Game 121, Mariners at Twins
DMZ · August 15, 2008 at 4:10 pm · Filed Under Mariners
Silva’s joyous return to Minnesota. Faces Liriano.
Seriously, the Twins offered to give the M’s $10m and the M’s wouldn’t take it. And now they get to face Silva. Their cup runneth over.

“Happy” Burger Chef Day, everyone!
Make mine a Bufalo Burger!
If I were a gambler I’d bet on the Twins, line be damned.
Considering the top-flight pitching matchup for tonight’s game, it’s probably safe to assume there’ll a run or two scored.
First no-doubt-about-it from Blowers @ 5:13
So, that’s why you want a fast CF? Hmm… I get it now.
Silva. Fucking. Sucks. “No doubt about it…”
Hmmm. Not off to a great start. Whouda predictatated that.
and Razz says that Sliva is still looking to get the sinker down. You’d've thought he have given up by now – it’s late August and he hasn’t found it.
I like how Silva’s panting already, two batters in. It’s not as though he’s had to run over and cover first….
Wow. There’s no surer way to know you suck as a pitcher than when Nick Punto doubles his SLG percentage at your expense.
I thought the Twins DFA’d Everett a couple of weeks ago. What happened?
Cairo wasn’t hoping that chopper would go foul, he was playing the bounce, and he misread the spin. You take an out when you can get it, Blowers, especially the way Sliva is pitching.
Can we release Silva already?
Less than three-and-a-half years of Silva, hooray!
We gonna see a no-no tonight?
Only ~1,274 (3.5 years) left of Silva! Yay!
it’s one of those “Rizzs reads the media guide” days over on the radio side.
Yes, Dave, but Silva had the Twins batting for him, not against him, when he pitched at the Metrodome.
According to Niehaus, Yankees released Sexson today.
It only took them how long to realize their mistake and then accept the process of correcting it?
Alexi Casilla got hurt almost immediately after Everett was DFA’d, unfortunately for us.
Hmm… 9 batters faced, 7 groundouts. I don’t think we’re going to score many runs today.
somebody got hurt
not to defend this FO, but the Yanks were looking at a league-minimum platoon player, not at a highly-played hometown starting-1B …
Funny thing is, the Yankees didn’t even WANT Sexson to begin with. In more than a month with the team, he got just 28 at-bats.
Us being Twins fans, to avoid any confusion. Forgot I wasn’t on a Twins forum.
Considering the top-flight pitching matchup for tonight’s game, it’s probably safe to assume there’ll a run or two scored.
Did you maybe say that before you looked at what Liriano’s done since his return?
A lot of people here were openly wondering what the Twins would want with someone like Washburn…for whatever reason, this organization is under the incorrect assumption that a bunch of awesome young pitchers need an old, formerly-good pitcher around them for some reason. The upside (I’m a Twins fan) is that the Twins would’ve upgraded their bullpen with one of the young starters.
26-
Was The Bus ever really considered “good”? At his best, I’d say he was just “okay.”
So, if you DFA someone, you’ve got 10 days to do something with them, and adding them back to your own roster is a valid assignment?
Hey, Ugarte gets a double!
Bako–
Yeah, I was sorta being polite.
Ron Gardenhire in particular, though, is under the impression that “veteran” means “good,” and I was trying to speak from the mouth of the organization. Seriously, he openly says as much in his interviews.
Washburn’s been regarded as a top-flight pitcher before. Granted, it was some time ago, but yeah, he’s been regarded as good.
Errors are rad…well only when the bad guys make them…
Twins fans have been waiting for that error all year. Buscher’s been steady since his callup this year, but previously has been a brutal fielder.
Brian Butcher says, “you’re welcome.”
You suck, Silva. You’re a terrible pitcher.
Yeah…we don’t miss Silva here.
Carlos, you fat tub of goo.
You stink. Revoke his buffet privileges.
Jeez, I know he’s struggling, but don’t you think “sucks” and “terrible” are a little har —
No, never mind. Sucks is the right word.
I wish I was a Twins fan.
And yet he isn’t wearing an M’s uniform…
Besides the contract issues, who is the worse pitcher? Horacio Ramirez, Carlos Silva, Miguel Batista, Jarrod Washburn, or Jeff Weaver?
I wish I was a Twins fan.
We’re not at a loss for mistakes as an organization, but yeah, it’s a pretty sweet deal most of the time.
Ron Gardenhire in particular, though, is under the impression that “veteran” means “good,” and I was trying to speak from the mouth of the organization. Seriously, he openly says as much in his interviews.
And yet he isn’t wearing an M’s uniform…
I wouldn’t complain if he was, I don’t think.
Not even Ron would let Vidro hit cleanup.
