Game 61, Mariners at Rockies

Mike Snow · June 12, 2009 at 5:53 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Since we’re in interleague play and get to enjoy watching pitchers hit, here’s a thought. Jarrod Washburn has a career OBP of .326 in 50 PA. That’s higher than everyone else in tonight’s lineup except for Ichiro and Branyan.

RF-L Ichiro
1B-L Branyan
3B-R Beltre
2B-R Lopez
CF-L Chavez
LF-R Cedeno
SS-R Betancourt
C-R Johnson
P-L Washburn

In other news, Bedard is a scratch again to-Morrow.

hmmmm Bedard scratched from start tomorrow with shoulder inflammation. Further:

“The second part of the bombshell is that Brandon Morrow will make the start in Bedard’s place. He will be limited to 60 pitches. Wakamatsu messed with Morrow by calling him into his office and saying, “:You ready to start?”

Morrow, thinking he was headed to Tacoma, replied, “Yeah.”

    Wakamatsu said, “Here?”

  2. dingla on June 12th, 2009 5:56 pm

    whats the word on Silva?

  3. NoStars on June 12th, 2009 5:57 pm

Rob Johnson yay haha! Take a seat GQ until you can take a pitch.

  4. Jeff Nye on June 12th, 2009 6:00 pm

If Rob Johnson is in the lineup, it’s us that are being punished, not Quiroz.

  5. hark on June 12th, 2009 6:07 pm

Assuming Borrow isn’t sent down to Tacoma and gets a few more “development” starts here, this means he’ll be starting next Friday assuming they juggle where Bedard slots and Morrow just gets the standard four games off (Sunday-Wednesday, Thursday travel). This means he’ll be starting for his own bobblehead night. PR move?

  6. hark on June 12th, 2009 6:08 pm

Gah, edit: “Assuming Morrow…” I was thinking Brandon and typed the B. Harsh.

  7. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 6:12 pm

Apparently Bedard is only expected to miss one start. In fact, they said he could probably make the start tomorrow and have it be no big deal, but they are being extra cautious.

Apparently Bedard is only expected to miss one start. In fact, they said he could probably make the start tomorrow and have it be no big deal, but they are being extra cautious.

Which would still have Morrow slated for next Friday.

  9. wabbles on June 12th, 2009 6:14 pm

    whats the word on Silva?

Well, it’s my understanding that he can’t pitch all that well but he’s saddled with a long-term multimillion dollar contract.
Oh! You meant his injury. Who knows? The team probably hasn’t told him yet if he’s healed.

  10. joser on June 12th, 2009 6:14 pm

Well, at this point they’re Borrowing him from Tacoma, where he belongs.

Oh, and as if Morrow starting in Coors doesn’t scare you enough, per Drayer the starting left fielder tomorrow will by… Griffey. He’ll also make one start in the field in the SD series. Sweeney is purely a pinch hitter in interleague play, apparently.

Also from Drayer: Gutierrez is available, even as a defensive replacement, but they wanted to give him one more day to rest his knee. Oh, and note Endy is batting 5th. He’s apparently pumped. Let’s see if he can actually hit like a #5 guy.

Drayer in her blog also mentions that Clement is apparently now catching some bullpen sessions, so that’s a hopeful sign.

And Wetteland continues to add to his legend. Singing the Monty Python “Lumberjack” song to the Japanese journalists? This guy needs to be at a USSM event.

  11. Scottdids on June 12th, 2009 6:17 pm

These are possibly the most craptastic 5-9 hitters in MLB history tonight. Yikes!

  12. hark on June 12th, 2009 6:18 pm

    Branyan!

  13. ScottBrowne on June 12th, 2009 6:19 pm

    I love you, Russell.

  14. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 6:19 pm

Am i the only one that is a little frustrated with Wak’s comments alluding to the fact that they might try to build Morrow up as a starter with the Mariners rather than in Tacoma as planned? Is there something wrong with RRS or perhaps is there a trade-a-brewing that we might need to do this?

  15. joser on June 12th, 2009 6:21 pm

I don’t know how the pitching staff feels, but there’s a least one Mariner who already likes Coors Field.

  16. cgmonk on June 12th, 2009 6:26 pm

Google news has several stories on Silva from May 19th/20th. They all say the same thing, MRI revealed shoulder issue, getting a second opinion and then nothing for 3 weeks.

  17. dsmiley on June 12th, 2009 6:28 pm

Morrow — If it turns out that the Ms will build up Morrow in the majors, I will be disappointed. I like Morrow as a starter, but we need to let him build up in the minors. He needs to learn to mix his pitches and make better decisions.

Bedard — Trade him ASAP, before he really gets hurt.

    Silva — Who?

Branyan — He’s quickly becoming one of my favorite Mariners. He hasn’t earned the Ichiro! exclamation point, but he should get something. Maybe a halfsclamation point?

