Here’s how ancient I am: Growing up, I used to like MTV’s 120 Minutes but we didn’t (and couldn’t) get cable in my bit of unincorporated King County, so I used to bug friends in other states to mail me video tapes. If you grew up here with me, listening to the big Puget Sound radio stations, you must understand.
Today marks an unimportant milestone: Riggleman has now managed as many games as McLaren lost before being fired.

Prior to the internet, 120 minutes was one of the few ways to hear new music. (I grew up in Wenatchee, so, yes, I understand.) I would record it on Sunday nights and watch it during the week. It was cool.
wow, i’d never thought i’d see 120 Minutes mentioned on this site…i loved that show..Dave Kendall, Lewis Largent, Matt Pinfield, etc. I have the 1994 episode of 120 Minutes that the Beastie Boys hosted on a vhs tape.
He’ll be exciting at first, but turn out to be kind of a disappointment.

Growing up in’t Northern Ireland we didn’t get Channel Four until I was 17. I missed the first four seasons of The Tube. I’m still pissed off.

I’m watching the USA game, too. It’s so nice to watch a game without commentary, and just be able to hear the players’ chatter.

I know it’s all about results, but Raul has to have the ugliest swing in baseball. Looks like he’s trying to break his back, and then that weird, churning run….but I’ll miss you, bud, if you’re hitting the road.
Man, the Chinese are thorough. For a country that doesn’t know baseball, they got all the in-stadium sound effects nailed. They’ve got the house-organ ‘Charge’ theme, the hand-clap cadences, “We Will Rock You” at appropriate times, and even, for foul balls that leave the stadium, a shattering glass sound effect. Sounds just like a minor league game, but then every few minutes you get the stadium announcements in Mandarin. I wonder if they do dizzy-bat races for the seventh-inning stretch?

On one of the NBC filler shows, they mentioned that China imported the clay for the infield and the grass seed from the US. Guess they threw an organ and the sound effects board too?
Yeah. Now they’ve got Bon Jovi going between innings.
It took me a while to notice this, because all that is such a part of the sounds of baseball here in the US, but then it struck me as really out of place at the Olympics. I mean, do they do the NBA stadium-sound stuff at basketball games? But I’m really into it, now.

120 minutes was cool. I was so excited when 107.7 came on the air in the Puget sound area in 1991? Now I’m such an old fart I don’t even listen to it any more (but I love KEXP).
In fact I’m so old that when MTV came on the air we couldn’t get cable so I watched the horrible Friday Night Videos on ABC, late night Fridays to get my fix of those new fangled music videos.
I still don’t understand why they are kicking baseball out of the Olympics (softball I totally understand, it’s boring and the US is too dominant), baseball is global and competitive and fun to watch.
Ha! I’m so old I knew right away FNV were on NBC. And I’m old enough that KJET (AM) was the coolest radio station in town all through my high-school days. Sad day when they went off the air.
