Wash gets to pitch with Lahair in LF and Morse at 3B. That should be fun.

  2. Evan on March 6th, 2009 10:01 am

Let’s see if he can keep his ERA under Batista’s (54.00) so far.

  3. bakomariner on March 6th, 2009 10:03 am

I think (hope) Batista will get the can before they break camp…he’s about as done as you can be…

The Phillies took a huge hit on money by releasing Eaton; Z. should do the same thing…

  4. Alex on March 6th, 2009 10:42 am

ERA based on 1/3 of an inning is hardly useful.

  5. Evan on March 6th, 2009 10:47 am

Yes, it’s just a playful comparison.

But that doesn’t stop it from being funny.

  6. Alex on March 6th, 2009 10:58 am

    Yeah,54 ERA is pretty funny.

But I really hope that we can use Batista in a way that he will appear to have some value, so that we can unload him onto some other team.

    As a ticket-taker? A doorstop?

tttthhhhhhhhe wheels on the bus go round and round
    round and round
    round and round

I don’t know quite why that made me laugh, but it did.
    Thanks

re the reports that they are trying to get Yuni to take some pitches and be selective at the plate, thinking how hard it is to convince a player that everything he’s been taught is wrong.

I get this mental image of Squidward saying to a drooling Spongebob: “empty your mind… empty your mind of everything that doesn’t have to do with selective hitting. Hitting strikes and breathing.”

  11. Paul B on March 6th, 2009 12:21 pm

Morse just made what Dave N called an error at first, but it was scored a hit.

Wash getting lit up in the first so far.

  12. Paul B on March 6th, 2009 12:28 pm

    End of the first, A’s up 2 – 1.

  13. joser on March 6th, 2009 12:33 pm

Wash getting lit up in the first so far.

See, that’s perfect: we get to see the consequences of bad fielding and have it assigned to Washburn. (No wonder Washburn is a flyball pitcher, balls on the ground don’t help him anyway).

That said, Dave just said Gutierrez made a great catch, so there you go.

  14. bakomariner on March 6th, 2009 12:35 pm

    Box score on mlb.com says 2-0 A’s…

  15. Paul B on March 6th, 2009 12:39 pm

Yes, 2 – 0, my mistake. Trying to multitask.

  16. Paul B on March 6th, 2009 12:45 pm

Washburn didn’t make it out of the second inning. Only 1 and a third innings.

  17. bakomariner on March 6th, 2009 12:47 pm

So there goes his “scoreless” innings streak…

  18. scott19 on March 6th, 2009 12:48 pm

What I got a chuckle out of was when Niehaus, a little while ago, made a reference to how “some people out there” were a little upset when the M’s swept the A’s at the end of the season — as it cost them the chance to take Strasburg first in the draft.

Always love it when the blogosphere gets a “hey now” of sorts from ole’ Uncle Dave. 🙂

  19. Paul B on March 6th, 2009 12:53 pm

7 hits and 4 earned runs for Wash, in 1.3 innings.

Although one of the hits should have been an error. But still, not good.

  20. scott19 on March 6th, 2009 12:53 pm

I think (hope) Batista will get the can before they break camp…he’s about as done as you can be…

The Phillies took a huge hit on money by releasing Eaton; Z. should do the same thing…

Actually, Batista might make a good fit with the Phils…they do have a history of signing washed-up closers, after all.

  21. scott19 on March 6th, 2009 12:58 pm

Well, that’s not a bad line for Wash…

    …it’s terrible!

  22. 6-4-3 on March 6th, 2009 1:02 pm

So is ERA the only official stat that can go to infinity (i.e., giving up earned runs without retiring anyone)?

  23. Kunkoh on March 6th, 2009 1:03 pm

    I blame Kenji…. uhm wait a moment.