They should hold open tryouts for the Mariners
Hey….we could hire Hargrove again. He;s ready to go according to this article at ESPN.
So is it possible for Silva to throw himself against a wall?
I wonder who Silva’s gonna call out in the postgame interview.
I’d rank them (worst to
bestleast-worst):Batista
HoRam
Weaver
———–
Washburn
Silva
There’s a big gap between Washburn/Silva and the rest. Those two, bad as they are, still deserve to be on a MLB team (not making eight figures, mind you, but they’re not a waste of a roster spot).
Silva seems to be working hard at moving down the list though.
Silva is awful. But am I the only one who’s grown tired of the ritual fat/eating jokes — especially when they’re pretty much just endless repetitions of the same joke/insult with minimal variation? I mean, all simple repetitions of jokes are just catchphrases substituting for wit — “grit” jokes became eye-rollingly predictable in Bloomquist threads at least a couple years ago — but the fat jokes have a childishness to them that is doubly annoying. At least come up with original fat jokes, like any kid playing the dozens can manage.
[too far]
Every team makes mistakes. It’s one thing to go the wrong way once and a while, but it’s quite another to ALWAYS make the one move that’s diametrically opposed to sense. The ONLY halfway-defensible things this goddamn team has done in the past few years are some of the draft picks and DFAing their own previous horrible flubs. You don’t get Brownie points for releasing Vidro when you signed him in the first place, and played him every day at DH, except on those occasions when you played him at first or SECOND BASE (ten games last year, remember). MMPPPFFH. This is a team that has started Miguel Cairo at first base TWENTY-TWO TIMES this year. The Washburn fiasco is just the latest of a thousand abuses. Mariners = garbage. I HATE THEM. Come on, you jerks, let’s give up TWENTY tonight. There’s time.
I love that 48 following 47
Not even Ron would let Vidro hit cleanup.
Oh yeah? He penciled in Jason Tyner at DH enough to make me gag.
Everett was NOT DFA’ed. They asked him to accept a minor league assignment but did not DFA him. They were going to, but Alexi Casilla got hurt and they needed him back.
Silva’s post-game comments.
Those Twins are selfish. They were just trying to pad their stats by getting 9 runs off of me. They were supposed to make me look good again. I asked them before the game to go easy on me. I’m gonna throw someone against the wall.
The Twins might as well have kept their batting practice jerseys on, since this is taking on the look of extended BP…
[nope]
49-oh, believe me, my complaints are minimal. The Mariners are my second favorite organization (that’s why I read this blog) and I certainly see the difference between a team with frustrating mistakes and a team with nothing but frustrating mistakes.
I have to say, before the season I thought the Mariners might contend for the division this year. Was that the feeling in Washington?
When we play the RedSox, USSM is confusingly filled with Sawks fans…
When we play the Rays, USSM is confusingly filled with Rays fans…
And now, when we play the Twins, USSM is confusingly filled with Twins fans…?
It’s bad enough being a minority in being a Mariners fan when I go to games at Safeco…but being a minority in being a Mariners fan when I discuss the team’s shortcomings on USSM is just plain bizarre.
No offense to our guests who, for the most part, behave themselves while they’re here (and thanks are due to each of you for being so well-mannered, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from Minnesotans)…but I don’t care what team the M’s are playing, I wouldn’t think of going onto a website for the opposing team and join in their discussions…to complain about how YOUR team is doing (or how it is made up.)
I mean, if we could simply trade you heads up for whatever team you favor, we here at USSM would probably do it–so whatever you think you have to complain about…trust us, we have it much worse.
Does calling him El Senor Nacho Grange count?
Lets hear another rant Silva… Who is at fault this time?
#50 It’s not a fat joke, it’s a request…and if the side effect is some sort of medical issue, I wouldn’t cry about that.
In the Times blog, Larry Stone shoots down the Bonser rumor, and tries to get Lee to answer a question, any question
we have it much worse.
I know you do. I didn’t come here with the intention to complain about anything–I came here because I love this blog and enjoy the comments section. I read it constantly, though I rarely post. Since I have some insight on the Twins, however, I felt it was a fair time to make some comments.
Well, lots of people show up to watch a train wreck. Just human nature.
I knew I shouldn’t have looked at Gameday. Hell, I shouldn’t have looked at mlb.com for the score.
Did the Twins fans cheer Silva when he came out, since they knew what would happen?
So Silva is going to grab himself by the neck and throw himself into a wall???
thank goodness the M’s are making Liriano work after that tough 4th inning …
The team thought so, many fans thought so, and most sportswriters thought so.
Prominent weblog writers did not think so, and were derided by sportswriters and many fans for their analyses.
