Thanks

DMZ · September 28, 2008 at 6:57 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Hey, readers. If you’re reading this, thanks for sticking it out this horrible season. You’ve been great, and knowing (and having met many of) you all really has made it easier to find the time to keep writing, keep the site running, and all of that.

Hang around for the off-season: it should be a doozy, and we’re going to be all over it.

But more importantly– thanks.

and a big thank you to the authors, the mods, and to the other readers here …

FWIW, I just emailed KIRO to ask when they are kicking off their hot stove season :)

  2. naviomelo on September 28th, 2008 7:12 pm

Thank you Dave and Derek for another great year. Having your writing to look forward to every day made the season feel a lot shorter than our record would have suggested.

  3. Mariner Melee on September 28th, 2008 7:16 pm

I plan to be here for the off season.

  4. torx on September 28th, 2008 7:20 pm

    You’re welcome. :)

And a big thank you to you, Derek and Dave. You have been the bright spot for me in what was a dismal season.

I’m looking forward to more greatness in the offseason.

  5. Carson on September 28th, 2008 7:22 pm

I really don’t feel you owe us any thanks, as we aren’t really customers. We have been handed some of the best non biased team coverage in sports, at zero cost.

Seriously, thank you Dave and Derek. You have no clue how many opinions you’ve changed, ideas you’ve improved, and days you’ve made a little easier to swallow.

  6. MojoMark on September 28th, 2008 7:30 pm

You are welcome. I don’t comment much but I read every entry and love the analysis and passion you guys bring to the blog. I feel I know a lot more about baseball reading your work.

You and LL are the only bright spots I’ve enjoyed about the Mariners this year.

  7. scraps on September 28th, 2008 7:36 pm

Thank you. We get to take a few weeks off when it all becomes too much. You guys don’t have that option.

  8. Stuck-In-Chicago on September 28th, 2008 7:37 pm

Thanks from Chicago! This site makes my exile in the midwest a little more bearable.

  9. NickBob on September 28th, 2008 7:43 pm

    No, no, thank you!

Reliving the 80’s version of this club would have been utterly disheartening without the day to day insight your writing provides. As it is, it’s merely mostly disheartening. Well, Chuck Armstrong will have to retire sometime. Here’s to the next era of hope and disillusionment!

  10. terry on September 28th, 2008 7:59 pm

Hey, you can’t choose who you love. You can hate them for it at times though.

  11. Teej on September 28th, 2008 8:01 pm

You guys are awesome. As always, thank you for your knowledge and your dedication to spreading it around.

  12. Phightin Phils on September 28th, 2008 8:22 pm

Thank you! This terrible season helped me appreciate how important a smart FO is, and this site helped me understand what a smart FO is.

  13. JLP on September 28th, 2008 8:23 pm

Well, it was a shitty season. Anyone still around after witnessing such an atrocity is going to get the big payoff when the organization rebounds from this. I say “when” because it will happen.

Thanks to Dave and DMZ for supplying such a great site. Thanks to all of their helpers as well. And thanks to all the regulars for making such a great, insightful site of this place. I’m looking forward to this off-season.

  14. Bender on September 28th, 2008 8:27 pm

Thank you for keeping this site going. We need it and you provide a really great service to the fans.

    Thanks.

  15. rglenney on September 28th, 2008 8:30 pm

Thank you so much for your passion and dedication to keeping true M’s fans in the loop. As one of those fans, and stuck in Iowa, you make the Mariner part of my life bearable. Keep up the outstanding work!

  16. y-o-y on September 28th, 2008 8:45 pm

You guys do a great job. Thanks for another year of great analysis, commentary and humor.

As an aside, I was listening to iTunes on shuffle today and a chapter from “1995: A Season to Remember” came on. Those were the days. Made me a little sad – but at least I know I am not totally dead inside with respect to the M’s if they can still make me sad and not just apathetic.

  17. dsmiley on September 28th, 2008 8:51 pm

Thank you Dave and Derek! I can’t really say anything that others haven’t already said, but I do want to say just how much I appreciate all your hard work keeping this site up and writing articles/posts/comments that make me think.

