Game 146, Mariners at Angels

DMZ · September 11, 2008 at 6:25 pm · Filed Under Mariners

7:05. Morrow v Weaver. Wooo! Morrow!

Dave and I have both argued here that the M’s don’t need to totally tear down, throwing out everyone to go entirely with the young and talented supplemented by the really cheap and readily available. I still see a lot of “tear it down! I’d rather see crappy youngsters play than this lot!” which assumes, first, that if you tear down there are prospects with long-term upside to play and their struggles will help the team out in future years.

But even these last few games, where the M’s have run out teams that a good PCL team could put a scare into, demonstrate that that’s not really true — now there are complaints about the horrible quality of these teams, the minor-league level starters pitching, and so on. It’s pretty clear that despite the sincere desire to see the team suck towards a purpose rather than just suck, no one’s happy seeing a game featuring a Mariner lineup this painful.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way — and hopefully the new GM can give us something better than these September lineups made everyday.

Still no lineup posted? What is the scoop?

Update: Ah! Yup, LaHair at first, Valbuena at 2nd. Lopez DHs.

The AL West-clinched Angels — ugh. Yeah.

Shannon Drayer on FSN! I’m happy to see she has a job again, although I hope she’ll move to KIRO to do in-depth post-game, but at least she’s back out there again in some on-air form.

    Happy Brandon Day!

however temporary it is. Hopefully the face-time hastens any KIRO decision making that might still need to be made

Happy Brandon Day! Though any outcome is sure to be a letdown after his debut.

tomorrows the annual charity fundraising Groz-with-Gas-athon.

If I had the money, I’d buy this for Dave & Derek:

“Watch a M’s Game in the Owners Suite w/ CEO Howard Lincoln”

there are many other Mariner-related items– lots of signed balls, a signed Ichiro photo, lots of game tickets with perks, and of course, the chance to “Job Shadow Jason Puckett” (add your own joke here)

and really, as you have the option– wouldn’t you rather “Job Shadow Elise Woodward”?

Yeah, but with Beltre and Clement both hurt (though Beltre is apparently in the game anyway, sigh), and an aversion to DHing Ibanez, there’s not really much horsepower to put in the lineup.

I’m curious why Valbuena is getting so much time though. Does he have a chance at being part of the picture next year? More so than, say, Tui?

  6. dsmiley on September 11th, 2008 7:13 pm

Is there history between Jered and Adrian? Granted my eyes are somewhat untrained, but it didn’t look like that pitch got away from Weaver.

  7. msb on September 11th, 2008 7:16 pm

Is there history between Jered and Adrian?

it looked like Adrian was trying to remember that very thing, standing at the plate

Alright, I guess I should watch at least one more game before the end of the season…

The tear down should happen with everyone who might wear a suit to work (Howard Lincoln never wears a tie, though, right?). Get the right people in charge and I, for one, will be happy to let them evaluate the talent–who’s got a shot at improving, who’s worth the money, who might bring the right guy in a trade.

Tough night for the home plate umpire!

  12. dsmiley on September 11th, 2008 7:25 pm

No kidding. That is one tough umpire!

PS. Brandon made Vlad look like a rookie on that breaking ball. Sick!

  13. Breadbaker on September 11th, 2008 7:27 pm

Brandon’s defininely starting to get a look on his face I’d love to see some October. In an M’s uniform.

  14. Breadbaker on September 11th, 2008 7:35 pm

Adrian looks like he’s in some serious pain.

  15. JerBear on September 11th, 2008 7:37 pm

    I heart Beltre.

  16. MattThompson on September 11th, 2008 7:40 pm

Wow. Advice to hitters – don’t get in a two-strike hole against Morrow. You simply can’t hit that curve.

  17. ManageWA on September 11th, 2008 7:50 pm

I miss the numbers on the posts… It made it so easy to track where I last read.

  18. MattThompson on September 11th, 2008 7:54 pm

Huh. Avoiding a two-strike hole not so tough right now. C’mon Brandon!

  19. MattThompson on September 11th, 2008 7:56 pm

    Woot!

  20. Madison Mariner on September 11th, 2008 7:57 pm

Speaking of the Angels, for some reason unknown to any living being, I went over to check out their game thread(i.e. the one at Halo Heaven) and….ow!…now my brain hurts.

Remind me to never do that again!

  21. emperorfelix on September 11th, 2008 8:02 pm

i wasnt aware Morrow was called up. I havent checked in on the M’s for a month. So how is he, any good and whats his E.R.A coming into the game.

  22. msb on September 11th, 2008 8:06 pm

could they not get no-hit by Weaver? please?

