Ricciardi finally giving up on League, eh? It’s about time.

I still don’t get this deal for Toronto, though. Even if what Baker says about the need to be seen to be competing is true, with Matt Stairs already on the team I don’t see what Raul does for them.

It sounds like this wasn’t a fantastic deal for the M’s, and that they’re just as well served to take the two draft picks.

If they missed, it didn’t cost them a ton.

It’d be interesting to know who those two players were, though…

I’ve spoken to a couple of people there who believe it to be League and Lind but that seems… unlikely.

    From ESPN’s Stark blog:

According to an official of one team that spoke with those clubs Thursday, this would have been a 2-for-1 deal involving all major league players.

I hope ownership didn’t kill this deal because of their infatuation with Raul.

    or one player.

  7. Mike Honcho on July 31st, 2008 4:11 pm

    If it was Lind, damn…

  8. Gerald on July 31st, 2008 4:11 pm

If Lind was indeed included in that deal then whoever is ultimately responsible for declining the deal should have all their Ichiro bobbleheads confiscated.

    Gerald! Harsh!

    Caught in their own lies.

    Fire all of them.

Can we change genres, please? I’m sick of farce.

The Jays would have to be crazy to give up Lind for Raul. That’s an idiotic move on its face.

Except that he said that Jason Bay went to the Pirates, and 4 pretty good players went to the Pirates. Must have blanked out the Red Sox for a moment when he typed that.

Question – What’s the rule on salary owed when someone is picked up on waivers? Specifically, if Washburn is traded on August 31, he has to clear waivers first, right? If he’s claimed on waivers and the Mariners don’t pull him back, does the new team have to pay Washburn’s current contract salary next year or are the Mariners liable for that?

  14. njpozner on July 31st, 2008 5:03 pm

Sorry for my confusion on this matter, but the Mariners only get the draft picks if Raul rejects arbitration and signs somewhere else, right? How likely is that to happen?

  15. DMZ on July 31st, 2008 5:05 pm

If you waive a dude and he’s claimed, you’re off the hook for their salary.

If Raul declines arb or signs somewhere else before he has to make a decision, they get the picks. That’s pretty much assured to happen, though obviously others disagree.

I’d be surprised if Ibanez didn’t find a multi-year offer somewhere else and decline arbitration.

Who said that? Raul? The M’s?

I think maybe that DMZ is being kind to those of us who are skeptical for no real logical reason, just fatalism.

In my defense, it’s learned fatalism, but still…

If you’re betting real money, bet on DMZ’s take. If, like myself, you’re wagering fake-internet-currency of bitterness, then bet we never see those picks.

Sorry, but given the stupidity involved with not offering Guillen arbitration, I can very well think the Mariner front office could screw up getting decent draft picks for Ibanez.

“Chuck! Chuck! Come in here! Look what I got for Raul! It turns into a ROBOT!”

  21. cdowley on July 31st, 2008 11:02 pm

I’d be surprised if Ibanez didn’t find a multi-year offer somewhere else and decline arbitration.

Part of me thinks he’ll only get one-year offers from other clubs because of his age and declining skills. Maybe one year + a team option with a modest (i.e. 1 mil or less) buyout.

Guess I’m just more pessimistic on that than some people are…

I’m not the smartest person around so maybe someone can answer this foir me. If the non-waiver trade deadline ends at 4pm EST on July 31st, could a team put someone on the waiver list at 4:01 EST on July 31st or would they have to wait until August 1st.

My reasoning for this is if a team really wanted to sneak someone through waivers why wouldn’t they try it then. Some teams may be caught napping and you may be able to get the player through without him being claimed. Then you would be free to do what ever you wanted with him. Just a thought.

    From Stark:

“I really don’t know how to describe [The Mariners] right now,” one AL executive said. “It just seems to be a train wreck out there.”

I wonder, will we ever know if ChuckEHowie were the ones who nixed the latest attempts to work out a trade re: Ibanez and Washburn and even Beltre?

It’s hard to imagine Lee Pelekoudas made a decision on his own to reject the offers from Toronto, the Mets, and the Twins.

Maybe Geoff Baker can put his “investigative reporter” hat on and dig up some info on that. Then we can set up a picket line outside the Safeco Field executive office entrance/exit. Hopefully it won’t turn into a mini-WorldTrade-type riot… 🙂
