I’m exhausted just from gnawing my fingernails for so many innings.

That was a fun game to watch.

I need a nap from this game, and some asprin.

Vargas was very cool out there for his MLB debut this year.

Looks like another good pickup by Jack Z.

Best game thread ever at the Lookout. Better lucky than good!

Wish I had stayed past the top of the 13th. Great game.

I was at the Safe for ALL 15 innings baby! Yes!

This team is going to be good for a lot of these heart attack type games. Being good at run prevention means that they’re going to be on both ends of a lot of one-run ballgames.

That’s always fun to watch. Close games are always one at-bat away from turning around. And boy, did this one keep turning around. And around and around and around.

  9. Sinking Away on May 3rd, 2009 7:45 pm

Vargas was outstanding. It’s nice to have a lefthander in the pen with the ability to get both swinging and looking strikes.

Hey, let’s talk about Jerry Owens.

CoolStandings now has us with the best chances for winning the division!

At the risk of sounding negative, this game illustrated one of my favorite truisms about baseball: that games are often lost more than won. The A’s basically handed the game to the M’s. Now I’m not knocking the M’s by saying that: they took advantage of their opportunities. There’s always going to be games like this, and one of the marks of a good team is that it’s able to capitalize when the other team is desperately trying to hand it the game.

Anyone care to give some insight on Vargas and his potential?

I was impressed with his composure more than the 90mph fastballs he was throwing. Looks like he was working both sides of the plate OK but that changeup was his best pitch IMO.

This team will cause many of us to become drunks.
    But happy Drunks

CoolStandings now has us with the best chances for winning the division!

Actually, CoolStandings has the Angels to win the division, barely:

    Seattle 15-10 29.8
    Texas 12-12 26.2
    Angels 10-13 29.9
    Oakland 9-13 14.0

Between Vargas and Gutierrez, I’d say we got our money’s worth out of the Putz trade tonight. Heck of a performance for both of them.

I’m exhausted just from gnawing my fingernails for so many innings.

That was a fun game to watch.I watched up till the top and got so behind on editing the page that I completely had to turn it off, considering the M’s were down 3 and Batista was on the mound, and then they win. This season is the best in a long time and Vargas is a lifesaver for at least one day!

  18. wabbles on May 3rd, 2009 8:41 pm

I don’t know that last year’s roster or manager could have won that game.
OK, so here’s the thing. We sweep the Angels in Los Angeles of Anahein. Then the A’s come into Safeco, throw EVERYTHING they have at us…and lose two of three. That elusive division title is looking more and more attainable.

  19. griffin on May 3rd, 2009 8:43 pm

went to the game, left when Batista gave up the 3 runs cuz i had to catch the ferry ride home at 5:30 since i passed up the 4 ferry. Get to the terminal to find out i missed the ferry, and also hear we tied it. watched the rest of the game in a bar… bummer.

had a blast at the game until batista though. back and forth, great 9th inning tie.

that johjima HR took me by surprise very much!

  20. tmac9311 on May 3rd, 2009 9:09 pm

best part of the game was Batista, every one left after the 3 runs and i got to move down first row, first base line, i could see the stitching on Ichiro’s jersey, and then a 13th inning 3 run rally for the price of left field bleachers. I also found the kid size gloves(which are too big for my hands) under the seat. Best day I’ve had in a while

  21. joser on May 3rd, 2009 9:17 pm

    We do? When?

  22. UpOrDownMsFan on May 3rd, 2009 9:20 pm

    “Woooooooooooo” is the perfect word.

Considering I was already a diehard M’s fan, and still there wasn’t a chance I would have bet money on us being 15-10 after 25 games this year…

I’m loving this season. Smiling at people I don’t know… Patting strangers on the back…

Let’s enjoy this, long as it lasts. Vargas is just the latest welcome newcomer to the party.

