    happy happy Felix day

  2. Go Felix on July 23rd, 2008 12:51 pm

The highlight of my week, Felix Day!!

  3. Dave on July 23rd, 2008 12:52 pm

I look forward to annoying, arrogant Boston fans learning what a good young pitcher actually looks like, while their newest pretend good young pitcher continues to get exposed.

  4. joser on July 23rd, 2008 12:55 pm

Man, I’m still debating going to this. It’s Felix, so I should. If it was sunny, I definitely would. But I really don’t like the idea of biking down there and then freezing my ass off in the stands.

  5. cdowley on July 23rd, 2008 12:57 pm

If I had A.) Money to buy a ticket and B.) Enough gas in my car to get there and back (which is exasperated by point A), I’d definitely head up there to soak in the one great starter we have right now.

  6. killer_ewok18 on July 23rd, 2008 12:58 pm

    1) San Diego… –
    2) Seattle… 1 GB
    3 Washington… 1 GB

I was starting to get scared there for a while, but we’ve managed to get right back in it. We do have some stiff competition though.

How did the Padres even get close to the post-season last year?

  7. crazyray7391 on July 23rd, 2008 1:10 pm

Ouch, yesterday Ryan Divish was on KJR saying that the M’s should send Yuni down to Tacoma. Well, they decided to one up that idea and replace Yuni with WFB today. If that doesn’t get his attention then nothing will.

  8. BigB on July 23rd, 2008 1:11 pm

Boy do I love me some Felix Day! Woooooooo!

  9. Go Felix on July 23rd, 2008 1:12 pm

    Lineup:

    RF Suzuki
    2B Lopez
    LF Ibanez
    DH Vidro
    3B Beltre
    CF Reed
    C Johjima
    1B La Hair
    SS Bloomquist

Manny’s out for Boston with a sore knee. Let the Felix domination begin!

  10. joser on July 23rd, 2008 1:19 pm

Ouch, yesterday Ryan Divish was on KJR saying that the M’s should send Yuni down to Tacoma. Well, they decided to one up that idea and replace Yuni with WFB today.

How does that “one up” the idea? If they sent Yuni down, who do you think would take his place on the field? This looks like “one down” on the idea. Sending him down to Tacoma would get his attention. Replacing him with Bloomquist (especially in a day after night game) just looks like a rest.

  11. Sinking Away on July 23rd, 2008 1:25 pm

Does anyone else want Felix to bat for Vidro?

  12. JerBear on July 23rd, 2008 1:31 pm

How did the Padres even get close to the post-season last year?

Hey, don’t forget the M’s were “close” to the post-season last year too…

  13. cody on July 23rd, 2008 1:37 pm

I look forward to seeing Felix shut down the Red Sox while their fans sit in their seats and gape at his awesomeness.
    Today’s predicted final score-
    Red Sox-1
    Seattle-0
    W-Bucholz-6 IP,12 H
    L-Hernandez-9 IP,15 K,0 ER
    LOB Boston 0, Seattle 17
    E- Lopez, Ibanez, Bentancourt
(Ichiro! goes 5-5, Vidro strikes out 4 times. After the game, Riggleman praises Vidro for “valiantly going down swinging each time.” He also adds that Vidro will hit 4th again tommorow.)

In other news, we are 38-0 when scoring more runs than the other team.

    Go Felix!

  14. Go Felix on July 23rd, 2008 1:47 pm

DP DP DP DP DP, come on.

  15. msb on July 23rd, 2008 1:53 pm

well, this is off to such a promising start.

The word you wanted there was exacerbated.

  17. JerBear on July 23rd, 2008 2:08 pm

Whether or not he exacerbated doesn’t seem like any business of yours…

    Sorry…the thread’s slow…couldn’t resist.

  18. JerBear on July 23rd, 2008 2:09 pm

Oooh, Vidro’s up. I just *know* he’s gonna give us a good at bat! My feelings tell me so!

  19. cdowley on July 23rd, 2008 2:22 pm

The word you wanted there was exacerbated.

Whoops, that’s what I get for posting during a sugar crash…

Am I the only one who saw Joh drop his bat while swinging in the on-deck circle when they were showing that closeup on Reed?