  24. bakomariner on March 6th, 2009 1:09 pm

It’s not Wash’s fault! He has no run support! If his offense would just have scored him 5 runs in the first two innings, he’d be fine…

  25. scott19 on March 6th, 2009 1:13 pm

I think The Bus is about ready to be towed out to the boneyard.

  26. bakomariner on March 6th, 2009 1:15 pm

The box score has Wash hitting Giambi twice…seriously? That’s horrible…

  27. msb on March 6th, 2009 1:19 pm

Well, Ja. Giambi is still a pretty big target …

  28. TomTuttle on March 6th, 2009 1:21 pm

C’mon Mariners, just eat the money, release Washburn, and take us out of our misery.

R-R Smith is a better starter than Washburn for cryin’ out loud!

  29. diderot on March 6th, 2009 1:26 pm

Always love it when the blogosphere gets a “hey now” of sorts from ole’ Uncle Dave.

I’d love to know what ‘blogosphere’ means to Dave–is it just comments on the Times/P-I boards…or even distant outposts like USSM? I wonder what he reads.

Has there ever been consideration of hosting an event with the broadcasters in addition to what’s been done with the front office types? Not to learn so much from them as for them to learn from/about USSM/LL.

  30. scott19 on March 6th, 2009 1:27 pm

Giambi, Holliday, Nomar…what’s with the A’s collecting this many (formerly) big names?

BTW, that’s now 3-for-3 in the HBP department for Giambi on the day…

  31. scott19 on March 6th, 2009 1:31 pm

Has there ever been consideration of hosting an event with the broadcasters in addition to what’s been done with the front office types? Not to learn so much from them as for them to learn from/about USSM/LL.

To answer a question with a question, wouldn’t it be just too cool if Dave N. could make a special guest appearance at a USSM feed? 😉

  32. ManifestDestiny on March 6th, 2009 1:44 pm

    Washburn speaks, per Baker Blog:

Went downstairs to the clubhouse to hear from Washburn. He sort of laughed off his performance and said he got tired near the end.

“Well, I got my work in,” he said. “I don’t think it was really as bad as it looked.”

Please stop laughing and get out of the rotation

  33. scott19 on March 6th, 2009 2:00 pm

Yeah, there are “times in the season when you struggle”, Jarrod…

Like about 30 out of 32 starts.

  34. wabbles on March 6th, 2009 2:07 pm

Guys! Guys! You’re forgetting The Master Plan. We want Washburn to shine (or at least not stink up the place) during spring training and beyond thanks to our improved defense. Then we can unload him on some unlucky team. (We aren’t going to just cut him.) Outings like today’s aren’t helping.

  35. joser on March 6th, 2009 2:19 pm

We want him to shine in games that count. He’s not going to shine if he’s pitching away from Safeco without Endy and Ichiro in the outfield. Of course, he could help his case by not sucking, too.

Giambi is currently #3 on the HBP active leaderboard. You think he sports that .408 lifetime OBP because he’s fast? 😉

  36. joser on March 6th, 2009 2:22 pm

Great, Blowers says his interpretation from talking to Wakamatsu is that Griffey will play the outfield whenever he can. Sigh.

  37. CMC_Stags on March 6th, 2009 2:22 pm

R-R Smith is a better starter than Washburn for cryin’ out loud!

How do you figure? Based on his 12 MLB starts?

I’m not saying that RRS might not be better, but that’s a pretty emphatic statement that I’m just not sure the stats support. While RRS’s projections at Fangraphs are better than Washburn – FIP between 4.01 and 4.24 compared to Washburn’s range of 4.61 to 4.7 – a large part of those projections are based on relief appearances.

Given a full year of starting for both, I’m not sure that RRS would be better by a significantly significant margin by the end of the season. If that’s the case, then see what, if anything Washburn can do to rebuild his value and then trade him. Cutting him for nothing is not an efficient use of the team’s resources right now.

  38. joser on March 6th, 2009 2:30 pm

Yes, and you don’t want to burn out RRS early… especially if you can find a taker for Washburn at the trade deadline.

