Game 130, Athletics at Mariners

Meyer v Hernandez.

Felix has been more valuable than every other pitcher who started the season in the rotation combined, even if you consider negative value starters as zero. Discuss.

I so wanted to go to this game — day game with Felix pitching. But now the weather looks like crap so I wouldn’t be sitting in the sun anyway, and there goes half the reason for being there.

  2. smb on August 24th, 2008 12:44 pm

The laces on Felix’ cleats have contributed more to run prevention this year than all other starters in the rotation combined.

  3. matthew on August 24th, 2008 12:52 pm

Was that Mariners Fungo Bat commercial made by the people who do the annoying Money Tree commercials?

  4. Mike Snow on August 24th, 2008 1:01 pm

Why limit the proposition to the rotation at the beginning of the year? Even if you throw in Baek, Dickey, Rowland-Smith, and Feierabend, it doesn’t make that much difference.

  5. bakomariner on August 24th, 2008 1:11 pm

    Off to a smashing start…awesome…

  6. scott19 on August 24th, 2008 1:22 pm

Gee, you know it’s a depressing season when we can’t even get enthused about Felix Day anymore…

What’s worse, the M’s will probably get shut down today by their former 1B from 1977…oh, wait.

  7. JR Ewing on August 24th, 2008 1:43 pm

Any one have a thought on the increase in FB% and decrease GB% for Feilx this season. Obviously, it’s a small sample size, but we are in late August.

  8. DMZ on August 24th, 2008 1:47 pm

Players who’ve caught, pitches, and played 3B in the same season, post 1900: I think it’s ~21. Last done by Todd Zeile and Cody McKay in 2004. Three people did it in 2000 (Chris Sheldon, Keith Osik, Shane Halter).

  9. DMZ on August 24th, 2008 1:48 pm

That’s 20 through 2007 + Burke. If anyone else has done it this year, I don’t know about it.

    JUST IN UNDER THE BUZZER

Hannahan coming into this game vs. Felix

    3/6 2B .500 .667 .667 1.333

    Adding 2 homers today.

  12. DMZ on August 24th, 2008 1:50 pm

Oh crap, I screwed up: I looked at number of seasons. It’s number of *players*. Bernie Friberg did it three times. Stupid Friberg.

  13. DMZ on August 24th, 2008 1:51 pm

I see that the broadcast crew has now been handed the results of my research. Super.

  14. bakomariner on August 24th, 2008 1:55 pm

Like I said yesterday…Miguel Cairo: Ms 2008 MVP!!!!!!

    That’s soooooo sad…

  15. DMZ on August 24th, 2008 1:55 pm

    Cairo… power?

  16. pygmalion on August 24th, 2008 1:59 pm

    NO, Willie is the MVP!

    Denny Stark? Really?

  19. JR Ewing on August 24th, 2008 2:14 pm

Stark was signed during the first week of spring training. Looks like he spent time in West Tenn and Tacoma.

  20. MattThompson on August 24th, 2008 2:21 pm

I found it ironic that he was the focus of the ‘Building to the Future’ segment. They’d need a DeLorean to get back to that future.

Not if you disregard all of the bad starts of the non-Felix pitchers. An important point to keep in mind…

  22. bakomariner on August 24th, 2008 2:26 pm

The King gives up 3 home runs and Cairo and Joh have the only Ms XBH…go figure…

  23. JR Ewing on August 24th, 2008 2:29 pm

I think it’s time for everyone to accept that Cairo and Johjima should be Co-MVP’s for this season. Those who can only provide ignition from the bench are not eligible.

  24. Paul B on August 24th, 2008 2:57 pm

    Lopez!

    Lopez for DH! Or LF!

  25. bakomariner on August 24th, 2008 3:04 pm

Lopez only hits enough to be a middle infielder, but he doesn’t have the D to be there…such is our luck…

  26. PaulMolitorCocktail on August 24th, 2008 3:07 pm

    No doubt about it.

  27. JR Ewing on August 24th, 2008 3:12 pm

Why is the AL hits leader bunting for a basehit with a runner on 2nd and a 3-run lead ?

  28. G-Man on August 24th, 2008 3:12 pm

Ichiro bunting on his own or told to do it? I assumed told.

I didn’t like it when I saw it, and I really hated it when I realized Yuni was next.

  29. RallyFried on August 24th, 2008 3:14 pm

    Ibanez bails them out

  30. G-Man on August 24th, 2008 3:22 pm

Made-to-order DP ball, since two of thwe slowest guys in th eleague were the runners.

    Alas, foul.

    …but there it is now!

    Sims didn’t say “Rack ’em.”

  31. Grizz on August 24th, 2008 3:44 pm

Semi-interesting stat of the day: entering the game, Roy Corcoran’s groundball rate was 71%.

  32. maybemaybe on August 24th, 2008 4:12 pm

Just got in (I’m in Japan?) we won???? How did that happen? First post so hope this goes well.
    Go M’s

  33. Sports on a Schtick on August 24th, 2008 4:44 pm

All-time low for a game thread? Oh well, Felix won. You did good M’s.

  34. maybemaybe on August 24th, 2008 6:06 pm

Didn’t really know how bad this team was till I read the wrap up from ESPN “Johjima’s home run was Seattle’s 100th of the season.” Wow this team sucks. Anybody have any suggestions on who we will pick up this off-season?

  35. terry on August 24th, 2008 7:18 pm

Dang, both Washington and San Diego picked up a game on us….

  36. scott19 on August 24th, 2008 7:41 pm

“Anybody have any suggestions on who we will pick up this off-season?”

No doubt some 35-YO former “power” hitter who’s now totally burned-out, yet had 1-2 decent seasons five or so years ago for a semi-contender…thus was worth overpaying for his “leadership/chemistry” qualities.

    Felix VORP: 34.6
Washburn, Silva, Batista, Bedard, Dickey, Ryan R.S. combined VORP: -8.1 (Aaaahhhh!)
Washburn, Bedard, Dickey, R.R.S. (i.e. non- negative VORPers): 28.2

    Conclusion: You’re right.

Commentary: Bedard was a bust because he’s only pitched half a season. Dickey can be forgiven since it’s not really his job (not a starter)–of course, the VORP calculated here include relief appearances, so I don’t know how good he was as a starter. (I can’t help but love Mr. No UCL, even if he’s not doing much for my team.) R.R.S. has, unfortunately, way exceeded his peripherals and is due for a collapse (xFIP = 5.06).

I love Jarrod Washburn and am very excited that he leads non-Kings in IP for the Mariners this season. It is good to know that the guy who throws the second most innings has an ERA of 4.9 something that exceeds his FIP and xFIP. Are there anymore 34 year old pitchers with a whopping 4.9 Kd9 we could hire for a few years?

On the other hand, Felix is ours and no one else can have him.

  38. Slurve on August 24th, 2008 8:10 pm

If we get Strasburg the lookout landing will have to change their phrase to We have Felix AND Strasburg and you can’t have them.

  39. msb on August 24th, 2008 9:04 pm

    so, how was Felix?

Maybe. On the other hand, the only M’s hitting better than him (in OPS or OPS+) this season are Raul and Ichiro.

So on this team, you could put him just about anywhere and it would be an offensive upgrade.

Less than 50 comments on a Felix game thread just about says it for this season…. Worst ever?

I’d love to see a line chart of comments per game-thread… Or probably-actually a scatter plot with a trend line… 🙂 Maybe if I get bored I’ll do one at seasons end.
