Game 146, Mariners at Angels
RRS vs Saunders.
For all of the hoopla around K-Rod and his record for most vulture saves in a year, it’s not actually that great of a season, even for him. I thought about this: how would the two highest Mariner save seasons compare:
Putz 2007: 40 saves in 68 appearances, 10.3 K/9, 1.63 BB/9, 0.75 HR/9
Sasaki 2001: 45 saves in 69 appearances, 8.37 K/9, 1.49 BB/9, 0.81 HR/9
K-Rod 2008: 57 saves in 69 appearances, 10.2 K/9, 4.41 BB/9, .57 HR/9
The thing is, you can’t really do the same thing with Putz as K-Rod this year: the 2007 M’s went 88-74, and of those, you can tell they’re just not as close: 47 were one-run games, while 53 were blowouts (5 or more runs in either directions). 29% close, 33% blowout.
For the Angels this year with 146 games in the book, they’re running a much tighter distribution you can see even just looking at the outliers: 48 have been one run games (33%) and 37 (25%) blowouts.
I’m curious, though — I don’t have time to look at this right now, but if you went through all the game logs and looked for situations where McLaren could have found vulture saves for Putz, how high could you get his season total?

Apropos nothing beyond ex-M’s making good, but
It would be kind of amazing if the Phils go all the way and Moyer gets to pitch in a World Series at this point in his career.
Ive decided to actually watch the beginning of this game. This will be the first M’s game I’ve WATCHED since june or so, mostly because I’ve not been in M’s country (im now in LA, but whatever). Go RRS
Yuni bats second why?
Yuni!!!
A lot of plays at the plate in this game. Actual excitement.
It’s really exciting to watch Kenji swing at the first pitch. How many outs can one guy get in situations he has no business swinging (3-0, for example) in a year that he’s batting about .200.
Ichiro misplayed that ball.
Where is everyone? Have I missed an evacuation notice?
(tumbleweed blows through)
What can be agreed upon from this game: the awesomeness of one Adrian Beltre.
Yes.
It sucks to see him (and Ichiro) playing so hard for a team that’s this far out. Their effort feels almost misplaced.
I think that is the farthest Cairo has hit a ball.
Ever.
I just hope that Adrian isn’t doing any longterm damage to himself playing with his injuries.
Is it wrong that I amuse myself by imagining that faux-Jamaican doing the Muckleshoot Casino ads on the radio is Dave Sims doing an accent?
Yeah, I heard Beltre interviewed about his upcoming surgery. He’s playing in quite a bit of pain, and could just shut it down and get surgery now (which, after 4-5 months of recovery, would have him ready for spring training and the WBC. If he waits until October, he could push back his start time next spring.)
And yet he sounded as if not playing would really let down his teammates, and was really torn about ending his season now. So he’s going to keep playing until he makes up his mind. THAT strikes me as misplaced.
Man, I love me some Larry Stone. In tonight’s game post on the Times’ blog, he writes, re: a Riggleman quote that Kenji will be starting over Johnson because Riggleman doesn’t want him to feel like he’s fighting for his job:
Ball game.
well, personally, I was invited to a fabulous birthday dinner at the Old Country Buffet.
sigh. that outing the other day had led me to hope (silly, I know) that Batista might be semi-useful in the pen next season. ah me.
poor Shannon– two nights in a row, trying to compete with explosions and excited fans out there on the field.
oh, and after seeing that postgame interview? There is no way that Robb Quinlan is 6’1”.
Yes, we’re all moving to Oklahoma with the Sonics/Thunder!

“well, personally, I was invited to a fabulous birthday dinner at the Old Country Buffet.”
and you went?!
Did you run into Silva there?
well, when invited by a 15 year old, it is more of an honor…
no, thank goodness, or the ice-cream swirl machine would have been decimated.
