Man, DMZ, you seem so… sad.

  2. Benne on July 30th, 2008 4:13 pm

Seeing Batista as the starter makes me sad. If only I had some SP Lager to wash away the sorrow…

I think we’re all going to have more fun watching the waiver wire tonight, won’t we?

Such interesting combinations. The Marlins are eyeing Rhodes now, and Manny too. Maybe we’ll get some crazy multiplayer deal with Florida and Boston, where we give up Rhodes and Ibañez and get embarrassingly little for it. Like, Manny, without a contract extension.

That’s what I love about this time of year. The possibilities!

  6. Benne on July 30th, 2008 4:47 pm

I highly doubt the Sox will trade Manny. They may let him walk in the offseason, but a midseason trade, in a heated division race? Not likely.

  7. joser on July 30th, 2008 4:48 pm

    Trade deadlines fever…. catch it!

  8. AssumedName on July 30th, 2008 4:52 pm

I like Batista games. It’s nice when you can catch a quick nap between pitches. Why rush things?

  9. joser on July 30th, 2008 4:53 pm

It’s going to be weird to see Pudge as a Yankee. The Tigers have something like $10M in deferred salary still to pay him; I wonder how long he’ll be cashing checks from Detroit? Or maybe the Yankees are helping out with that — Farnsworth seems like small potatoes in exchange.

  10. Benne on July 30th, 2008 4:56 pm

I’m still trying to figure out what Detroit hopes to accomplish with this trade. Was it a simple salary dump, or do they have another catcher waiting in the wings?

  11. Dave Clapper on July 30th, 2008 4:58 pm

So I guess Joh’s knee is okay?

  12. Zero Gravitas on July 30th, 2008 5:00 pm

Only game I’ve been to this year was Batista’s recent unsuccessful start against Cleveland at Safeco. I had a pretty good seat for viewing the plate and was shocked at how hard they were hitting the ball off him. It seemed a lot more ferocious than it looks on TV. He had decent velocity (although it never seemed to change!) but man they were really teeing off on him, even when they made outs. It actually made the game fun to watch. He didn’t last long but it wasn’t boring when he was in there. I actually felt kind of bad for him.

  13. 14limes on July 30th, 2008 5:03 pm

I dunno. I’m a Sox fan since birth, and none of my close friends want to keep him around. He’s a liability. Just last night, he kept a no-hitter alive by jogging calmly to first on a liner to third, and got booed. Again. But, it’s looking like it’ll just be between the Sox and the Fish: Manny for Hermida or Willingham, plus Ryan Tucker and Mike Stanton, says ESPN. I’d take it, if I were Theo.

But then, what would Florida have to offer us for Rhodes? The M’s had better hurry up and make a deal if they don’t want to be stuck with the lot they’ve got now.

  14. killer_ewok18 on July 30th, 2008 5:07 pm

So… where is Jeff Clement? Finger injury? Padilla = RHP, so the imaginary platoon doesn’t come into play…

He’s gotten, what, 1 start since he hurt his finger a week ago?

  15. Benne on July 30th, 2008 5:13 pm

I’m listening to the Rangers’ radio feed, and the broadcaster had several slight pauses while reading the M’s lineup, as if he couldn’t fathom both Cairo and Boom Boom playing regularly. It was quite amusing.

  16. Tek Jansen on July 30th, 2008 5:17 pm

I guess Yuni is in Riggelman’s doghouse after that botched squeeze last night.

Clement must still be injured. Even Riggs would start Clement over either Joh or Cairo.

  17. killer_ewok18 on July 30th, 2008 5:24 pm

“You just don’t see the blockbuster trades anymore.” — Blowers

Sabathia, Teixeira, and Harden are dog meat then, Blow?

  18. egreenlaw9 on July 30th, 2008 5:30 pm

I heard somewhere amid all this deadline ruckus that Sabathia might be a good fit for the M’s in the offseason.

    Any thoughts on that?

I don’t necessarily care if it’s true, but merely if it’s something that would be good for the M’s. I think it’s a given Bedard is gone this winter or next and it’d be nice to have a power lefty to go with Felix during his prime years.

It might actually be money well spent. Especially if we can dump Washburn.

