More defensive statistical updates from Baseball Musings:
First basemen: Sexson not at the bottom! But still not good. Cairo also below-average.
Leftfielders: Ibanez near the bottom… but not at the bottom! Pat Burrell anchors the list. The biggest shocker for me was seeing Adam Dunn up around average.
PMR has had enough screwy results that I’m beginning to wonder if Pinto made some errors in his adjustments. There are just too many things that don’t reflect reality in the numbers this year.
Sexson (96.91 combined between SEA and NYY) and Cairo (98.93) combined for 70% of the total innings at 1B by the Mariners this year. Yet overall the Mariners ranked 9th in baseball at 102.08.
Lahair (not listed by Pinto) contributed another 19%, so that those three represent 89% of total innings at 1B for the Mariners 2008 season. Of course LaHair couldn’t have rescued the overall performance of the club in 273 innings even if were a superb defender (which he obviously is not). I also doubt that Sexson was a great defender with the Mariners then suddenly turned atrocious with NYY so as to keep the Mariners above average while trashing his individual numbers.
Or perhaps there might be something wrong with Pinto’s numbers?
It’s hilarious how valueless Miguel Cairo is, yet he keeps getting contracts.
Was anyone complaining about Richie’s glove? I don’t remember hearing any grumbling regarding his defense – but maybe it was all the yelling about his inability to hit that drowned it out.
I’d think being within shouting distance of 7 feet tall would tend to help a first baseman’s defensive rating…

Just everybody here, and every other site where people paid attention. LookoutLanding even had an animated GIF to depict Richie’s defensive acumen: it was a floor lamp, with a glove, that performed its fielding by falling over.
But he is so tall and…local.

That’s what I’ve been thinking looking at the results for the positions. Cust is at about league average for LFers, in part time of course.

Coming into the site, there is a presumption that commenters will investigate previous topics and be familiar with the current status of discussion of a topic. There is little value from continuing to rehash items that have been previously discussed thoroughly. Richie Sexson’s defensive limitations have been thoroughly reviewed in significant detail, including the extent to which his stature might (or might not) contribute to his defensive value.
We really do welcome new members to the community, but if you are not familiar with the current status of discussion on a topic you must “do your homework” on a topic before posting. If you fail to do so and post anyway, well …..
FWIW, the orientation doesn’t cover all the beaten-to-death topics around here; the myth that Richie’s height makes him a good fielder at 1B is one which isn’t.
Westside guy, here’s the short version: the fact that Richie’s height and long arms enable him to catch balls that would go over other 1Bs’ heads doesn’t make up for the fact that his height and inflexibility means that he can’t get down for low throws and grounders that other 1Bs would get to — let alone for the fact that he doesn’t cover as much ground as other 1Bs, and thus balls get by him to the right and the left that they would get to, despite his long arms.
