Ichiro on the tv today!

DMZ · March 15, 2009 at 8:57 am · Filed Under Mariners

More hot WBC action.

Japan v Cuba at 1pm! ESPN2. Ichiro Ichiro Ichiro. Japan’s continued success keeps those “Ichiro meets Griffey” stories on ice. Remember, reporters: they’ve already met!

Then at 4:30, US v Netherlands! Also on ESPN2!
And Mexico v Korea at 8!

I know I haven’t been the WBC’s biggest booster, but that’s a lot of high-quality baseball to be on the air in one day, especially for March, when it’s still snowing.

Yeah, the Japan-Cuba rematch should be a good game. Korea-Mexico too, though there’s less subtext there (and fewer ex-Mariners… Shin-Soo Choo and…?) But I fear the game against the US is where the wooden-cleated wonders’ Cinderella dreams die.

But the all-Mariners-all-the-time Team Venezuela is fun to watch. Hopefully those guys will bring back some of their success to the M’s even when they’re facing full MLB lineups. Can you imagine if Jose Lopez could put up a line like this in the regular season?

Stone supplies details on what all the great Japanese single-season hitting record-holders are wearing this spring

Lavender T-shirt over a green-and-beige striped long-sleeve shirt, with tapered bluejeans, backward red cap, and wraparound white sunglasses.

    That’s our boy.

Speaking of fashion, I must say, the Japan uni does Ichiro no favors. The bold red and blue looks exactly like a Little League uniform.

Stick with the blue, gray and teal, Ich.

Well it’s sunny and warm down here in San Diego…
Sorry, I just had to rub it in.

I’m sure liking this beta version of the new MLB tv player. It’s pretty sweet. On a side note, watching this Cuban team hack away is like watching a whole team of Yuni’s at the plate. Guess it’s like they say – you don’t “walk” your way off the island…

Those back-to-back errors from Ichiro and Johjima – I hope those weren’t some kind of omen.

Doesn’t Mexico have Campillo? I forget his first name… Jorge? A pitcher who, in a recurring theme for the last administration, we gave away for (if I recall correctly) zilch.

I wasn’t able to watch the game, but with Ichiro going 0 for 5 and doing rather poorly this WBC, I am guessing the announcers talked a ton about how much value his veteran leadership brings to team Japan am I right?

Nobody is still reading this thread, but this was too good to let go un-noted:

Tommy Lasorda, the tournament’s official mascot, held court during batting practice with several Japanese players.
Ichiro Suzuki stopped by and spoke passable English with Lasorda, who in turn spoke passable English with Suzuki. Ichiro kept pointing to Lasorda’s circumferentially-challenged midsection and saying, “How many months?”
Clearly unfamiliar with certain idioms, Lasorda answered, “I’m 82 years old.”

    Ichiro’s awesomeness increases 2%