  19. Bremerton guy on July 30th, 2008 5:32 pm

4 and 15: Last night on the game thread people were basically calling for Betancourt’s head. So if it’s not him, and it isn’t Bloomquist, who else is Riggleman going to trot out to SS? And it’s not like Bloomquist doesn’t contribute anything — at least he’s getting on base (actually, at the best rate on the team) and not swinging at the first pitch every at bat. Give the guy a break, huh?

  20. Go Felix on July 30th, 2008 5:35 pm

Willie swung so hard that time the bat broke before it hit the ball.

  21. Benne on July 30th, 2008 5:36 pm

That was the grittiest play I have ever seen.

  22. pgreyy on July 30th, 2008 5:37 pm

Clement IS still injured and can’t throw the ball, so he’s not an option.

…and Kenji, never the fleetest afoot, looks even stiffer and slower on the basepaths today.

  23. argh on July 30th, 2008 5:38 pm

So I suppose now we’re going to have to listen to a lot of stuff about how Willie’s not really clutch? Did you see that? Crippled guy (who doesn’t even speak English) on second base, tie game, 2 out and WHAMMO! run scores. I know clutch when I see clutch.

  24. Benne on July 30th, 2008 5:39 pm

For those that have TV, how bad is the rain?

  25. pgreyy on July 30th, 2008 5:40 pm

I think Ichiro! can continue to do that (infield hit) for another ten years or so…

…can’t believe that there are those here in Latteland that feel so cavalier about our giving that up.

RAIN: Doesn’t look bad on tv.

  26. argh on July 30th, 2008 5:41 pm

[24: sprinkle is all I can see so far]

  27. argh on July 30th, 2008 5:42 pm

  28. Benne on July 30th, 2008 5:43 pm

[24: sprinkle is all I can see so far]

That’s what I figured. The Rangers’ radio guy makes it sound like a downpour.

  29. pgreyy on July 30th, 2008 5:45 pm

    Well, there went the no-hitter.

  30. msb on July 30th, 2008 5:45 pm

re: Clement, from the TNT the other day

“Last week, when a pop fly sailed over the backstop – and clipped Clement’s thumb as it was hooked in the screen – about half of his nail was torn off. Tender wasn’t exactly the word for it.

“Away from the field, I wore a little metal brace to protect it, because it was real easy to just bump into something going about your normal life,” he said.

    How’d that feel.

    “Oh, man,” he said.

Team trainers iced the thumb to mitigate swelling, trimmed and soaked the nail daily.”

  31. G-Man on July 30th, 2008 5:46 pm

Batista looks 71 years old, so Josh assumed he was still in the HR Derby.

  32. msb on July 30th, 2008 5:50 pm

I can’t say that the fly ball outs in the first inning gave me a lot of confidence in Mr Batista tonight.

per Drayer, when the media got to Washburn last night, he greeted them with, “Now that they know about my speed, I must be worth three prospects”

  33. dsmiley on July 30th, 2008 5:51 pm

@12: Yeah, so far it looks like the Rangers are hitting Batista hard, too. They went 1-2-3 in the 1st inning but all three were hit hard. Then the homerun, then Bogs hits one or two really hard but foul.

This is looking to be a long night.

EDIT: Spoke too soon…2nd HR of the inning. Oh boy. And now a double.

    Goodie.

  34. pgreyy on July 30th, 2008 5:51 pm

    There goes the one hitter.

  35. Go Felix on July 30th, 2008 5:52 pm

Time to pull Batista. Oh wait, they shouldn’t have started him to begin with.

  36. Steve T on July 30th, 2008 5:52 pm

When I lived in Dallas a million years ago, there was no such thing as “sprinkle”. Even if there was, the drops were the size of cough drops. It was not at all unusual to get a couple of inches in an hour, and we once got something like 12 inches in 24 hours for two consecutive days. And in summer that rain is HOT on the skin. Never seen anything like it. Hope I never see it again.

  37. msb on July 30th, 2008 5:52 pm

I can’t say that the fly ball outs in the first inning gave me a lot of confidence in Mr Batista tonight.

    and apparently, with reason.

  38. dsmiley on July 30th, 2008 5:56 pm

Anyone notice the ad behind the plate for drivers (as in the golf clubs)? How fitting.

  39. Benne on July 30th, 2008 5:56 pm

How long until Batista gets pulled with “soreness”?