  18. hark on June 12th, 2009 6:30 pm

dsmiley, how ’bout Russel# As in he #’s (pounds) baseballs. Lame…a little…

  19. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 6:31 pm

It’s funny that in today’s 6-9 part of the lineup, Washburn is probably the best hitter all around…

  20. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 6:32 pm

    How about Branyan+

  21. cdowley on June 12th, 2009 6:36 pm

Branyan — He’s quickly becoming one of my favorite Mariners. He hasn’t earned the Ichiro! exclamation point, but he should get something. Maybe a halfsclamation point?

Brock and Salk were calling him Moose earlier, with accompanying moose calls in the background. Salk started laughing so hard I’m pretty sure he wet himself…

I know we have the mascot already, but the nickname is halfway apropo.

  22. pumpkinhead on June 12th, 2009 6:39 pm

Good range from Chavez. Balentien trips on his feet with that one.

  23. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 6:42 pm

    Bunt? Swing away, Washburn!

  24. dsmiley on June 12th, 2009 6:44 pm

He is the rare Mariner left-handed bat.

  25. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 6:44 pm

Hahahaha…now Wash has to run the bases.

Let’s see if scoring looks easier from this side of the ball, buddy.

  26. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 6:47 pm

Russel “the on base machine” Branyan :-)

  27. dsmiley on June 12th, 2009 6:49 pm

    Beltre%

  28. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 6:49 pm

    Beltremendous!

  29. ScottBrowne on June 12th, 2009 6:49 pm

    There we go, Adrian.

  30. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 6:51 pm

    Welcome to NL gamesmanship, Mariners.

  31. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 6:52 pm

Haha, they are afraid of our number 5 hitter :-) I bet Endy hasn’t seen that too many times in his career.

  32. dsmiley on June 12th, 2009 6:55 pm

That was my first thought, too. Then I realized Cedeno was next. Kind of a buzzkill.

  33. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 7:03 pm

2 out base hits with RISP must be nice.

  34. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 7:04 pm

Way to show that sparkling defense you have the well deserved reputation for Robby. *sarcasm*

  35. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 7:04 pm

Time to start singing The Wheels are Coming Off the Bus….

Accompanied by the Rob Johnson Mancrush excuses in two part harmony.

  36. crazyray7391 on June 12th, 2009 7:09 pm

How many times is Blowers going to blame that inning on the fact that Washburn had to run the bases?

  37. Paul B on June 12th, 2009 7:09 pm

The Rockies only have 1 hit so far.

  38. ScottBrowne on June 12th, 2009 7:10 pm

Rob Johnson hit that? What the hell?

  39. Flowin on June 12th, 2009 7:11 pm

Wow… when Yuni and Rob Johnson are hitting here, you know you are at Coors.

  40. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 7:11 pm

Even the Mariners offense looks good in Colorado :-)

  41. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 7:13 pm

God, this team’s horrible baserunners. Only Braynan, like everything else he does, seemed to have a clue when he was caught in the run down and was directing traffic of the other runners.

  42. bilbo27 on June 12th, 2009 7:13 pm

That’s better Rob. For a second there, you were almost looking like you belonged in the major leagues.

  43. Paul B on June 12th, 2009 7:14 pm

For a guy who can’t hit, Johnson does hit a double every so often. He’s got 7 so far this year.

Which is the same number that Yuni has, but Johnson’s had about half the at bats.

  44. ScottBrowne on June 12th, 2009 7:16 pm

Which is the same number that Yuni has, but Johnson’s had about half the at bats.

And both of them are shitty baserunners.

  45. Coolalvin206 on June 12th, 2009 7:17 pm

Does any other team struggle so much on a day to day basis with baserunning as the M’s do?

  46. Flowin on June 12th, 2009 7:19 pm

Well, Washburn can’t complain about the lack of run support in this one..

  47. msb on June 12th, 2009 7:22 pm

Someone was floating the stat that with 4 runs, the Mariners win.

    Maybe not tonight.

  48. JerBear on June 12th, 2009 7:23 pm

And both of them are shitty baserunners.

What? But I’ve been told a hundred times that Rob “Runs well for a catcher!”

  49. hark on June 12th, 2009 7:26 pm

What? But I’ve been told a hundred times that Rob “Runs well for a catcher!”

I think this is a reference to his speed, not his intelligence.

  50. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 7:42 pm

Is it a bad thing that Washburn actually has a pretty confident stance up there? Surely some NL teams wants him!

  51. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 7:54 pm

    Ugh, that’s embarrassing.

  52. ndrfx on June 12th, 2009 7:57 pm

…”you can not have enough runs in this ball park”…yah, the ball park is playing a HUGE FREAKING ROLE. M’s are looking like morons out there.

