Voting Update (and a baseball note)

Dave · November 10, 2008 at 6:19 am · Filed Under Mariners

So, for those who didn’t read the blog over the weekend (or don’t scroll down past the first post), I got nominated for a $10,000 scholarship that will be decided by public vote. I’m currently in the lead, but there’s a few blogs on the list with more traffic than us, and since the vote’s open for another 10 days, this thing is far from over. So, if you haven’t, go vote. It takes a couple of mouse clicks. You’ll be done in 10 seconds. I really appreciate it.

Also, on a baseball note, Brad Nelson (whom I’ve been advocating picking up in a trade for months) is absolutely tearing up the Dominican Winter League, hitting .304/.381/.804 in 17 games. He’d be a perfect fit as a young 1B with upside, he has no future in Milwaukee, and he was drafted by Zduriencik – it’s the biggest no brainer trade of all time. Let’s make this happen, okay?

Interested to note that that dude Snively, who seemed to think he had it in the bag, is now running fourth; Thomas Peters, whom I would have figured to pull the most support of your competitors, is in second.

My vote is in, Dave. Good luck!

What do you think it would take to pry Nelson away from the Crew?

There’s a really sweet and lovely comment from a user CRV (or something like that) calling out Dave for shameless self-promotion (LOL), essentially being a jerk (LOL), making flimsy baseball arguments based on inaccurate statistics (LOL!!), and being “somewhat of a fraud according to local sources” (ZOMG LOL!).

Gave me a good chuckle anyway…I wonder which guy it was whose “TRADE ICHIRO HE IS JAPINEEZ AND BAD FOR TEAM CHEMISTRY” argument didn’t go over well here…and who subsequently calls out the “100 or so sheep at his site” that will come and stack the deck in his favor with their votes. Should also note that his comment is there as one negative to about every 10-15 positive or complementary ones I saw in three minutes of browsing.

As for online voting, there is no such thing as an online voting poll that is not about self-promotion (if you don’t post about it you will have 5 votes like some of the candidates on there). They are also notoriously easy to cheat on, as most are IP/cookie based as far as limiting people to one vote. They’re usually a joke, so hopefully they have closed the cheating loopholes and no one will magicaally come up with 5000 votes overnight to beat Dave.

You deserve this scholarship, Dave! Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination!!

Well if Zduriencik is going to pluck Nelson from the Brewers to play first base, Zduriencik might as well solve the Ms DH dilemma by plucking Matt Gamel from the Brewers too.

I tried voting more than once to help Dave, but it wouldn’t let me.

Although I did vote for him at my home and work computers.

Gonna use my girlfriend’s laptop and desktop next.

You’re getting four votes from me Dave!

There are some bitter people over there at that voting site’s comments section.

I’d further speculate that some of them might be having a disappointment hangover from Nov. 4th, but that would be unfair… 😛

Meh, probably some random xenophobic sicko…sad to say, a few of them have been coming out of the woodwork lately…

But you go, Dave…we’re all behind ya!

There are some bitter people over there at that voting site’s comments section.

Some tactics are meant to turn out the vote for your guy while others are meant to suppress the vote for the other guy. Going negative isn’t meant to rationally convince. It’s meant to suppress the votes of those who don’t agree with you.

  9. The Ancient Mariner on November 10th, 2008 8:51 am

Actually, Karen, given that the bitter folks over there all appear to be MIT types, that would seem to be unlikely . . .

  10. MissoulaMarinerFan on November 10th, 2008 8:52 am

I don’t comment much, but I would just like to say, that USS Mariner Rocks. Thanks for your hard work! My vote is in! Woot! for shameless self-promotion! Good luck!

oh, I think we have some locals, as well– some of the phrases seem awfully reminiscent of the local newspapers’ blog-comment sections

    Dave,
What is your take on Josh Kroeger? He is in the Venezuela Winter League hitting .400/.495/.763 in 21 games.

  13. Faux on November 10th, 2008 9:15 am

I’d watch out, you’ve got PZ Myers doing link work for Brian Switzer. He did a post over the weekend, so if that doesn’t get good response, you can probably expect a repost mid-week for all the people that read him at work.

  14. FauxLife on November 10th, 2008 9:21 am

I voted for you Dave. It’s the least I can do for all of the time you’ve devoted to this great blog. Mariner fans are lucky to have you.