  39. TomTuttle on March 6th, 2009 2:45 pm

Yes, and you don’t want to burn out RRS early… especially if you can find a taker for Washburn at the trade deadline.

Ya, I can see the other 29 teams lining up for Washburn’s services right now!

  40. scott19 on March 6th, 2009 2:58 pm

Well, Wash would probably the #1 or 2 starter in the Nationals’ superstar rotation.

  41. Alex on March 6th, 2009 3:12 pm

    Ouch, 12 runs. What happened?

At least Washburn’s Era is lower than Batista’s. But with 4 runs in 1.1 innings the result is actually worse.

  42. TomTuttle on March 6th, 2009 3:42 pm

It just sucks when you read lines like Washburn’s, because you want to try to get yourself optimistic for 2009, you really do.

But really, I’m much more excited for 2010 and 2011 right now than I am for ’09.

And of course, who knows how many of our minor leaguers will even pan out?

Even if rebuilding is the right thing to do, it still sucks.

  43. wabbles on March 6th, 2009 4:50 pm

The huge difference between RRS and Washburn is, of course, about $9 million a season (and that RRS still has some potential to get better).

  44. qwerty on March 6th, 2009 5:27 pm

He obviously came to camp in shape. Midseason form already!

  45. Breadbaker on March 6th, 2009 10:46 pm

Great, Blowers says his interpretation from talking to Wakamatsu is that Griffey will play the outfield whenever he can. Sigh.

Well, if we take that literally, shouldn’t that mean that he’ll never play there?

  46. Breadbaker on March 7th, 2009 3:39 am

Am I the only one watching the JPN-KOR WBC game? Ichiro is 3-3 with three runs scored and a stolen base, Kenji is 1-2 with a run scored and the home team is up 9-2 in the 4th. Despite the score, the intensity of the atmosphere is amazing. I’m not sure there has ever been a game played in March where the teams cared as much as these players obviously do.

But Lord do I hate the screen in the Tokyo Dome which the camera has to look through.

  47. TomTuttle on March 7th, 2009 4:10 am

Kenji is 1-2 with a run scored and the home team is up 9-2 in the 4th.

    Whoop-de-doo.

    Johjima = past his prime

    Clement = the future

I don’t care what kind of crap Super Mario, Bros. along with Chuck and Howard make you think. We should have NEVER re-signed Johjima, period.

I just thank god Z and Wak are here and the ‘Age Of Common Sense’ in Mariners baseball is likely beginning.

  48. ndrfx on March 7th, 2009 9:03 am

Woohoo, Kenji and Ichiro killed in WBC today!

  49. joser on March 7th, 2009 9:51 am

Well, if we take that literally, shouldn’t that mean that he’ll never play there?

    Heh.
Well, yeah, but I think they may be using a different interpretation of “can.”

I don’t care what kind of crap Super Mario, Bros. along with Chuck and Howard make you think. We should have NEVER re-signed Johjima, period.

That’s completely true and mostly irrelevant. As bad as the contract is, it’s signed; as much of a dead-end as Kenji may be, he’s on the roster. It’s not a question of them “making us think” something — you’re preaching to the choir here, and I’m not sure why you’re insulting us by assuming otherwise. But given that there’s no sign the team intends to cut its losses and release Johjima from his contract, and there’s no sign Johjima will elect to void it and return with dignity to Japan, the guy is on the team… so shouldn’t we be hoping that he finds some miraculous source of rebound and does as well as possible?

I’m a bigger proponent of Clement than most, but I’d rather have two plus-offense catchers than one. I’d rather have the team not have a huge drop-off when Clement isn’t behind the plate (which may be more often than we’d like if he’s still rehabbing that knee). So I’d rather have Kenji put up some good numbers. Yes, there might be a long-term benefit to having Kenji absolutely crater this year in a way that causes him to retire from the team by the end of the season, but I want the team to win as many games as possible this year too.
