Game 155, Mariners at Athletics

Morrow v Gallagher. 1:05.

The horrible thing for me is that without looking, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you how many games in a row the team’s lost. I’ve accepted the losing without much complaint, and when I turn off the TV after each road loss, I think “Was Sims right– is that nine?” and then move on. But writing this, I realized that their longest winning streak was only four. How unbalanced. No wonder we’re so beaten down. Last year there was a 9-game, but they also put together sustained winning streaks we could get behind.

I wish Morrow the best of performances and a reasonable lineup behind him.

is Gallagher one of the “power righthanders” that Riggleman fears will overwhelm these batters?

    DMZ, exactly how I feel.

At the game today, posting over the Coliseum’s wi-fi, hehe. Had to come across the bridge to see Morrow in person. Looking good so far.

As bad as they’ve been the last few years, as this time of the year came, and the team played their last dozen games or so, I used to watch more intently, as baseball would soon be over.

This year, though, I have barely noticed. Today, I’m watching the Seahawks, and the Ms get seen only during timeouts. This season is just too ugly. Bring on the playoffs, so I can enjoy the game again.

    Just three comments?

I’m glad that Morrow is at least enjoying “the best of performances,” if not a reasonable lineup behind him.

Hey, Morrow is looking pretty decent. I look forward to seeing if he can keep it up at the start of next year.

  7. bigred on September 21st, 2008 2:35 pm

Hmmm, this might be one of the best M’s pitching performances of the year today and nobody is watching it.

  8. pumpkinhead on September 21st, 2008 2:36 pm

Morrow had a similar one a few starts ago. He’s pitched far better for far less $$ than Bedard. I find humor in that, albeit depressing humor. Smaller sample size, but still.

This has become the Bataan Death March of seasons, with the major difference being I don’t see how we get out of jail in only 4 years. But good for Morrow. Mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow and he’s looking like a pretty decent acorn.

Morrow is paid far less than any of Washburn, Batista, Silva, and Bedard, and has pitched better than any of them.

Only Felix has pitched better than Morrow so far.

SSS. But still. Was it really worth it to use him in relief to go for it all this year? Wouldn’t it have been more effective to just have him start in place of one of those guys?

  11. pygmalion on September 21st, 2008 2:43 pm

And by “one of those guys” I mean Silva…

  12. pumpkinhead on September 21st, 2008 2:46 pm

    Well, there goes that.

  13. pygmalion on September 21st, 2008 2:52 pm

I’m going to enjoy seeing Morrow start when he is better adjusted to going 100 pitches, and going through the lineup three or four times. And when he gets better control. (Remember Randy’s no-hitter? How many walks did he have, four or five? He became a true ace as soon as he figured out how to cut down on his walks).

I just tuned in a couple innings ago – I forgot that Morrow was pitching or I would have had it on earlier. I was just in time to hear frickin Blowers going on about how good it was he was “establishing his fastball early.”

  15. nvn8vbryce on September 21st, 2008 2:59 pm

Ya gotta admire our DH. 2 for 3. Strikeouts, that is.

I know we’ve got to get these young guys up, but sheesh. Strasburg never looked better to me.

  16. pygmalion on September 21st, 2008 3:02 pm

At least when Morrow is “establishing” his fastball, he is relying on his best pitch, and one that is far filthier than Felix’s FB.

  17. pumpkinhead on September 21st, 2008 3:06 pm

    Look at that! Runs!

  18. JerBear on September 21st, 2008 3:07 pm

Yeah, it’s definitely a good pitch – and his breaking pitches aren’t very consistent yet. But I still don’t like listening to a horrible announcer dispensing bad pitching advice.

  19. pygmalion on September 21st, 2008 3:14 pm

Yeah, bad announcers are like broken clocks, correct twice a day.

  20. JerBear on September 21st, 2008 3:15 pm

    Dammit Raul.

  21. JerBear on September 21st, 2008 3:19 pm

“correct twice a day” might be a bit generous in Blow’s case…

  22. JerBear on September 21st, 2008 3:21 pm

    Effing Batista.

  23. JMHawkins on September 21st, 2008 3:21 pm

Ahhh. The comfort of things that you can count on.

Dave N: “What a waste.” Indeed.

  24. pygmalion on September 21st, 2008 3:22 pm

Where was that young flamethrower we had in the ‘pen? D’oh.

  25. JerBear on September 21st, 2008 3:23 pm

Poor Brandon – faced with the futility of his impressive efforts, he looks like he might just cry.

  26. sad_loyal_fan on September 21st, 2008 3:34 pm

Perfect. Brandon gets a good start, and Batista serves up the loss.

  27. killer_ewok18 on September 21st, 2008 3:35 pm

Who wants to come with me on Tuesday to root for the 100th loss?

  28. itea on September 21st, 2008 4:28 pm

We need a couple National wins, but we’re looking really strong here. Hernandez/Morrow/Strasburg will be one of the best young starting trios in the history of baseball.

  29. argh on September 21st, 2008 5:10 pm

Was that ball over Raul’s head catchable by a decent (or excellent) left fielder playing wherever Raul was at contact?

  30. Joe C on September 21st, 2008 6:18 pm

I can only imagine what Morrow could have done this year if Bavasi hadn’t rushed him into the bullpen in 2007 to try to save his job. Morrow threw 113 pitches today and did pretty well after starting for only a short time. I’m impressed.

  31. Mariner Melee on September 21st, 2008 6:33 pm

I wonder if this establish the fastball nonsense is Stottlemyre’s doing.

  32. bdunn02 on September 21st, 2008 8:12 pm

I’m just hoping we can hold off the Nationals here down the stretch because they’re clearly gunning for us. Can we really keep up this pace? I think our best hope is the consistent offensive performance of our infield of LaHair, Valbuena, Hullett, and Cairo. And a steady diet of Miguel Batista relief appearances.

“If [this] is inevitable, lay back and enjoy it.” (Clayton Williams, fmr. governor of Texas).

  33. Live4Night on September 21st, 2008 10:48 pm

Was that ball over Raul’s head catchable by a decent (or excellent) left fielder playing wherever Raul was at contact?

Yes, in happened to him twice today. Any decent OF would’ve caught those.

I love Raul but he’s one of the worst defenders in baseball. He’s a DH. He needs to accept that.
