Tuesday vote-mongering: a new chance

DMZ · November 18, 2008 at 12:08 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Hey all, I know I’ve been pushing everyone to vote Dave Cameron, but it would make me feel great to see him win in recognition of all his long-time efforts here.

Now’s your chance: it looks like they’ve reset the IP locking, so if you were trying to vote from work, and someone beat you to it, you can go for it. And if you already voted… well, you have the opportunity to make your voice count twice. Try here.

Update: your mileage may vary

Not letting me vote, even with cleared cookies and using a couple of proxies.

Not letting me vote, even with cleared cookies and using a couple of proxies.

Me either, at least from work. I’ll try when I get home though!

    Jimmie

  3. abender20 on November 18th, 2008 12:27 pm

i too am having issues voting , and this should be a unique IP address.

  4. DMZ on November 18th, 2008 12:29 pm

    Bahhhhhhhhh!!

  5. abender20 on November 18th, 2008 12:31 pm

I just had a friend try it from his office in Phoenix, and that too isn’t working. Apparently the site is malfunctioning. THIS MUST BE FIXED SO WE CAN BALLOT BOX STUFF FOR DAVE.

  6. oar68 on November 18th, 2008 12:31 pm

Can we have a separate blog site for awards voting and stick to baseball?

  7. DMZ on November 18th, 2008 12:33 pm

As a proportion of all posts, awards voting is 0%

  8. JerBear on November 18th, 2008 12:35 pm

It didn’t let me vote at first – but I poked around on the site and found the voting interface again….

    VOTE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Evan on November 18th, 2008 12:40 pm

    That’s huge.

  10. Sports on a Schtick on November 18th, 2008 12:41 pm

    Excellent work JerBear.

  11. galaxieboi on November 18th, 2008 12:44 pm

    Bitchin’. I’m so on it.

  12. abender20 on November 18th, 2008 12:44 pm

It for some reason is letting me vote on repeat, so in honor of the amazing work USSM has provided, I will now vote repeatedly for as long as I can tolerate it.

  13. lutemama on November 18th, 2008 12:46 pm

I had to delete the cookie on my computer, delete my history, and refresh the page a few times but finally was able to vote again! We must stuff the ballot box for Dave!

  14. DMZ on November 18th, 2008 12:46 pm

Are you sure? It may be taking your vote and not counting it.

  15. Dave on November 18th, 2008 12:47 pm

Please don’t game the poll. I don’t want to win that way.

  16. abender20 on November 18th, 2008 12:47 pm

well apparently it lets you go through the mechanism of voting infinitely, and someone else was voting corresponding with my refresh so that I thought I was getting more votes in. There will be no ballot box stuffing. Your integrity is safe.

  17. DMZ on November 18th, 2008 12:48 pm

    Even weirder…
The results don’t change but if you vote and look at the results, they’re different.

  18. abender20 on November 18th, 2008 12:51 pm

Apparently not all sites are monitored and scrutinized like USSM. All the more reason for Dave to catch a scholarship.

  19. lutemama on November 18th, 2008 12:54 pm

Actually I guess I’m not sure. Now I see that the numbers haven’t gone up since I’ve voted. I would hate to see anyone other than “our” Dave get this.

  20. galaxieboi on November 18th, 2008 12:54 pm

Yeah, if I were say…vote more than once, it doesn’t change.

  21. Mike G. on November 18th, 2008 12:58 pm

It took one of my votes just now, the second one it’s counted overall from me. But as mentioned every subsequent vote is not moving the total anymore.

  22. jimmylauderdale on November 18th, 2008 1:01 pm

How has David Mauro taken the lead by 600 or so??? Last I checked he was no where near Dave!

  23. johndango on November 18th, 2008 1:08 pm

Well. I’ve voted twice on my work computer, twice on my home computer, and twice on my cell phone. Good luck. You’re still a little behind… but you never know.

  24. msb on November 18th, 2008 1:10 pm

well, among other things, he’s posted yet another diary asking for more votes today. I was so hoping Ruby would check back with us, so I could ask her about this.

  25. jimmylauderdale on November 18th, 2008 1:10 pm

Ok, I checked again and it was almost a 400 vote lead. I must have looked at it wrong. But, still, how did that happen?

  26. galaxieboi on November 18th, 2008 1:11 pm

Bah, I poked around Mauro’s ‘blog’. I respect the guy’s politics. I’m a life long bomb-throwing Bolshevik and to be a Dem in Texas has to suck, but I’m not terribly impressed.

Dave (and Derek!) are helping to revolutionize how baseball in general and stats in particular are viewed. I know that’s not as sexy as taking the Facist Party of Texas, but the competition shouldn’t be close. Awesome for Mauro, I salute him. But he shouldn’t win this, IMHO.

  27. nickwest1976 on November 18th, 2008 1:28 pm

I voted last week and tried again but it won’t let me.

