You’re Welcome

On May 15th, I wrote the Should The M’s Trade Ichiro? piece. Since I hit publish, he’s 31 for 71 with nine extra base hits, for a nifty .437/.467/.648 line.

He’s now been worth +1.8 wins in 43 games, which is about a +6.5 win pace for a whole season.

Coming tomorrow, a “should the team trade Rob Johnson?” post. I expect similar results, Rob.

Thanks for balancing out my ‘contributions,’ Dave.
Since arguing with you that Wlad’s turned a corner, he’s basically gone 0-250 with 240 Ks. Damn it.

Does that mean I get to claim credit for the real Jose Lopez finally showing up for the Angels series?

    Delusions of grandeur.

Is there any doubt left that had Ichiro been born a couple thousand years earlier (and not in Japan), that he’d be part of Greek mythology?

We might be discussing if Ichiro, not Pluto, is a planet or not.

Trade our catcher of the future? NEVER! Unless, of course, it’s to our hated rivals, the Padres, as revenge for all the worthless catchers they sent us.

    B-E-L-T-R-E anyone?!? PLEASE?!?

Ichiro! would have to be a comet, not a planet. That’s the meaning of the exclamation mark.

  8. wabbles on June 1st, 2009 11:43 am

Wouldn’t Ichiro! be Zeus? Remember ‘The Throw?’ Terrence Long sure does.

  9. Alex on June 1st, 2009 11:57 am

Yeah if someone could make Beltre hit .437/.467/.648 for a while that would be great. We really need him to perform to build his trade value.

I was wondering when we might get an “Ichiro’s Amazing Season” post.

He’s on pace to be nearly +6.5 wins. Looking back, he’s had two “power” years where he had an ISO greater than .120 an double digit HRs, but those were also his two lowest OBP seasons and two of his three lowest AVG (in 2005 he barely hit .300 – horrors).

But this year, he’s hitting for power and average. I thought he was striking out more often, but his K% is actually the lowest it’s been since 2001 – shows how inaccurate observations can be.

And even though it’s less than 400 inningns and so still “small sample size” his UZR rating is the best of his career right now.

Clear we have to advocate trading him for lack of power and give him an ulcer before every season.

In this Bizzaro World, perhaps you should work on a “Why the M’s Should Never Trade Carlos Silva” post, which would then precipitate his trade.

  12. cgmonk on June 1st, 2009 12:35 pm

Sarcasm doesn’t translate very well through text. Dave made that mistake himself over at fangraphs recently when he was shocked that Tim Marchman thought the Mets should Fernando Martinez for Mark DeRosa.

I like the idea of these things continuing to happen, so we can have this comical sense of Dave controlling the universe through his blogging.

That post would put an end to this fun.

  14. Slurve on June 1st, 2009 12:40 pm

Or maybe a “Jeff CLement should rot in AAA for the rest of his life and never make it on the M’s team as a catcher” post or soemthing.

  15. SCL on June 1st, 2009 1:07 pm

Slurve, you need to be more specific. The post should be “We should definitely not call up Jeff Clement this week because he will definitely not immediately post HOF level numbers.”

Oh, he does. The trouble is — as happens in the Greek myths and the Old Testament — the normal mortals (and even Kings) quickly forget the lessons of his last intervention and drift into error once again. Blog posts just don’t have the lasting impact of lightning bolts or being turned to stone or having various body parts replaced by those of an animal. (Silva actually suffered the latter, but nobody noticed).

Is there any doubt left that had Ichiro been born a couple thousand years earlier (and not in Japan), that he’d be part of Greek mythology?

Yes, but as a Hero. “The Eleven Labors of Ichiro” (all of them involving hitting more than 200 times a year) or “Ichiro and the Golden Pennant” or something like that.

We might be discussing if Ichiro, not Pluto, is a planet or not.

Pluto’s not a planet, he’s a dog. But what the hell is Goofy?

We should trade Ichiro for a bucket of baseballs.

    There. Now he’ll hit .1000

I’d much prefer he hit 1.000, but I’m weird that way.

Sorry, Dave. That swing of his is hopeless.

How about a post saying “Why The Mariners Should Give Jarrod Washburn A Four-Year Extension”?

Batting .1000 is the same as batting .100… Ichiro would bat 1.000

Really? That’s like me saying, “I know this is going to be thrown into the category of rosterbation, but…” I know it’s going to be deleted, so why waste my time and the editors time?

Moreover, Mike posted asking about the Real Jose Lopez on the 29th and hit a game-tying home run on the 30th. Dave posted Let The Sell Off Begin on the 27th and they won 3 of 4 since. It seems like they’ve been bunting less since DMZ evaluated Wak’s use of the bunt (sans that second inning bunt the other night…ugh). Can someone please support/diffuse that perception, or point me in the direction of where to find game-by-game bunt stats so I can do the legwork? I just don’t know where to look…

Anyhow, USSM continues to do what coaching cannot: Alter the course of history!

  22. tmac9311 on June 1st, 2009 3:31 pm

i don’t think Dave should work on a post about anyone, instead he should be working on a 36 million dollar bat that we can trade Silva for.

‘Why Rob Johnson should not be sent to the glue factory post-haste’

  24. Anthony on June 1st, 2009 3:43 pm

Of course, we’re still waiting on the Padres or Twins to make a trade, or the Pirates to make a fake trade, for Yuni.

At the same time, DMZ surpassed even his own powers by sending Silva not to the bullpen, but instead to the DL with an imaginary injury.

  26. joser on June 1st, 2009 4:34 pm

Yes, the injury is very real — and it was inflicted on each and every one of us who had to watch him pitch.

  27. littlelinny6 on June 1st, 2009 4:55 pm

How about “Sign Griffey to a long-term contract” post. Maybe he will continue to go down the tubes, we can release him and Sweeney and bring up Clement and possibly Shelton.

Not a day goes by that Baltimore doesn’t thank Bavasi. Adam Jones…….