  53. msb on June 12th, 2009 7:57 pm

Well, this is just going to hell in a hand basket.

  54. JMHawkins on June 12th, 2009 7:58 pm

“Runs well for a catcher” means his knees actually bend and move up and down and everything when he runs.

Washburn is gassed, by the way, in case Wak is reading the game thread…

  55. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 8:06 pm

This our only chance to get some runs, since the bottom half of the order sucks.

  56. Paul B on June 12th, 2009 8:15 pm

Both pitchers are over 100 pitches.

  57. msb on June 12th, 2009 8:21 pm

Rob wants to be the catcher sent back to Tacoma.

  58. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 8:21 pm

Time for the Johnson apologists to start….

“Couldn’t Yuni or Lopez have knocked that down??”

  59. JMHawkins on June 12th, 2009 8:23 pm

Rob Johnson runs well for a catcher. Doesn’t catch well for a catcher though.

  60. UW10 on June 12th, 2009 8:23 pm

what the fuck johnson… why is he even on the roster?

  61. JMHawkins on June 12th, 2009 8:25 pm

Oh, and the Boater Ed radio spots are annoying. Really, really annoying.

  62. vern on June 12th, 2009 8:27 pm

Rob’s moon is in Venus retrograde and that is why he sucks so bad….

  63. hark on June 12th, 2009 8:27 pm

…I don’t drink, and I’m feeling a desperate need for alcohol right now. Who’s in?

  64. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 8:41 pm

Unfortunately, I’ve already lost my buzz, hark. You’re about two rum and coke’s behind.

This loss is on Rob ‘The Tongue’ Johnson?

  65. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 8:43 pm

Is there anyone to pinch run? One of the pitchers? Then again, Griffey’s one of the few players who can properly navigate around the baselines, even if he’s not fast.

  66. kenshabby on June 12th, 2009 8:44 pm

Uh, no Mr. Sims, the crowd is cheering because the Rockies are on the verge of winning their 9th straight, not because Griffey’s batting.

  67. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 8:47 pm

Some great unintentional laughs to wrap up the game!

Giving up four walks is the key to losing the game, thump, under the bus goes Washburn and Batista.

And Brandon Morrow will have to be sure to not do that tomorrow. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAAA…over/under on walks/innings on Morrow? I say 6 walks, three innings.

  68. egreenlaw9 on June 12th, 2009 9:07 pm

juneau_fan — what the hell? piss off

  69. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 9:14 pm

Er? You really expect Morrow to pitch a CG tomorrow? Or even just not get lit up?

I sure as hell hope he makes it through too, but let’s get realistic here.

  70. egreenlaw9 on June 12th, 2009 9:53 pm

Yeah, I totally expect him to pitch a complete game. 9 innings, 6-7 pitches per innings… sounds about right, eh?

Fuck no I don’t expect him to pitch a CG, but I don’t expect him to go three and walk six either.

Your being a pessimistic ass is what bugs me.

That make a bit more sense?

  71. Jeff Nye on June 12th, 2009 10:33 pm

    Cut it out.

  72. juneau_fan on June 12th, 2009 10:33 pm

*yawn* I really would use the word realist, but whatever. He’s shown poor control that certainly doesn’t increase with increased innings.

As for the ass part, I could say the same of you, but that term is probably reserved for anyone who continues to squabble in a slow game thread hours after even the players are in bed.

  73. egreenlaw9 on June 12th, 2009 10:55 pm

Jeff – and that doesn’t warrant a ‘cut it out?’

    *yawn*

  74. egreenlaw9 on June 12th, 2009 10:58 pm

juneau – or in other words… exactly what you just did.

You do know what irony is, right?

    Anyway, point is…

Don’t rip on Morrow till we have a reason. The ‘HAHAHAHAHAHAHA’ thing is just obnoxious.

Give us a reason. Give us a number. Just do more than *laugh*, ok?

  75. Jeff Nye on June 12th, 2009 10:58 pm

Did I single anyone out? No.

    Stop acting like children.

  76. egreenlaw9 on June 12th, 2009 11:08 pm

    Jeff – k. thanks. *bow*

  77. egreenlaw9 on June 12th, 2009 11:09 pm

Time to go meet up with the girls anyway in QA… have a good night y’all

  78. jmb13 on June 12th, 2009 11:31 pm

I love this argument. Then the USSM muscle (Jeff Nye) comes in and revels in it’s own purported dominance. The two best things about the internet can be seen here, childishness and arrogance. (Sarcasm)

Anyway, I don’t feel like reading all the posts that aren’t on the main page, why isn’t Bedard making his start? I’m looking forward to it actually.

Well, someone has to produce some offense around here. If the team can’t do it on the field, I suppose we’ll have to do it in the game thread…
