Game 57, Twins at Mariners

Slowey v Bedard.

Burke! Jamie Burke!

Um, also, Cedeno at short, Chavez in left. But Burke’s back! Denny Stark gets the DFA to make room on the roster.

I thought you were joking, naviomelo. I thought the team released Dickey.

  2. naviomelo on June 7th, 2009 3:14 pm

    BURKE!!!

  3. Carson on June 7th, 2009 3:15 pm

    Burke POWER

  4. Lauren, token chick on June 7th, 2009 3:15 pm

    Holy smokes!

  5. juneau_fan on June 7th, 2009 3:15 pm

Well, now fuckedy fuck at all the messing around with bunts and steals. One or two more runs would be nice here.

  6. zvazda on June 7th, 2009 3:15 pm

    Juneau –

Ok, now I know you are a genious in disguise!

  7. Jay R. on June 7th, 2009 3:16 pm

And Burke doubles the OPS from the catcher position this year. Sigh.

  8. Scottdids on June 7th, 2009 3:17 pm

There’s a bit of a cushion! Thank you Jamie Burke! Who is warming up for Bedard?

  9. juneau_fan on June 7th, 2009 3:18 pm

No, I’m not, zvazda, because I didn’t notice that Dickey’s in a Twins uniform! Gotta get those damn glasses.

  10. egreenlaw9 on June 7th, 2009 3:19 pm

Because I’m sure at least one curveball has been thrown in this game, I think this is relevant.

I just read an amazing article I wanted to share with everyone here about why curveballs are so hard to hit, and why they appear to so abruptly change direction even though they break on a continuous path.

Here’s the article and here’s the award winning optical illusion that explains it.

Really, check this out. It’ll blow your mind.

  11. UW10 on June 7th, 2009 3:22 pm

award winning huh? what award? lol…. let me guess, you wrote the article?

  12. egreenlaw9 on June 7th, 2009 3:25 pm

ha! No, not at all 🙂

I do editing for an online news site and I ran across it while browsing for stories.

The award is the Visual Illusion of the Year by the US Vision Sciences Society.

I get nothing from it, other than the satisfaction of knowing why a good curveball looks like it’s bouncing off a plate of glass when you’re trying to hit it. 😉

A home run from the catcher position. 3 from Kenji 1 from Burke. What to those other guys do? Oh, that’s right there great at defense. Right? Oh? So the cannot hit or field. Hmmm! Why are they up here?

  14. juneau_fan on June 7th, 2009 3:29 pm

Batista is such a torment to watch.

  15. zvazda on June 7th, 2009 3:35 pm

I don’t know if Batista actually pitches slowly or if time just seems to stand still when he’s on the mound… but he seems to take forever.

  16. SequimRealEstate on June 7th, 2009 3:37 pm

    Endy! Defense matters.

  17. naviomelo on June 7th, 2009 3:37 pm

First 1-2-3 inning for either team.

  18. Breadbaker on June 7th, 2009 3:58 pm

It’s too bad this is our last game with the Twins this year, because we finally found someone who can get Mauer and Morneau in the late innings. Nice job, Garrett Olson.

  19. Scottdids on June 7th, 2009 4:04 pm

I thought Lowe is closing today? I doooooooooon’t like this if he’s going 2 innings.

  20. juneau_fan on June 7th, 2009 4:07 pm

There’s still Brandon Morrow in the pen, right? *blinking*

  21. Scottdids on June 7th, 2009 4:10 pm

I was thinking White. Thanks for the scare though Juneau!

  22. naviomelo on June 7th, 2009 4:10 pm

    Morrow’s closing according to Niehaus.

  23. juneau_fan on June 7th, 2009 4:11 pm

AAEEIII…*starting running around room like dog when thunder rolls*

  24. zvazda on June 7th, 2009 4:16 pm

Well, he isn’t closing if we score at least two runs, right?

  25. naviomelo on June 7th, 2009 4:22 pm

He’s not up and throwing yet, though. Only White is throwing right now, again according to Niehaus.

  26. Scottdids on June 7th, 2009 4:33 pm

Could this game take any longer?

  27. Lauren, token chick on June 7th, 2009 4:36 pm

Sure, Scott. Morrow could give up two runs. Is that what you want?

  28. Sports on a Schtick on June 7th, 2009 4:36 pm

Swinging on a 3-0 pitch? Oh well.

    Excitement time…

  29. Scottdids on June 7th, 2009 4:37 pm

Well I’m trusting Wakamatsu to keep him away from the Twins. I must have dozed off a half dozen times this game though.

  30. Rick L on June 7th, 2009 4:38 pm

I like Sean White as the choice here.

  31. Breadbaker on June 7th, 2009 4:41 pm

    Nice pitching, Sean White.

  32. DMZ on June 7th, 2009 4:43 pm

I’ve been planning on getting out on the bike today after the game and let me tell you, as someone who is both a fan and has post-game plans, this kind of long, hit/walk/inning affair is just killing me.

  33. Breadbaker on June 7th, 2009 4:45 pm

Wlad sitting on bench thinking “wow, you can catch balls on the warning track? Who knew?”

  34. Sports on a Schtick on June 7th, 2009 4:47 pm

Those were balls??? Damn it, don’t want to see Kubel.

  35. Breadbaker on June 7th, 2009 4:49 pm

    Endy!

  36. Sports on a Schtick on June 7th, 2009 4:49 pm

Huzzah. Disaster averted, Bedard with the shining W.

  37. Scottdids on June 7th, 2009 4:50 pm

Thank you Endy! Finally its over haha… Thats 3 series wins a row I do believe.

  38. DMZ on June 7th, 2009 4:57 pm

Series wins? Is that you, Geoff?

  39. cgmonk on June 7th, 2009 5:02 pm

Free regular roast beef at Arby’s if you bring in today’s today score.

  40. msb on June 7th, 2009 5:16 pm

Nice to hear Dave actually mention that Bucknor had a mystery strike zone today

  41. Breadbaker on June 7th, 2009 5:58 pm

Watching the last few innings on mlb.com, he was as likely to call a strike a ball as a ball a strike. Imagine having someone like that behind the plate the day after an extra inning night game where you depend on your starter to go a long way to give your bullpen some rest. He appeared, at least, to be consistently inconsistent, but when you leave pitchers with no clue where you’re calling things, you’re just going to increase tempers and wear out arms.

  42. msb on June 7th, 2009 7:05 pm

you’re just going to increase tempers and wear out arms.

I kept expecting to see steam out of Bedard’s ears.

  43. Breadbaker on June 7th, 2009 10:47 pm

It was nice to see White get a chance to close, and nice to see that Wakamatsu now has a note that says “Aardsma only available two games in a row.” It was nice that we had three straight games he could pitch in and nice that someone else got to pitch the ninth.