  40. Steve T on July 30th, 2008 5:57 pm

I hope the guy who sews the names on the Braves jerseys gets paid by the letter. Catalanotto, Saltalamacchia — if one of them rips his, they’ll have to delay the game for three hours.

  47. Go Felix on July 30th, 2008 6:02 pm

Nice catch Ibanez…not too shabby! Did you see that interested teams? He’s a cheetah out there.

  48. walkie83 on July 30th, 2008 6:02 pm

I wonder if people on this site will actually give Ibanez credit for that catch? That was VERY nice!

  49. Steve T on July 30th, 2008 6:02 pm

Brain fart. Saltalamacchia used to be a Brave, my mind hasn’t caught up. What year is this, 2003?

  50. msb on July 30th, 2008 6:05 pm

according to Riggleman, Silva didn’t want to be taken out of the game yesterday, but (my interpretation here) Riggleman insisted, due to suckiness.

speaking of suckiness, on the way home I was forced to loiter in a bar doorway, out of the sightlines as they shut down the sidewalk to film a scene for a Major Motion Picture (ah, Hollywood! ah, Glamour!), which turned out to be not quite so Hollywood, or so glamourous– an indie black comedy written & directed by Bob Goldthwait, starring Robin Williams.

Hmm, rolling out a pronounced flyballer in Texas in summer does not strike me as a way to boost his perceived value. Now using him as a gritty, run scoring pinch runner? That was almost genius.

  52. msb on July 30th, 2008 6:08 pm

My oh my, we need to get Dave a teleprompter.

looking up at Dave in the booth during games, he is looking at the game, at his scorebook, and at the media guides, while peering over his bifocals. I’m not sure I could get my eyes focussed on the outfield in a hurry …

  53. walkie83 on July 30th, 2008 6:11 pm

I know I’ll get bashed for this.. but the way Washburn has been pitching, he probably would have done better than Felix did a couple days ago… I know that is blaspheme .. since Felix is the god of ussmariner… (i still like felix)

  54. msb on July 30th, 2008 6:11 pm

    Saltalamacchia

there was a sign in the stands last night, with I [heart] Saltalamacchia, where the last half of ‘Saltalamacchia’ ran off the edge of the poster and was over-written with a big black ‘Y’

  55. pgreyy on July 30th, 2008 6:12 pm

Wow, MSB…what did Shakes the Clown and Patch Adams ever do to you?

…and walkie83, the standard USS Mariner response to an exciting play in the field by Raul Ibanez would be that it would have been an average catch by an outfield with average defensive ability.

You don’t get much credit here for barely overcoming problems caused by your shortcomings.

  56. Benne on July 30th, 2008 6:15 pm

Good Lord, this game is crawling.

  57. walkie83 on July 30th, 2008 6:15 pm

pgreyy .. you guys are too arrogant for your own good. If Ibanez does something good.. you ignore it or make an excuse. If Felix does bad.. you ignore it or make an excuse. Simply willful ignorance because they oppose or contradict your personal beliefs.

yeah yeah.. i know, I’m the one who is ignorant.. whatever. Truly I am when it comes to a number of things .. but at least I am not purposely ignorant because it contradicts what I already believe.

  58. Jeff Nye on July 30th, 2008 6:17 pm

Ibanez catches the balls he gets to just fine.

He just doesn’t get to very many, and that’s the problem.

pgreyy .. you guys are too arrogant for your own good. If Ibanez does something good.. you ignore it or make an excuse. If Felix does bad.. you ignore it or make an excuse. Simply willful ignorance because they oppose or contradict your personal beliefs.

Find one post where Dave or Derek have made excuses for Felix.

  60. msb on July 30th, 2008 6:19 pm

I think Dave was right when he told us to all settle in, as we were going to be here for a long while tonight.

and, man, it looks to be sweltering down there.

  61. walkie83 on July 30th, 2008 6:22 pm

okay.. I know Batista wasn’t really that good last year.. but he wasn’t this bad either! What happened? It seems like he is throwing a softball up there every time he takes the mound.

  62. Ninja Jordan on July 30th, 2008 6:24 pm

FWIW the Washburn to NYY trade is apparently dead (per http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playernews.aspx?sport=MLB&filter_teams=SEA)

  63. Benne on July 30th, 2008 6:25 pm

okay.. I know Batista wasn’t really that good last year.. but he wasn’t this bad either! What happened? It seems like he is throwing a softball up there every time he takes the mound.

