Condolences to the Lopez family
As Geoff Baker reports, Jose Lopez was not able to reach Venezuela before his sister died. Unlike with his brother’s tragic motorcycle accident, he was at least able to attend her funeral. To lose two siblings, both so early in life, must be incredibly heartbreaking for the entire family. And in the case of Lopez, who should return in the next day or two, the kind of travel challenges these situations present highlight just how far away Latin American players are from the support network most of us take for granted, and why the cultural hurdles they deal with should not be discounted.

Sad indeed. I cannot imagine losing two siblings, let alone two in that span. I’m not aware of their age, but they must be somewhat close to that of Lopez, making this an even harder loss.
My thoughts are with Jose. What a tough couple of years he’s had. I could care less about how he plays the rest of the year – let’s just hope he comes through this ok.
Amen.
I always root extra hard for Jose Lopez, and I’m happy when he succeeds. Perhaps its me rooting for the pudgy dude, like me. But after his brother passing away and now his sister, I really, really wish him the best, regardless who he plays for or how he plays.
Its obvious he is well-liked by his teammates, and he is always smiling, and that counts for something in my book.
I feel just horrible for Jose and his family. It would be nice if the M’s could set up some kind of sympathy card that fans could sign online, and that could be printed out (huge print job, yes). Anything to show him that our thoughts are with him.
It took me a while to find an e-mail address for the Mariners PR people but I e-mailed that suggestion of kenshabby’s (along with mine that they set up a huge sheet of butcher paper for everyone to sign) to the Mariners. Hopefully they’ll do something along those lines.
