Game 24, A’s at M’s

DMZ · May 2, 2009 at 5:20 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Cahill v Washburn. 6:10, FSN. Washburn’s gets Rob Johnson, as Johjima gets the night off. If he has a good night we’ll see if he can resist making comments about Johnson’s good communication skills or the connection between them.

Other news: as Dave speculated, Morrow was unavailable and is now on the DL, though Morrow seems to dispute whether he could have gone or not. It’s good to see the team be cautious with their pitchers. The Times has both sides.

Denny Stark got the call up from Tacoma.

I was thinking a pig or an elephant. Maybe I need a better TV. I grew up in NorCal and I’ve never seen an oak leaf that looks like that.

It’s sideways, so it looks a bit odd compared to what you’d expect. The closeups of various players throughout the game helped somewhat.

That and the myriad references to the Oakland Oaks Sims was making…

What is that logo on the A’s cap behind the O?

I think it’s the letters JCE, inside an acorn, for J. Cal Ewing, the team’s founder.

    Should’ve came here earlier.
    “Up the middle”
    “Closing the Gap”
    “Cannon Arm”

    J. Cal Ewing is a splendid team owner name.

Two problems with that. One, the symbol on that Wiki isn’t even remotely close to what was on their hats. Two, Ewing wasn’t the owner in ’39. That Wiki explicitly states that his ownership ended in the late twenties.

Ah, I only saw their batting helmets, so you got me there (admittedly, I was frequently distracted away from the game). After a little more investigation, I found an image of a 1940 cap — it looks like a green bear behind an “O” (the tail is on the left). A bear, of course, because it’s California.

However, Ewing was still the original founder in ’39. So there. :-p

I think a lot of your guys’ are better than this one, but for gits and shiggles:

“Bang-Bang Play”. These bags are always juiced.

I never realized how much baseball terminology lent itself to gay porn.

    Dang.

    What I missed.

    So, was there a game?

    I was at work, but…
    “Working the Lumber”
    “Strokes it up the middle”
    “Playing doubles defense”
and my final contribution to this fine, fine post:
    “Back to Back Jacks”

    Thanks Lauren =)

I can’t believe no one mentioned “A high hard one”

WFB has an ops+ of 130 this year (in 43 PA) compared to his career OPS+ of 76 (1432 PA). Hot start, small sample size.

Hah. Everyone knows it is because he is finally getting regular playing time, and the respect he deserves.

I couldn’t find figure out why there were so many comments on this game. So I come over here, see the all the comments and try to think up an original one.

I think “Dammit, what’s the name of that ship they had out in the bullpen?” and Google it.

It’s late, and I need to go to bed. Also, I’m an idiot.

Regardless of the inherent value of gay porn for fostering clubhouse chemistry, it’s a moot point. Gay porn isn’t allowed in Safeco (even if it’s softcore).

The teletubbies aren’t even allowed in Safeco though that might be more because of a rift between them and the Mariner Moose.

Dude, it’s because J. Guillen lit a fire under his arse.

I was watching a musical [insert your joke here] and it fits right in with the theme:

Sunday in the park with George.

I can’t believe that no one came up with “Riding the pine”

I never realized how much baseball terminology lent itself to gay porn.

Once you’re in the right mindset, everything sounds like porn. Just ask any 14-year-old boy.

The teletubbies aren’t even allowed in Safeco though that might be more because of a rift between them and the Mariner Moose.

No, it’s because of things have been uncomfortable between them since that… “incident.” In the Moose’s defense, he was really drunk and was just “curious.”

I like how Lauren of all people turned this place into Lookout Landing XXX.

Not only is she the most likely culprit, as she notes, she’s also one of the few who could. Because the most interesting thing about this gamethread to me is that if it had been nothing but guys, a “gay porn title” thread probably would’ve been uncomfortable and weird and therefore pretty much impossible. But because Lauren was in the middle of it, the guys could give themselves permission to let their imaginations run wild. It’s the same psychology as a MFM three-way: Yuni and Endy probably wouldn’t get into bed naked together, but stick a naked Lauren in between them and it’s “Around the Horn” (with an outfield assist) and “Shagging Balls” (with a Fungo bat) …and “A Surefire Triple-Play”….

Whats the scoop on the new pitcher the M’s just signed?

  21. terry on May 3rd, 2009 10:40 am

I guess today’s game would be the safe-sex match?

  22. joser on May 3rd, 2009 11:31 am

You mean Steven Shell? The Nationals didn’t want him. How interesting could he be?
