Silva to DL, Feierabend up

Mike Snow · August 16, 2008 at 5:44 pm · Filed Under Mariners

As you can probably tell from the lack of a game thread (sorry!), it looks like everyone is out enjoying the summer weather. After the game, the news is that the Chef has “triceps tendinitis,” so Silva going on the DL is the long-expected roster move that allows Ryan Feierabend to start Sunday.

Remember last year, when Jeff Weaver went on the disabled list because his pitching simply wasn’t cutting it in the majors anymore? Just imagine, what if the Mariners hadn’t done the prudent thing and signed Weaver to a one-year flyer, but instead had given him a multiyear, multimillion-dollar contract based on his reputation and veteran experience? Never mind, no imagination needed now.

One Silva is better than two… i mean
Imagine both of them on the DL with “triceps tendinitis”…horrendous

But good thing about Weaver is that he can always give us some complete-game shut-outs, lol. while his contract was only 8M comparing to Chef’s 12M, omg

One of the nicest days of the summer. I did think the world was coming to an end with no game thread. But with all the tank tops and shorts I did not care.

    Chef?

    lol

    Fitting.

And symbolic, if you consider the South Park character of the same name..

Kirby Arnold of The Herald of Evertt quotes John McLaren in a story for tomorrow’s editions:

“Maybe the 88 wins last year didn’t make as much sense as we thought. We won 88 games and then we added (Erik) Bedard and (Carlos) Silva and thought that would put us on our way. But maybe we over-achieved. Because of the run differential, the 88 wins didn’t make a lot of sense, but we still had 88 wins. We thought things would be better.”

As I see it, everyone from Howard Lincoln on down at the M’s front office owes Derek and Dave a monster-sized mea culpa.

You do have to admire the leadership and unselfishness that our favorite burger chef displayed by reportedly concealing his condition from the team and making his start in spite of alleged pain after his last bullpen session.

A more selfish player might look to pad his stats by only taking the field when actually physically able to perform.

This game was a perfect example of how the Ms don’t understand baseball fundamentals. All of Riggleman’s pitching changes from Green onwards were done to try to NOT lose as opposed to win the game…there is a big difference! I never saw one sequence of pitches attack a hitter and make him bat defensively. And what of Jimenez pitching in the 9th especially against hitters who eat up lefties? Does this mean JJ isn’t to be trusted any more with a save/hold situation? I’d just as soon put in Corcoran…he seemed to know what to pitch the other night to give him some leverage against some pretty lethal Angels hitters.

There is a timidness, tentativeness in the way this team is being managed and overseen by higher ups. It really does feel like the life has been sucked out of this team…I’d give anything to find out what players who have escaped the Ms recently (Sexson, Guillen) think about the change in venue and perspective. I can remember Safeco rocking in the bottom of the 9th with excitement and hope even though we were down by 3…now I hope Raul (a player I admire) can find a team next year with which to make it to the postseason, because he sure ain’t gonna experience it here (especially if he’s the only ‘power’ hitter in the 3-6 spots…look at the Angels with Guerrero, Teixeira, Anderson and Hunter…what this team could do if it had TWO of those hitters, let alone three or four).

And as for your Weaver question, I can only shudder at what might have happened…could you imagine a rotation including Silva, Batista and JW? What about the HoRam connection? Egads…

    Chef?

Somebody else called Silva that in a different thread, I just borrowed it, but I can’t remember who it was that used it originally.

  8. DAMellen on August 16th, 2008 6:26 pm

Did you mean to call him hte Chef?

  9. msb on August 16th, 2008 6:36 pm

Silva’s nickname in Minn was The Chief, and it just …. changed … one game thread here.

The most interesting thing about this quote is it shows McLaren understood that the M’s overachieved in ’07, but chose to remain willfully ignorant of the fact. It makes me wonder if the team’s management isn’t stupid, but delusional instead.

Meta questions by email, please, so threads stay on-topic. They’re currently disabled is all I know. Trying to keep performance running smoothly isn’t always compatible with the load from add-on features, although I can’t say whether that’s the reason at the moment.