A quick look at his Fangraphs page tells me this: his walk rate and home run rate are both up significantly, and a lower LOB% means that he’s not getting as lucky as he was last year.

In other words: Batista’s falling off a cliff.

  64. walkie83 on July 30th, 2008 6:27 pm

Benne .. no need, they have others that can do that for them. Don’t get me wrong, I really like this site. I think everyone has some really good and interesting opinions about things. However, I also think a lot of people here are blind to some evidence out there based on their prejudice. Not really that big of a deal .. since everyone is in some way. I just like to refute it sometimes.

Ichiro just popped up .. we still have a chance to trade him. Pull the trigger! hehe

  65. gwangung on July 30th, 2008 6:29 pm

  69. pgreyy on July 30th, 2008 6:30 pm

pgreyy .. you guys are too arrogant for your own good. If Ibanez does something good.. you ignore it or make an excuse.

Yes, of course, the problem is the people associated with USS Mariner.

I’m only an occasional commenter here, certainly not worthy of being included in the “you guys” category, but even in my occasionality, I’ve gone on record here as being an Ibanez fan…

But, being a fan doesn’t change the truth.

As someone who has grown to appreciate the USS Mariner way of looking at baseball through definable and predictive metrics, I have to accept that Raul Ibanez is a below average fielder with diminishing skills–because that’s what’s true.

It doesn’t mean that I’m unhappy that Raul made that catch…but I’d be happier if he was our DH and not costing us runs and wins in the field.

It makes no sense to shake your fist at the clouds here, walkie83…either you understand and appreciate how things are analyzed here at USS Mariner or you’ll have a stroke trying to shout at us how gritty Willie Boom-Boom is and how important chemistry is in roster development–and that won’t make ANYONE happy.

yeah yeah.. i know, I’m the one who is ignorant.. whatever. Truly I am when it comes to a number of things .. but at least I am not purposely ignorant because it contradicts what I already believe.

One catch doesn’t make someone a good fielder, one hit doesn’t make someone a clutch hitter…that’s the lesson that USS Mariner would teach all of us.

Ignoring that this is the predominant message of this site and choosing to try to convince everyone here that they’re wrong about how they view the game…that’s, at best, a fool’s gambit.

There is a difference between belief and understanding based on data. Raul does not get to many balls in the outfield, far fewer than other left fielders. That is a fact. We have actual data we can use to learn that. It doesn’t matter what I believe, Raul is a slow runner who is unable to get to balls that other fielders would turn into outs.

  71. HamNasty on July 30th, 2008 6:31 pm

That is a sweet catch, tough to jump off that leg running back that way.

  72. msb on July 30th, 2008 6:32 pm

However, I also think a lot of people here are blind to some evidence out there based on their prejudice.

I’d still like to know what evidence you are talking about.

  73. Colm on July 30th, 2008 6:35 pm

walkie83 – I thought a deeper analysis of how Washburn is pitching since May suggests that he’s notching K’s, BB’s, and flyballs at about the same rate whilst his BABIP has declined significantly. (Forgive me, this is just off the top of my head – I can’t recall the HR/fly ratio, or changes in his LOB%).

He was never as bad as he looked early in the season – he was rather unlucky; and he’s not as good as he has looked for the last month – he’s a bit lucky.

Dave and Derek might seem a bit brusque to you, but they genuinely know a lot more about the game – in particular which evidence is actually indicative of player skill and predictive of future results – than most mainstream analysts. (Or at least more than most mainstream commentators let on).

  74. walkie83 on July 30th, 2008 6:37 pm

I agree, if the M’s had a better team, I’d want Ibanez at DH. However, the M’s absolutely suck and there aren’t a lot of people who can replace him in LF… would you rather have Willie and Reed in there at the same time? Maybe the defense would be better.. but the offense would suck! And don’t say we should have Wladimir Balentien up here. He sucks at the ML level, and needs more work in AAA first.

However, I know the season is over and we should be playing the Seattle Rainiers .. but we all know that won’t happen with this management.

  75. msb on July 30th, 2008 6:38 pm

so, our 4th-hitting 3B has more steals than our SS ….

