I realize this is totally unrelated to the article, but [deleted, totally unrelated]

Ulcers are not caused by stress (or spicy food). They are almost always caused by a bacteriological infection.

“When you think about it, I could get an ulcer from the stress of talking to you guys.”

Good to hear from our Outfield Ninja. RIP, Harry Kalas. If you never heard him call a game you missed a rare treat.

Ulcers aren’t caused by spicy food or stress, but they can be made far more painful and dangerous from those two factors. A stressed individual will produce more stomach acid.

and another quote, found online … “I do know that Griffey has been playing right field, but I also heard that he is not threatening to me. That’s what I heard,” he deadpanned, causing Barron to chuckle.

Ichiro quotes are gold….why the hell would anyone in the media get annoyed with him?

Ichiro will never stop being the most entertaining interview in baseball.

Also, one tip, Ichiro: MLB.tv can be purchased for $19.95 a month. Though I imagine that you could probably find a TV in the Arizona complex with the Extra Innings package.

This is exactly what I was thinking, as well. I realize the M’s aren’t paying him all that money up front, but maybe he could find part of that $50M to pay for a little MLB.tv

However, what he REALLY wanted to say was:

“Do you realize I have an ulcer? Do you think watching Griffey in right field and Morrow closing is going to help that? I mean COME ON!”

Regarding Ichiro’s ulcers, I blame the Burger Chef and his post-game buffet/culinary creations.

  11. Mike Snow on April 13th, 2009 2:02 pm

In that case, has anybody ever checked Silva for ulcers?

  12. Hernandez on April 13th, 2009 2:03 pm

Ah, Ichiro, just as wacky as ever. It’ll be great to have him back in the lineup.

I wonder if Wak would consider putting Ichiro in the 3 hole and continue to keep Endy at leadoff. That guy has just been a spark plug for us and think maybe it could lead to some more runs for us. I doubt it will happen but think would be interesting.

Well his media relations skills are certainly in mid-season form. Nice to hear this kind of positive attitude from him though. It was kind of worrying not seeing him out there for a whole week.

I don’t see Chavez staying in the lead off help us get more runs when Ichiro gets back. He’s been better than expected so far; but I don’t see any way he can sustain his performance any more than Gutz can continue to hit into double plays. Ichiro on the other hand can maintain a high OBP.

  16. Gump on April 13th, 2009 2:46 pm

My main thinking was since we don’t have a huge power guy in the 3 slot and if we continue to have chavez on base it would help get more runs in playing small ball.

Absolutely classic interview! Ichiro has got to be one of the best interviews going in sports.

    I guess I’m human

    No, Ichiro, you aren’t 🙂

Makes much more sense, imho, to drop Endy to 9th and still get Chavez-Ichiro-Gutierrez consecutively in the order. Man, it’s going to be incredible watching an outfield comprised of those three guys. The 2001 outfield was impressive, but still regularly had Al Martin in it. The potential of THIS outfield blows my mind. Can’t wait.

I’m very glad Ichiro is ready to go! This season’s early news just keeps getting better and better (besides the Triunfel and shuttle bus news)!

And as always, his quotes are pure gold. Many years from now, Ichiro and Roy Corcoran should host a talk show about…well, anything. Everyone would watch it.

  21. TaeBoJackson on April 13th, 2009 3:19 pm

    Welcome back Ichi!

RIP Mark “The Bird” Fidrych. What a day.

  22. Kunkoh on April 13th, 2009 3:48 pm

Over the past 8 years I think Chavez has been above average (slightly) only once for OBP. My point being, it’s nice right now, enjoy it, but it probably will not last. As such, Ichiro who has maintained an above average OBP his entire career will probably be on base more often.

I remember that when the M’s scouting guys said at the January shindig, “There will be some days when we will run three centerfielders out there.” we all broke into applause. (I think that surprised them.) It’s good to have Ichiro back for his contributions both on and off the field. That Griffey quip is a classic.