7: “Somebody else called Silva that in a different thread, I just borrowed it, but I can’t remember who it was that used it originally.”

I guess maybe I can claim responsibility for that little bit-‘o’-fun, Mike (or, as Barry Gibb once said, “I started the joke that got the whole world laughing…”).

But since Silva insisted on referring to himself as “The Chief” in the first place, it just seemed like such a natural progression to drop the “i” and call him Chef instead. 🙂

  15. Sports on a Schtick on August 16th, 2008 6:49 pm

    Silva = Chief
    Chief = I Chef
    Silva = Chef
Chef = fat overpaid piece of junk

I have come to the conslusion that this is the more likely scenario.

  17. scott19 on August 16th, 2008 6:56 pm

Actually, considering that it’s The Chef, he might in fact be suffering from tri-TIP tendinitis.

  18. CaptainPoopy on August 16th, 2008 6:57 pm

Sorry Mike… my bad, just noticed. Hmm.. on thread. Silva sucks donkey balls, then eats them. He’s fat and needs to go away.

  19. dnc on August 16th, 2008 7:02 pm

“He’s a Scientologist? And will die from a stroke?”

Chef didn’t die from a stroke. IIRC, he died from falling off cliff, getting lanced by a rock on his landing, and then being eaten by wild animals.

    It was a good one.

    😉

  20. CaptainPoopy on August 16th, 2008 7:05 pm

Good point DNC. I guess that I should have clarified that the voice actor, Isaac Hayes, died from a stroke. By the way, that was a great episode, especially when, after he fell, he didn’t shit himself, so the boys thought that he was alive. Then, he blew hits pants off by pooping himself so hard.

  21. dnc on August 16th, 2008 7:14 pm

I knew where you were going with the Isaac Hayes reference (especially since the whole episode was, of course, inspired by him leaving the show). I was just having some fun with the whole Chef thing. Hence the 😉

And, literally, just the other day, too…bummer.

    Who was the man?…

  23. scott19 on August 16th, 2008 7:20 pm

I was referring to Isaac there.

Darn, I miss those option buttons.

  24. CaptainPoopy on August 16th, 2008 7:21 pm

So, it’s agreed upon, Silva’s new name is Isaac Hayes

  25. JimThomsen1965 on August 16th, 2008 7:22 pm

    Or “Carlos The Jacked.”

  26. scott19 on August 16th, 2008 7:23 pm

Yeah, but the rest of that line goes, “who would risk his neck for his brother man” — not “who would throw half his teammates under the bus”.

  27. scott19 on August 16th, 2008 7:25 pm

That’s it…I think we need to hook Silva up with a studio in LA and get him a series where he’s a PI!

  28. Mike Snow on August 16th, 2008 7:35 pm

    Or “Carlos The Jacked.”

You know, I got that one, but I wonder how many of the rest of us are old enough to catch it. Even Silva is so young that the Jackal’s career was mostly before he was born. The Venezuelan connection is good, though.

In the always-fun game of comparing Wikipedia entries, Isaac Hayes comes in at roughly 3,367 words, while Carlos the Jackal has 2,521, not including end matter. So there’s at least hope the kids can find out about who he is.

  29. niterunner on August 16th, 2008 8:05 pm

Morrow is pitching tonight. Does anyone know his pitch count limit for tonight.

  30. Dave in Palo Alto on August 16th, 2008 8:18 pm

#28 Of course, the Jackal is still alive, and has Hugo Chavez as a pen pal. And he also exists in Bourne fiction.

  31. Tek Jansen on August 16th, 2008 8:35 pm

So, right now the M’s rotation is Felix, Wash, 2RS, Feierabend, and who? They have an off day on Thurs., I think, so they don’t need to plug the hole right away. Will they move Dickey once again?

  32. scott19 on August 16th, 2008 9:13 pm

Or, keeping with the “Shaft” theme, here’s one:

Who’s the fat #4 starter…who always orders steak tartar? Silva (Damn right!)