    Thanks!

  18. Dave in Palo Alto on September 28th, 2008 8:54 pm

Big thanks to the hosts and mods. I marvel at the commitment you make to this site and the quality of the posts.

Things can only get better. Right? Right??

  19. abender20 on September 28th, 2008 8:54 pm

Thank you guys for the hard work, brilliant analysis, logical view of an organization that is otherwise experiencing a paucity of logic, and commitment.

Also, thanks to the mariners for winning the only game of the season that they should have lost.

  20. RadioGuy2k on September 28th, 2008 8:55 pm

D & D, you guys have made this season extremely fun for me, as bad as it was. Every time I read this board, I felt like I was watching the season unfold with a few friends.

You’ve gained me as a permanent fan, and I look forward to some good off season dirt. Thanks again!

  21. Sports on a Schtick on September 28th, 2008 8:58 pm

If the success of the Mariners is inversely related to the success of U.S.S. Mariner, then may the M’s suck for a long time.

    Wait.

  22. tgf on September 28th, 2008 9:06 pm

Big thanks to the hosts and mods. I marvel at the commitment you make to this site and the quality of the posts.

    Well said. Ditto.

  23. Colm on September 28th, 2008 9:18 pm

    No.
    Thank you.

  24. JerBear on September 28th, 2008 9:21 pm

Definitely a big thanks to the authors and mods – this site has been a continual bright spot in an otherwise horrendous season.

You guys have imparted an immense amount of knowledge to me and all your readers – you truly do run the best baseball blog on the interwebs. We appreciate it, so keep it up, and I will keep it tuned here for the post season!

  25. rcc on September 28th, 2008 9:21 pm

Once again you guys have made a lost season enjoyable. Your analysis and writing put you at the top of baseball blogs.

  26. wabbles on September 28th, 2008 9:22 pm

I’ll throw in my two cents as well to say thanks a helluva lot for not just making this season a little more bearable but explaining why it became so unbearable. I also want to thank, by extension, the collective readership with whom I was able to commiserate during this train wreck. Regarding teh off-season, I became well-known around my old job for announcing after the final out of the World Series every year the exact number of days until pitchers and catchers reported for the next season’s spring training (about Feb. 13). I have to hold off on that for now, but I am looking forward to the site’s coverage during the off-season. Thanks!

  27. ceepdublu on September 28th, 2008 9:23 pm

Your coverage of the team has made this season much more bearable — thanks for the work you and Dave did to (attempt to) make sense of the mess. I look forward to reading what you have to say over the offseason.

  28. Eastside Crank on September 28th, 2008 9:30 pm

Thanks for another awesome year of Mariner insights. I do not think I could follow the team without a place to go that tries to explain the insanity of the organization. Judging by L/A’s lame comments in the Seattle Times, I do not have high hopes for next year being any different. I know I will still be here trying to learn more about baseball and what is going on with Mariner baseball.

  29. DoesntCompute on September 28th, 2008 9:30 pm

Thank you for a great site. I have learned much from reading the material here for the past many years.

Unfortunately, USSM has made this year more miserable for me. Back when I was an ignorant fan, I would have just chocked this year up to bad luck because they were supposed to win it all. Now I know better because of this site. I know the true level of incompetence in the front office.

Keep it up guys, I’d rather be informed than ignorant any day.

  30. Karen on September 28th, 2008 10:05 pm

Thanks, guys, for attracting what has to be the smartest, coolest, least profane and most enjoyable bunch of blogger-fan-commenters to your blogsite.

I’m blown away just about every day at the humor and intelligence and high level of discussion (without the snobbish Ivory Tower SABRmetrics of certain other fan sites) that I find here, and I’m always amazed that I actually UNDERSTAND a lot of it!

  31. Replacementlvlposter on September 28th, 2008 10:42 pm

Thank you guys for still putting out quality content. Hopefully things will be looking up, big off season.

  32. gwangung on September 28th, 2008 11:17 pm

Joy shared is joy multiplied. Misery shared is misery divided.

