Reading those articles msb linked, I don't think Bernazard has any business being the GM of a major league baseball team.

Good point about Ng. Maybe on account of sweeping the Cubs there was enough downtime before the NLCS starts Thursday to fit her in.

I wonder if, aside from her, they are even looking at candidates from the franchises still playing. Gillick's been pretty much ruled out. Gerry Hunsicker? But the list so far is entirely prospective first-time GMs, not retreads.

It's hard to avoid a feeling of growing dismay that the Mariners seem to be looking for the 'safest' GM Candidate.

No sir-ee. We don't want to rock this boat. Oh no. We want someone as well steeped as we can imagine in conventional baseball wisdom.

And down in in SoDo the twin golems of ignorance and cowardice converge once again to destroy my hopes for a better future.

Bernazard is part of the Mets' deep connections in Latin America, and also is viewed as a big part of the push to get Willie Randolph fired. Opinions may differ on Randolph's merits as a manager, but his firing was certainly abysmally handled. On the other hand, the execution may not really be something we should hold Bernazard responsible for, despite the politics of the situation.

What I'd be most concerned about is that in his track record as VP of Player Development, Bernazard represents the least change from the worst failings of the Bavasi regime. Aggressive promotion of prospects, then unloading them in bulk to plug holes on the major league roster, in particular. That the Santana trade was a better bargain than the Bedard swap, and has had better results, still doesn't mean that's the kind of approach the Mariners should want right now.