Whoooo is the man…that would throw half his teammates under the bus? Silva (Can u dig it?)

Who’s the cat that won’t cop out…when there’s buffet all about? Silva (Right on!)

You say this cat Silva’s a bad mother…(Shut your mouth!)…But I’m talkin’ ’bout Silva! (Then we can dig it!)

He’s a complicated man…but no one understands him but his sous chef…Carlos Silva! 🙂

  33. Mike Snow on August 16th, 2008 9:31 pm

And he also exists in Bourne fiction.

Well done in showing that you have read the books and not just seen the movies. And considering when the books came out, it only proves my point.

  34. HeyItsTodd on August 16th, 2008 10:07 pm

“Triceps tendinitis” can occur when overreaching for the last piece of chicken at the buffet table.

It could be worse; he could have pulled his flabdomen, which would immobilize him for a long time and lead to further weight gain.

  35. Steve T on August 17th, 2008 12:21 am

The “triceps tendinitis” at Ruth’s Chris is really good, 32 ounces of pure belly fat. Silva has a standing reservation.

Isaac Hayes was an American original and a cultural icon — listen to his albums “Joy”, “Black Moses” and “Hot Buttered Soul”, and of course the Shaft soundtrack. Don’t even think about calling Silva after him. Silva is an obese pitcher; Isaac Hayes was a god.

  36. scott19 on August 17th, 2008 1:11 am

35: Amen to that…RIP, Brother Isaac!

One Silva is better than two… i mean

Imagine both of them on the DL with “triceps tendinitis”…horrendous

The DL isn’t strong enough to hold two Silvas…

  38. dsmiley on August 17th, 2008 3:37 am

Hey, Silva isn’t fat. He’s just big boned. And loaded with antitalent. It’s a ribosome condition…or something.

Seriously between Silva losing every game he pitches and Batista losing every game he touches, Washburn still being here, and Bedard being injured or “injured” all the time, I’ve just about had it with our starters. Felix, RRS, and Dickey are the only bright spots. I only mention RRS and Dickey as being decent because at least we’re getting what we pay for.

  39. TomC on August 17th, 2008 9:22 am

I agree with Steve T in #35. Silva is unworthy of connection, even mockingly, to truly talented individuals like Isaac Hayes.

I think of Silva as Weaver 2.0 – more Weaver than the first Weaver.

The most interesting thing about this quote is it shows McLaren understood that the M’s overachieved in ‘07, but chose to remain willfully ignorant of the fact. It makes me wonder if the team’s management isn’t stupid, but delusional instead.

I changed from wonder to conviction on this point a long time ago. I’ve actually started keeping a file of “patently false/delusional comments uttered by M’s management” but alas I’m travelling at the moment and it is on my machine at home. Trust me, it’s getting quite long — from Hargrove bringing in Mateo “to get a groundball out” (when he was, demonstrably and statistically, the most flyball-oriented active pitcher in the league) to Armstrong claiming “In my own mind, I’ve used statistical analysis the whole time I’ve been in the game,” to Lincoln insisting that he’s “satisfied with Armstrong’s job performance and comfortable with him leading the search for the new GM”… not to mention the very public insistence by the FO that there was “no chance” they’d change coaches or GMs just a couple of weeks before they did just that (though granted, from a management/PR pov it sometimes make sense to act delusional in public even when you’re thinking differently in private, they really seemed to believe Bavasi could pull a rabbit out of a hat right up until that last weekend sweep by the Nats). Heck, at Bavasi’s firing press conference they were still talking about being just a couple of players away from contending in ’09.

The management of this team operates on wishcasting, groupthink, and willful self-delusion. There’s room for that around the margins, but not as a central operating principle for a team (much less a multi-hundred million dollar company) in the 21st century. At least, not one that aspires to a winning record.

  41. Graham on August 17th, 2008 10:34 am

Actually I was kinda hoping we could get Weaver for a 2yr/$2M deal this offseason.

Sure, he’s not very good, but he’s not actually terrible and it’s $46M cheaper than the Silva option.