When the weblog writers were proved right, the team and the sportswriters insisted that no one could have seen this coming. One sportswriter in particular, who seems congenitally unable to acknowledge being wrong, has actually continued to mock the weblog writers while insisting that the failure of the team is due to the reasons beloved to sportswriters: mainly, bad attitude players who don’t
talk to sportswriterstry or care. Many of the fans, however, seem to have come around, and will be less easy to fool next time.
@54: the feeling among Mariners staff, newspaper reporters, and most casual fans was that we were going to build on the outstanding success of the previous year and seriously contend. However, I can’t think of ANY analysts (stats-drunk computer nerds) who believed that. The analyst consensus was somewhere between 70-82 wins, with most picking third place, a few fourths. Even the analysts have been caught off guard by the total collapse into garbagehood rather than plain sub-mediocrity; but then, if you look at their Pythag, they’re roughly where the analysts pegged them. They’re almost as unlucky this year as they were lucky last year.
I picked 78 wins. They’re not going to make that by a long shot.
A blog with high quality analysis and an uncharacteristically quality comments section (kudos to those who moderate) could have something to do with it as well.
Just speaking for myself, I appreciate the fans of other teams who come over here and are polite and give insight into their teams and their fan bases.
So according to Pelekoudas, the only way to “improve” is to get talent. Getting rid of an albatross in order to better set yourself up in the future apparently doesn’t count as “improving”.
And there might be a trade where we take on salary to get a player.
So when trying to get rid of someone they talk talent, and when picking someone up it’s described in terms of salary.
These guys are so far out there in terms of what it takes to run a team it’s not even funny.
65 and 66:
Truly, much of the reason I thought they’d contend was because of what the mainstream media was saying. Normally I pay little attention to it, especially as it relates to my own team, but it’s hard to ignore when it’s about a team you don’t know nearly as well.
Funny thing about the claim that “nobody could’ve seen this coming”…I feel the exact same way when ESPN announcers say things like “the Rays are still playing so well long after everyone thought they’d fade to the cellar again” or some such, when most of us knew that the “cellar” for them this year was probably third place, and their strong play is in no way a surprise.
Absolutely. Please allow me to revise and extend my earlier remarks.
Lots of people show up to watch a train wreck, espeically if there is a plesant watering hole with nice decor and good conversation where they can watch. Just human nature.
Come for the train wreck, stay for the quality writing.
(Actually, I think our Twins fans came for the high-quality blog, but the Rays and BoSox fans seemed to have come for the train wreck).
… and Riggleman doesn’t want to watch the rest of the fiasco. Can’t say I blame him…
That did not just happen…
Well said.
More like watching those Buddhist monks lighting themselves on fire.
…and that analogy would extend to then going onto a website for fans of Buddhist monks who can’t figure out why they’re still fans of people who keep pouring gasoline and lighting themselves on fire…because they have statistical evidence that lighting yourselves on fire doesn’t win your cause or your church any benefit…and then, for you as someone who ISN’T a fan of Buddhist monks, to choose to contribute to a discussion on that website with saying, “Well, our parish priest sometimes gives a bad sermon.”

(Full disclosure: I lived in the Twin Cities for awhile, I went to broadcasting school at Brown in Mpls, and then worked in Winona, MN for a year. Twins fans are good people. Just weird** how USSM seems to be a magnet for fans of other teams to join in the discussion of our misery.)
Speaking of misery…how about that “non-catch” call?
**ADDED: Not weird. An honor to the hardworking souls who keep trying to make a self-immolation understandable and entertaining. Thanks USSM!
That was a catch…
Riggleman is a lot shorter than I realized … and apparently precise & calm in his Umpiric Verbiage.
can the official scorer take away an error if the Ump calls it a non-catch?
Way to get your money’s worth, Jim.
If anyone’s curious, the Twins announcers are all absolutely slamming the ump for that Ichiro call, calling it ridiculous and poor. It’s telling, since our announcers never criticize the umpires.
Replay can’t come too soon.
Listening to the XM feed from Minnesota. The MN announcers say Ichiro was hot dogging the catch. Anyone watching the game? What happened?
It just doesn’t stop. SILVA DAY, BROUGHT TO ME BY: MY LIQUOR CABINET.
The MN announcers on radio (via XM) are calling Ichiro a hot dogger. They say that maybe he did lose the ball taking it out of his glove, but they’re saying he didn’t make a good catch, that he was showing off.
They even said Riggleman should have taken Ichiro with him when he left (a la Lopez).
80-are you listening to Dan Gladden? He thinks everyone’s hot dogging all the time.
80:
Ichiro wasn’t hot dogging the catch. It was his normal routine for a catch. The ball popped out of his hand on the exchange from the mitt. He had control of the ball in the mitt to make it a clear out.