  23. wabbles on May 3rd, 2009 9:56 pm

I was thinking I should have looked that up first. OK, so we took two of three from Angels in Los Angeles of Anaheim. Whatever. The point is, we’ve gone toe to toe with our two biggest challengers and come out on top. Unless the Rangers are the surprise team this year. (See 2008 when predicted division winners lost 101 games.)

  24. pinball1973 on May 3rd, 2009 10:15 pm

I had to work (as I said) so I missed this gem of a game. On the brighter side, what remains of my thinning hair still remains. I’m fond of it. It’s a little thinner but I’ve had it ever since I was a kid.*

    *Anyone get the reference?

  25. wabbles on May 3rd, 2009 10:31 pm

BTW, the M’s signed OF Jerry Owens during the game and assigned him to Tacoma. Any idea what they are up to? Just stockpiling free talent or…..

  26. themedia on May 3rd, 2009 10:36 pm

Hey, let’s talk about Jerry Owens.

If only this team had a guy who could cover tons of ground in the outfield, bat lefty, hit for zero power, and steal some bases. What’s that, they’ve got Endy Chavez?

Not a bad acquisition, all in all. If Endy goes down, at least we’ve got a replacement.

M’s also Steven Shell from the Nats in a move that says: You can never have too many right-handed, fastball-throwing relievers. Not that I disagree, but still. A lot of Z’s moves lately have me thinking: “Wait, again?”

Not bad moves, just wondering if they were necessary.

  27. Jeff Nye on May 3rd, 2009 11:26 pm

It’s freely available talent. There’s no downside to stockpiling it.

  28. Breadbaker on May 3rd, 2009 11:37 pm

We do lose the advantage of resting comfortably in Seattle while the Rangers were playing the late night game in Arlington; they weren’t done too much later than we were. However, having won, and with King Felix on the mound tomorrow, we should be in fine shape compared to the Rangers, who did have to fly after the game.

Doesn’t hurt that their best player, Mr. Hamilton is also on the DL.

  30. Mr. Egaas on May 4th, 2009 12:18 am

Don’t we have like 300 outfielders in Tacoma? Who goes?

  31. wabbles on May 4th, 2009 12:25 am

Well, we signed an outfielder and a pitcher who both are headed for Tacoma so I guess this is where the FO earns its money. (What is the roster limit for minor league teams anyway, the same as the majors?)

  32. joser on May 4th, 2009 10:48 am

Two pitchers moved up to Seattle and Tuiasosopo is on the DL (again), so I don’t think there’s really a jam. Once guys at various levels come off the DL there might be a problem, but that’s kind of a good problem to have. And you just know there’s going to be a trade in the next couple of months…

  33. joser on May 4th, 2009 10:55 am

I am a bit worried about the state of the bullpen for the next two games. Not as worried as I would be if it was someone other than Felix and Bedard taking the mound (and in that order, since Bedard likely will go fewer innings than Felix, so it’s good for the pen to get an extra day).

It’s pretty interesting that the rotation schedule worked out such that Texas comes in for just two games and those are the starters they get to face. And that would be second-place, currently-biggest-threat-in-the-AL-West Texas. Remember when they didn’t juggle the rotation schedule a week ago against the White Sox? I wonder how much they were looking ahead to this series.

  34. scharmers on May 4th, 2009 11:00 am

We win a game in which the entire bullpen + Batista pitch. Is everyone sure that the Mayan calendar doesn’t map 2012 as 2009 in the Western calendar?

And the A’s left that kid whats-his-name in for a ludicrously long time. That was pretty silly.

    Still, a W is a W.

  35. joser on May 4th, 2009 2:17 pm

Over on the Athletics Nation site they’re excoriating Geren for his managerial decisions. Actually, in the wake of this weekend’s series they’re even questioning the sainted Beane. It’s like Mariners circa 2008 over there — really ugly.

    I’m not too concerned.

I think Batista & Vargas ate enough innings. I’d expect White, Kelley, and Stark to be readily available for tonight’s game. Of course this all depends on how deep Felix can pitch today.
