Arbitration does not need to be offered to free agents until the deadline in December.

In all likelihood, Ibañez would already have signed a new contract as a free agent by that point allowing the Mariner to offer arbitration with no possibility of it being accepted.

Count me as happy for not dealing Ibanez’s draft picks….I don’t care about anything Ibanez does this year, and I can’t imagine getting a return more valuable than two high picks.

On a day they could have done so much more if they had anyone in the organization capable of thinking outside the box, the Mariners remain the laughingstock of baseball:

Around 1PM Peter Gammons called the Mariners “the big losers at the trade deadline, saying, “The Rangers and A’s have both picked up a ton of good young talent in the last year. I don’t think Seattle realizes just how far behind the rest of the division they really are. It could be a long four or five years in Seattle.”

Great! Another four or five years of last place finishes…that’s something to look forward to. Now if they can hire Brian Cashman in the winter that could all change, but I guess we’ll have to wait on that…

(ESPN on Ibanez) According to an official of one team that spoke with those clubs Thursday, this would have been a 2-for-1 deal involving all major league players.

Were the “2-for-” the equivalent of two high draft picks? If not, no loss. (Unless Ibanez accepts arbitration or the M’s offer an extension… ugh.)