Right on 81. Same here…..
Well, Shick Shadel is a sponser. Maybe the M’s should come up with a new version of the “Seven in the Seventh” promo. Call it the “seven by the second” contest. If the M’s are down by seven or more by the end of the second, you win a free stay at Shick Shadel in the offseason.
Call it community service…
time for a little more Thunderhead.
Iciro’s face in hi Def is more than a little red. He is one pi**ed off ball player.
How old is that ump? Could be the worst call I have ever seen.
What a jerk…
That’s Danny Gladden on the radio. He’s in full get off my lawn mode pretty much every night. On TV, the Twins announcers were criticizing the umpires for that call.
Silva gets lit up, the Mariners GM says something dumb and Mike Hargrove wants to manage a baseball team.
Some things never change…
I’m not sure of the announcers’ names. Not really fond of them, however.
Speaking of hot dogs. I think Costco has the Mariners fail dogs (cloverdale meats) at my local store again. I might go buy a few packs and make a nice bouquet for Silva. Professional hit by Miguel Cairo. I can’t stand anymore of this today.
I guess we have the final proof that last year’s “retirement” by Hargrove was really a “GTF outta here” move.
He managed to get a few months off to relax and reenergize, while at the same time managing to get far enough away from our train wreck to not have it affect him much.
Nice move on his part.
91 – You’re listening to John Gordon and Dan Gladden. They’re more informative than the TV announcers (Bert Blyleven and Dick Bremer) by far, but Gladden always comes off as a hateful, spiteful jackass. He’s one of those guys who constantly slams Moneyball while proudly proclaiming that he hasn’t read it, if that helps you understand his mentality.
Dan Gladden
Mark Wegner
I’ll be surprised if Hargrove gets another managing job.
@96: I’m betting he starts in the minors and we get the heartwarming story of his return some time in 2010.
95 – Thanks for the link on Wegner. It’s amusing, I suppose, that he’s from Minnesota.
Politicians can sponsor the 7th inning stretch?
The apocalypse is nigh…
Phelps is getting in the pool on CBUT (99) live going for #7 if anyone is interested.
Nice catch Rauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuul
PLEASE DO NOT BROADCAST THE RESULTS
It’s over….I won’t !
Silva stinks
did Sims say that Little Toot is in the game defensively?
105 – I saw a “Tug Hulett”…that must be him, yep.
“At least come up with original fat jokes, like any kid playing the dozens can manage.”
If Silva gets any bigger, he’ll be able to pitch with one ass cheek in 206 and the other in 425 during his windup.
Come back time. Oh wait, come back to reality.
There’s a Mariner parallel in there somewhere.
109 XteveX: Thank you.
Jim.
I’d say the lesson is it’s much cheaper to get rid of a toilet than a pile of crap.
But…did we get any toilet prospects in return?
You don’t want to just let that shit go for nothing, right?
It’s so nice living where we get CBUT on our cable system. NBC’s West coast coverage sucks. CBUT shows live events from 5pm into the evening. Since Watching Phelps swim earlier I’m now watching Canads Vs USA in baseball live.
Just think of the team that Canada ideally could have fielded, with Jason Bay, Justin Morneau, Jeff Francis, Erik Bedard (well, maybe not him), Ryan Dempster, Russell Martin, Matt Stairs and Joey Votto.
Yeah…a couple of my
geekfriends and I put together the “all-country” teams every couple years. My rhetoric is inadequate to express my gratitude that the Olympics only happen every four years.
Except they don’t.
Ask Vancouver in two years.
The inundation from the Winter Olympics leaking into all areas of culture and sports isn’t nearly as throat-clawingly constant as the Summer Olympics.
Hey Dave what do you think about claiming Vernon Wells on waivers???
Which is what’s gonna totally suck for the VAN Winter Games in 2010…seeing as though CTV has the contract for them and we don’t get CTV on Comcast.
In other words, with the Olympics but 2.5 hours away, instead of seeing wall-to-wall event coverage in real time, those of us here in Seattle will be stuck with NBC’s “awesome” coverage of Bob Costas sitting around in front of a fake fireplace in a studio somewhere in downtown Vancouver. >:(
Indeed. I’m actually looking forward to the ‘10 Winter Games, because Vancouver is but a 45-minute drive from Bellingham. Maybe I can sneak into Bode Miller’s posse.
I’m trying to see if I can do the Vincent Price/Jeff Goldblum “Fly” thing so that I can “buzz” on in to GM Place for the Canada-US hockey game.
Not during the Olympics it’s not going to be.
Look at Riggs, pulling the trick he learned from Joe Maddon last weekend.