  20. Sinking Away on July 23rd, 2008 2:25 pm

Ouch, after such a nice catch.

  21. JerBear on July 23rd, 2008 2:28 pm

Aaaand that’s not how you play defense.

Ichiro! just wanted to make sure he gave a proper example of both.

  22. sparky on July 23rd, 2008 2:42 pm

Anyone know what the “on-field delay” that I saw on gameday is?

  23. scottiedawg on July 23rd, 2008 2:42 pm

What are these on-field delays MLB gameday is telling me about?

  24. JerBear on July 23rd, 2008 2:46 pm

Probably a couple argued calls at first.

They called LaHair safe when he looked out, and Francona argued.

Then they called Ichiro out when he looked safe and Riggleman argued.

  25. Paul B on July 23rd, 2008 2:53 pm

Raul is on fire! Any team in contention should be lining up to give the M’s several good prospects for him, more than the M’s could get in the draft.

  26. absolutsyd on July 23rd, 2008 2:59 pm

Good call not having Clement in the lineup today. And hearing the announcers trying to justify it makes it that much worse. Leadership behind the plate? Seriously? That must be why all the pitchers just love throwing to him…

  27. Sinking Away on July 23rd, 2008 2:59 pm

Here’s where we are today after 5,000 games.
    2,355 Wins, 2,643 Unwins and 2 Ties.

  28. BigB on July 23rd, 2008 3:01 pm

Does anyone else want Felix to bat for Vidro?

Nice. I know that I do.

  29. msb on July 23rd, 2008 3:11 pm

while their newest pretend good young pitcher continues to get exposed

sadly, when facing the Mariner offense the exposure gets delayed.

  30. jefffrane on July 23rd, 2008 3:13 pm

So I checked in and learned it as Felix Day. Yay! But wait, it’s Felix Afternoon Day and the game is half over. Boo! And Gameday says “error by Right Fielder Ichiro! Suzuki”. Error? WTF?!

  31. hans on July 23rd, 2008 3:27 pm

Following the game on Gameday is extremeley frustrating. Many of these pitches called “balls” are located within the strike zone. Some are even right over the heart of the plate. What gives?

    TURBO!!!!!

  35. TomC on July 23rd, 2008 3:39 pm

Woohooo! Vidro comes through! How does that saying about blind squirrels go?

  36. hans on July 23rd, 2008 3:39 pm

There is a DH for you.

    Ortiz Shmorteez

  37. brooklynmariners on July 23rd, 2008 3:39 pm

weird. i hope we dont trade the baconator, he’s the heart of our team. see how he hits HRs all the time?

  38. jsa on July 23rd, 2008 3:40 pm

Ah crap, I spoze that means the gritty Turbo will be around even longer because obviously he is hitting better than his numbers show.

  39. MattThompson on July 23rd, 2008 3:41 pm

OK, I’mat the game, and can’t believe Turbo hit that. Of course, it came as I’m badmouthing him to my neighbor. Maybe he heard me.

  40. SCL on July 23rd, 2008 3:43 pm

    Ortiz Shmorteez

    As in Schmorteez-bord!!!!

  41. Carson on July 23rd, 2008 3:52 pm

What the hell is the difference between using JJ in this high leverage situation, or using him in the 9th?

This is how you “ease” a guy back in?

  42. Sinking Away on July 23rd, 2008 3:55 pm

Someone please tell me Batista is not available to pitch today.

  43. cdowley on July 23rd, 2008 3:56 pm

Following the game on Gameday is extremeley frustrating. Many of these pitches called “balls” are located within the strike zone. Some are even right over the heart of the plate. What gives?

I watched the first few innings before I had to head out to do errands, and the ump had a frustratingly inconsistent strike zone. Seriously, Buccholz at one point put three pitches in about the same place, just off the upper outside corner. Two were called strikes, the other a ball. Oddly, the ball was the closest to the *actual* strike zone of the three.

  44. msb on July 23rd, 2008 4:00 pm

sounds like many batters are equally baffled.

