    I hope so, scott19, I hope so.

There was simply no way that Washburn was going to go 4-0 but I’d hoped the game would be close enough for the M’s to catch up from however many runs he left on the table. Not looking so hot here.

Well, when it comes to pitching, they appear to be pretty desperate. When it comes to hitting, unfortunately, they appear to be doing just fine at the moment.

Is this the first step on the “regression to the mean” path for Jarrod…or just a rough day from a pitcher who has actually improved?

Everyone can have a rough day.

(Like Fox Mulder, I want to believe.)

The reappearance of the 2008 Washburn (0 K, 3BB, 2HR) seems to be helping. Funny how the Angels seem to see the ball so well in daylight and the M’s bats are taking a siesta.

  5. juneau_fan on April 26th, 2009 2:13 pm

Did they just mention our own bad pitching choice, Jeff Weaver? In Dodgers minor leagues?

  6. scott19 on April 26th, 2009 2:19 pm

Yeah, with the Angels as hard up for pitching as they appear to be, I’m surprised they haven’t tried to reunite the Spicoli Brothers one more time.

  7. joser on April 26th, 2009 2:20 pm

Well, from what Dave has been pointing out wrt his pitch distribution, Washburn has improved. But even an improved Washburn wasn’t going to go 20-0. Much better pitchers — better than Washburn could ever hope to be — give up hits and runs and lose games.

We can still hope that the M’s bats wake up, and they get into the decrepit Angels bullpen soon enough to pull off a comeback.

Maybe the worst part about this is that with Burke catching today, this is just going to reinforce the myth of Rob Johnson’s cERA. Well, ok, a loss would be worse than that. At least Texas lost too…

  9. scott19 on April 26th, 2009 2:25 pm

Alas, so much for the “new-and-improved” Cy Wash…

  10. juneau_fan on April 26th, 2009 2:26 pm

I don’t know, joser, I haven’t noticed any ‘wild pitches’ today.

I work for the Albuquerque Isotopes, AAA for the Dodgers. Sadly we have Mr. Jeff Weaver there with us. He is pitching in relief and his first apperance of the season he gave up a 3 run bomb on his first pitch. I was just standing there laughing. It was priceless.

  12. Breadbaker on April 26th, 2009 2:44 pm

Lest we forget, Mr. Weaver Sr. was the bad choice of a number of clubs over time (the Tigers and Cardinals got the cherce time), including indeed these Angels.

Uh….not a good effort by our Mariners.

  14. daveblev on April 26th, 2009 3:12 pm

Ok, i think it’s time to panic now, the goose is cooked now as far as the Mariners season is concerned. I don’t think they will be able to beat the Angels and A’s the rest of the year, after watching this game.

  15. juneau_fan on April 26th, 2009 3:25 pm

This eventual Yuni strikeout will be a fitting end to the game.

And before I can hit Submit….

  16. Colm on April 26th, 2009 3:53 pm

    Thoughts on the game:

It wasn’t a good performance from Washburn, but he didn’t look totally deplorable. No strikeouts? Oh, maybe he did. Oh well.

Yuni is f**king-bloody-dreadful. I’m tired watching him.

This team is better than people thought, but not as good as 12 and 6. Still, that hot start – and the tepid competition – should make for a much more interesting season.

  17. themedia on April 26th, 2009 4:09 pm

    That was ugly.

  18. Axtell on April 26th, 2009 4:21 pm

So exactly when does Yuni get his extended time on the bench? He’s unbearable to watch. Time after time swinging at the first pitch…when does the madness end?

I hate to say this, but Rauuulll has the #4 Web Gem on the current Baseball Tonight.

I hate to say this, but Rauuulll has the #4 Web Gem on the current Baseball Tonight.

speaking of Rauuull, i’m watching Thursday’s MIL vs. PHI game on dvr, the Dave Bush near no-hitter, well Harry Kalas’s replacement announcers mentioned that “Raul has said he gets a bad rep defensively because of some plays early in his career where he took bad routes to the ball.” They mentioned he was a converted catcher. Hmm, how bout later in your career Raul?

  21. scott19 on April 26th, 2009 6:05 pm

Well, after watching slower-than-a-sloth Pat Burrell slog around in LF for years, they might actually think Raul has decent range out there.

  22. terry on April 26th, 2009 6:34 pm

When can we start talking about cutting bait with Jr?

  23. nvn8vbryce on April 26th, 2009 7:35 pm

Ah, the Jarrod we remember and love.

Is it time to start singing yet?

Any time Silva is pitching or Yuni is…well…being Yuni

That’s a very funny, and very note-perfect, simulation of all the manic-depressive types who jump on and off the bandwagon with each win and loss.

  25. Colm on April 26th, 2009 9:39 pm

Terry – you have no heart. Just being Junior will get Junior a lot of slack.

But, being left-handed with some power, and leading the team in walks – he’s not the most conspicuous problem on the offense.

  26. bongo on April 26th, 2009 10:55 pm

I was in a Tully’s today, and overheard a conversation between a group of middle-aged men, talking about Yuni’s hacking at pitches off the plate and his poor fielding. These were not sabermetricians, just ordinary fans noticing how poorly Yuni is playing.

If it’s become that obvious to even casual observers, I’m surprised that Cedeno hasn’t gotten more playing time at SS. Or maybe Jack Z. has something up his sleeve….

  27. themedia on April 26th, 2009 11:43 pm

Or maybe Jack Z. has something up his sleeve….

Trading for J.J. Hardy? Or Alcides Escobar? A guy can dream, right?

  28. terry on April 27th, 2009 5:46 am

Terry – you have no heart.

If not loving a guy with an OPS in the .650ish range (wOBA=.310) whose usefulness is limited to DHing against righties is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.

BTW, if that’s not the most conspicuous problem with the offense, then, eeewwwwwwwww.

Sure he’s projected to be something like a wOBA=.330 true talent (higher if used strictly in a platoon scenario), but he’s also pushing 90 in dawg years and cliffs tend to be closer than they appear when wearing trifocals….

  29. Kazinski on April 27th, 2009 11:19 am

Jr. has a BABIP of .205, so he isn’t getting much luck. The fact he has a .344 OBP (3rd on the team) with such a dismal BABIP is a little encouraging.

  30. joser on April 27th, 2009 12:10 pm

I’m surprised that Cedeno hasn’t gotten more playing time at SS

Cedeno’s been hurt. Drayer said he was “available for emergency use only” on Sunday. Of course it’s possible that even if he was healthy they wouldn’t be starting him, but it appears Yuni’s “Don’t worry, be happy” charmed MLB life continues….