  76. Jeff Nye on July 30th, 2008 6:41 pm

I know this team isn’t that fun to watch, but tone check, guys. Come on.

  77. DMZ on July 30th, 2008 6:42 pm

It’s days like this that make me want to not give Ibanez credit. I don’t even know how many times we’ve lauded his bat, talked about how the M’s correctly saw a great fit for his swing in Safeco when we were skeptical, discussed how to make the most of his skills — and yet the stream of drive-by “you hate Ibanez and never recognize anything he does right” continues forever.

Why bother? Why not call him “Sluggo the Superfielder” and speculate on the moral fiber of his mom? If we’re going to get the reputation, why not have some fun at it?

  78. Go Felix on July 30th, 2008 6:43 pm

Rauuuuuul Ibanez, cheetah on the base paths.

  79. walkie83 on July 30th, 2008 6:44 pm

the evidence I’m talking about is right before your eyes .. when you actually watch a game. Sometimes you guys get so caught up in all these crazy numbers that you are blind to what is actually taking place.

oh.. and I never said I knew more than Dave or Derek. Just because I don’t spend hours a day looking at the new generation of statistics that people have made, doesn’t mean I shouldn’t have an opinion.

The truth is, luck does come into play in this game. That is why baseball is so unpredictable. That is why the Rockies made it to the world series last year. Numbers only mean so much ..

so yeah, Washburn has been lucky lately .. but the luck seems to be lasting quite a long time. If I were in the playoffs, I’d rather have a mediocre pitcher who has had a lot of luck lately – making him look like an ace, rather than an ace who has been pitching mediocre baseball lately.

  80. DMZ on July 30th, 2008 6:46 pm

I watch every game, dude. I’m at them or I’m watching them. So stuff the superiority.

When I watch games, I see a left fielder who might as well have one ankle chained to a post in left field, because he’s got about a 30′ range in any direction.

    There’s the truth in that.

  81. Go Felix on July 30th, 2008 6:46 pm

As if this game weren’t long enough…now we get to watch grounds keeping escapades.

  83. walkie83 on July 30th, 2008 6:47 pm

oh.. btw, I wasn’t at all referring to Felix when I said “an ace who has been pitching mediocre baseball lately” … I was just making a point.

What is the grounds crew doing at home?

  85. DMZ on July 30th, 2008 6:49 pm

Sluggo the Superfielder complained it was hard to get out of the batter’s box and they didn’t want to break the news that he’s slow and immobile to him.

  86. gwangung on July 30th, 2008 6:49 pm

the evidence I’m talking about is right before your eyes .. when you actually watch a game.

Please. You don’t think Dave and DMZ haven’t heard this a hundred times before?

The truth is, THAT ISN’T EVIDENCE. Those are observations, but those are subject to memory manipulation, forgotten plays and unnoticed behavior (not to mention obrserver’s bias).

Turn it around. ARE YOU AT ALL THE GAMES? I mean, physically, not watching it on TV. If not, you DON’T have any evidence, because you’re relying on filtered perceptions.

  87. Jeff Nye on July 30th, 2008 6:50 pm

Sadly, I don’t think I have my picture of Ibanez’s fielding area anymore. :(

  88. Carson on July 30th, 2008 6:51 pm

When I watch games, I see a left fielder who might as well have one ankle chained to a post in left field, because he’s got about a 30′ range in any direction.

Hardly what I saw today. Yes, he isn’t the fastest guy in the league.. but he still made a great catch.

…and since when has having different opinions meant superiority? I just have a different opinion than you on some things. That doesn’t mean I think I know more than you. Just because I don’t eat up everything you say as absolute fact doesn’t mean I don’t respect your opinion. Do you really want everyone on this site to follow in line with everything you say? Honestly, I think having people with different opinions will actually help strengthen your argument.

I understand you being upset, though.. as I also try to watch a number of games. It is quite depressing…

I find it hard to believe that you, as reportedly a regular reader of USSM, fail to grasp the concept of small sample size. One good play does not cancel out the many, many comical miscues Raul has committed out there.

  96. Matt the Dragon on July 30th, 2008 6:56 pm

The truth is, luck does come into play in this game. That is why baseball is so unpredictable. That is why the Rockies made it to the world series last year. Numbers only mean so much ..