This year, my misery was much less because of this site. May we have more joy that we can handle in the future…

  33. pgreyy on September 28th, 2008 11:34 pm

I’ve been to eight straight Fan Appreciation Days at Safeco Field. I’ve never gotten much more than a sniff of any of that much…much…more…

But coming here and reading “thanks” from the hard working authors of this site–when really, WE…the lucky readers of one of the best baseball websites anywhere…should be thanking YOU–makes me feel more appreciated than an autographed Rick Griffin ice pack EVER could.

And we’re counting on you, during the upcoming hot stove season, to keep this organization’s feet to the fire.

    peter greyy–seattle

PS–It’s somewhat ironic that the legendary Pioneer Square comedy club, Comedy Underground, has just now reopened in their new location after being forced to take the summer off… I guess now that this sad excuse for a baseball season is over, we can all laugh again.

If you guys are interested, I’d be happy to try to set up a night of baseball themed comedy there…get everyone together to laugh at our team…on purpose.

  34. Breadbaker on September 28th, 2008 11:39 pm

Thanks, Dave and Derek. It really can’t get much worse, can it?

  35. Omerta on September 28th, 2008 11:55 pm

    Thank you.

  36. JMHawkins on September 28th, 2008 11:57 pm

Thanks to the Authors, the Mods, and the regulars. The only way to make USSM a better place to gut out this season would have been if I could’ve gotten a Scotch-on-the-Rocks out of my USB port.

I’m definitely looking forward to this year’s Hot Stove. I pretty much dreaded last year’s, because it seemed fraught with peril and bereft of gains. This year, rock bottom is close enough that I no longer fear it, and figure the harder we hit, the higher we’ll bounce.

  37. Jeff Nye on September 28th, 2008 11:59 pm

I think I can speak on behalf of all the volunteer mods when I add our thanks to the regular readers, as well.

It ended up being a much easier task than we all thought it’d be when we first started, and we all cringed as the season continued to take a downhill turn, figuring comment quality would go along with it.

For the most part that hasn’t happened, and we appreciate it.

  38. enazario on September 29th, 2008 12:02 am

On behalf of this reader many thanks to USSMariner. It made this season bearable. Here’s hoping for better times.

  39. mln on September 29th, 2008 12:02 am

This is like the last day of school, where you’re signing yearbooks and wishing everybody well until next school year. And there’s almost a sense of sadness in the air.

    Nonsexual man-hugs for everyone!

  40. Benne on September 29th, 2008 12:36 am

I’ll echo the many thanks for Dave and Derek for keeping the site enjoyable even during a miserable season, and thank you fellow readers. Whether it’s an insightful discussion on the future of Erik Bedard, or witty quips about Carlos Silva’s girth, the comments have always been entertaining to read and make this site all the more worthwhile. You people are true fans.

Let us raise a glass and toast the end of 2008. May this upcoming winter be a fruitful one, and let us hope for greener pastures in 2009. Salu!

Once again, thank you all for continuing to make USS Mariner the best team-oriented blog on the planet.

As a final note, my real name is Jon Benne, Bellingham resident. Next time anyone here comes up to Bellingham, the beer is on me.

  41. DaveValleDrinkNight on September 29th, 2008 1:10 am

    What a terrible year,

I’ve been a life long Mariners fan(born in 1977) and still can’t wait to root for these R-Tards next year. Luckily, for me, my Family is all from Milwaukee so I’ve also been a secondary Brewer’s fan. Quick note, (County Stadium was so much more fun than Miller Park).

As bad as the M’s tanked it this year, I had a whole lotta joy watching Sabathia’s performance today. A little reminiscant of ‘95 for us.

Can’t wait to bitch and gripe with everybody about the Club’s decisions again for next year.

See you all in a month or so.

  42. shirts on September 29th, 2008 3:12 am

Dave and Derek, thank you for all you do. There should be plenty of good stuff this off-season and I’m looking forward to it.