  23. msb on September 11th, 2008 8:22 pm

could they not get shut-out by Weaver? please?

  26. scottiedawg on September 11th, 2008 8:36 pm

Do we know of a pitch count for Brandon?

  27. Mike Snow on September 11th, 2008 8:41 pm

About 100, but Riggleman is supposed to have said definitely less than last time. I’d guess they get him out of there at this point.

  28. G-Man on September 11th, 2008 8:43 pm

Jamie Moyer with his 14th win. Ah, what could have been in Seattle.

  29. Grizz on September 11th, 2008 8:45 pm

Did Morrow throw any strikes in the lower half of the zone tonight? He will need to work on keeping the ball down more with his lower velocity as a starter.

  30. hark on September 11th, 2008 8:46 pm

    emperorfelix–

i wasnt aware Morrow was called up. I havent checked in on the M’s for a month. So how is he, any good and whats his E.R.A coming into the game.

I hope you’re joking, but just in case: he started on Friday against the Yankees. He threw 7-2/3 of no-hit ball with 8 strikeouts and three walks, surrendering one-hit and one run (earned). Combined with his relief appearances, his ERA entering the game is 1.42 with 55 strikeouts in 44.1 innings pitched.

We heart Morrow almost as much as we heart Felix now, just in caes you missed the memo.

  31. hark on September 11th, 2008 8:47 pm

    Grizz–

Did Morrow throw any strikes in the lower half of the zone tonight? He will need to work on keeping the ball down more with his lower velocity as a starter.

Well, his night isn’t over as yet, but the short answer is “yes”, he did. He got a few swinging strikeouts on breaking balls that bit the dust, making those evil Angels look like little leaguers. As for “watched” strikes low in the zone…haven’t been watching that closely, but I would assume the answer is yes. Pitch F/X anyone?

  32. msb on September 11th, 2008 8:49 pm

Jamie Moyer with his 14th win. Ah, what could have been in Seattle.

well, as Moyer was contemplating retirement rather than facing more losing in Seattle, possibly nothing.

  33. G-Man on September 11th, 2008 8:52 pm

GREAT AB for Yuni, 10 pitches so far.

  34. msb on September 11th, 2008 8:58 pm

I’m curious why Valbuena is getting so much time though.

speaking of Luis, I haven’t been listening to Rizzs– has the phrase ‘the little second baseman’ been said yet?

  35. msb on September 11th, 2008 9:04 pm

so, Lauren, glad you tuned this one in?

  36. Jim_H on September 11th, 2008 9:37 pm

I’m wondering if Valbuena is getting playing time so other teams can see is value as an off season trade?

  37. mln on September 11th, 2008 9:37 pm

Watching an M’s game with Howard Lincoln? Wow!

What Mariner fan wouldn’t be drooling over the prospect of this prize?

I’d love be the fly on the wall in Lincoln’s suite, as DMZ and Dave watch the Mariners bumble to another loss with Howard there.

I bet the foie gras in Howard’s suite would also be tasty.

  38. MattThompson on September 11th, 2008 9:39 pm

Well, at least they weren’t shutout.

    Oh, plus, Ichiro wooooot!

  39. msb on September 11th, 2008 10:03 pm

so, how cheap a “save” would this be?

  40. G-Man on September 11th, 2008 10:08 pm

A blown save would make my Mariners year.

  41. Carson on September 11th, 2008 10:21 pm

    Yay! Drayer on FSN!

I’ve been gone a couple days, is this her first night on the job?

  42. Slurve on September 11th, 2008 10:26 pm

I wouldn’t really wanna celebrate my accomplishment on 9/11 and the only person happy is k-rod…

  43. msb on September 11th, 2008 10:40 pm

Yay! Drayer on FSN! I’ve been gone a couple days, is this her first night on the job?

yup. she sounded a little nervous talking to Mathis, but then, she was also having to hollar up at him in the loud ballpark … so nice to have good questions asked once more.

  44. vj on September 11th, 2008 11:36 pm

    What’s wrong with Green?

  45. Slippery Elmer on September 12th, 2008 8:31 am

It doesn’t go with the Mariners blue and silver palette.

  46. vj on September 12th, 2008 10:17 am

I was referring to Sean Green, the relief pitcher who gave up four runs while only getting one out.

  47. Gomez on September 12th, 2008 12:23 pm

He had a bad night? He’s had a busy season? The Angels hit the ball well?

  48. mironos on September 12th, 2008 12:32 pm

Is it just me, or is it absolutely ridiculous that Brandon Morrow got tagged w/ that loss instead of Sean Green?
