solo.
Typical managerial garbage. LaHair is called up, but Cairo plays, and somehow Clement doesnt end up in the lineup either. Great.
good of FSN to get back to the game in time to show strike three.
Laffey is a lefty. According to Mike Curto, the Mariners are still waiting for LeHair to hit a left-hander.
Clement and Reed have not been playing against LHP.
so, I walked out of the room– did Blowers explain to Rizzs that Willie was not a young player who had something to show if only he played more?
Thank you msb!
-Dreyfuss is the first member of the Pirates family since Bill Mazeroski, in 2001, to be elected into the Hall.-
Mr, Niehaus is in good ompany.
Hm. Pulling the ball, Jose….
Think that’s a good thing.
They had to pitch to Jose, cause if they walked him… VIDRO. Just sayin’.
Actually, even Cairo is a more threatening hitter than Vidro.
So either there is no protection effect (duh), or Cairo is really scary.
LOPEZ!!!
LOPEZ??
WOO HOO LOPEZ!!
8 runs!!…In one game!!!
so if Felix wins the rest of his games, and the Ms lose all the others, that gives him a very nice season, and the rest of us a #1 draft pick to look forward to, as well as an Historic Loss Record to go with an Historic Win Record.
here’s a question.
How come only Apple gets to sing in the Fruit of the Loom ads?
That 1B-B by Cairo’s name in the lineup is still bugging me. DMZ needs to change that B to an N. Mods? A little help here?
Ha! Laffey’s luck did run out. Kewl.
Steve Jobs bribed the production company?
HA HA HA “Carlos Silva continues to try to round into shape!”
“Carlos Silva continues to try to round into shape!”
Who said that? Really?
gasp! how much rounder can he get!!
[thinks Violet Beauregarde]
I think Rizz did. On TV.
[thinks Veruca Salt]
(thinks…’Can’t fight the seether, I can’t see her…’)
Oh, THAT Veruca Salt. You’re thinking of Violet, by the way.
I like the edit feature.
I learned a new word tonight. Kewl.
I learned a new word tonight. Kewl.
Do share.
What are the odds that Kenji goes yard? 500-1?
anybody need a hard-hitting left-fielder, who’ll fit into ANY clubhouse?
so, what are the odds on saturday that any of the current Mariners is wearing a 1989 uniform that is cut like a real 1989 uniform?
Ken Phelps on the radio side…
Too…many…jokes. System overload….
I had to look up kewl. I get it, although it sounds like a Valley Girl, and I have no idea how I could show off to the kids that I know it. I assume now that I’ve heard it, it will immediately disappear from the lexicon except to show who’s terminally unhip. Or unkewl.
Good discipline there Kenji.
Damn, Burke’s on FIYAH.
NPH. He has a PhD in Horribleness.
oh. I have a friend who’s used it for years, so it didn’t even register.
man. Jamie Burke really hates being sat for long stretches.
ok. Yuni has got to take daily infield.
It wasn’t that long ago that watching Yuni was fun. Not so much now.
OK, Bryan., get a hit. I’m rooting for you.
wow, what a greeting for LaHair.
are folks that thrilled not to see Richie?
Mph. At least he saw a good number of pitches.
I hope the Mariners don’t go from embarrassing to just bad and screw up their draft pick. We might as well get something out of this season.
Another 42,570 came to see two last-place teams, thanks to Felix Bobblehead Night.
This franchise will never stop minting money, no matter how bad the on-field product gets. You can thank the casual fan for that.
Washburn has been felled by the dread flu-like symptoms, so Batista vs Sowers tomorrow.
That will make for some scintillating Fox Baseball.
and yet the pi printed an article last week how the m’s were going to lose money this year and may have to make a cash call on owners for next season. I’m supposed to have sympathy for the guys that were netting over 20 mill a year for the past decade? And the pi has the nerve to publish this as bad news? We’re just being set up for the under 80 mill payroll next year.
Oh. KEWL. I’ve spelled it that way for as long as I can remember. Like I spell grrrl. Things like that.
Hmmm. Pretty slow game thread, with Felix day and all. On the other hand, it was also Dark Knight Day, which was an amazing movie. Ledger friggin’ owned The Joker.
Oh yeah, and the Watchmen trailer was pretty awesome. When it came on I raised my fist and cheered, and I was probably the only one in the theater who even heard about the comic, much less read it.
I’m actually good with that. This year’s payroll includes two highly paid players who are worth having (Ichiro and Beltre), some reasonably priced guys under club control and more dead weight than the Titanic. If the $80 million doesn’t include Vidro, Cairo, Washburn, Batista, Johjima and Yuni, there’s a chance it would be a far better team than this year.
what article was that?
were you talking about Hickey’s mid-week ‘analysis’ column?
The Power of Beltre, bubba.
We’re just being set up for the under 80 mill payroll next year.
Just getting rid of Sexson has got them more than a third of the way there already. Subtract the stupid money they have sunk in Silva, Vidro, and Washburn ($25.35M) they’d be in the $77M range already. Unfortunately they’re on the hook for even more stupid money in Silva ($11M), Washburn ($10.35M), and Johjima ($8M) for next year.
And that’s the real problem. Heaven forbid the M’s were an $80M payroll team like the Brewers; I mean, just look at their respective records — clearly, having less than $117M is certain doom and $117M is guaranteed success, especially in a non-competitive division like the NL Central. Last I checked, the M’s were looking up, way up, at the Rangers ($68M) and Oakland ($48M). (Let’s not even mention Florida –$20M– or Tampa Bay –$43M). No, it’s clear you can have a winning team with an $80M payroll. But the real problem for the M’s is all those contracts Bavasi has wound around their necks, so that now they need more than $80M just to make up for the deadweight they’re already paying for. This is a hole the next GM will spend years digging the team out of, and more money will just allow him (or her) to do that faster.