  45. JerBear on July 23rd, 2008 4:06 pm

I noticed this early on too. He called a curve ball from Buchholz on the outside strike 3…2 pitches later he called the same pitch a ball…then he kept calling fastballs low & away strikes…

  46. brooklynmariners on July 23rd, 2008 4:08 pm

what a matchup on friday batista vs john parrish. its yet another bavasi wet dream…no question. no question at all. not a single goddamn question about anything

  47. Mike Snow on July 23rd, 2008 4:21 pm

This is how you “ease” a guy back in?

I don’t know, but past practice seems to have been that easing a guy back in only applies for one or two outings, and in any case J.J. appears to be back in form.

  48. forte40 on July 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm

Ellsbury came out of nowhere for that catch. Is that how a left fielder is supposed to play?

  49. brooklynmariners on July 23rd, 2008 4:36 pm

48: no a rookie should always respect a veteran and a LF should always give way to CF, how dare ellsbury catch that? ibanez usually lets those drop because hes a professional, i guess jacoby’s got a lot to learn before he can be a mariner

  50. brooklynmariners on July 23rd, 2008 4:36 pm

    gritty groundout

  51. MattThompson on July 23rd, 2008 4:45 pm

    Awesomeness from Ichiro!

One hell of a play by Ichiro.

  53. brooklynmariners on July 23rd, 2008 4:46 pm

  54. wlad on July 23rd, 2008 4:50 pm

Morrows gone more than 1.1 IP for the first time all season today!!!

  55. brooklynmariners on July 23rd, 2008 4:52 pm

i want to see him go 2 more innings…wishful thinking

  57. forte40 on July 23rd, 2008 5:05 pm

The speed of Turbo is feared around the league.

  58. Sinking Away on July 23rd, 2008 5:05 pm

Wow. Things might be going Vidro’s way today.

  59. Carson on July 23rd, 2008 5:08 pm

    “Vidro isn’t a blazer” – Sims

    Quote of the game.

  60. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 23rd, 2008 5:09 pm

Only 130-150 ABs until Vidro’s option vests!

  61. Tom in Edmonds on July 23rd, 2008 5:11 pm

Should we have a PR for Vidro?

  62. absolutsyd on July 23rd, 2008 5:12 pm

  63. Carson on July 23rd, 2008 5:13 pm

Clement is not pinch hitting.. why?

  64. absolutsyd on July 23rd, 2008 5:14 pm

Is it sad that I actually hoped that popup would be in play so Johjima would only get himself out?

  65. RallyFried on July 23rd, 2008 5:14 pm

  68. hititagainandagainandagain on July 23rd, 2008 5:16 pm

My DirectTV went out just in time, so I missed the doubleplay.

    Wow.

  69. abender20 on July 23rd, 2008 5:17 pm

Does someone keep records for number of devastating double plays hit into in a season? For a team that has so few men on base, Johjima is startlingly bad.

  70. jephdood on July 23rd, 2008 5:17 pm

God, Kenji is a POS this year.

  71. Carson on July 23rd, 2008 5:18 pm

With one out already? Yes, lets give away outs with zero gain.

  72. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 23rd, 2008 5:19 pm

AL ground into double play leaders

    Betancourt is the team leader.

  73. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 23rd, 2008 5:21 pm

Why is Bloomquist in center again?

  74. Benne on July 23rd, 2008 5:21 pm

    Nice one, Princess Willie.

  75. Tom in Edmonds on July 23rd, 2008 5:22 pm

OK Willie! Great time for your third error…

  76. CC03 on July 23rd, 2008 5:23 pm

I can’t remember the last time Johjima tried to protect the plate.

  77. Sinking Away on July 23rd, 2008 5:25 pm

Johjima isn’t bunting because that’s one of two things he does worse than hitting and catching.

  78. lokiforever on July 23rd, 2008 5:26 pm

For those of us at work – describe WFB’s error, blatant? Valliant Effort?

  79. zzyzx on July 23rd, 2008 5:27 pm

78 – ugly is the word I’d use. Did it hit his head?

  80. brooklynmariners on July 23rd, 2008 5:27 pm

it was a gritty error. he made a gutty effort but low and behold, had the ball go right off his glove. nice try though, he’s a real asset

  81. hititagainandagainandagain on July 23rd, 2008 5:30 pm

As painful as it is to get swept by the Red Sox, and as annoying as “Red Sox Nation” is, the Sox fans who dropped by this site to make comments on the game threads have been nothing but polite and courteous.

