Game FELIX DAY I mean 11, Tigers at Mariners

DMZ · April 17, 2009 at 5:51 pm · Filed Under Mariners

I can’t wait for lineups to be posted, it’s Felix Day! Felix v Verlander. I have a bold and doomed prediction: Felix will throw 100% fastballs.

Two questions: how many pitches before I’m proved wrong, and how far off will I end up — 20%? 10%?

Haha! On Silva checking Griffey’s heart rate…
Because Silva is an expert on what a healthy heart sounds like 😛

  2. DLCheeZ on April 17th, 2009 9:30 pm

…and the throw to the plate will be LATE!

In all seriousness, I’ve never seen Jr this happy. He’s more animated and engaged with his teammates than this year than he ever was (at least outwardly) last time he was here.

I know all about the statistical issues wrt Jr, but it does seem like his presence is having an affect on the atmosphere of the team.

    I guess winning helps too.

You guess? Winning is the only thing that breeds chemistry. Even best friends get pissed at each other when you lose 100 games.

  5. theraven on April 17th, 2009 9:33 pm

Anyone wanna venture a guess if our DH last year could’ve scored from 1st on that one?

  6. Paul L on April 17th, 2009 9:33 pm

    @b2 Jinx!

  7. zvazda on April 17th, 2009 9:33 pm

I bet its having an effect too!

  8. juneau_fan on April 17th, 2009 9:34 pm

theraven: The weeble wobbled but it didn’t fall down! (Or make it to home on a long single.)

  9. zvazda on April 17th, 2009 9:34 pm

    Oh no. It’s*

Please… Vidro never saw 1st base.

Here’s to hoping tonight is Morrow’s official end to spring training.

  12. Paul L on April 17th, 2009 9:36 pm

I even looked up affect v effect, then still got it wrong.

    @#$!

  13. Mid80sRighty on April 17th, 2009 9:36 pm

Huh, sure looked like that Morrow pitch was a little lower than the tracker showed…but, we’ll take it.

    100mph. nuff said.

  15. juneau_fan on April 17th, 2009 9:37 pm

What, in all that is holy, is Sims talking about?

“You know, the face game you played as kids!” while we’re seeing Joh with his neck muff pulled up over his mouth and nose. Wha?

  16. zvazda on April 17th, 2009 9:37 pm

Hey. 6 strikes before a ball. Cool.

  17. hawgdriver on April 17th, 2009 9:38 pm

    hittin 100 tonigh on gameday

  18. PhinneyFan on April 17th, 2009 9:38 pm

Dave N. just said “another fastball, if it’s working, why throw something else?”

And Rick replies “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?”

    sigh…

    Woah.

  23. zvazda on April 17th, 2009 9:40 pm

Tied for the second best team in baseball!

  24. hawgdriver on April 17th, 2009 9:40 pm

    evil angry Morrow showed up

oh I’m lovin this team so far

Disregard anything the broadcasters say, they’re paid to pump fans up, not criticize the coaching staff. I’m sure (at least in Rizzs and Blowers’ case) that they know better.

  26. You Gotta Luv These Guys on April 17th, 2009 9:41 pm

Personally, I’m a fan of the fastball. No, I will not bring out my Moyer shirts if next year the FO decides to go further down nostalgia lane.

  27. Paul L on April 17th, 2009 9:41 pm

This team has a different air about. It’s the first time I’ve been excited watching them in years.

  28. Luc on April 17th, 2009 9:42 pm

And holy crap, Twins helpin’ us out scoring 7 in the 8th to beat the Angels.

  29. Mid80sRighty on April 17th, 2009 9:44 pm

Great win! Still not sure how they’re scoring all these runs without a “legitimate” power threat in the lineup…

  30. b2 on April 17th, 2009 9:48 pm

Tied with San Diego nonetheless. Who would have thunk it?

  31. Mid80sRighty on April 17th, 2009 9:49 pm

This team has a different air about.

That’s because we’re actually getting the lucky breaks this year, rather than getting all the unlucky breaks like last year. I think part of what was so painful last year was because even when we thought things couldn’t get worse, they did. It’s nice to see Murphy kicked to the curb, at least for the time being.

  32. bratman on April 17th, 2009 9:50 pm

One of the most improbable games I have seen in a long long while. Kudos. Kudos.

    Never give up, never surrender

so happy! Dr. Z jersey in the mail!

“You know, the face game you played as kids!” while we’re seeing Joh with his neck muff pulled up over his mouth and nose. Wha?

    Me: “Is that Kenji”
Guy next to me at the bar: “That’s Ninji”

Please… Vidro never saw 1st base.

Even when he was standing on it. He couldn’t see his shoes for the same reason.

On the style front, I’m very happy to see that Ordonez seems to have found some relaxer. That damn frizzy clown hair was driving me crazy for the past couple of seasons!

It’s still early. Once summer has arrived and he’s back east in the humidity, it’ll be frizz-city. You know the season has changed when the balls start carrying and Mags starts looking like the swamp thing.

  35. JJD on April 17th, 2009 11:17 pm

If we’re gonna free someone, I still feel like it should be Jeff Clement. Or else we need to trade him like right fucking now. Seriously, his trade value drops every day he spends in the minors.

I went to Friday night’s Rainier’s home opener, and Clement had a “why am I HERE?”-night with the stick. Crushed a homer to right in the first. Hit one to the left-centerfield wall in his next at bat for a double, then KILLED a ball that the CF caught right next to the 425 sign in dead center. And he singled to finish it off.

Carp hit a dinger, too. R’s won 6-2. Any thoughts form USSM on Chris Seddon, who started for Tacoma? Looked like a big, rangy lefty and he got up to 91-92 a couple times. Denny Stark looked really sharp in relief.

What on earth happened to the quality of the game threads…?

  37. TomTuttle on April 17th, 2009 11:28 pm

    8-3 🙂

    ‘Nuff said.

    Go M’s.

What on earth happened to the quality of the game threads…?

It’s always this way, early in the season.

A new season always attracts a bunch of new posters, some of them who take some time and learn to contribute positively, and some who never do.

    We’re keeping an eye out.

  39. pinball1973 on April 18th, 2009 1:05 am

This place is still heaven compared to everywhere else I’ve seen (~10 teams MLB). Japan thread (NPB) are as generally good spirited, but there’s no depth.

Disregard anything the broadcasters say, they’re paid to pump fans up, not criticize the coaching staff. I’m sure (at least in Rizzs and Blowers’ case) that they know better.

I expect a broadcaster to give me the tone and sense of the game, but not to tell me what the right strategy is (“that’s exactly right!”). I wonder if it’s McCarver and Morgan who made it the norm for broadcasters to speculate on whether a bunt or guarding the lines or pulling in the infield was the right strategy. You don’t hear Niehaus doing that much; instead, he’ll just describe the action. I don’t remember Ernie Harwell or Ned Martin doing it either. “They’re pulling the infield in” is all I want to hear. I don’t need to hear “great move” from Rick Rizzs. I will say that Sims, when I tuned in the game in the third inning just as the Tigers scored, gave me an almost immediate sense that Felix was in trouble from his tone of voice.

know all about the statistical issues wrt Jr, but it does seem like his presence is having an affect on the atmosphere of the team.

    Mariner OPS by position
    2008 and 2009

    1B .680 .762
    CF .699 .722
    DH .608 .838

Atmosphere and chemistry make people feel better. Talent wins games.

And we’re not even mentioning the “D” word yet….
