I was hoping to hear about Joh’s hand– instead I got a caller on the KJR post-game who told Puckett that the FO had no interest in winning, and he knew this because he has friends who’ve been told, privately, by members of the Mariners, that they are running this as a business.

maybe because it’s … a business?

This was followed by Nellie telling the caller that he had no doubts that the FO wants to win, but that they just have no idea how to go about it.

I first read that as “Do we want a steak…?” Funny thing is that, when I thought about it, I had a hard time deciding between a steak right now, or Strasburg.

“The Mariners are in a weird position, trying to win because of competitive pride,while everyone else — and no doubt themselves, as well — can see the benefit of finishing with the worst record. Just as an aside, I think that Stephen Strasburg is being deified perhaps a tad prematurely, and excessively (an exercise that I freely admit contributing to). He’s a great prospect about whom scouts rave, but he’s had one season as a college starter. Who’s to say if he’s truly going to be the savior of an organization? He might well be, but it’s a big step from striking out 23 against Utah, and dominating the Netherlands in the Olympics, to getting out the Boston Red Sox.