  82. Carson on July 23rd, 2008 5:31 pm

    Wait.

Willie got an XBH on the 10th? How did he finish historically?

  83. Carson on July 23rd, 2008 5:34 pm

78 – It was a deep fly ball. He was slowing down while on the run. He was very much “camped” under it. Even he makes that catch 499 out of 500 tries.

Crap. The HD feed just ended. Now I have to watch this suck in sucky analog.

  84. Tom in Edmonds on July 23rd, 2008 5:34 pm

FOX HD just went to New Orleans.

    Wish I went with them…

  85. msb on July 23rd, 2008 5:37 pm

what’s really sad is that 100 [ahem] games into the season, as Joh came up to bat, I had no confidence that Joh would get the run in, and all the confidence in the world that that at-bat was their last chance to win the game.

  86. zzyzx on July 23rd, 2008 5:42 pm

    Anyone feeling confident in Vidro?

  87. Sinking Away on July 23rd, 2008 5:42 pm

Sims, “Vidro is the game winning run.” Oops. It is not to be.

  88. zzyzx on July 23rd, 2008 5:43 pm

    Sigh… of course not.

  89. msb on July 23rd, 2008 5:43 pm

  93. Tom in Edmonds on July 23rd, 2008 5:48 pm

1-5 since the break. 5 straight loses. 38-63.

    Go M’s!

Good call not having Clement in the lineup today.

any updated reports on his thumb?

  95. James T on July 23rd, 2008 5:57 pm

It’s an interesting dichotomy to read the game thread here and the one over at Sons of Sam Horn.
    USSM-Hopeless Vidro!
    SoSH-You’re pathetic Hansen! Pathetic!

Except for the level of expectations, there’s not much difference.

  96. Karen on July 23rd, 2008 7:19 pm

Oh, yes there is, James… A lot of profanity is only one of the differences. Puerile-ness, for another (if there is such a word).

    There, not here.

Statheads reign at both sites, but here, at least, the discussions are understandable by the average blog reader. There…? Threads sometimes are practically unreadable, they’re so filled with acronyms for obscure stat analyses, and raw stats presented in unreadable form because someone doesn’t know how to blockquote or code/endcode.

  97. msb on July 23rd, 2008 8:09 pm

ah, the answer to my question from Danny O’Neil:

“Jeff Clement didn’t require any stitches for the nail that tore off the thumb nail on his throwing hand early in Tuesday’s game. He was sore, though, and isn’t in the lineup Wednesday. Kenji Johjima is catching with Jose Vidro as designated hitter. Manager Jim Riggleman said Clement can swing OK, but throwing is the issue. He didn’t completely rule out Clement playing on Friday, but said since the Mariners are scheduled to face left-hander John Parrish in Toronto, Clement’s return likely will wait until Saturday.

“If he’s totally 100 percent we may get him in there,” Riggleman said. “But if he’s anything less than 100 percent I might wait until Saturday when a right-hander’s pitching.”"

  98. scott19 on July 23rd, 2008 8:20 pm

the Mariners are scheduled to face left-hander John Parrish in Toronto

Gah, I guess Cito doesn’t want to win that game very badly, does he?

Then again, Gas Can Parrish will probably look like the Second Coming of The Big Unit against the M’s.

  99. killer_ewok18 on July 23rd, 2008 8:57 pm

Sexson with the #10 Sportscenter “Top Play.”

  100. msb on July 24th, 2008 7:48 am

    the Daily News:

“The Yankees signed Richie Sexson mainly for his righthanded bat, but he contributed heavily in the field Wednesday, including a terrific 3-6 double play to end the fifth inning. He also made a stunning stop on a grounder by Mike Redmond to end the sixth with a runner on second. He was involved in 12 of the 15 balls put in play by the Twins that went for outs.

Sexson said he takes pride in defense. “That’s an area of the game that kind of gets overlooked,” he said.”

[now were these stunning in contrast to who else has played at 1st this year? or because he is now a Yankee, in NY?]

  101. scott19 on July 24th, 2008 10:53 am

Well, considering how much of a butcher Giambi is at 1B, Richie probably looks like Olerud out there by comparison.