Seriously, you think the Rockies were lucky last year?

You don’t think that having been scored more runs relative to the runs they gave up than any other NL team would suggest they were exactly who would be expected to play iun the World Series?

Unless you mean they’re lucky they were in the NL rather than in the AL where they’d have been only the fourth best team.

  97. gwangung on July 30th, 2008 6:56 pm

    Hardly what I saw today.

Let me repeat. THAT ISN’T EVIDENCE.

You’re seeing a game filtered through camerawork. You don’t see the jumps he takes. You can’t compare jumps taken by different outfielders in the field.

I just have a different opinion than you on some things. T

And Derek and Dave have opinions AND data backing up those opinions. Not accepting that data doesn’t invalidate that data.

I never said he was the best .. or even a good outfielder. I just said that he often doesn’t get ANY credit for the good things that he actually does. I know he makes plenty of mistakes out there.. or that he just doesn’t have the ability to make certain plays. However, when he shows 100% effort and does what he is capable of, I can’t help but applaud him.

  101. Jeff Nye on July 30th, 2008 7:00 pm

If your opinion doesn’t include Raul Ibanez having probably the worst range of any starting left fielder in baseball, then it’s time to rethink your opinion.

Our tools to evaluate defense are rudimentary, but we can tell the extremes of the spectrum pretty reliably.

As a left fielder Raul Ibanez is a disaster, particularly in Safeco.

He makes nice defensive plays about as often as Willie Bloomquist gets extra base hits, so your opinion of him shouldn’t change when that happens.

Just because I don’t eat up everything you say as absolute fact doesn’t mean I don’t respect your opinion.

So, I’m listening to a Giants/Nationals game last week–and yes, that match up made for a tedious series–and Paul Lo Duca’s been moved to left field/first base.

On one attempt in left field, Jon Miller said, “He ran after that like a catcher.”

And naturally, I thought of Ibanez.

Isn’t he our forth catcher? Or is it Willie?

  110. Carson on July 30th, 2008 7:03 pm

Dear mods, my apologies for feeding the trolls…

So, I’m to presume from this you believe that the order of their 90 wins was relevant somehow? Because their win-loss record was deflated by poor luck coming into September they were lucky?

I’m not entirely sure I can follow your unique brand of logic, but over 162 games they had the NL’s expected best record based on their runs scored and allowed. They were actually unlucky to finish as the wildcard rather than win their division outright.

  120. walkie83 on July 30th, 2008 7:11 pm

  121. walkie83 on July 30th, 2008 7:15 pm

    Matt,
I never said they were bad .. wow you are taking this personal. Are you from CO?

All I said was they were lucky because they got hot at the right time. Sure, they earned the number of wins they got.. blah blah blah. I don’t care. The M’s won 116 games in 2001 and couldn’t make it to the world series. It doesn’t mean it is because they weren’t the best team in the league that year, it just means that baseball is unpredictable and in the playoffs, anyone can beat anyone.. and luck is a factor. If the Rockies won all those games in a row early in the season .. and it regressed to the mean later in the year .. they likely would not have had the same success. They were “lucky” in the sense that they got on that streak at the right time!

Maybe this has been broached before, but I’d love to see some suggestions for what the starting lineup/pitching set-up would look like for the rest of the year if we had our druthers (assuming no trades take place)?
    One man’s opinion:

    1-Ichiro!-CF
    2-Lopez-2B
    3-Ibanez-DH
    4-Beltre-3B
    5-Clement-C
    6-Balentien-LF
    7-Reed-RF
    8-LaHair-1B
    9-Bloomquist-SS

    SP-Hernandez
SP-Bedard (in a week or two or whenever he feels like pitching again)
    SP-Washburn
SP-Morrow (after short demotion to stretch his outings out)
    SP-Rowland-Smith

    Anyone else?

pregame Shannon was laughing that she’d read that the Cubs have been in the market for more pitching, when Lou sat up and (oh what a shocker) decided he needed another bat, and that rumor had it that bat might be Raul– which had reminded her that Lou helped move Raul off the Ms and on to KC, and about a year later was reputed to have told the FO at the deadline that he needed a bat, you know, like that Ibanez kid.

Methinks that we need to blow up this team with the exceptions of Ichiro!, Felix, Morrow and Dickey.