    Best of luck Dave!!!

  28. wabbles on November 18th, 2008 1:28 pm

Does covering a team as infuriating and exasperating as the M’s get Dave any extra credit/votes? I would think explaining Jarrod Washburn and his contract is worth a couple of extra votes at least.

  29. abender20 on November 18th, 2008 1:40 pm

Lost in all of this, poor Justin Varner :(

    Go Dave.

  30. fiftysix on November 18th, 2008 2:32 pm

Dave Mauro got a link from Daily Kos, which (given the size of their readership) I imagine is principally responsible for his huge increase in votes. But it seems to me that all’s fair in viral-blog-voting based scholarship handouts.

  31. DMZ on November 18th, 2008 2:42 pm

    Many links.

  32. DMZ on November 18th, 2008 2:48 pm

Though clearly today’s endorsement from the great Kos himself was particularly huge.

  33. JLP on November 18th, 2008 2:59 pm

    [ot]

  34. msb on November 18th, 2008 3:03 pm

I believe this is the chronology:

David C. posts on his blog that he has been told he is a finalist for the scholarship and would appreciate votes from his readers.

David M. posts on his blog that he has been told he is a finalist for the scholarship and would appreciate votes from his readers.

Regular readers of David C’s blog mention his scholarship chance on their own blogs. These include Geoff Baker of the Times and Rob Neyer of ESPN, who post brief comments about his opportunity on their respective blog pages– Baker made a point to encourage the readers to look at all the nominated blogs, and vote for the one they thought best. These were only posted once.

Regular readers of David M’s blog mention his scholarship chance on their own blogs. David M. also emails Kos about the scholarship, and over the next week puts up five diaries of his own, including one which asks the readers of Kos to ’smurf’ the vote for him. As of today, about 30 different diaries and mentions in the open threads are put up for him, on a site that generally gets about a million hits per day.

  35. sstadnicki on November 18th, 2008 3:17 pm

Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but from the original announcement:

Our panel of judges will decide on 10 finalists and public voting will be enabled the morning of November 3rd. Voting will be closed on November 17th 2008. During this time, check our blog for announcements, updates, finalists, and voting information.

I don’t see anything since then suggesting that voting has been extended; it may be that nothing done today makes any difference at all.

On a side note, with no disrespect intended to Dave and regardless of who wins, am I the only one who thinks choosing a $10,000 scholarship winner based on nothing but an Internet popularity contest is an even worse selection process than the MVP awards?

  36. DMZ on November 18th, 2008 3:26 pm

    They opened voting late.

And yes, we’ve commented on this before, it’s a terrible, terrible way to pick it.

  37. pensive on November 18th, 2008 3:55 pm

Is it wrong for DMZ and Dave to have links on their other sites? As I didn’t notice any.

Many Months ago a poster during the more liberal times mentioned Kingdom of Loathing as interesting during the dismal times. Have been stuck there for 18 Months.

I wonder if they would allow a link? I don’t know how and only adventure as solitary pastime.

There are so many bright minds and persons of much knowledge that (not me) that it is difficult to comprehend with the support revealed Dave is behind.

A person who would rather have donations go to an overly needy Country than have a coffee or something for himself, just simply deserves this.

  38. msb on November 18th, 2008 4:02 pm

Is it wrong for DMZ and Dave to have links on their other sites? As I didn’t notice any.

only in the mind of one diarist at Kos.

  39. Steve Nelson on November 18th, 2008 4:08 pm

to vote again – click here: Try here. That should open a page showing the voting results so far. At the top of the page, click on the “Vote for the winner …” link.

Close your browser, reopen and repeat as often as needed. Think of it is your little contribution to fighting the machine that is the Daily Kos.

  40. JerBear on November 18th, 2008 4:49 pm

Steve’s correct – it looks like they keep changing the url for the actual voting interface… So keep poking around and keep trying.

Dave’s only down by about 500 votes. Considering what he’s up against, that’s pretty impressive. And considering he has almost 11,000 overall, I think closing the gap is quite possible.

    Keep it up!

  41. msb on November 18th, 2008 7:27 pm

not anymore. there appears to be some unsightly leaps forward in the numbers for one Mr Mauro.

  42. robrtx on November 18th, 2008 7:30 pm

I just wanted to jump in and say that I resent being called part of a “mob” just voting in this thing for my political beliefs if I vote for your competitor, David Mauro.

I am a Texan in exile living in another state, and Mauro’s blog on Texas politics is by far the best on I am aware of for that purpose. The EV analysis on his site this election was the ONLY source for information that detailed compiled, and their attention to Texas state-level politics is incredibly strong. Mauro’s blog serves an actual public-service as well, as opposed to being an enthusiast site. There is nothing wrong with sport/hobby sites (I frequent them regularly), but Mauro’s blog is about positive change in the world as well.

