So Much For Affeldt

One of the guys I wanted the M’s to go after this winter was Jeremy Affeldt, who is probably the most underrated relief pitcher in the game. He signed a two year deal with the Giants today.

Oh well.

    There’s always Horacio Ramirez.

I have a feeling this is going to be a reoccuring theme of free agents signing with other teams.

His ’08 was a wild departure from his career to date.

Why are you so certain that he’ll repeat it?

    wild departure

I’m not sure that’s the right choice of words to describe his performance last year.

My thoughts on Affeldt: velocity spike + improved command + always underrated = good pitcher.

He would have been a good signing, but it’s not the end of the world…the ‘pen is really the least of the Ms’ problems…

Substitute “dramatic” for “wild”… I like alliteration anyway, anyhow.

One of the problems we have as mere onlookers is that we don’t have a real clue what “the plan” is for 2008. Zulu has been somewhat milquetoast about whether they’re going to try to compete now or ten years from now. Obviouisly, we shouldn’t get frustrated over something like this. For all we know, “the plan” is a good one and they have some good ideas.

How common is it for a 29 yo pitcher to add 2 mph on to his fastball when the velocity isn’t due to a change in role?

This topic (affeldt) also got it’s own thread on Tango’s blog.

    “There’s always Horacio Ramirez.”
Dunno if you’ve ever toured Safeco Field during FanFest, but the stadium has all the doorsteps it needs, which would leave HoRam without a defined role on a team which devoutly believes in roles.
Yeah, it’s a little early to see Z-man’s cards or what direction or plan he has but it’s mid-November, he’s got to start showing his hand soon. Early indications are 2002-type tweaking versus 2005-overhaul-omg-we’ve-gotta-turn-this-around-now.

Hey just wondering if you guys were planning on doing any more Strasburg alternatives. I would love to see a couple on the top HS talents such as Tate and Purke.

‘Giants make good move on underpriced reliever.’

My world view is shattered. Up is down, black is white. Reality has come unmoored.

Shouldn’t we really be more concerned about the black holes at 1B, DH, OF, SS, and the triumvirate of Silva, Washburn, and Batista? I would rather roll the dice with some league minimum guys in the pen and use every penny we have to get quality players in the lineup.

I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t enjoy watching Bryan LaHair play first for 140 games next year, no matter who is in the bullpen.

This is the time of year GM’s shape the team for spring, so far we have scouts, an assistant to the GM a data collection team, and almost a coach with probably no major league experience.

MLB rumor mills doesn’t even tie us to any free agents,,,,,,,

    where is the hope?

Don’t be surprised if this is just the first of several times the Giants cut off the Mariners. They’re just as desperately bad.

‘Giants make good move on underpriced reliever.’
