Carp’s in San Diego with the team
Initially you would think the move was to replace Branyan who’s going to leave for his grandfather’s funeral on Thursday. But Wakamatsu said Branyan would be placed on the bereavement list.
(Update — Baker’s run it too)
There are other possibilities, if he’s activated: Sweeney, for all his good character and supposed clubhouse-osity, has done very little for the team so far this year on the field, and seems the obvious positional drop if they’re making moves.
Dave adds the actual move: Bedard to the DL. I hate to say I told you so, but, this is why they should have traded him two weeks ago.

I think there’s a minor error in Divish’s article, because “But Wakamatsu said Branyan would NOT be placed on the bereavement list.” makes much more sense.
Either that, or a trade is in the works… Anyone missing?
This sure is going to help Bedard’s chances of being a Type A free agent at the end of the year, too.
If it’s retroactive and there’s nothing too serious, he’s back on the 22-23rd or so, hopefully.

I hope Carp comes in and has a 12-for-20 week, with three dingers and a few walks.
I can dream, can’t I?
There’s at least one pretty massive if there.
About Carp: Sweet…
About Bedard: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, off to the ballpark…last night was a great night…hoping for more of the same tonight…
@robbbbbb
I just hope Carp gets to play while he’s up with the club.
I seem to remember Wak giving Tui a “treat” of making the club out of Spring Training that consisted of getting a good grasp of what a major league bench feels like.
If you’re gonna take a look, take a look…
YAY! to Carp being up. Been wanting to see what he can do.
But a major “Oh crap” to Bedard being on the DL. Especially since I heard that there was an NL team that had an offer in on him just a few weeks ago… Ugh…
Just watch. They’ll put Cedeno at 1st or something equally dumb while Carp flicks sunflower seeds on the bench.
It’s a new day, a new way. At least a new manager.

For those that want to go back and read (and cry)…
Well, yeah. It ought to allow the Elias folks to add in two or three hypothetical starts to his stats. Should be good for one or two wins, and 18 IP and 18 or so K’s.
Maybe we can petition Bug Selig (yes, I know his name is not Bug, but I find myself completely incapable of typing B-u-d-space-S-e-l-i-g. It always comes out “Bug”. I figure it’s a sign or something) to let us count those wins for our record.
Regarding the callup from Tacoma, as the Romans used to say, Seize the Carp!
But, but, what are you saying? Besides, Carp bats LH! He can’t replace Sweeney! He can only replace… Junior!
His DL stint is retro to the 7th, so hopefully he’s back by the 23rd.
Hmmm, so if yesterday was Felix Day I guess tomorrow is Carp Diem?
Assuming this isn’t a Tui-style bench tour for him, of course.
Very happy to see Carp come up. Could Saunders be next, please? I think most of us have seen more than enough of Balentien.
Well, since I’m the guy that brought up platoon splits, I looked up the numbers.
Carp, this year:
vs LH .270 / .356 / .353
vs RH .311 / .434 / .595 (!)
Sweeney, this year:
vs LH .212 / .255 / .423
vs RH .268 / .302 / .366
So Carp is a bit better (other than power) against lefties, and he’s way better against RHP. Right hand pitchers which the M’s face three or four times more often than left handers, conveniently.
Granted, Sweeney’s is a much smaller sample (93 ABs vs 211 for Carp) and neither are large enough to be definitive. But I think we know what we’re seeing. Carp’s numbers have a good chance of getting better. Whereas Sweeney….
Carp played a little in left field so when Branyan is back run Carp out there and bring Chavez in late for defense BUT play the guy do not Tui him. Could this be the start of a new word. Tui – Individual on major league team who doesnt play but fills a roster spot.

‘deserve to’ fits in between doesn’t and play, I think.
We should be so lucky. At least Sweeney hasn’t been hurting us because he hasn’t been playing.
I think it is pretty obvious why Mike Carp is up. Mariners bench coach Ty Van Burleo used to play first base for Hiroshima Toyo Carp. Connect the dots people!
Also, Iron Chef Chen Kenichi bested Kaoru Miyazawa in Battle Carp.
