Forget Nick Swisher

If the .685 wOBA during the first week of the season didn’t convince the Yankees to hang onto Swisher, news that Xavier Nady is out for the season with a torn elbow ligament will. No way the Yanks trade Swisher now.
well great……..waited to long…….
not to mention that sparkling 0.00 ERA
*sigh*
His ERA is good, but that 1/1 K/BB ratio needs to improve. Maybe we could send him down to AAA and get him to add a third pitch.
At this point, I’m not so sure that the Yankees aren’t a 85-90 win team, max.
I think a pertinent question is, would the Yanks have been willing to trade Swisher in the first place give Nady’s history of injuries?
How does this effect your opinion of the Yankees, Henry? Swisher was always the better player pre-’08. I think Nady’s injury actually makes the team better. Swisher won’t bat .450 all year, but I think 2008 was pretty clearly a fluke, and he’ll go back to being a 3-3.5 WAR player, if not more.
I snagged him off the scrap heap after my fantasy draft, thanks to USSM’s constant touting (and his being playable at 4 posiitons). That has worked out rather handsomely so far – so thanks for that 🙂
’tis a bummer that we won’t be seeing him in blue and teal anytime soon though.
I’m not basing it on the Nady injury. To be honest, based on what was said about A-rod, I think his injury is more severe than the team, and his cousin, are letting on to.
So, all said and done, this hitting is going to be not incredible, and their defense is going to be frighteningly awful. I’m not saying the Yankers are a losing team, just not a 95 win team.
The NY Daily News may report that the workout looked good, but A-rod said he needed to slow down the workouts afterward.
A-rod’great and all, but missing him for a month, even given the huge dropoff from him to Cody Ransom, isn’t going to cost the team 5 wins in the standings. If you think he’s out half the season that’s one thing, but if we’re talking about the difference between a May 5th return and a May 15th return, that’s pretty small.
A healthy A-Rod’s value generally falls somewhere between 6-0 WAR. Missing him for a month or more is only going to cost the team ~1.5 wins at absolute most. That might be enough to cost them the playoffs in an absolutely brutal AL East where even the Orioles look good this year, but it’s not the difference between 95 wins and 85-90.
Whups, the first sentence of that second paragraph is supposed to read 6-9 WAR.
If Nady is out of the year that does not make the Yankees a better team, their outfielders are Swisher, Nady, Gardner, Cabrera & Damon. That is not exactly an outfield to get excited about, if I was a yankee fan and it turned out Nady was out for the year, I would be bummed and worried about the outfield, both offensively and defensively. It is so nice to have an outfield like the M’s where you know you are at least covered defensively.
If we had obtained Swisher, then what? Try sneaking Wlad through waivers or something else? It’s sad we couldn’t get him and he would be an upgrade over Wlad but oh well.
Why do we need Nick Swisher? Isn’t Jamie Burke still in the M’s system somewhere?
Go M’s!!!
But Jaime Burke is a rightie. This team desperately needs a leftie for its pen.
I was hoping the M’s would’ve made this trade happen. Now who’s going to replace Silva in the rotation?