  43. pinball1973 on September 29th, 2008 4:13 am

I promised not to watch much of this after the Bedard trade (and I didn’t, except for Ichiro highlights) or trouble the threads here with angry comments (also largely successfully), but I did read pretty much everything said here and greatly enjoyed and appreciated it.
Thanks to our USSM leaders and the very many fine, funny, intelligent commentors.

  44. Five Number Ones on September 29th, 2008 4:34 am

Thank you guys for keeping me interested in the team I grew up with. You have the ability to present objective, reasoned arguments with clarity and energy that makes them easily and enjoyably readable. I’m hoping that this offseason will be a productive one, both for the Mariner organization and USS Mariner.

  45. davepaisley on September 29th, 2008 5:52 am

Awesome job, guys. The spirit of asbsm lives on :)

And what a brilliant year for me to give up the season tickets. If only thousands more would join me this coming season.

For anyone with season tickets – even if you plan on keeping them, make the team sweat every single renewal (and believe me, they chased me well into May to renew, so it’s not like you’ll be losing out). Losing ticket sales, and especially that nice, up-front season-ticket money is the only thing that will continue to grab their attention.

  46. jimmylauderdale on September 29th, 2008 5:59 am

I am infinitely more excited about this offseason than I was this past season and this site has a lot to do with that. I look forward to the insight from Derek, Dave and everyone else here as this team searches for a GM, manager, and players. Should make for some great, and hopefully positive, discussion.

  47. built2crash on September 29th, 2008 6:19 am

thanks Dave and Derek for everything. USSMARINER is the fist place I go every morning and its because of you guys.

Dave – good luck with the wedding.

  48. smb on September 29th, 2008 8:06 am

End of season donation on the way…definitely would not have made it through the season without this site.

A few of my ussm highlights for the year…

    -portals/cake
-consistent line of rational thought on the Bedard trade (while print media swung on a giant pendulum of hypocrisy from “love it” to “hate it,” ultimately landing on the “Bedard is a terrible person and an even worse interview” bandwagon
-coverage of the end of the Bavasi era
-coverage of Niehaus to the Hall
    -Yamauchi’s entrance music
-standing up for Ichiro/Beltre and explaining why it makes no sense to trade them
-eviscerating Beaver and Burger for being bad teammates and even worse pitchers
-pop-ins by Jonah Keri, one of my favorite national sports writers

So many more but it’s early and I find it painful to think too hard about all that we M’s fans went through this season.

Thanks Derek and Dave for all your hard work! Welcome, Conor!

Now let’s bring on Ng or whomever it’s gonna be and let them start patching the splintered hull.

  49. bakomariner on September 29th, 2008 8:16 am

Thanks to everyone that works on or reads USSMariner…

  50. zzyzx on September 29th, 2008 8:22 am

Thank you. It is USS Mariner that inspired me to randomly turn on Morrow’s near no hit game. That made the season worthwhile by itself.

  51. Steve T on September 29th, 2008 8:42 am

Of all the disappointments of this godforsaken team, the most bitter was having to tell the customs broker that I wanted to abandon my shipment of one six-pack of SP Lager to US Customs, because I didn’t want to pay $150 on a probably-unsuccessful effort to get it released. That was going to be my bitter celebration of a garbage season by the WORST BASEBALL TEAM OF ALL TIME.

Yes, plenty of others have lost more games, but none did it with a deeper absence of panache.

But thank you, Derek, and thank you, Dave. Without USSM this year would have been unbearable.

  52. great gonzalez on September 29th, 2008 10:56 am

    Thanks USSM.

  53. The Ghost of Spike Owen on September 29th, 2008 1:34 pm

    Thanks Derek and Dave.

We’re all gonna get through this thing. I don’t know how, but we are.

    Keep the faith everybody.

  54. Mustard on September 30th, 2008 7:02 am

Thank you all for getting me through every workday, even if it was shitty news….it gave me something to talk to other people about and gather their opinions as well. Hard to find Mariners fans when you live in Ontario, Canada.
Keep up the great work, and hope to make it out to Seattle next year for a feed or something.