  43. robrtx on November 18th, 2008 7:33 pm

    JerBear

    A: that is dishonest

B: You think you are multiple voting, but it does not work. There are complicated ways you could do this with proxies and hidden IP’s, but that would also be:

    C:Also dishonest

  44. DMZ on November 18th, 2008 9:29 pm

Proxies… oh yeah, I remember that in one of the earlier diaries on Kos. I guess that worked out.

I don’t at all think people who support Mauro are mob members, but it’s also clear that Dave’s right that the voting has been on ideology and not merit: appeals on Mauro’s own site didn’t get him votes, but the constant Kos diaries and front-page endorsements all net him a ton.

Do you really believe that those 10k of votes he gets from Kos love are all people who were all sitting around thinking “I sure do love that Burnt Orange site, and I read about this over there…. but I wish someone at Daily Kos would encourage me to vote. Then I’d go do it.”

  45. Jeff Nye on November 18th, 2008 9:49 pm

Mauro’s blog serves an actual public-service as well, as opposed to being an enthusiast site. There is nothing wrong with sport/hobby sites (I frequent them regularly), but Mauro’s blog is about positive change in the world as well.

Well, shoot, I’m glad to hear you don’t think there’s anything “wrong” with all the time and effort Dave and the other authors have put into this site over the years.

It’s a shame that USSM can’t provide a “public service”, though, since that is clearly why people are voting for Mauro. The constant references on DailyKOS about “helping one of US get through college” couldn’t have anything to do with it.

  46. DMZ on November 18th, 2008 10:11 pm

Yes. We’ve done no public service of any kind here. It’s true. We’re all about negative change in the world.

  47. msb on November 18th, 2008 10:28 pm

Proxies… oh yeah, I remember that in one of the earlier diaries on Kos. I guess that worked out.

right– proxies. and smurfing. and multiple voting and resetting browsers. I knew I’d read about those somewhere.

Yes. We’ve done no public service of any kind here. It’s true. We’re all about negative change in the world.

    I’ve noticed that. You slackers.

  48. jordan on November 18th, 2008 10:52 pm

    12000 to 11,666…. cmon guys!

  49. DMZ on November 18th, 2008 11:12 pm

    066, no?

  50. JerBear on November 19th, 2008 9:00 am

Yeah, as I mentioned before, the fact that Dave has been able to keep it so tight with his simple fan-base support is an overwhelming testament to the quality of this site and how much we appreciate you guys’ work (you too, Derek.)

BTW, I was simply encouraging people who were never even able to get to the voting interface to keep trying. But yes, I know there are plenty of dishonest efforts going on out there…some even encouraged by…certain blogs…*cough* *cough*

And I know I’m in the minority here with my political beliefs, but I personally don’t believe in the kind of “positive change” and “public service” that Mauro provides, so….that argument means nothing to me. I’m voting for Dave because I appreciate the merits of his blogging work, not because I agree with (or even care to know) his political ideology.

  51. Seattle-Kurt on November 19th, 2008 10:30 am

I’ve posted the link around to as many Mariner message boards as I can find, including Myspace, Yahoo, MLB, ESPN and CNNSI. Unfortunately, we don’t have a one-stop million-hit-a-day site like Kos that will help. I will keep trying, as I truly believe David’s work and content far outshines what I’ve seen at Burnt Orange…which is not to demean what Mauro does, but let’s face it, targeting the content of USSM as almost being irrelevant because it’s not dealing with politics is pretty underhanded.

I can say this, if *I* were on the judges panel that chose the finalist, I would be pretty upset at the way the winner is chosen.

  52. robrtx on November 19th, 2008 1:47 pm

A quick response to the general freak out I accidentally caused: I read both blogs (I have a friend from college who plays for the Mariners). I am not saying anything negative about this site by saying that I think positively of what Mauro is trying to do on his. By observing that one site relates to events that change the lives of millions of people through the political process and the other site is about a great game, I am not saying that there is anything wrong with this site. The observation stands, but I love the Mariners. Maybe some people see politics as a game too, but I think the last 8 years should have dissuaded anyone from that opinion by now. I’m glad to hear that you guys are passionate about this site though. May the best site win.

  53. Seattle-Kurt on November 19th, 2008 2:08 pm

    Robrtx

This scholarship isn’t based on the Theme or importance of the BLOG itself, but of the person nominated who writes for the blog. Under your basis, if a Blog is about World Hunger (a topic we can all agree is VERY important), but the Blogger just isn’t that great a writer, he should get your vote over pretty much ANYTHING.

This scholarship isn’t about any SITE, robrtx…it’s about the writing.

  54. JLP on November 20th, 2008 11:16 am

Posted a thread over at http://www.conquerclub.com

This site really has a lot of users, and should be willing to help out. I just wish I had thought of this sooner.