  15. Beniitec on November 10th, 2008 9:29 am

Some of you may think people voted more than once. Me? Well I think there’s a lot more readers than are registered here. Perhaps folks like Gillick, Bavasi, Lincoln, Armstrong, former Mariners, press, etc are voting for you. Heck, even Mr. Geoff Baker put in a shameless plug for you on his blog in the Seattle Times. I think most of the votes you’re getting are legit. Congrats Dave. It’s well deserved.

  16. msb on November 10th, 2008 9:33 am

another baseball note– Hickey says Brad Mills is interviewing today for the field manager job

  17. smb on November 10th, 2008 9:46 am

    msb,

I got the same impression. Seems very much along the lines of someone who doesn’t appreciate seeing Jim Moore’s roster construction ideas summarily dismissed, or Geoff Baker’s platonic crush on Carlos Silva made fun of by guys who aren’t even on a corporate payroll as real journalists!

My favorite part is the always obligatory reference to sycophantic commenters at ussmariner. God forbid some part of the fanbase doesn’t need or want all of their team coverage (news and analysis) to be expressly approved by the club’s management, and likes to see bad roster moves called what they are by people who’s baseball analysis pedigree is a little more substantive than a journalism degree and a lifelong love of the game.

I’d really rather everyone not make negative comments about the other blogs in the competition. We all have our niches, and I don’t think it serves anyone well to get into the downsides of each others sites.

So, I’ve deleted the previous comments about other blogs, and will continue to do so. Feel free to compliment them here, but not critique them. Thanks.

Yeah, PZ’s noted for poll swamping…it’s a side hobby of his, stemming from his twitting creationists and the religious….

However, I do read Brian Switzer’s blog and he’s a pretty decent read, and the sort of person you’d be honored to vie with….

  20. Colm on November 10th, 2008 10:32 am

    Oookay, I’ll be nicer.

Vote for David Cameron. He’s better than those other bloggers!

  21. Typical Idiot Fan on November 10th, 2008 11:14 am

Pretty cool move of Geoff Baker to promote this on his blog. Maybe we can get help from Larrys LaRue and Stone as well.

Dave, here’s a chance for me to ask you “what the heck?”… winter ball stats… meaningful or meaningless? Let’s make up our minds here. I think we already know that Brad Nelson’s a decent player and worth snagging, but we shouldn’t really be convinced because of DWL numbers, should we?

  22. The Ancient Mariner on November 10th, 2008 11:28 am

msb/smb: Yeah, but those folks’ opposition needs no broader explanation.

  23. vin on November 10th, 2008 11:57 am

Well now that you’re on Deadspin now, it’s all over. Congratulations Dave.

Long time reader.I have left only a few replys before, but I just wanted to say good luck Dave. Thanks for all the hard work and excellent information. You made this season survivable.

  26. Colm on November 10th, 2008 12:45 pm

Brad Nelson is a bit old to be considered a true prospect, but he’s a really good Steadicam operator.

    Maybe I’m a bit confused…

  27. Westside guy on November 10th, 2008 1:03 pm

Hey, Rob Neyer over at ESPN.com just plugged your scholarship bid… 😀

  28. DoesntCompute on November 10th, 2008 1:18 pm

Go Dave… best blog on the web.

  29. Nuss on November 10th, 2008 2:49 pm

I just put a post up on my site to encourage my readers to vote. Hope it helps — you deserve it.

  30. BillyJive on November 10th, 2008 3:50 pm

Any ideas on what we would have to give up to pry Nelson away from the Brew Crew?

  31. Evan on November 10th, 2008 4:05 pm

Rob Neyer over at ESPN.com just plugged your scholarship bid.

That’s probably a high profile endorsement than any of your competitors will get.

  32. Colm on November 10th, 2008 4:30 pm

    I dunno
Let’s see if Thomas Peters enlists Opus Dei

  33. DMZ on November 10th, 2008 4:41 pm

Daily Kos plugged one of the others today. And if you think PZ Myers is good at pushing online polls in one direction or another…

  34. sympathetic oriolesfan on November 10th, 2008 8:24 pm

Happy to vote for you Dave.. This is the only baseball blog I read consistently, and I don’t root for the Mariners! Good luck, you deserve it!
